Pakistan: Lawyers shower assassin of governor opposed to blasphemy law with rose petals

And another group of clerics warned no one should pray or "express regret" for the loss of Salman Taseer, who died essentially for committing "blasphemy" against the blasphemy law. They said, "the supporter is as equally guilty as one who committed blasphemy."

In barely two days, the wide reporting of this single case may have done more than any before it to rip the fig leaf of "moderation" off of Pakistan, and to show what a uselessly relative label "moderate" ultimately is.

As one Pakistani radio host said, "Extremist thought has become so mainstream that what we need to question in Pakistan is what people think constitutes extremism now." "Cheers and tears in Pakistan after assassination," by Sebastian Abbott for the Associated Press, January 5:

ISLAMABAD - Lawyers showered the suspected assassin of a liberal Pakistani governor with rose petals as he entered court. Some 170 miles away, the prime minister joined thousands to mourn the loss of the politician, who dared to challenge the demands of Islamic extremists.
The cheers and tears across the country Wednesday underscored Pakistan's journey over the past several decades from a nation defined by moderate Islam to one increasingly influenced by fundamentalists willing to use violence to impose their views.
Even so-called moderate Muslim scholars praised 26-year-old Mumtaz Qadri for allegedly killing Punjab province Gov. Salman Taseer on Tuesday in a hail of gunfire while he was supposed to be protecting him as a bodyguard. Qadri later told authorities he acted because of Taseer's vocal opposition to blasphemy laws that order death for those who insult Islam.
As Qadri was escorted into court in Islamabad, a rowdy crowd patted his back and kissed his cheek as lawyers at the scene threw flowers. On the way out, some 200 sympathizers chanted slogans in his favor, and the suspect stood at the back door of an armored police van and repeatedly yelled "God is great."
Many other Pakistanis were appalled.
"Extremist thought has become so mainstream that what we need to question in Pakistan is what people think constitutes extremism now," said Fasi Zaka, a 34-year-old radio host and columnist.

Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart, and you'll be disappointed slightly farther down the road:

Analysts say a majority of Pakistan's Muslims still follow a moderate form of Sufi-influenced Islam. But there are signs that even some of those beliefs may have shifted to the right. An influential group of 500 clerics and scholars from the Barelvi sect, which opposes the Taliban, praised Taseer's assassination.
The Jamat Ahle Sunnat group said no one should pray or express regret for the killing of the governor. The group also issued a veiled threat to other opponents of the blasphemy laws.
"The supporter is as equally guilty as one who committed blasphemy," the group warned in a statement, adding politicians, the media and others should learn "a lesson from the exemplary death."
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and other senior ruling party officials joined up to 6,000 mourners under tight security to pay homage to Taseer at a funeral in the eastern city of Lahore. Other parties, including the main opposition Pakistan Muslim League-N, which is more aligned with religious groups, had limited presence at the event.

After the service was delayed because several clerics refused to lead it.

The response to Taseer's murder among ordinary Pakistanis seemed mixed. Some praised Qadri for targeting the governor, who in recent weeks had spoken forcefully in favor of clemency for a Christian woman sentenced to die for allegedly insulting Islam's Prophet Muhammad.
"Salman Taseer committed a grave crime calling the blasphemy law a 'black law,'" said 30-year-old Ghulam Murtaza, a farmer on the outskirts of the southern port city of Karachi.
Others condemned the killing.
"It is sad that he spoke from the heart and was murdered," said Farhat Firdous, a communications professional in Karachi.
But even critics said the government must be very careful about how it deals with the blasphemy laws, which rights activists say are used to settle rivalries and persecute religious minorities....

The problem does not end with the "abuse" of the law: inherently abusive laws often lend themselves to further abuse, but there is no "right" way to apply a law that is wrong.

That gets my vote for Bizarre Jihad-Related Headline of the year, and it's only January. "Broken bottles" instead of "rose petals" would actually have indicated a healthier moral atmosphere, which says very sad things about Pakistan.

Alas, if a relatively sane Pakistani governor falls in the MSM, does he make a sound?

They have the right to be as insane as they want to be; but why are we (the US) giving them $9 billion to do so, when we can't afford to help our own citizens?

http://whyyouexist.blogspot.com

The Muslim mind is so warped by time and Islam that there is no rational line of thought among Muslims.

