Soldier of our Afghan ally murders three German troops, wounds six others

As I have said many times in the context of many similar incidents in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is no reliable way to distinguish a peaceful Muslim from a jihadist. This is yet more fruit of the unwillingness to make even a cursory attempt to take that fact into account.

"Afghan soldier opens fire on German troops, killing 3 and wounding 6 others," by Anja Niedringhaus and Deb Riechmann for The Associated Press, February 18 (thanks to all who sent this in):

PUL-E-KHUMRI, Afghanistan - German soldiers, just back from patrol, had already started shedding their heavy body armour when shots rang out Friday at their coalition base in northern Afghanistan. An Afghan soldier, a man they thought was on their side, was spraying them with bullets at close range.

The shooter was gunned down, but not before he killed three German soldiers and wounded six others in a tragic shooting that highlights the challenges of trying to train Afghan security forces so foreign troops can go home.

The Afghan soldier in Baghlan's provincial capital, Pul-e-Khumri, was part of a joint operation between the German and Afghan militaries, Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg told reporters in Berlin.

"Working together carries risks," said Guttenberg, who earlier this week spent the night with German troops at the base in northeast Afghanistan. "Still, this attack may not lead to questioning the partnering (with the Afghan army) that has so far been successful because this would only serve our enemies."...

"It doesn't work, but we are hell bent on keeping on trying!"

Since late 2009, there have been three incidents of Afghan police and soldiers turning on their NATO comrades.

The U.S.-led NATO coalition is working with the Afghan National Security Forces to improve the way that police and soldiers are vetted so that infiltrators and criminals can be weeded out of the ranks, according to officials with the training mission in Kabul. The Afghan army and police are expected to start in mid-March collecting biometric and personal data on all members of the Afghan security forces -- a job that is expected to take months.

This will never work unless they start examining the attachment of the recruits to Islam and jihad, which would be devilishly difficult to do in any case, and which they will not do.

On Nov. 29, 2010, six U.S. soldiers were killed by a rogue Afghan border policeman who opened fire on his American trainers as the group headed to shooting practice. The gunman was killed in the shootout in Nangarhar province near the Pakistani border. The Taliban claimed responsibility, saying the officer had enlisted as a sleeper agent to have an opportunity to kill foreigners....

Eight similar incidents have occurred in Iraq since 2004....

The sad reality about Islam’s killers is this; Because Islam makes a continuous claim of religious legitimacy, Islam, as a system, can rely on a huge, unpaid, unseen, unorganized, individually acting, empowered to act, widely distributed group of highly motivated devout believers who are willing to kill in order to keep Islam the way it is.

Read the complete theory at http://islamsfatalflaw.blogspot.com/

"Since late 2009, there have been three incidents of Afghan police and soldiers turning on their NATO comrades."

We're infidels, not comrades. Someday Western armies will leave Afghanistan and if they're wise they'll lock the door on their way out. The "innocent" people of Afghanistan will have to fight their own battles for freedom and they will have to do it without outside assistance.

George W. Bush ought to come out of retirement (a la Jimmy Carter) and take a trip over to Afghanistan, and go on a speaking tour giving speeches to the peaceloving Afghani people. His topic? The inherently enchanting quality of the religion of Allah and the re-enchantment of Islam.

Leaving Afghanistan and cutting off all monies to Afghanistan are grand ideas...so is Banning Muslim Immigration.

Unfortunately the best policy is to ignore these kinds of attacks.

These attacks are not caused by some muslim just going berzerkoid at random. Someone directs them or specifically inspires them to do it. There are two results desireable to the enemey.

1. To make allied troops not want to mix with muslim troops. The result would be that muslim soldiers would then not absorb the values, goals and world view of the western troops. If they are not in contact it will be easier to make the muslim soldiers switch their view of nato from ally to alien invader.

2. To trick other muslim soldiers into thinking that this is what other muslims think this is the patriotic thing to do- thus making them more likely to do it themselves. I hope the muslim command tries to counter this way of thinking.

If those are the purposes of such an attack the only way to counter its purpose is to ignore it physically but counter it with education/propoganda directed at the muslim soldiers.

One thing that would help, if it is not being done already, is to agressively and realistically educate muslim soldiers more about the damage to the country and it's citizens caused by the taliban when they had their way.

And that it is the taliban, by acting for Pakistan, that were the ones allied and tools of an alien invader first. And the Nato forces came to help them repell the foriegn invaders and their tools.

I hope the muslim command is actually doing that. It would be a subtle thing to craft such counter propoganda in a way that its result wouldnt't be counter to it's intent if they use islam in the propoganda.

