I HATE islam but I believe that the majority of Muslims, even the minority educated ones, do not understand the hate contained in their "religion". Some do. Loads rejoiced worldwide when the twin towers were destroyed. In Gaza no less - but we still provide "aid" to this apparently very prosperous "refugee camp" where new BMWs and Mercs abound far more than in the more prosperous west. Gaza has expanded from 250,000 in 1948 to 1.5m now. 60 years and a daily increasing demand for food aid. WHEN will we learn?

Antony Loewenstein, not among my favourite authors, has a good chapter on Saudi bloggers in his book. Blogging must be seen in the overall context of electronic information, and Saudi authorities will always be playing catch-up, bailing with a sieve.

Why is anyone protesting about this? Islam allows complete freedom of thought and expression, so long as you think exactly whats in the Quran and the Hadiths. It allows complete freedom of religion, so long as your religion is Islam.

The internet and the blogosphere is like the printing press of the Reformation. The battle is between free flow of ideas and censorship and mind control.

Our leadership and our press are failing us. They are mouthing the propaganda of the totalitarians. To criticise is disrespectful. Islam is not our enemy. Bin Laden and his ilk are not Islamic terrorists, they are simply terrorists. By definition Islam and Muslims can do no wrong. Thus whenever Muslims do wrong they are simply not Muslims and Islam remains unscathed, pure and perfect.

The defence of our freedoms rests in the hands of the humble bloggers. Keep up the good fight.

I will be watching to see if that cyber group "Anonymous" that had it's say about Wikileaks, does anthing about this. That will show us all with whome Julian Asange and his supporters real allegiance lie. If they really give a shit about freedom of information they will do something spectacular over this. If they are actually a propoganda project by a foreign country they won't do anything about it.

Unfortunatly we know what Obama will do. Absolutely nothing. It looks to me like his whole program of reaching out to the muslim world, which I supported whole heartedly, has not worked at all. It seems to have emboldened the Islamists all over the world to commit worse terrors against a wider range of victims.

People said that engaging the soviets actually empowered them and the anti vietnam war movement emboldened the Viet Cong and ruined peace talks with them. Obama's attempts to reach out to the Islamic world has been taken as a sign of weakness and aquiesence and has directly led to a step up of the international jihad. Only the firm hand will work against totalitarians. And only when that hand holds a gun.

Let's be honest here. It is also an extortion scheme. Officials will look for any statement that can be twisted into appearing like an infraction and then strong arm the blogger into paying them off to go away or or to reissue a licence.

The larger or more profitable a site the bigger the bribe it will take to keep running.

I don't know about corruption in Saudi Arabia specifically but we all know about corruption in 3rd world (and especially arabic) countries. In many of those countries not only is it completely acceptable for beurocrats to "feed at the troth", you are considered a fool for not doing so.

I'm blogging from Saudi right now and haven't heard of any restrictions so far. For foreign workers it might depend on who the employer is and whether they are protected. For me it hasn't been an issue and don't think it will be.

Its the time Saudi Government understands the most important requirement of any government system is the individual freedom and the laws allowing the individual freedom to thrive and flourish.