America should withdraw completely from Afganistan, Pakistan and all parts of the Muslim world.

The problems with Muslims and terrorism would be solved as the sane world sits back to watch Muslims destroy themselves.

Problem solved.

Being a murderer is an honored Islamic tradition....

How goes the westernization of our dear Porkie ally?

50 years of friendship and billions of dollars of us tax payer money later, we do have some degree of enlightened western thinking among the Porkies. Such westernization as building nukes to kill the infidels better, using modern warplanes and other military to suppress any dissent and to kill infidels better. Using modern western types of communication media to spread sharia and to crow about all the Porkie achievements and how much they hate the western infidels and how they are going to accomplish their goals of killing the infidels better.
Yes, all those sacrifices you have done for the Porkies have not gone to waste. Just consider their contributions as job security for the US military industrial complex and a steady source of jobs for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines.

This story is all over the 'Net. Don't know about the MSM, don't watch anymore. Lawyers and rose petals! Even Judge Ito wouldn't touch this one! This could become a classic of islamic (in)justice; plead guilty and be aquitted. There won't be any rose petals for the judge who passes sentence on the assassin. Just death; Islam's fits-all answer for everything.

That poor woman must be given asylum in the United States. Is there a petition? How do we start one?

That dirty scum who offered money for her murder must be arrested, tried and sentenced for conspiracy to commit murder. If he is not then the world will know for sure the sort of man Murbarak really is. Why won't he be? SHARIA and Murbaraks unwillingness to govern his own country.

Weave02 : America should withdraw completely from Afganistan, Pakistan and all parts of the Muslim world.

Alas, it would do no good as the islamic pustule has burst its confines and seeped into every area of decent civilization.

Well, their progress is a bit disappointing, and it should also be noted that this progress is assisted by another great American ally, Saudi Arabia that funds madrassas and mosques in Pakistan, and in much of the rest of the world. But don't worry, there's a quick fix for it all - just give them Israel and there'll be world peace.

/"liberal" strategist

Isn't it interesting that the leftists who like to dredge up the charge of "McCarthyism" as a way of accusing their critics of attempted censorship are nowhere to found when it comes to the pervasive muzzling of criticism and the muderous intimidation from Sharia-minded Muslims. These Pakis make Joe McCarthy look like a screaming libertarian.

"... Pakistan's journey over the past several decades from a nation defined by moderate Islam to one increasingly influenced by fundamentalists willing to use violence ...."

That's rich! Pakistan was born in violence; its creation was demanded by Indian Moslems in the discussions with the British about Indian independence because they refused to live in an Hindu-majority country. It was created specifically as a Moslem country, an "anti-India"; its name in Urdu means "land of the pure". After the partition some six million Hindus, Sikhs, and others fled for their lives to India. As a mini-empire of several languages and ethnic groups, Islam is virtually the only unifying force in the country. (For the first few decades of independence, the heritage of British legal and administrative arrangements also served as a unifying factor, but these have been pretty much eliminated, as this murder and the popular reaction to it show.)

Savages celebrate their thuggery.

Abu_Lahab

Would agree that Islam has spread to every part of humanity, including all the horrors that accompany the ideology.

As Desidude points out Western investment in Pakistan has been a total failure. Many still believe there is a cause and reason to fight Muslims and terrorism that comes with Islam on the world stage.

With the spread of Islam, countries need to focus on the cancer within their own borders. Not in far reaches of the globe such as Afghanistan and the larger Muslim world, where there is no hope of achieving anything that resembles constructive humanity.

If Murbarak continues to refuse to govern his own country or prevent the ascendancy of a fantaticism that will eventually see him assassinated then India should govern his country for him.

And all Western Nations should support them 100 percent.

I am curious. Pakistan has been a sovereign nation for a few decades now. Has anyone read a positive story coming out of there that wasn't about foreign aid distribution or someone fighting oppression by the culture or the state? Surely there must have been but I don't recall reading one in my lifetime. Have they done anything charitable unconected to their military interests or the spreading of islam?

