Obama asks Saudis to send weapons to Libyan rebels

The question of whether or not any of them are Islamic jihadists doesn't seem to preoccupy anyone. "America's secret plan to arm Libya's rebels: Obama asks Saudis to airlift weapons into Benghazi," by Robert Fisk for the Independent, March 7:

Desperate to avoid US military involvement in Libya in the event of a prolonged struggle between the Gaddafi regime and its opponents, the Americans have asked Saudi Arabia if it can supply weapons to the rebels in Benghazi. The Saudi Kingdom, already facing a "day of rage" from its 10 per cent Shia Muslim community on Friday, with a ban on all demonstrations, has so far failed to respond to Washington's highly classified request, although King Abdullah personally loathes the Libyan leader, who tried to assassinate him just over a year ago.

Washington's request is in line with other US military co-operation with the Saudis. The royal family in Jeddah, which was deeply involved in the Contra scandal during the Reagan administration, gave immediate support to American efforts to arm guerrillas fighting the Soviet army in Afghanistan in 1980 and later – to America's chagrin – also funded and armed the Taliban.

But the Saudis remain the only US Arab ally strategically placed and capable of furnishing weapons to the guerrillas of Libya. Their assistance would allow Washington to disclaim any military involvement in the supply chain – even though the arms would be American and paid for by the Saudis.

The Saudis have been told that opponents of Gaddafi need anti-tank rockets and mortars as a first priority to hold off attacks by Gaddafi's armour, and ground-to-air missiles to shoot down his fighter-bombers.

Supplies could reach Benghazi within 48 hours but they would need to be delivered to air bases in Libya or to Benghazi airport. If the guerrillas can then go on to the offensive and assault Gaddafi's strongholds in western Libya, the political pressure on America and Nato – not least from Republican members of Congress – to establish a no-fly zone would be reduced....

"and ground-to-air missiles to shoot down his fighter-bombers"...

yeah, what could go wrong with that?

"America's secret plan to arm Libya's rebels..."

"...Washington's highly classified request..."

Well, so much for secrecy. Shades of Iran-Contra scandal.

"Get out of the way and let them kill each other.

Any US involvement can only be a losing proposition for the US....."

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That is why when people begin talking about genocide and other things, I am reluctant to join the chorus, not knowing what is being fought. What Gaddafi is fighting could be worse than Gaddafi, if that is possible.

US involvement or Obama's involvement? I understand Obama is 'the' (democratically elected) president of the United States but he is not my president. I consider him a foreign presence. History will judge this man harshly. I am astonished at his high polling numbers. Americans genuinely like the man. This bodes ill for America's long term future in my opinion.

The only long term solution is for the non-Muslim world to press Islam towards reformation of Islamic theology.

In other words, a world where there is no Islam at all (i.e., no Moslems). Kinda like secular humanism, where they don't even have a godhead or a book, much less a church.

*** 33:21***

You take the murder and world takeover outta the Ko-Ran, and you have front and back book covers with no pages in between.

Worse, you'd still be stuck with a billion persons inculcated with violent piety and the promise of something-for-nothing in the form of Jizyah, women-as-property and war booty. They're gonna suddenly embrace secular humanism?

Reformation is not even an option. The final solution will be much, much messier than that.

To keep things in balance, I bet Obummer is also asking Gaddafi to send weapons to overthrow the Saudi government at the same time! Knock-off two non-radical-muslim governments at once!

/sarc (is it really needed?)

On the serious side, does Obama not think the Saudis don't see their own future in this request? Who will Obama have send weapons to bring them down? "Feckless" is the term that immediately comes to mind when reading this article. (Well, earthier terms actually preceded "feckless.")

Everybody prefaces comments on Prez Obama with "he's really smart, but..."

This guy isn't smart at all, he's reading from a manual, much like an accountant from the FASB code or a lawyer from the legal code. He's not smart, he's not even a particularly good instruction follower.

Worse, there is nothing codified for modernity, there is no how-to step-by-step manual telling poor Prez Obama, not the brightest bulb in the chandelier in the first lace, how to meld Islam with modern civilization.

He seems to be some kind of twisted admixture of Chicago-style machine politics and Marxian process.

Thus we are faced today with an American president procuring arms for Moslems who only months ago gave a rock star welcome to a mass murderer of a plane full of Pan Am passengers, most of them Americans.

"The Saudis have been told that opponents of Gaddafi need anti-tank rockets and mortars as a first priority to hold off attacks by Gaddafi's armour, and ground-to-air missiles to shoot down his fighter-bombers."

hmmmm, what are the odds that those weapons along with the already captured weapons would soon start showing up in Gaza or Mosul?...

"Washington's request is in line with other US military co-operation with the Saudis. The royal family in Jeddah, which was deeply involved in the Contra scandal during the Reagan administration, gave immediate support to American efforts to arm guerrillas fighting the Soviet army in Afghanistan in 1980 and later – to America's chagrin – also funded and armed the Taliban".

We have supplied rebel fighters in the past and wound up fighting those same rebels as time past.

Does the United States have any clue who is the real enemy in the middle-east and who isn't the enemy.? Just because a group is trying to over-through their government or leader. Doesn't mean the rebels are any better than the old ruling govenment.

The U.S. better figure this out before they continue trying to police the world.

Saudis helping other Muslims? It's never been done before...................I'm sure they would build a nice mosque once victory is assured.