And if our enemies *are* many of those in the Afghan army? What then?

Truthiocity, I've read enough of your posts to know that you often want to think the best. That can be lovely at times—but, with all due respect, it can also be dangerously naive.

What makes you think many Muslim soldiers are "absorb[ing] the values, goals and world view of the western troops"? When asked, most Afghan police and troops seem more attracted by the paycheck and the power of the uniform than anything else. I'm sure some few come to share some of the values of their Western trainers, but it seems pretty rare.

In addition, all too many Afghans already see NATO as "alien invader" rather than ally, since they are virtually all Kufr.

As for switching sides, that is something Muslims in general, and Afghans in particular, do on a regular basis. Many switched back and forth between the warlords of the "Northern Alliance" and the Taliban, and as many now regularly switch allegiance between "allied forces" and the Taliban, depending on which side is offering them a better deal at any given time.

"O Allah's Apostle! Would you like that I kill him?" The Prophet said, "Yes," Muhammad bin Maslama said, "Then allow me to say a (false) thing (i.e. to deceive Kab). "The Prophet said, "You may say it."

"Unfortunately the best policy is to ignore these kinds of attacks."

Try telling that to the families of those soldiers who were murdered by people they were trying to help.

Unfortunately, the best policy is to ignore Afghanistan. Let the people of that country fight their own battles. If they're invaded, wish them the best of luck. There's nothing more we can do. Attacks like this prove one thing: no one can help people who don't want to be helped.

Hi. _ You speak of Afghan troops and NATO coalition troops, serving in the same units, mixing with each other, to the effect the Afghanis would learn Western ways of thinking. I've never been to Afghanistan, but I'm sure there's no mixing going on. And even if there was, I think the Muslim religion, even though very false, is strongly held by most Muslim men. There are Muslims here in the US working in places, at businesses, in company with non-muslims, and you will find the Muslims will not mix. There's no way to force them to get friendly, even if they work side by side literally rubbing elbows. It really is a basic tenet of their religion not to mix, and they obey it strictly. I'm speaking from personal experience. Non-mixing is not just some esoteric suggestion for Muslims. It's a central, core belief, practice of theirs. They are literally at war (in their minds) with us, wherever they are

There is a simple way to distinguish a peaceful Muslim from a Jihadist. Call them a "moderate" and see how they react.

The article did not make note of it (that I saw, at any rate), but surely the Afghani was yelling 'Alla hu Akbar' until he was taken down.

What's up with that?

I was just reading about this article this morning in the paper the sunday mail,it's quite amazing at what they fail to mention they said a man in an afghan uniform opened fire on german troops, nothing about the deception or the root cause of why he did this, he somehow must have got hold of the uniform and used his prowess to enter the camp before engaging his targets,he couldn't possibly have been smiling at his enemies while cursing with his heart now could he,any shocking news from the islamic world is dumbed down to politically correct propaganda levels in australian papers and blogs

Dangerously naive? I fail to see how looking beyond the reaction the enemy wants us to have in order to figure out the purpose of this tactic is naive. Esepecially when an attack is so obviously an attack against morale and intended to foment division between allies, drive out Nato and stop the training of Afgan soldiers.

The reactions of "We shouldn't be there" "none of them can be trusted" is one of the exact reasons they do this sort of thing. They want western soldiers to not trust Afgani soldiers. They want Afgani soldiers to feel that they aren't trusted and become resentful so the enemy can convert them to their cause. They want Nato to stop training a soldiery that will then use that training to create an army that can stand against them.

And more than anything they want westerners to want NATO out of Afganistan so they can claim victory and take over the country again. The jihadists will be further emboldened and there will be even worse carnage then there is now, if that is even possible.

Splitting is a common strategy Islamic Supremicists have used against muslims living in the west to drive them apart from the native populations and against all manner of political entities in order to nutralize opposition to their agenda. Why would they not do it against military opponents as well?

I think both Truthiocity and gravenimage have a point. Switching sides is common, from leader to soldier and at the same time the jihadist strategy appears to be "separating" foreigners and members of the afghan army. A masterfully designed strategy, tricky to counter.

When working with MUslims, keep them in front of you and in clear view.....You just never know when they will decide to become pious Muslims....

The global jihad has used Iraq and Afghanistan to weaken and pick off our troops (and those aligned with us) for ten years. This is how they will finish the job. Our troops teach them, then they turn on our troops in the last hour and kill as many as they can. When they then destroy a major city in the U.S., Obama will rationalize that we do not have enough troops to defend ourselves and sign a dhimmi contract with the Muslim Brotherhood.