I am sure a Pakistani Governement worker is reading this like the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood read pages about the Coptic massacres in egypt. So can YOU (yes, you there, the pasty faced kid behind that computer monitor in the ISI propoganda department - yah, you) provide one positive story or fact that has appeared in a recognisable major US, UK or Europian newspaper that fits my description and also wasn't a paid advert by the Pakistani Government? (no complaining about western bias)

And while you are at it you can explain why Murbarak won't make sure that villanous Imam or whatever isn't prosecuted for starting a conspiracy to commit murder against that village woman falsely accused of blasphemy (but really arrested for being a christian).

And maybe you explain the reason some hindus in pakistan have been ordered by the government to start wearing a distinctive red patch?

We know you are reading this. Your lack of a proovably creditable responce will speak volumes. And the proof better be real or we will be able to prove it within minutes.

Your reward will be that you have given the world one little reason pakistan has justified it's existance beyond it's ability to field terrorists.

The clock is ticking. It really is.

500 UK terrorists targeted by police and MI5

MORE than 500 British Islamic extremists are planning terror strikes in the UK, according to secret figures obtained by the Daily Mirror.

Some of the jihadists, who are being watched by MI5 and counter-terror police, have already obtained bomb-making materials.

The figure, which fluctuates between 450 and 550, represents the number of monthly live investigations carried out by undercover spooks at any one time.

union Jihad...

what do you think the neo-nazi : muslim ratio is in NY's Union?

What a joke Britain has become. The British people must demand loudly and if necessary riotously that their government stop mass immigration. It makes no sense. Take your country back!

In 1902, American followers of the arab murder-cult, published a forgery - "The Oath of the Prophet Mohammed to the Followers of the Nazarene" - which supposedly stated jihad-monkey' commitments to Christians, in face of Anglo-French moves in Egypt and Palestine.

The fine print notes dating: "the 2nd year of hejira." They wouldn't want dhimmis to think about the Medinan cum Meccan abrogations. For those unaware, islam's fake "prophet" sought conversion to Judaism, as long as he was recognized as a "prophet," but turned against the "people of the book" (ahl-kitab) when they saw that he was a FRAUD: the "last prophet" fiction came much later, and was likely concocted to advance the imperial and plunder lusts of the first caliphs (successors), or "rushdoonis." Any revision by another con-man, could have threatened their booty holdings. Muhammed Abdullah (nominal slave of the concocted arab deity) also gave succession to abu-Bakr, in exchange for his turnover of his 6 year old daughter, to satisfy Muhammad's pedophile lusts. Islam is a disease of the mind; muslims are its carriers.

Pakistani lawyers say, "Hi! We're barbarians unworthy of participating in civilized activities!"
They care nothing for civilization or the benefits thereof. islam and the mohammedans that practice it are the anchor that drags humanity beneath the waves of indecency and Death.
islam means the end of humanity, therefore we must end islam.
It's a matter of self-preservation.

islam is a lie and
Truth is killing it.

I don't know the criteria for being a 'lawyer' in Pakistan but I assume these people go to the Pakistani version of law school for at least a few years. Lawyers are usually civilized, educated people and while there are plenty of radical lawlyers in the U.S. (ACLU, SPLC, etc.), they don't publicly celebrate murder or offer tributes to murderers. The 'lawyers' in Pakistan appear to be among the most radical, fanatical muslims in the country. The 'law' in Pakistan is a bigger joke than its deranged citizenry and I fear this benighted islamic hellhole is about to disintegrate into pure anarchy. I hope somebody sane is watching the nukes.

I hope somebody sane is watching the nukes.

amen...

The situation that could easily evolve from this is that senior Pakistani government officials are murdered on a daily basis. A shrug of the shoulders and the comment that Mr. X was a 'blasphemer' is all that is required to excuse/justify the crime.

Nuclear-armed madhouse. America sure could use a President right now.

The islam-cult's pedophile founder, once murdered a prisioner of war. After 1400 years, his ideological spawn are still slaughtering non-muz and apostates.

Plot to kill Afghan VP foiled

KABUL: Afghanistan’s spy agency said on Wednesday it had arrested a five-member terror cell in Kabul shortly before they attempted to assassinate the country’s first vice president.

Chaos over Mumtaz Qadri’s court appearance

ISLAMABAD: A planned court appearance for Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, the killer of Governor Punjab Salman Taseer, ran into chaos on Thursday as extremist supporters prevented an attempt to re-locate the session, witnesses said.

