Yes, indeed, Tanstaafl. A great deal of this—from Iran's point of view, at least, is about Sunni/Shi'ite jockeying. Iran's arch-rival, Sunni Saudi Arabia, has had to stay pretty much silent during this whole crisis, lest their own natives get restless, and threaten the "stability" of the family concern.

Iran has already muscled in on the Sunni Middle East with the growing influence of Iran-backed Hizb'allah in Syria and Lebanon.

Your concern is that the jihad has penetrated the NSA? The NSA in the linked article is the National Spiritual Assembly (of the Bahá'ís of the United States), not the National Security Agency. Was that your concern? The article is not clear until near the end which NSA is being described.

BTW, the Bahá'ís - as you probably know - have been horribly treated by many Muslims as apostates, especially in Iran. Once I was driving with my wife and saw what looked like another mosque being built in my local area. I pulled into the site and saw that the plaque on the facade said it was a Bahá'í house of worship. Okay!

Rubbish. You're sooo living in your imagination. Try looking at it in a more realistic way, based also on historical precedence.

For starters, even in the apocalyptic scenario where we are pushed to the brink of extermination and use WMD to prevent our genocide, it'll most likely be enough to wipe out one Muslim capital, or two, or four, or one whole Muslim country, or two, before they surrender or reach some kind of ceasefire after realizing that if they don't we can go on. Even in Islam, if the Muslims know they can't win they are allowed to reach a ceasefire. I don't know what is the quantity and quality of WMD Israel possesses, but we can make more. If the Pakistanis can, and if Iran can get the materials for money, so can we.

But there are many other options before we reach this Armageddon scenario.

Firstly, a substantial part of the Iranian people hate the regime and would like to overthrow it, so we, maybe together with some sensible western countries, can support and arm the opposition to carry out a revolt. They can even be helped from outside with tactical military intervention. Not an invasion like the Americans and allies did in Iraq, but tactical bombing of selected regime-related targets in coordination with the rebels to help them out as they have no air force of their own. A regime change in Iran will have a significant effect because they are funding a lot of terror and incitement around the world and you can find their fingers meddling everywhere in the Middle East. After the counter-revolution the Iranian people are more likely to develop a democracy than others in the ME because they've already experienced both secular dictatorships and a theocratic dictatorship and are disillusioned with both options. So this cooperation can serve two good causes: REAL freedom to the Iranian people, and a defeat to the Islamists in one of the most important battlefields, all with relatively limited bloodshed. Of course, thousands of people are going to get killed because this is the nature of war, but far from a WMD Armageddon.

Secondly, let's look at the oppressors and oppressed in the ME. Of course, the Islamic-Leftist axis tell you that in the ME the oppressors are the Israelis and the oppressed are the poor Arabs and Muslims, but in reality, outside the Islamic-Leftist haze bubble, the greatest oppressors in the ME are the Arabs and the oppressed are all the non-Arabs (not to mention the non-Muslim non-Arabs) because the Arabs, much like the Muslims, believe they are rightly entitled to every last grain of sand they've ever conquered. We're talking about tens of millions of non-Arabs, some of which would just love to be liberated from Arab rule and gain their deserved, long awaited and long overdue liberty and self-determination, neglected and denied because in WWI the British and French made a deal with the Arabs and ever since the powers sucked up to them because of their oil.

Most famous of these non-Arab nations is the Kurdish nation. Will the Kurds join the Islamist camp? Maybe. Many Kurds are not fanatic, some are quite secular, quite a few remember Islam was forced on their ancestors by the Arabs, but the Saudis and Iranians are hard at work there, so the Islamist camp might grow. But the Americans and allies did liberate the Kurds to a great extent. They don't have their own state, but they have an autonomy in southern Kurdistan (north Iraq) and are much better off than they were under Saddam. So most Kurds don't hate the Americans. There are at least some pro-American Kurds who see George W Bush as a liberator.

Curiously Kurdistan lies exactly on the Iranian axis - it's all from Allah, I tell you - the four countries holding parts of Kurdistan are Iran, its ally Syria, its more recent ally Turkey, and Iraq, where the domination struggle between Iran and Saudi Arabia just ended with an Iranian victory (though you might not know that if you rely on the BBC for world news). What effect do you think a successful armed Kurdish revolt might have on the conflict? Here again cooperation can serve two good causes: freedom and independence at last to the millennia old Kurdish people, and a defeat to the Islamists in a central battlefield.

And then there's Lebanon, currently under Syrian-Iranian control, against the will of most Lebanese. And again cooperation can achieve two good causes: free Lebanon and a defeat to the Islamists.

So in a more optimistic - and bold - scenario this conflict can result not only in defeat to the forces of darkness, but in the liberation of several peoples whose lives can dramatically improve compared to their pre-war situation.

Of course, a lot depends on the west. Surely a combination of pseudo-liberal leaders in the US and Europe would have starkly different views and policies from anti-Islamist pro-freedom combination of leaders the likes of Allen West and Geert Wilders.

Considering the source I'd take it with a grain of salt, but I wonder if the Obama and Samantha Power type of politicians ever give such considerations a thought. First, they betray all American allies thereby destroying American credibility in the eyes of both its allies and enemies. Then they reach out to or outright support some of the worst enemies of the US, such as Iran and the MB.

Now imagine what if the masses in Saudi Arabia, inspired by the success of their brethren in Egypt, revolt against the Saudi regime. Can the pro-democracy American government act any differently than it acted in the case of Egypt? That would show its hypocricy. But what if instead of the Saudi evil regime being replaced with democracy it'll be replaced with an even more radical Islamist regime, one affiliated with Al Qaeda, which is the opposition there? Then you will have Al Qaeda controlling the largest oil reserve in the world and armed with tones of American weapons. Just how genius is that?

But the Saudis are no fools. It's clear now the US cannot be trusted as it betrays all its allies, whether democratic or not. Being an American ally will not protect you, and is quite likely to get your head served to your enemies on a silver platter. Therefore, if the Saudis want to live, their best option is indeed to join the Iranian axis. The foreign minister of Iran said Iran highest priorities in foreign relations are Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Getting the Saudis on their side is the highest prize Iran can hope for. It'll make its power immense. Iran and Saudi Arabia are rivals for dominance in the region and the Muslim world, but if the Saudis fear losing control over their own "family business" with American backing to any revolt against the regime, they might decide joining Iran in return for full backing for the regime and a cut in the Islamic cake, even if they'll have to play second fiddle to Iran. If you can't beat them join them, particularly if your current strong ally is not an ally after all. Hey, if Israel could join Iran today, I'd recommend it to, to save our lives since America is highly likely to throw us under the bus as well. Together with Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil, China, Russia and North Korea we'll try bring down Big Satan. Yes, we can. With Obama anything can happen.

Remember the Sykes–Picot Agreement where Britain and France divided the MidEast into "influence zones" betweem them? Iran, Saudi Arabia and the neo-Ottomans can reach a similar agreement dividing the Muslim world into "influence zones" betweem them, end all rivalry and then turn united against the common enemies. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan are armed with American weapon, Turkey also with Israeli weapon. Smart!
