Spencer: The failure of moderate Muslims

My column in FrontPage this morning:

A Muslim chaplain at New York University, Khalid Latif, noting a recent debate at the university on the question of whether or not "Islam Is a Religion of Peace," published a piece for CNN Monday saying that the answer is that "Islam is a religion of peace, or it isn't." Latif explains that "there is no one answer," for "the Muslim community is by no means monolithic and viewing us as one is problematic. We are diverse." Yet his own stance toward Islamic jihadists reveals the abject failure of self-proclaimed moderate Muslims in general to deal adequately with the global crisis within the Islamic world.

Latif complains that Muslims "find ourselves in a moment in which we are very narrowly understood. That normative understanding is equated to something radical, despite the fact that 93 percent of Muslims are found to be far from radical according to recent Gallup surveys." Compounding this difficulty, he says, is that "typically when one of us from that 93 percent steps up to speak, we are vehemently told that we either do not represent Islam or even more absurdly that we are not truly practicing Islam's teachings."

This even happened during the NYU debate - or so Latif claimed. When a peaceful Muslim, Zeba Khan, spoke up, Latif said, her "voice, her interpretation, and all of her efforts were collectively dismissed since she did not fit into what Hirsi Ali believed Islam to be." Ex-Muslim Ayaan Hirsi Ali was on the panel arguing against the idea that Islam was a religion of peace.

Latif claimed of the Muslim who was arguing that Islam was peaceful, Maajid Nawaz, that "those opposed to the motion told him that it is his peaceful understanding of Islam that is rooted in misinterpretation, since it does not match up with the interpretation put forth by the radical minority, and thus somehow ignores the fundamentals of Islam since those groups somehow are the end-all be-all of what Islam actually means."

Above all, Latif asserted that "characteristic of any text - whether religious or not - is its ability to be interpreted through the lens of its reader. Interpretations of the Quran that espouse ideas of tolerance, compassion and mercy have existed and continue to exist in the majority of Muslim communities since the advent of Islam 1400 years ago." And therefore, "as much as Muslims need to acknowledge the existence of a minority voice that is radicalized, so too does a broader society need to acknowledge the existence of a majority voice that is not radicalized and more importantly condemns radical thought. There are those who make Islam to be something restrictive and radical, but there are many, many more who do not."

That's just great, and I am happy to acknowledge that Khalid Latif is not interested in Islam as "restrictive" and "radical." It is also worth noting, however, that a few years ago, when NYU students planned to display the Danish cartoons of Muhammad at a campus event, Latif wrote a letter to NYU President John Sexton, asking that he "not allow these cartoons to be displayed in any shape or form." Why not? Because "the potential of what might happen after they are shown is something else that should be considered and not taken lightly." For "the repercussions that would take place outside of the university setting are potentially huge. All over the world Muslims have been coming together over this issue and in New York they would not hesitate in doing the same thing."...

There is more.

"despite the fact that 93 percent of Muslims are found to be far from radical according to recent Gallup surveys"

How did Latif determine that the Muslim respondents aren't making self-serving responses to the survey?

"despite the fact that 93 percent of Muslims are found to be far from radical according to recent Gallup surveys"

This means that there are around 105 million radical muslims worldwide.

Is that supposed to be reassuring?

Just let Muslims know that an older religion like they're describing ALREADY EXISTS

That's a waste of time. Since a Muslim "knows" that Islam came before Judaism and "knows" that Judaism is corrupt, there is no logic you can give that would lead one to convert.

Islam, 'hijacked' by a tiny minority of extremists, genocidal murderous Jihadis, for 1400 years, from Spain to Indonesia... [spit]

A debate concerning the same subject between apologist Tariq Ramadan and defender of freedom Christopher Hitchens. Needless to say, Tariq is elegantly refuted:

Prof Ramadan, monsieur two tongues, the smooth operator, a mountain of sugar so high I find it difficult to believe anyone in the Western world has any confidence in him whatsoever.

you have a great point here!

Khalid Latif is describing himself as a post-modern muslim. That's nice, but puts him in a perhaps one in a million liberally educated subgroup (or else he's just using the talk to deceive). Robert's article ends:

his unwillingness or inability to stand up tothe “radicals” either casts doubt upon his sincerity or demonstrates his impotence — and the failure of moderate Muslims in general to do anything effective to counter those “radicals.”
My experience of post-modern Christians is that they are similarly ineffectiveat persuading other Christians.

