Turkey pursuing neo-Ottoman dreams, is no longer a reliable U.S. ally

It is refreshing to see even a partial acknowledgment of the true nature of the jihad flotilla in the WaPo. "How WikiLeaks cables capture 21st-century Turkey," by Jackson Diehl for the Washington Post, December 5:

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu smiled cheerfully as he reiterated: Yes, the clash between Israeli commandos and Turkish Islamic activists off the coast of the Gaza Strip in May can be fairly compared with al-Qaeda's attacks on New York and Washington.

"It was the Turkish 9/11 - I repeat it!" he exclaimed during a visit to Washington last week. "I don't mean the numbers," he added when it was pointed out that 2,900 people died on Sept. 11 and nine in the flotilla fight. "I am trying to express the psychological shock in Turkey. Our citizens were killed by a foreign army."

Actually, it wasn't quite that simple. The Turks were not innocent civilians but militants who sought a confrontation; they were killed not by suicidal terrorists but by professional soldiers whose first weapons were mace and paintballs. [...]

Turkey is a member of NATO, a host of U.S. military bases vital to operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and a major purchaser of American weapons. But is it still really an ally? As some of the more interesting of the WikiLeaked State Department documents show, that is a question that two consecutive U.S. administrations have struggled with. During eight years of rule by the mildly Islamist Justice and Development Party, Turkey has become something of a model of the tricky 21st-century relationships the United States will have to manage.

Turkey used to be an authoritarian state that reliably lined up with the West. Now it is a democracy with a booming economy - and big geopolitical ambitions. The power of popular support has given Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan the confidence to undercut U.S. policy in Iran, cultivate anti-American Muslim dictators in Sudan and Syria, and make Israel a near-enemy - all while deploying Turkish troops in Kabul and counting on the United States to help his army fight Kurdish insurgents. [...]

Davutoglu is something of an antihero of the WikiLeaks cables, described as "exceptionally dangerous" and "lost in neo-Ottoman Islamist fantasies." Having arrived in Washington a few hours after those descriptions were released, he accepted an apology from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, played down the damage - and embraced at least part of the embassy's analysis. "Britain has a commonwealth" with its former colonies, he reminded me. Why shouldn't Turkey rebuild its leadership in former Ottoman lands in the Balkans, Middle East and Central Asia?...

Because much blood was shed to keep you from the Balkans, Middle East, and Central Asia, you maurauding Mongol.

The Turkish Military, long the counterweight to Islamists in government (like Erdogan), is swinging into alignment with the Islamists and away from the secular watchdog status that Ataturk assigned it. That can only bode ill for the Balkans states.

["he accepted an apology from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton"]

How gracious of his risible excrement.

This groveling reflex is worse than obsequiousness.

Did Cankles just submit to Ottoman-supremacism?

Any day now the would be Ayatollah of Turkey, Muhammed Fethullah Gülen, will leave his self-imposed exile on the sprawling Pennsylvania estate and he and the 100 bodyguards will return to Turkey. The need to hide behind American rule of law is almost over. The recent Turkish blockbuster FIVE MINARETS IN NEW YORK is slick and expensive and ridiculous propaganda movie about a thinly disguised version of Muhammed Fethullah Gülen, battling American agents, demanding "respect" for Islam and coming across as a muslim superhero.

The importance of this article and the points it makes are difficult to overstate. In fact, it is hard enough to find words to express the importance directly:

For throughout the Arab world, Islamic leaders are looking to Turkey for leadership. And the Turks seem keen to pick up the mantle.

"Why shouldn't Turkey rebuild its leadership in former Ottoman lands in the Balkans, Middle East and Central Asia?..."

Well for one thing, Turkey never had leadership; it had conquest. In the Balkans, I can't imagine that Romania, Hungary, Serbia, or Greece would like to see that "rebuilt". In the Middle East the Arabs and the Egyptians both revolted against Ottoman rule, the Arabs with British help. The Egyptians have their own ideas about being leaders of Islam. And I doubt that the Arab countries would like to see Turkey grabbing the lion's share of their oil revenues. In particular, would the Saudis give back control of Mecca and Medina to Turkey, which held them before WW1? As for Central Asia, the Ottomans never ruled an inch of it; the Ottoman Empire stopped at the Persian (Iranian) border.

The Turks destroyed Byzantium. They sought the conquest of Europe, and to stable their horses in the Vatican. They enslaved more than one million teenage Balkan boys, forcibly converted them to Islam and used them as Janissary shock troops or for their sexual perversions.

The Turks are not European, as their identification with Turkic peoples of Central Asia, including the Uighuirs of China, underscores.

If European conservatives are seriously against Turkish accession to the E.U., then they should finally put an end to its application, and toss it out of the Council of Europe, where it doesn't belong.

Turkish reliability as a NATO ally ended with the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Stop dreaming. The Turks are yet another threat to the West.

You can't take the Turk out of the Anatolian, nor, it appears, the Muslim.

Again, short-sighted policies in the West helped to bring this about. The Turkish army was weakened to please the EU, and so the main force promoting a secular Turkey was undermined. Turkey is not yet nearly as far gone as Iran, though.

The Turkish move to Islamism has been brought about because of our awful policies which have served to build up Iran which has become an example of how to be a bad player and get away with it. Now others want to get in on the act.

Turkey at this point is not to be trusted. But there is still a sliver of hope they will drop their Islamic daydream.

I was thinking that the fault lay with Islam, but I'm just a silly infidel.

"It was the Turkish 9/11 - I repeat it!"
............................

Yes, because the civilian employees at Morgan Stanley and Windows on the World were armed with knives and iron bars, and were coming for the Muslim...

You know, that makes so little sense it is impossible to even parody.

Grotesque verbiage—did anyone in Washington call Davutoglu on this?

More from Davutoglu:

Why shouldn't Turkey rebuild its leadership in former Ottoman lands in the Balkans, Middle East and Central Asia?...
............................

These are sovereign nations, many of which are not Muslim countries, and which sweated blood freeing themselves from the harsh yoke of the Ottoman Empire.

Read about the struggle of Greece to be free of the tyranny of the Muslims.

Does Davutoglu want to reimpose the Devsirme system, with its raids on Christians and using their children as savage Janissary soldiers to oppress their own communities?

What a nightmare. Does Bulgaria, or Romania, or poor, long-suffering Armenia want such a thing? Oh, by the way, they'd have control of the Levant itself under such a system, as well.

I wonder how *Israel* would fare under its tender mercies?

That Turkey remains in NATO is not only irresponsible, but perhaps deadly dangerous to the democratic West in future?! Who knows what NATO secrets have already been taken by secret Islamic supporters in the Turkish Military (remember the Major at Ft. Hood). I must assume some of our brighter people in NATO have already figured this out and have been taking steps accordingly?! And lets hope our political leaders have the guts not to dismiss this clear and very possible threat. Turkey is becoming more radical by the month.

We count on them we count ourselves out.
We are non-believers - are we forgetting?
