Spencer on Egypt: Is democracy really in the offing?

Egyptdemocracy.jpg

In "Democracy is a Relative Term," in Human Events this morning, I discuss the implications of the strange fact that both Tony Blair and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are excited about developments in Egypt:

Everyone is excited about the toppling of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt. "This is a moment of huge opportunity," enthused one noted analyst. Another agreed: "We will soon see a new Middle East materializing." The two analysts in question are Tony Blair and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad--and that sums up the reigning confusion about what exactly has happened in Egypt, and what is likely to happen next.

Blair opined that "this is a moment of huge opportunity, not just for Egypt," but for the entire Middle East. "Despite all those challenges," Blair added, "this is a moment when the whole of the Middle East could pivot and face towards change and modernization and democracy."

Maybe. Ahmadinejad, however, is envisioning a wholly different scenario. He predicted that "we will soon see a new Middle East materializing without America and the Zionist regime, and there will be no room for world arrogance [that is, the West] in it."

So who's right? Will Egypt become a Western-style pluralistic democracy, with equal rights for women, as well as for its sizable and embattled Christian minority? Or was Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Ahmad Mersi correct when he declared that the Egyptian people want the rule of Islamic law?...

There is more.

I'm sure Egypt would like to move to a far more open and free society without baring their soul.

Islam will still be the dominant religion and this will be reflected in all aspects of life - to suspect anything else will be folly - but the move to freedom is irreservable - and how far it goes depends on America non interference - their vile support anyone who is willinig to push their agenda using strong arm tactis.

I hope and pray that the time for this short term gain is over - and actually that America is bigger & better than this childish behaviour.

If Egypt flourishes with freedom this may profoundly change their relationship with Israel - and America's relationship with Israel.

America will not need to be close to Israel any longer - times will change and one day Israel will find themselves not so powerful and will become vulnerable and will become the hunted instead of the hunter.

With no friends in the neighborhood they could be reduced to begging for forgiveness and will resort to begging the Mideast neighbors to show mercy even though they never showed an ounce of mercy themselves.

In my opinion, the only way Israel can survive for a long time is to make friends with their neighbors and forget about America as their influence will recede remarkably.

Fox News, Glenn Beck show, go to Feb 14

http://www.watchglennbeck.com/

One particularly interesting point in the Beck show, which begins on the theme of Egypt, is that American security may be in danger of being infiltrated by certain Islamic groups which have a concealed hostile intent (a point made on 'Jihadwatch' more than once).

Mubarak was the lesser of two evils. That is always the choice when it comes to Islam.

To The Egyptian People
The Pillars of Success: Buildable if not for “but….”

I have watched the demonstrators and heard them scream, and listened to reporters and experts for the last 18 days. I have heard the screams for democracy, freedom, human rights, and the screams demanding relief from poverty, unemployment, and inflation. I saw wild-eyed screaming women in Muslim headgear and shook my head. I have not been moved in the least.

Your revolution has come from below---a real grassroots and organic movement. Now comes the hard work and I am pessimistic because of “but…”

Democracy, human rights, and freedom:
The place to start is not only at the top, but more importantly, at the bottom, that is, in your households with the role, status, and treatment of women and girls. Charity begins in the home. Human rights also begin in home. Your screams for freedom and human rights are a sham for you will never give them to the fairer sex. Egyptians, you may agree with me, but then you will say “but….”.
You oppress and murder Christians. You might admit this, decry it, and then say “but….”.
Your constitution will be partly rewritten. What it makes of Egypt is not what will be added and/or changed but what is not deleted, that is, reference(s) to the special status of Islam and Muslims. But again Egyptians, you will say, “but….”.

Poverty, Unemployment, and Inflation.
The Chinese, when facing similar problems, instituted the one child policy. 50% of Egyptians are under the age of 30 and large families seem to be the norm. No reforms can handle that challenge and so, poverty and unemployment will persist. You may nod your head and concede that perhaps I am right, “but….”.
If we experience a couple of years of world-wide poor harvests, you will be in the streets demonstrating for hunger relief. Unless you can establish a world wide caliphate to parasitize the dhimmi west, famine is written into your destiny.
Your population exceeds the productive capacity of Egypt. You will probably agree, “but….”.

What is this “but…”? It is this: “But we proudly wear the millstone of Islam around our individual and collective necks, so we will not change, for Islam is more important to us than life itself.”

Ergo, the problem is Islam itself which is at war with humanity and reality.

Much as I took issue with those who said that Egyptian protesters should be mowed down because Mubarak is lesser evil than Islamic "democracy", I too believe that free elections in Egypt, as in any other Muslim country will throw up an Islamist government.

The question remains - what should the free world do about it. Like I have said on these fora many times, there is no choice but to let them choose Islamism and then let them stew in their jihadist juices like Iranians.

