BANGLADESHI police arrested four people including a Muslim cleric today after a teenage girl, who was accused of having an extra-marital affair with her cousin, was whipped to death.
Allah said "flog each of them with a hundred stripes." No word on the man, but they got right to work on the teenage girl. The poor and marginalized consistently bear the brunt of Sharia's brutality.
Fifteen-year-old Hena Begum died in hospital on Monday after a village court in the southern Bangladesh district of Shariatpur sentenced her to 100 lashes, said local police chief A.K.M Shahidur Rahman.
"We have arrested one of the clerics (who sat on the village court) and three villagers including the wife of the man who Hena Begum had an illicit relationship with," Mr Rahman told AFP.
"Let not compassion move you," said the supposed creator of the universe.
According to Mr Rahman, the teenage girl was "beaten mercilessly" by the family of the married man, who was also Hena's cousin, after the affair was discovered.
"Let not compassion move you," said the allegedly "compassionate and merciful."
The teenager was then handed to the village court, which publicly whipped her until she passed out and was taken to hospital, where she died seven days later, he said.

In conservative rural parts of Muslim-majority Bangladesh, rights groups say it is common for women to be publicly whipped for "crimes" such as adultery despite a ban on such religious punishments.....

What an evil doctrine this is. I still have trouble understanding how Muslims born and educated in Western countries can sign up for Sharia law. When it comes to the thousands of people (especially women here in the UK) converting to this medieval insanity, words fail me. Do they think they will remain untouched by this aspect of Islam? I was surprised, Eastview, that the Dow and other indicators were up on Monday and Tuesday. Today the market is kinda' flat. I heard yesterday from one financial analyst that the American market looks attractive right now and that's why the past two days were so good, but, frankly, I don't know what to think anymore, though planning for the worst is still the best option I believe.
Apparently foreign bonds in the emerging markets arena are one place an investor definitely shouldn't be but if we get eight dollar a gallon gasoline, or even six, then things will tumble all around (except precious metals). The situation is very fluid right now and I have a nagging feeling that we're currently in the calm before the storm. Yes, Wellington, it is curious that the market has remained more or less flat, but frankly I don't see how they can remain that way if the situation deteriorates in Egypt, as it appears to be doing. Services and food are beginning to run out in Cairo and Alexandria, so the relatively peaceful protests up to now could very well grow ugly. I think it is prudent to adopt a conservative strategy just now to wait out the storm that appears to be brewing in Egypt, and possibly across the larger ME, and have started to move things around accordingly. It is good to see that you are also on top of the situation.
A side comment: I spent some time in Egypt fifteen years ago, and have many fond memories of the place. I have a whole scrapbook of pictures from Cairo, Alexandria and Luxor, including many from the very same places where the protests are occurring. In looking over my pictures I realized with a shock that a set of them was from a day I spent wandering around Al Azhar University and its mosque, where I got some great shots of both the interior and from the top of the minaret I took the liberty of climbing. Being before I had started to learn about Islam, I had no clue at the time what the significance of this place was. But I recognize in the crowd of protesters the characteristic Santa Claus hats of the Al Ahzar clerics, such as we see on these pages being worn by our favorite cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi.

"The teenager was accused of having an affair with a married man", "She was alleged to have had the affair with her cousin".
"Accused of" and "alleged to have". Notice the phrase "proved to have" did not appear.
Is an accusation the same thing as a conviction in Shariah law?
Are accusations taken at face value in certain offences in shariah?
I have also read (though I can't recall at the moment if it was from the original religious texts or contemporary shariah law) that it is essentially legal under shariah for a man to kill is wife if HE ONLY SUSPECTS her of something.

All is not black. The story said there was a protest and call for the punishment of all involved and whipping has been outlawed in Bangladesh for a year.
It is concievable that this village priest may not have been aware in the recent change in the law but he still deserves a bullet up his snout for ordering the whipping of a teenage girl.

She was beaten to death for being ACCUSED of a sexual crime under Sharia law. The "court" consisted of the accuser and the Imam and anyone the accuser could get to side with him. There are no rules of evidence and the woman is not even allowed to attend the meeting which decides her fate. Under Sharia law it is not "proper" for women to be involved in a discussion about sex with men, even when a woman is accused of something she can be murdered for. Besides, under Islam a woman's testimony is half that of a man, and it would take four witnesses to show innocents. Such convoluted, male-dominated abuse is Islamic jurisprudence.
