The Byzantine icon above is the work of the 16th-century iconographer Theophanes the Cretan. Many Muslims around the world today would consider it offensive and insulting to Islam. Muslims in the Balkans just a few years ago have entered churches and destroyed icons like this one for precisely that reason.
How does this icon insult Islam? In many ways, including these:
1. It depicts human beings, which violates the traditional Islamic prohibition of images and would be considered idolatrous and blasphemous on its face.
2. It depicts Jesus not as a Muslim prophet, as this does:
Instead, it depicts Jesus in the traditional Christian manner, as the incarnate Son of God: his halo reads ο ων, the One Who Is, a title of divinity derived from the name of God that God gives to Moses in Exodus 3:14), in violation of the oft-repeated Qur'anic injunction that Allah has no Son (4:171; 9:30; 25:2; 39:4; 72:3; etc. etc.).
3. In line with #2, it depicts what Muslims would consider to be idolatry, as the holy child's mother kneels and adores him.
4. In the beam or spear coming from heaven down to the child in the cradle, it depicts the activity of the Divine in the world, assuming the doctrine of the Trinity, which is rejected somewhat imprecisely in Qur'an 4:171 and 5:116.
5. The cradle resembles a casket, foreshadowing the core and heart of Christianity, the redemptive death of Christ, which is denied in Qur'an 4:157.
Now, whether you are a Christian or not, and whether or not you believe all or any of these things, the question that is before us with particular urgency this Christmas is whether or not people should be allowed to believe these things freely, without being brutalized or discriminated against, if they live in, say, Iraq, or Egypt, or Pakistan, or Gaza, or Indonesia, and whether free people of all creeds and perspectives should defend their right to do so.
In those countries, as well as in the Philippines and Nigeria where jihad attacks just took place today, Christians are being kidnapped, imprisoned, wrongly arrested, beaten, and murdered not because of anything they have done, but because they have dared to believe some of the things I have adumbrated above -- beliefs that are considered blasphemous in authoritative Islam. And it is hardly better elsewhere in the Islamic world: nowhere in majority-Muslim countries today do people who believe these things enjoy full equality of rights with Muslims.
We see this at Jihad Watch every day. We see jihadists attacking Christians with increasing fury. We also see the world largely yawning and indifferent as all this goes on. Christianity is a large and multifaceted thing, with so many different and various manifestations, but in the mind of the opinion makers of the West it is Western, white, suburban, wealthy, comfortable, oppressive, and oppressing. Christians are, in the little dramas that play out in mainstream media stories every day, a bit cracked, a bit sinister, a bit dangerous, a bit grasping, and sometimes fanatically jingoistic and xenophobic. They are never victims. Muslims, by contrast, are in the daily mainstream media playlets always cast as non-Western, nonwhite, poor, wise, serene, and oppressed. (The Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and Daisy Khan have recently been featured repeatedly in these roles.)
And so when it comes to the specter of non-Western, nonwhite Christians being persecuted by Muslims, the mainstream media's circuitry explodes. They can't handle it. They have no paradigm for doing so. It violates every rule in their playbook. So they either ignore it or mask the identity and/or motives of the perpetrators, and try to cast the focus elsewhere.
And so remember this Christmas: those Christians who are being persecuted in Iraq, and the Philippines, and Nigeria, and Egypt, and Pakistan, and elsewhere in the Islamic world, are standing in your place. The jihadis would just as soon attack you as well, and will eventually if they get the chance. Remember that the Islamic supremacist program has you on its list. You may not be a Christian. You may not be a Jew. You may not be a Hindu. You may not wish to pay attention to the jihad at all. But the jihad is universal, and relentless. And you are on its list.
So this Christmas, may all of us whose conversion, subjugation, or death is envisioned by the adherents of Sharia stand together. Let us stand together as Jews, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, atheists, secularists, what have you, and stand up against those who would kill us or subject us to institutionalized discrimination because they find our beliefs offensive.
For be assured: if we do not stand together, they will prevail. And if they prevail, then all the richest manifestations of the unfettered human spirit, from Theophanes the Cretan above to the fashioners of the Buddhas of Bamiyan, from the Hagia Sophia to the temple of Keshava Rai at Mathura, from the works of Socrates and Aristotle to those of Moses Maimonides and Dante Alighieri and Winston Churchill and Oriana Fallaci, will be trampled into the mud, destroyed, exploded, ruined, effaced. We will all be the poorer. Our children will be the poorer.
It is time to fight for our life.