We should let these two "democratic" countries recruit and train their own military and police and criminalize the jihadists (of course, jihad is not illegal under Sharia law). They have had enough time to do so if they were in good faith about it.

The enemy has many goals. Don't we have a right to expect the people of Afghanistan to fight the enemy, even if is a fellow Afghan? Where is Afghan outrage against this attack on an "ally"? Clearly, we are not allies. Is our commitment supposed to be open-ended while they play us against one another? They've chosen a government guided by Islam. That means they will never go against a fellow Muslim who attacks the West.

At what point are we allowed to say: we tried. You wouldn't work with us to defeat our common enemy. We are taking our people and leaving you to fight your own battle. If you want to be free, then you are going to have to make the sacrifices. You are a sovereign nation. Sovereignty begets responsibility. If you are not willing to fight for yourselves then we can't help you. Have a nice life.

Maybe it means the enemy won. Maybe it also means the people of Afghanistan are getting what they want. Let the tribes battle one another. Who are we to pick winnners and losers? Let them have Islam. They deserve it.

I do believe their first loyalty is tribal in nature... Money may top that though. It does in most cultures.

"I fail to see how looking beyond the reaction the enemy wants us to have in order to figure out the purpose of this tactic is naive. Esepecially when an attack is so obviously an attack against morale and intended to foment division between allies, drive out Nato and stop the training of Afgan soldiers."

I don't find it to be all that obvious though it may become so. It could be that one good muslim saw the opportunity to carry out the attack his imam suggested and the result of the attack causes distrust.
But as to whether or not that was the plan...?
How thoroughly were those in command able to examine this mans past? Probably not all that well. Just not practical if you want numbers. As a result we get the occasional "misunderstander" that does as his religion and his religious leaders tell him. And that right there is the problem. islam.
If you invite someone in to your camp, whose religion is all about killing or subjugating you...I'll bet the Commanders in the field have all kinds of suggestions, plans to prevent such attacks that are not PC, that won't pass the test with the present administration and their insane view that islam is THE religion of Peace.
I see exactly what you're saying and some way must be found to hand over control. Having heavily armed potential killers in ones midst may not be the best way to go about it.
It's quite possible to reduce the risk and still do the training. I would just love to see the guys in the field laying down the law on security instead of the guys that push pencils and agendas.

Ice or water it's H2O. Moderate or radical they're both muslim. It doesn't take much for either to change.

Truthiocity, I *am not* trying to give you a hard time.

I'm just concerned that our continued "partnering" with Afghan police and troops is just going to result in more earnest dead Westerners, without any gain for us at all...

...and that all too many Afghans will consider such continued efforts not as signs of our dedication, but of our foolishness.

AlaskanInfidel and both make solid points.

AlaskanInfidel

"But as to whether or not that was the plan...?"

Absolutely that was the plan. They knew there was little chance the guy would have survived such an attack. They could have killed the soldiers with a bomb and not lost a jihadi, or chose other soldiers to kill. But instead of a bomb they chose this method and this target.

There is no way he just went berzerkoid out of the blue. These guys don't come to these decisions on their own. The fort hood shooter acted alone but was in contact with a now notorious priest shortly beforehand and the times square guy had assistance as well.

The enemy does not want afgani soldiers trained by Nato in how to fight them better. The afgan army will have better training than the taliban AND won't adhere to the various rules of engagment that Nato troops must.

They also don't want afgans in close contact with westerners, and especially not looking up to them.

One of the real reasons those people hate us is because they believe westerners and paticularly America infected muslims with western impure decadence of casual dating and women wearing pants. They believe if islam is to be pure america in particular must be destroyed, prevented from influencing the world or made muslim.

They absoulutely do not want muslims mixing with westerners, learning to like them and accepting their impure ways.

gravenimage I thought overnight about my statemnt and there are just as good reasons for me to have suggested the extreme opposite. Namely that the hunkering down in order to show the enemy that we won't be moved contributes to the hemoraging of wealth and manpower that they also want us to suffer.

However a benifit of the training is that eventually there should be enough afgans trained by Nato to be able to train others and we won't be needed.

An upleasant upside of this incident is that it might indicate that the taliban has to resort to this kind of trickery because they cannot field the numbers of fighters they've previously been able to.

I don't think afgans would see our steadfastness as foolighness. If they had the ability to distinguish resolve from foolishness that country would be in better shape than it is. But if we leave before we should our allies there will see it as a betrayal (yah I know "what have you done for me lately") and abandonment and the enemy would see it as a victory. As they would claim no matter what it must be seen by the world that they were crushed or that we left behind a force that could stand against them.

Personally I will never consider it a success because we did not salt the poppie fields or put a stop to those disgusting pedo-pimps.