1) Nobody in Tripoli is our friend. All we could do is choose lesser enemies.
2) There is nothing that would "disable" those arms if applied against oh say their direct benefactors the Saudi Arabians or (gasp) ourselves as well.
3) We should not be the friend of "democracy" everywhere. That leads to gross distortions such as "democracy once, autocracy ever after". Methinks we should limit our help and "buddy-dom" to Christian secular democracies that emphasize a rule of man made laws for secular life that override religious laws without intruding into the religious arena.
4) Gaddafi duck is more our friend than the Libyan street, which will amount to the Muslim Brotherhood if it doesn't already.
5) We are well positioned for 4. (Heh, Col, we said you had to go to give you some anti-US chops. So you can quietly keep the flow of oil on, right?) (This might be ONE thing that stopped clock in the White House got right by assident. (sic))

{^_^}

But the Saudis would BUY those weapons from America, MILLIONS of dollars worth. War is big business!

Osama bin Laden and Aghanistan 1980's just called. On line 2 for Obama. Requesting aid to fight the Soviets.

So Obama wants the Saudis to supply arms to the Libyan rebels? Well, it's not a bad idea, but only if we can get somebody else -- say, the Iranian ayatollahs -- to supply arms to Gaddafy. Then the next step is to encourage other Moslem countries to send volunteer fighters to both sides.

It is wrong for the U.S. to ask saudis to provide weapons and even if they tell it is unwise such news spread at this inappropriate time. It is more of an arab as well as that of europe's worry. Unless people suffer they will not understand that foreign forces are landing in to help them out. Let U.S. remember that during the first year of Iraqi occupation there was no problem. The violence started only after the superiority feeling of the Americans and their arrogance on the street. How many times we saw U.S. soldiers asking the common citizens raise their hands or handcuffing them in public? Such indifference is ultimate insult in asian countries. They are paying for that in Iraq. In Afghanistan, they refuse to destroy drug plants. In Pak, they let their army do any crime in foreign countries (mainly in India) as long as their interest is not disturbed. Why the Americans do not realise that if pakistani army criminals control their society neither Pakistan will find peace nor afghanistan will find a solution?

Let America interfere in Libyan affairs once the suffering becomes acute for Libyans. Let them choose arab administrators known for their intergrity. Inspite of himalayan corruption, India still has many experienced, retired civil servants of british model known for their honesty. Or even from Britain. Let them guide the Libyans and the U.S. should remain in the back ground. Annnunce in the first week itself about the departure schedule of foreign forces and time table for elections. U.S. will be hailed.

FLASHBACK 2004: Kaddafi plotted to kill Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah

A federal judge sentenced Muslim activist Abdurahman Alamoudi to the maximum 23-year prison term for illegal dealings with Libya that included his involvement in a complex plot to kill the Saudi ruler.
Kaddafi’s blood debt to the Saudi royal family is long overdue. The Obamateur should encouraged them to collect in full.

Step 1: Greenlight the $audis to put a bounty on Q’s head.

Step 2: Watch Q’s mercs climb over each other to mount Q’s head on a pike.

Step 3: Light Cohiba and enjoy lower gas prices.

only if you had a brain and actually read news reports, you'd know that the Iranian government condemned Qaddafi for his crackdown, as did hezbollah, hamas, and virtually every other governemnt in the middle east.

only hugo chavez and fidel castrao are supporting qaddafi

**[Bronx Cheer]**

C'mon, Barry, we don't have a dog in this fight.

What all non-Muslim governments should do about this (but especially, free western countries).

Extract, if possible, and as quickly as possible, any of their own *non-Muslim* citizens who got caught in Libya when the volcano erupted, and are now trying to flee or have fled to the borders.

Perhaps, assist non-Muslim expats from poorer countries to get back to said countries.

Tell the OIC that it's the job of Muslims to take care of all Muslim 'refugees' - whether Libyan Muslim, or Muslims of other varieties - who flee from Libya. Non-Muslims should do NOTHING whatever to assist Muslims fleeing Libya. They can go to their brethren in the rest of the Ummah for help.

NO Libyan Muslim 'refugees' or 'asylum seekers' should be permitted into any non-Muslim country: period. If they try to enter illegally, turn them back by military force if necessary (Spain, Malta and Italy could probably use some help with this at the moment).

Offer neither arms nor 'aid'.

Leave Libya to stew in its own juice.

And when do we get off the oil ~ we have to wait until a few people make a little bit more money off it ~ its excess to the max!!

We have to play the ~ we don't have the technology game!!

The whole dictatorship argument is falling apart ~ do Muslims want rights ~ or do they just want food ~ and a steady job. Dictatorships are made where there is an acceptance that rights should not be respected ~ the perfect crucible is the Islamic world.

If they want bread ~ give them bread ~ but not guns ~ because that could easily spread to Southern Europe. And lead to years of war in the making!! Jihadist war ~ the war to finish what was started ~ and try to take over Europe ~ for Islam.

OMG!!

.............................

Iran "condemning Qaddafi for his crackdown" is certainly the pot calling the kettle black, considering how Iran has treated its own protesters, going back to the summer of 2009—with imprisonment, torture, religiously-sanctioned *prison rape*, and outright murder.

I like the idea that "Horse" considers Hezbollah to be a "government", as well. With "governments" like that...
