They never mention, of course, how Muhammad's favorite wife, Aisha, recounted the time when Muhammad "struck me on the chest which caused me pain." And with Muhammad being the supreme example of conduct for Muslims (cf. Qur'an 33:21), that doesn't bode well for Muslim women.

More seriously, Islam is disgraceful in so many ways that one can lose count of all the ways it is, but an extra disgraceful aspect of Islam is that it essentially produces bully boys aplenty who beat up women. Another sterling legacy to be sure from the religion of peace and tolerance.

@eliasX: Canada and the UK already allow Muslim men to apply for social benefits for their multiple wives, even though polygamy is illegal in those countries. And don't think polygamy isn't happening in the US. I have been in Dearborn, Michigan multiple times and have observed Muslim men walking down the street with three or four wives in tow. They marry them elsewhere, where it is allowed, then bring them here.

Perhaps other JW readers are getting the same disquieting feeling, but it strikes me that the Catholic Church, worldwide, has begun acting as dhimmis. We know that the Church of England (Rowan Williams, Arch. of Canterbury, et alia) is now a lost cause, but must the RC church follow suit, and so quickly. True, there are individual bishops of excellent Christian character, but they are not the holders of the church's temporal policy-setting power.
Nature, whether as science, as politics or as morality, will not tolerate a vacuum. A diminished Christian faith WILL BE supplanted by Muslims. Is this not what has occurred in Europe these last 40-50 years!

I'm in the U.S. so I don't know enough about marriage laws in Canada and UK. Have they always allowed polygamy and bigamy, or is it only recently? I don't think US citizens will allow legal bigamy and polygamy, assuming they are being informed of the issue. Some legal arrangements undertaken in a foreign country should be honored and given legal status in U.S., but NOT bigamy & polygamy. They should have to choose one wife as legal wife and the others would have no legal standing here whatsoever. They can keep their extra ex-wives as girlfriends if they want. I know the American people will see it that way, once they know about it.

A man who has several wives is denying potential mates for one or two other men who should have a wife. The polygamist thinks of himself as the big superior alpha-male and wants to be seen that way and the hell with other men. He's having sex with another man's potential wife, and proudly so. A solution is for the men being so deprived and violated confer together and then jump on the arrogant punk and beat him until he dies. And I'm saying this applies to the Mormons also, as well as the Muslims. The problem is the institutionalizing and establishing of the privilege of this alpha-male behavior, legitimizing and sanctioning it with religious or secular law. Of course there always will be such individuals conducting themselves as keepers of a harem, but that's not a problem. It's the sanctioning and official social approval which makes it evil. And, yes, as such it's evil.

Great essay, dda. Thanks for the link. Particularly interesting are Spengler's noting the difference between Jewish law and Islamic law and the fact that the police power in the Islamic world is shared by both state and the paterfamilias (in this respect Sharia is similar to ancient Roman law).
Of course, there is an inherent weakness in the Western approach which confines the police power to the state alone and that is that the body politic must be ever vigilant that the state not be given any more police power than necessary. Otherwise, tyranny lurks around the bend. Here again I count myself as a Jeffersonian, to wit, that government is best which ordinarily govern least.

Quran 4:34 starts by saying men are the protectors of women because God has made one to excel the other, therefore women must show obediance. Isn't this clearly misogynistic? You don't need to get to the beating part. It then continues to say that when you see ill-conduct on the part of your wife, as if it's up to a man to determine ill-conduct in his wife. Where is the surat about what a woman should do in the case of her husband's ill conduct? Admonish her... God tells a man that it's his place to chastise and punish his wife... You don't even need to get to the beating part to be outraged by this verse.
