In this case, of course, he appears to be saying that the terrorists are twisting and hijacking Islam, but he could also mean that what the jihadis are doing is not terrorism. If they took him up on that, it would be a first. Very, very important point. You can find a Muslim "condemning terrorism", and with close reading realize that they are actually condemning Israel, say, while giving Jihad terrorism a free pass.

Notice the paranoia and conspiracy theory rumblings in this—especially notable since Western media in general has done so much to give Islam the "benefit of the doubt" and more in every case.
There is *no indication* on Erdogan's part that it might have been the actions of Muslims acting in the name of Islam itself that might have given anyone the idea that "Islam" might have any links to "terrorism".
If Islam is made to "look bad", in any way—then surely it must be the work of Islam's enemies, and not just the reasonable conclusions of those who look at the situation rationally.

I was watching the movie "mars attacks" last night, when the aliens started talking to us humans at the first meeting on earth. the language translator was sayiny things like we come in peace, we are your friends, and then they start shooting everyone, well after a bit of a battle the aliens talking through the language translator tell everyone it was all a mistake and we should all get back together, and be friends.