While Mubarak type dictators keep things in check for the moment, that model of "managing" peoples is not sustainable. Better to allow things to move and a resolution will emerge.

Sanjay

The Muslim Brotherhood may only have 20% of the population, but they have the support of 80% of the population.

Only 20% of Egyptians (including the 10% Christian Copts) understand and support Western-style democracy.

Dear robert i live in Egypt and i wish for a western democrasy as in America,The problem not all egyptians hold western values like me.

I will have to wait till the elections to vote.

Democracy is a Greek word. Now at one time, Egypt was governed by both the Greeks (Alexander's successors) and the Romans. However, any humanistic impulses that the Egyptians had remain only in the Coptic population (the only descendants of Egypt's past glories).

Islam swept all this away and whatever democratic traditions the population may have had disappeared in the genocide of Islamic jihad. When the current Muslims use the word "democracy", they are using it as a magic token, hoping that it will allow them to use the Western success model without understanding how it works.

Islam is not going away. Any closed system like Islam (which mandates death for apostates) has to come to point where change has to occur or the society it feeds on will suffer a crash landing. There has to be a crisis point which limits all other options.

Has Egypt reached that point? I doubt it.

You're right, I'm genuinely sorry to say.

The problem is that Egypt has no Demos.
Only an Umma.

Therein lies the rub.

"And in Egypt, Larijani said, “Muslims are more active in political agitation and, God willing, they will establish the regime that they want.”

The regime they want, by all indications, is an Islamic one." -- headline

Well, there you have it ...I am certain that the Egyptian people will get what they want: an islamic regime. And I also think that this islamic regime will make Mubarak look like a pussycat.

The first elections after Mubarak will also be the last elections because as soon as the first free parliament is sworn in it will be quickly dissolved and replaced by the Mullahs.

Then it's goodbye to Democracy, Copts, Shias, anyone who isn't hidden behind a beard or under a blue burqua.

Your kind are the epitome of evil of our time. Disgusting little petty creatures whose heart is filled with nothing but hatred, lies and fantasies of murderous "revenge" for having "lost" less than 0.2% of the "patrimony" you were not entitled to in the first place - and that's if you're a Muslim ARAB. If you're talking as a Muslim and not as an Arab then the Jewish ancestral land regained by the Jews makes such an infinitesimal part of the Mulsim conquests it isn't even worth calculating. Yet a billion and a half Muslims are so obsessed with the "humilliation" you will sacrfice generation after genration and thousands, if not millions, of lives and incalculable amount of oil money for bribery and propaganda just to try and erase that tiny "blemish" on Arab "purity" and Muslim "purity" of the Middle East. That's just how petty, supremacist and evil you are.

The Egyptian Muslims will make of Egypt the only thing they know how to make. Only when hateful fanatical supremacist delusional people like you will develop some humanity in your hearts, only when destructive genocidal hatred is replaced with constructive ideals, will the Middle East become the prosperous and peaceful place its so longs to be. You are your own worst enemies and the sooner you will understand that the less self-made misery you will condemn yourselves to.

"Sweetness" to you too.

I'm not sure whether you're a wingnut lefty or simply a few bricks short of a load. You say Israel should "make friends" with its islamic neighbors; the only way it could do so would be to renounce freedom of religion, equality of the sexes, academic freedom, impartial jurisprudence, freedom of the press and tolerance of alternative lifestyles such as homosexuality and monastacism. Which of the preceding would you be willing to give up?
People like you really get my goat; you live in free and tolerant societies, and are always the first in line to whine about some trivial perceived failure of the state to care for you from the cradle to the grave or indulge your often bizarre and macabre lifestyles, while at the same time fomenting against the very institutions which preserve your right to do so.
This may surprise you, but try to get your head around it; ISLAM IS EVIL! It oppresses women, prohibits freedom of religion and imposes primitive, brutal and bloodthirsty punishments upon all who fall afoul of its restrictive tenets. Do you like to have a beer? - 30 lashes. Did you ever swipe a candy bar when you were a kid? - Off comes your hand. Do you have a little sister? - At age six her clitoris would be excised. Was your older sister raped? -
hanged or stoned to death for having had illicit sex. if you're a homosexual, don't expect to see 30.
I'm willing to bet that you've never studied mein koranf or the hadiths, and for that reason have absolutely no understanding of islam's primary purpose, which is to wipe the kufr from the face of the earth in order to impose the world caliphate.
Wake up!

On the contrary, Israel has shown remarkable resilience and self control surrounded by hostile neighbours committed to her destruction, denying her right to exist. Your writing betrays your own arrogance in claiming the assumed right to once again subjugate religious minority. I believe you are on the wrong side of justice.

I am with you. We need our own moral clarity and stand by the "right" side.
