Of this, I highly doubt. The more people learn what Islam embraces and espouses as a religion, the more repulsed by it they become.

Many Muslims around the world have made it clear you cannot be a Muslim without belief in Sharia law. For you to say that Sharia is not necessary, you are lying or have the wrong impression about Islam in general. Just take a look at countries like Pakistan and Indonesia which are in the throes of embracing blasphemy laws. What is incompatible with Islam are the human rights enshrined in the US Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, and Constitution of the United States, and UDHR. Specifically the democratic electorate of Turkey is undermining the Kemalist system, which "was" a Constitutional system backed by a judiciary, and military system to insulate the central government from the democratic desires of Turkish Muslims. An important distinction to make. This is why it is such a travesty to spend American blood and treasure creating Constitutional Republics in the Islamic world. They can create and enforce no Constitution acceptable by us and enforce it without subverting the democratic will of the Muslims. A lesson we should extrapolate to immigration and domestic policies.

Let's deal with this old canard.

In the late 18th Century, what the Arabs call the Maghreb, the western part of North Africa, was known by Europeans as the Barbary Coast (Barbary after the Berber population). There were four polities. One was the independent Sultanate of Morocco. The other three, in the Turkish vilayet of Tripoli but only nominally under the suzerainity of the Ottoman Turkish Sultan, were Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli. Both Turkish and Moroccan Sultans claimed the title of Caliph. All four Barbary states were bases for piracy by 'Barbary Corsairs'. Capture of merchant ships and enslaving or ransoming of the ships' crews provided the muslim rulers with wealth and naval power.

Before the American War of Independence, shipping from American ports was under the protection of the British Navy and Flag (Britain had treaties with the four Barbary states). When the American Colonies were fighting the British they entered into a defensive alliance with France (Franco-American Treaty of Amity and Commerce) in 1778 which provided protection for American ships until the de facto end of military cooperation in 1783. By signing the treaty in 1778 the French had recognised American independence.

In 1777, the Sultan of Morocco included the United States in a list of countries to which Morocco’s ports were open. He gave that list to European envoys in Morocco, which was tacit recognition of the USA. He said that the ports were open, not that shipping was protected at sea, nor that tribute would not be exacted.

On October 11, 1784, Morocco seized the brigantine Betsey, the first act of piracy against shipping of a newly independent United States. Algiers captured two American ships in 1785. The Spanish government acting as intermediary negotiated with Morocco ransome for the freedom of the captured ship and crew. Spain advised the United States to do what European powers did which was to offer of an annual tribute to prevent further attacks against merchant ships. At that time the US did not have a powerful navy. US Minister to France, Thomas Jefferson sent envoys to Morocco and and the other Barbary states to try to "purchase" treaties and the freedom of captured American sailors held by Algiers.

Morocco was the first Barbary state to sign a treaty with the United States on June 23, 1786. This treaty stopped all Moroccan seizure of American shipping in return for an annual cash tribute. The treaty also stipulated that should any captured Americans, whether captured by Moroccans or by other Barbary states, be on a ship docking at a Moroccan port, the Americans would be set free and be under the protection of the Sultan of Morocco.

Negotiations with Algiers and Tripoli did not go well, resulting in the re-establishment of the US Navy and the two 'Barbary Wars'. Hence the words '..shores of Tripoli..' in the lyric of the US Marines' Hymn.

In 1785, when Jefferson and John Adams went to call on Tripoli's envoy to London, Sidi Haji Abdrahaman, they enquired of him "concerning the ground of the pretensions to make war upon nations who had done them no injury". They asked him by what right the Pasha of Tripoli extorted money and took slaves. Jefferson later reported his reply to Secretary of State John Jay, and to the Congress:

The ambassador answered us that [the right] was founded on the Laws of the Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise. He said, also, that the man who was the first to board a vessel had one slave over and above his share, and that when they sprang to the deck of an enemy's ship, every sailor held a dagger in each hand and a third in his mouth; which usually struck such terror into the foe that they cried out for quarter at once.

Abdrahaman added that a commission paid directly to Tripoli — and another paid to himself — would secure a temporary leniency.