Mumtaz Qadri, who was assigned to Salman Taseer’s security detail and confessed to the killing, was charged and ordered to appear before the Anti-Terrorist Court in Rawalpindi on Thursday.

But as a growing crowd of extremist lawyers and madrassah students descended on the building in support of Qadri, authorities instead drove him to a makeshift court hastily set up in a heavily protected building in Islamabad.

But the crowd in Rawalpindi set up a cordon in protest, preventing the judge from leaving for Islamabad, lawyers and an AFP reporter said.

“We requested the judge that legally he cannot go to Islamabad to hear the accused and he accepted our request,” lawyer Malik Waheed Anjum told reporters.

“The judge ordered Islamabad police to present the accused in his court in Rawalpindi,” he added.

More than seven hours after journalists first gathered at the Rawalpindi court for the expected hearing, Qadri finally arrived and was feted with rose petals by supporters for the second day running.

Police officials in Islamabad were unavailable for comment.

I find this passage interesting as the "liberal" Left of the Western political system seems to have adopted Islam, in particular, fundamentalist Islam as an ally, a one sided one as the camaraderie only spreads one way.

The description of the Christian Conservatives is mostly associated with the term "Right Wing," yet it is very rare, this being an exception) to hear of extreme Islam being described as "Right Wing."

'Blasphemous' Asia Bibi facing suicide attack threat in Pakistan

Bibi, the Christian woman who triggered a blasphemy furore in Pakistan and in whose defence Punjab governor Salman Taseer lost his life, is facing a threat of a suicide attack inside a jail, where she is currently lodged.

The "Moaviya group", a militant organisation plans to mount a suicide attack on Sheikhupura district jail, where 45-year-old Asia is being held, The Express Tribune quoted its sources as saying. An intelligence report issued last week has corroborated threat to her life.

"It is sad that he spoke from the heart and was murdered,"

Yes but he did not speak from the Quran or the Hadiths or the schools of Islamic jurisprudence. They all call for the execution of this poor brave girl.

All those Pakistanis who truly mourn the loss of brave Salman Taseer should be honest with themselves and dump this fraud of a religion, this cult of a false and murderous prophet.

Islam: the religion that teaches you you are God. You may kill others if they commit "blasphemy," defined as expressing tolerance for other points of view (e.g., believing in religions other than Islam). And you may do so in a cowardly fashion, shooting unarmed people in the back. And you may DEMAND, not ask, that others not pray or express sympathy for the person you have murdered.

Islam, the religion that teaches its believers to be infantile narcissists, act as if they have the RIGHT of life and death over others. To act as if they are GOD.

This religion celebrates power, violence, and killing.

Humility, "compassion and mercy," my ass.

"SHOWERED....WITH ROSE PETALS"! Not even roses can mask the stench of Islam in my nose!

Pakistan is finished. Perhaps President Avatar (Obama) can be persuaded to do something about their nuclear weapons before the followers of Mighty Mo shower civilization with radiation.

Do you think President Franklin D. Roosevelt would have made a different arrangement with the Saudis in February of 1945 if he could have seen the current world.

The West needs its nuclear weapons now more than ever.

Just saying...

Islam is like rattlesnakes. Would you make treaties with rattlesnakes or invite them to imigrate to your home?

Anti-blasphemy laws are sharia laws...It's a violation of sharia law to oppose sharia law, and automatically makes a Mahoundian an apostate worthy of penalty...If there is no Islamic authority to kill the apostate it is the duty, under sharia for any or many Mahoundians to kill the apostate themselves...There is no Islamic penalty for killing an apostate, because all Mahoundians are obligated to Allah's laws...Those that fulfill Allah's laws deserve rose petals...
That Bibi is a Christian proves that sharia is not just directed at Mahoundians...Molly Norris, and the cartoonist Vilks, among others, have discovered this for themselves...Judge Vicky, are you listening?

Thus, makes us wonder why Hussein Obama, suspected Islamic Trojan horse is demanding to increase weapon aid to this vile Islamic-ruled country Pakistan 2billion early this year?! As of another vile Islamic-ruled country Saudi Arabia with a disgustingly 60billion weapon aid?!