Jonathan, yes, we live in dark times. But as a Christian who does not make a to-do about Christmas (it is not enjoined in Scripture, but I can understand those brethren who'd like a convenient time to remember God's becoming man), I'd like to remind you of something:
The light shineth in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not (John 1:5).
Jesus genealogy: Our Lord identified with a human history full of fallen women, a man who prostituted his own wife, adulterers, kings who led their people to destruction, and sinners of all sorts (Matthew 1:1-21).
Yet, somehow, the Lord of glory is not ashamed to call us--petty, scheming, idolatrous, violent, foul-tempered, covetous, etc. though we be--brethren (Hebrews 2).
My prayer this Christmas, for all who name Christ as Savior, is that we will remember how Jesus identified with sinners in order to save them, and walk in gratitude and humility for this great grace.
Yes, we live in a very evil world, and Islam is a very great manifestation of the deep, dark evil in the human heart (it is all the worse since it masquerades as piety). But I think one thing that Mr. Spencer is trying to get across is that God has given us a very great salvation and hope.
A heartfelt Merry Christmas to all our extended family here at JW, with Robert at the head of the metaphorical table of course, but with love and appreciation to all, including Wellington, Gravenimage, Doubledoresarmy, Marisol, and the many others who care enough to keep this issue alive on these pages and in daily conversations with family and friends. Here is an interesting example of a singer who sings in two languages, one after the other. He sings the first part in the original French (not his native language), then switches to his native German. His voice in the first part is good, and the words are clear. But listen to what happens when he changes language. Suddenly the tone is more plangent, more resonant, the words more heartfelt, the high notes thrilling.
Is this because he is more at ease in his native tongue, or because he wanted to build up in power as he progressed? (Or did the engineer turn up the volume on the second part?)

i have posted my views repeatedly on steps i think a NEW LEADERSHIP should take against this clear and present danger. in a nutshell it would entail first and foremost identifying the enemy (islam) and steps required to eradicate this menace...
however, as you have pointed out, when we are talking about the 'common citizen'... we need some guidance...
common citizen cannot deport those that wish to destroy us from within.... so....what's next?

A wave of Christianophobia is sweeping the world
This Christmas season, Christians are under assault around the world.
Certainly a focus of the problem is the Middle East, where Islamic extremists consider anyone who holds another faith to be a heretic, often subject to execution. But it’s surprising to learn that Christian groups report heinous persecution on almost every continent. And for them, the nation considered the worst place to live is North Korea.
There, believers must worship in secret, and if caught they are imprisoned, tortured and sometimes killed.
North Korea may be the most brutal of the non-Muslim states, but it is far from alone at this. Bhutan forbids the building of churches. In Uzbekistan, Christians are hated, and authorities cut off their water and electricity trying to drive them away. In Azerbaijan, even after churches register with the government, police shut some of them down. In Belarus, the government forces churches to register, and that takes several years. In China, “unregistered” Christians are beaten and imprisoned.
In a report to the European Parliament last month, the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life said that while Muslims and Jews face significant persecution, “Christians faced some sort of harassment in two-thirds of all countries,” or 133 states.
Why? The faith preaches tolerance and eschews violence, though of course not every Christian lives up to its tenets. But Christianity is the world’s largest religion. Almost one-third of the world’s people identify themselves as Christian. Still, in many places the religion labors under the perception that it is a vehicle of Western imperialism, and its adherents are the wealthy oligarchy of Europe and the United States. It doesn’t help that Christians aggressively proselytize.
However, the truth is that almost 400 million Christians live in Africa, 511 million in Latin America and about 200 million in Asia. Those people certainly aren’t Western imperialists. That’s half the religion’s population, and among them are the world’s poorest people.
While persecution persists around the world, the most brutal examples come from the Islamic world, of course....