After the successful conclusion of the second Barbary War against Tripoli the USA was strong enough militarily to "re-negotiate" treaties and from 1816 paid no further tribute payments to any of the Barbary States.

So much for friendly relations between the USA and the Barbary Coast states including Morocco. The USA bought off the terrorists until such time as they were strong enough to refuse to submit to their demands.

Morocco is now on better terms with the USA, having assisted in interrogation of suspected Al-Qaeda detainees.

I can guess that name like Bampett Mohammed or Yusuf ben Ali might have come from erstwhile or current African slaves and/or wandering Middle Easterners who ended up in America. But Salem was a rather popular name among Puritans and related Christians, who were numerous in 18th century America, and already proselytizing among slaves and former slaves. Salem was one of the biblical names for Jerusalem, and was given to a Massachusetts town later famous for its witch trials.

I'm not doubting that Muslims made it to colonial and early independence America. The Dutch in New Amsterdam record an Egyptian named Nosreddine who got himself killed by local Indians over some bad trades. In late 18th century Washington, there was a Guinea-born free black by the name of Yerrow/Yarrow/Yaro who dealt in real estate, got wealthy enough to get his portrait painted by one of the Peale family, and had to be buried in his garden when he died because, records say, he was of the "Mohammedan" faith. His descendants are still scattered over Maryland and Virginia, but are mostly Baptists.

Yet the place of Islam among African-Americans in those days is more likely overstated rather than understated. Given that most African slaves came from points between what are now Liberia and Angola (especially the area between the Niger Delta and Congo Estuary), most probably arrived on these shores as Animists, with perhaps a handful of Roman Catholics. And they Christianized rather rapidly afterwards.

Bhobby, while you and I are generally on the same side, I have to admit that I've developed a bit of an interest in the history of African-American freedmen in early America--although I don't claim to be an expert. It started when I studied [Evangelical] church history, got stimulated a bit when I met a man who claimed that most of his ancestors had been "free persons of color" long before the Civil War, and then grew after taking a position teaching in a mostly African-American and Hispanic school. While I try not to romanticize anyone, I still think that the story of early America's free blacks may be an interesting and neglected chapter of our history.

Hello Kepha - The freed slaves and other Blacks in early America is something any student of American history is aware of. It's simply a part of, although a very small part of, early America. The aspect of it that has interested me is that in the American colonies during the 1700s there was not what we know today as a racialist ideology (even though there was slavery). Slavery does not require an explicit race ideology, and there wasn't one. Alexander Hamilton, a revered founding father of the U.S., was a mulatto. Hamilton was quite well respected by his contemporaries. He was George Washington's private secretary. (The pseudoscientific theory of racism was invented and popularized during the 1800s).

Personally, I'm more interested in the details about the colonial New England Puritans, because Puritanism was the main seminal influence in the creation of American intellectual, literary, and political culture. Freed slaves existed but weren't very relevant to the early development of the American mentality and institutions. But if you check out the curriculum of secondary schools and higher education in the U.S. today you would think the history of American Blacks was the most important thing youngsters should know about. It's ludicrous, and depressing.

Actually, some corrections for you, Mr Raheem Franics and Joseph Saba are in no way Muslims based at least on their names, Saba is a popular last name in the Levant region and it is exclusivley associated with Christian famililes. Given that most of early middle-easter immigrants to America were from the LEvant region my educated guess would be the were as such. Well, I agree that current social studies curricula give too much to the position of "wymyn" and minorities--but only because these growd out everything else; even if I have developed an interest in the world of the freedmen. As for the Puritans, they barely get mention of the Mayflower Compact. This is one reason why I, a social studies teacher in a public High School, sometimes see myself as a professional swindler.

However, if you're interested in the Puritans, the Banner of Truth Trust may still be in operation publishing some of their theological tracts and sermons.

There is also a fair amount of material on colonial America and even on the role of the Calvinist clergy in American independence; although a lot written by "secular" scholars tends to misunderstand the theology or get misled by the secondary literature.

BTW, the Puritans are another interest of mine; although I also feel a strong affinity for the continental Reformed as well.