The Gallup survey sounds like this AFP article 27.2.2008. The second sentence "The survey... seeks to dispel the belief held by some in the West that Islam itself is the driving force of radicalism" is a bad sign showing partiality in the journalist or report writers. It was done and written up by Dalia Mogahed who "is herself an Islamic ideologue who supports Islamic Sharia". Her co-author is Saudi-funded Islamic apologist and friend of jihadists John Esposito. The method included interviews controlled and interpreted by Mogahed. She has a strong motive and strong influence over the result, and the headline figure (93% non-radical) is clearly distorted. It doesn't count as an impartial result. Robert has an article on it here a useful sentence from the weekly standard article he links is "Mogahed publicly admitted they knew certain people weren't moderates but they still termed them so"

The key result: "only seven percent of the billion Muslims surveyed -- the radicals -- condoned the attacks on the United States in 2001"
A few things than don't make a muslim "radical" for this survey/ propaganda:
- If you say the attacks were "justified" not "completely justified"
- If you just want to kill U.S., Australian, or U.K. soldiers in their home bases
- If you are happy to murder U.S. civilians since the invasion of Iraq, but weren't happy to kill U.S. civilians before then,
- If you behead doctors for treating poor people in an area the Taliban want to control
- If you behead doctors for being Christian or western while treating poor people
- If you take civilian hostages to attempt to free murderers

Axel, yes there are at least 100 million muslims worldwide who "condoned" the attacks on the United States in 2001. 23% of muslims felt the attacks were somewhat justified or more but didn't "condone" (e.g we were justfied but it was not the right tactic or the right time). That's a total of 450 million muslims sympathising with the attack.

There is an overlapping set of muslims who you or I would call radical (eg approving murder for criticising islam or for a non-muslim damaging a koran) independent of their attitudes to suicide attacks or 9/11, but for Mogahed and Esposito they are "normal", "moderate" muslims.

I just noticed "93 percent of Muslims are found to be far from radical according to recent Gallup surveys" has two distortions by Latif:
- The 93 percent included 6.5% who approved the 9/11 attacks (either not far from radical, or non-radical is still scarily dangerous) and
- the surveys were in 2002-2006 which isn't terrible recent either - some predate the invasion of Iraq!

A Muslim becoming a Jew has never happened in the history of humanity.

That wasn't my point. My point was that logic cannot convert a Muslim; telling him that his religion lies to him only results in retrenchment.

CAIR loves to claim that it's unfair to blame a group of people for the actions of a few.
Agree....so why must 5'500'000'000 non-muslims live with the fear of being murdered by a handfull of people acting on the instruction of one man that claimed to have been given special order from God to mete out death for earthly sins.
One person heard voices in his head 1400 year ago, and now 5.5 billion are guilty before any trial to prove it and yet CAIR plays the victim as if a few Christian have orders to slaughter all the unbelievers on Earth including Muslims.
Takes a special nerve to endorse the killing of gays in public while acting like the poor victim of being judge from the blood stains on their body as they did nothing to stop the killing but must now be forces to bath because of the filthy homosexual that started it.

Part of the cultural jihad of the liberal/progressive elitist rhetoric is that "enlightened" Muslims simply reject the abrogated suras (i.e., violent, Muslim/Islam supremacist suras) of the Quran and the corresponding sayings and actions of Muhammad in the Haddith/Sunnah. This rhetoric claims that the "majority" of Muslims are so "enlightened" and that they are the "Muslim world" that Obama is reaching out to and protecting. One of the many flaws in this "reasoning" is that Muslims do not look to the U.S. government to interpret the Quran. Muhammad interpreted the Quran by his sayings and actions as recorded in the Haddith/Sunnah. Another flaw is that U.S. interest and wishful thinking does not really speak for the "majority" of the world's Muslim's intentions. That is pure fantasy. Yet another flaw is that passive does not mean peaceful. Submission to Sharia is passive, but it is not necessarily peaceful. Yet under Islam, peace is defined as the world being subjected to Sharia law. Sharia law requires all Muslims to support "lawful" (under Sharia law - sanctioned by an Imam) jihad, whether violently, passively, or financially. And, even if it were true that not all Muslims are violent, they do embrace the Allah of the Quran and Muhammad, messenger of the Quran. The Nazi party was also a supremacists ideology. During World War II, were all professed Nazi's violent and/or culpable, or just the ones who actually carried out the aims and goals of the Nazi ideology?