Death of Salman Taseer is a huge blow to freedom fighters everywhere. We need to show solidarity with his cause and those who are fighting their lonely war. Our common enemies thrive by isolating their targets.

This is all Asia Bibi's fault for converting and starting this backlash. (sark off)

And neither the Republicans or the phony "Tea Party" will oppose aid to Pakistan or arms sales to Saudi Arabia as long as the corporations that sponsor/control them are making Billions of dollars from this.

1. Was Mumtaz Qadri acting in support of Al Qaeda, or Mohammed? (The distinctions are a little blurred IMO, PBUH, BFD)
2. Has Imam Rauf condemned this assassination publicly? Has Obama?
3. Katie Couric suggested recently that America needs a "Muslim Cosby Show." Will she be the first to soggest the plots?

I beg your pardon sir. I am a Tea Party member and I object to your use of the word "phony" to describe me and my fellow Tea Party members.

We are the ones that you will find opposing sharia law. We are the ones that are aware of the threats to our Freedom, our Liberty.

You should avail yourself of the information available to the average citizen through the likes of Dennis Praeger, Mark Levin, Rusty Humphries and the like before you call me and my fellow Tea Party members "phony".
I will attempt to contain my anger at being called a "phony" by you as you are clearly aware of your surroundings or you would not be here at Jihadwatch. You might want to check the width of that brush you are painting with.
I am not a phony nor are the members of the Tea Party that I associate with. We are, perhaps, the only thing standing between Socialism and Liberty here in the US and Conservatives, who make up the Tea Party are most certainly the only voices you will hear in opposition to sharia law and islam in general.

That said...Happy New Year to my fellow Warriors against the global jihad...you included. Assuming you don't insult me and my fellow Conservative Americans again any time soon...;)

islam is a lie and
Truth is killing it.

It's not surprising at all that barbarism and murderous intent will trump rational thinking and morality every single time.

True...sorta, that to defeat the enemy we must become him. I take it 10 steps further than that. We must not become the enemy. We must become something far worse than the enemy.
So, we become monsters to kill monsters. What then is the difference between us and them?...
The difference is that in the heat of battle our soldiers will stand in front of the civilian, fight for and shield the Woman and Child. Our enemies use those same lives to shield his own.
The difference is that when we have conquered our enemies, we have freed them and left the choice between slavery and Liberty up to them.
The difference is that once the war is over we can become men and women once more. Our enemies, those that exhort others to kill and those that kill in the name of the moon god cannot be changed. They are what they are and only they can change that, and we see how much of that is going around.
A moderate in Pakistan who seeks rational discourse on a subject of law? Dead at the hands of a...what amounts to...a Thugee. Worshipers of Death... I see little difference between the two cults. One ended and so should this one as it will not be reformed. Here is clear evidence of what happens to those that seek to drag islam in to this century.
Murdered by a barbarian who is then praised by his fellow barbarians as they gather to celebrate Death.

islam is a lie and
Truth is killing it.

What this situation amounts to is that Pakistan has very anti-democratic blasphemy-laws. Instituted AND maintained by zealous Muslims. To such a degree that one of them considered it his Islamic duty to condemn to death and murder a good man, on the grounds of advocating the dismissal of these anti-democratic blasphemy-laws.

To this he and the Muslims were exhorted and for this he was praised. By how many? I think very many. Were these zealous Muslims, who are clearly enemies of the democratic system, thinking only about Pakistan or do they want these laws for the whole world, carried out by the Ummah? Very probably the latter.

These zealous Muslims form an identifiable core of enemies of the Democratic system. How many of them are there? How many Muslims still profess, openly or secretly first and foremost, if not only, loyalty to the Ummah?

I think that the default position of all Muslims should be declared, in Democratic Nations, that they are under the Ummah, siding with and supporting bitter enemies of the democratic system. I think with the mountains of evidence we have a majority of citizens of democratic nations should and can reasonably agree with this default-position of Muslims.

Of course, most of the Muslims are "sleeping", harmless for now. But to be held accountable none the less, as religion is supposed to be a choice, not a race. And that will mean stopping all immigration of Muslims into democratic nations, because of this default-position.