I wish a merry and blessed Christmas to all christian JW readers. We can thank God that the majority of us still can enjoy a peaceful and non-violent Christmas within our families. But for how long? Just look what happened today to Christians all over the muslim world, in that sense we are truly privileged, in being able to freely practice our religion. Still, if we don't resist jihad, if we don't resist islam, it's only a matter of time until we will experience the same fate... Never surrender, never submit.

Russia has for centuries kept Islam at bay. Until we get ruthless in all spheres, we will lose against them. This will not happen until the butcher's bill is big enough. After reading extensively in Bat Y'Oer and Andrew Bostom, what other conclusion can one draw? I think we took the wrong side in Bosnia. I can understand the Serbs and Russians now after reading these two authors. We in America just do not have any experience with Islam, but given who is governing us, we will.

I have had a lovely quiet family Christmas, despite having caught a very bad cold! (You are lucky that you are all far, far away from my sneezes!).
I went to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve - with summer Wet Season rain pouring and pouring down outside - and even though surrounded by lights, music and song I remembered in prayer all my brother and sister Christians trapped inside dar al Islam who would be celebrating in secret, or else in fear of being mass-murderously attacked (and, indeed, in the Philippines and in Nigeria, Christmas eve services were bombed by Jihadists). In that connection: there are people who have posted here, from time to time, who have identified themselves as Armenians, as Copts, as Christians from Lebanon, as non-Muslims from Malaysia, as Christians from Indonesia ('Jasmine', do you still lurk here?). A very special greeting and blessing to all such posters and lurkers; your contribution, your testimony from bleak and bitter experience, is greatly valued.
I count all the regulars here - except the Mohammedtrolls and their deluded janissaries and apologists - as friends and colleagues in this slow, frustrating but vitally important joint task of educating ordinary people all across the Anglophone world and beyond it, teaching them to recognise what Mr Hugh Fitzgerald (who may be met with, still, at the New English Review blog), likes to call "the meaning and menace of Islam".

I had to share this. You all should have been at the Midnight Mass I attended last night. This was at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, Ill. with Bp. Thomas John Paprocki presiding.
The Bishop began his homily with the story of how John Sobieski stopped the Turks at Vienna in 1683, and how he was hailed as the "savior of Europe." (There happens to be a depiction of that event in the Cathedral's stained glass windows.)
Then the Bishop went on to talk about how the threat of militant Islam didn't end in 1683, it is still very much alive today, particularly for Christians in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East; how much they suffer at the hands of militant Islamists (he included an account of the massacre at Our Lady of Salvation Cathedral); how they cannot celebrate Christmas as we do, and how we must be strong in the practice of our faith and not take it for granted. "I know this wasn't the warm and fuzzy Christmas homily you were expecting," he added, but we shouldn't forget these suffering brothers and sisters of ours even at a time of joy.
Robert, if you had been there, you probably would have stood up and applauded. No political correctness here! I was kind of shocked myself -- but in a good way -- here's someone who isn't afraid to tell it like it is.

Father Zakarias' Life TV, which beams a challenging no-punches-pulled critique of Islam and Mohammed right into the living rooms of millions of Muslims (who surreptitiously watch him in a mixture of rage and fascination) could always use more funds, I'm sure.
If you're an atheist or agnostic, pop a little Christmas gift into Ibn Warraq's or Ali Sina's tip jar.

Yes, Representative-elect Allen West is excellent (although I disagree with, and disapprove of, the use of violent (military) means that are part of the approach that Allen West advocates (and that are part of the approach that I think that most people who are aware of the situation advocate); skillful non-violent action (skillful communication to the world about the situation, and other skillful communication, and other skillful non-violent action) will be effective).
Representative-elect Allen West rightly understands the situation.

Daniel, There is no "dhimmitude" demanded by Christians. You may wish Christians—and the many, many people who celebrate the day as a secular holiday—a "Merry Christmas" if you wish, or you could say "Happy Holidays", or you could say "have a nice day", or you can say nothing at all.
Christmas is, indeed, a rather ubiquitous holiday in the United States—but there is absolutely no compulsion to wish anyone a "Merry Christmas". I'm sorry you felt that there was.