And assigning Muslims to this default-position will put ever more pressure on them to either apostasize, reform (which is what so many political-correct people say they will eventually automatically do) or migrate out from democratic nations.

My Response -
I disagree with you Katharina that Obama is a 'trojan horse', although his actions on this issue have made me suspicious of him also.(and I do acknowledge that you used the word suspected.) As for him 'demanding' that the money be spent, appropriations have to be approved by Congress for the most part, although it is true that presidents are allocated discretionary funds. I agree with you that we should drastically cut aid to Pakistan and shouldn't sell any weapons to Saudi Arabia, but I don't think that it's going to happen. The lobbies for arms manufacturers are just too entrenched, especially in support of the Republican party.

AlaskanInfidel, I mentioned the Tea party along with the Republicans because in my opinion it was not a grass roots movement but a ploy engineered from the top down by the Republicans to get votes from Libertarian minded people to push their agenda. I didn't say that Tea party members themselves were phony, but in my opinion, they were used.
I've been following politics for about thirty years now and I've seen the Republicans do this before. They appeal to Liberatarian and laissez-faire Capitalists by talking about Individual Rights, Liberty, Capitalism and minimal government, but when in office, they have spent just as much, if not more than the Democrats. They also have no qualms about passing laws that degrade our liberties. The national debt increased at a much faster rate under Reagan and the two Bushes than it did under Carter or Clinton. Clinton even balanced the budget! (although I admit there was some budgetary slight of hand that allowed him to claim that.)
I find myself greatly amused to hear many of the same arguments that I believed in when I was a Republican/Libertarian/Ayn Rand devotee being used today because I don't agree with many of those things any longer. When Clinton was in office, I thought that he was going to turn America into some Socialist totalitarian state and that we were all going to lose our Freedoms and Liberties. But it didn't happen did it? Even Bush II/Cheney, with there massively increased spending on spying (much of it directed at the American people themselves, some of it just plain illegal {so much for republican respect fo the law}), didn't turn the US into the Fascist state that the Democrats/Liberals thought he would. I really don't think there is anything to be gained by these accusations of secret totalitarian wishes leveled by the two 'wings' of the polity at each other. Nor do I believe that the Tea Party and Conservatives are "the only thing standing between Socialism and Liberty here in the US."
As for educating myself, well, I've read at least 200 books in my lifetime (I'm 38), including all of Ayn Rand's works, The Wealth of Nations, and many other books on politics, philosophy, science and other subjects. People like Dennis Prager, Rush Limbaugh, and that idiot Glenn Beck are intellectual lightweights whom I usually just ignore. (I did hear Dennis Prager give good advice once to a couple about their relationship when he was on TV. He's probably the most decent of the three, and truthfully, I am not familiar with much of what he says. Sorry if my lumping him in with those other two disturbs you.)
I would agree with you AI about the danger presented to the US by the Global Islamic Jihad and the fact that conservatives are more educated about this than liberals. It does have to do with basic beliefs and assumptions that both sides have, and how they affect what stands they will take on issues and events. So, I think one of the standing questions that needs to be answered is "How do those of us concerned about this issue convince democrats and liberals that despite their philosophical beliefs, they are wrong about this issue and it it very dangerous to our country for them to be so?

Respectfully yours, Will Doohan

I am 54 years of age and cannot begin to tell you how many books on politics and religion I have read...watching the various Presidents has left me with a sense of what a President should be and do...I've seen a few come and go.
I was so far to the left when I was 15 that in Junior High at the end of the year, I was given an award for "Most Liberal Student". It was a clenched left fist with a little plaque with my name on it.
3 years later I was a Conservative but didn't know it. Paying taxes and watching people buy lobster with food stamps will do that to you.

"When Clinton was in office, I thought that he was going to turn America into some Socialist totalitarian state and that we were all going to lose our Freedoms and Liberties. But it didn't happen did it?"
No. But baby steps were taken. The waters were tested and what could be done was. Baby steps are what this is about. They have been making them for 40 years now. We did not reach this point over night.
Socialism has been pushed back for a short time, but will continue to advance due to the lack of short term memory on the part of the American People.
As for your final question...engagement. They can only deny that the sky is blue for so long. Calling me a racist, islamophobe, extremist et al can only work for so long.

islam is a lie and
Truth is killing it.
