Steven Emerson: Muslim groups like CAIR, ISNA, and MAS, not Rep. King, are responsible for fomenting hysteria

Emerson observes: “The real underlying story here is how the self-anointed leadership of the Muslim community … are the ones responsible for instilling panic into the Muslim community by suggesting that these hearings will lead to ‘hate crimes’ against Muslims.”

That has indeed become the preferred tactic in recent years: deflecting attention by appropriating victim status from actual or intended victims of jihadist terrorism, and attempting to silence the discussion by acting as though any portrayal of Islam in even a potentially negative light amounts to inciting hate crimes.

There is one small cause for optimism: the prospect that groups like CAIR have shown themselves to be so paranoid and obnoxious in their denunciation of King’s hearings, that more people are noticing, and wondering if perhaps they doth protest too much.

“Muslim American groups, not Rep. Pete King, are the ones fomenting hysteria with hearings on tap,” by Steven Emerson for the New York Daily News, March 10:

Never in my entire career in Washington have I encountered the hype and scare tactics of those opposing the hearings into Islamic radicalization by Rep. Pete King. A classic example was a headline on MSNBC.com: “Inquiry by congressional committee looks like inquisition to many Muslims.”

“Witch hunt” and “McCarthyism” have also popped up.

The line of attack is now familiar: If King (R-L.I.) were truly interested in violent extremism, his hearings would focus on a wide range of groups that wreak havoc on America, including neo-Nazis and others; by focusing solely on Muslim extremism, the argument goes, he is betraying his bias.

This is utterly ridiculous. Our organization, the Investigative Project on Terrorism, recently did an analysis of all terrorism convictions based on statistics released by the Justice Department. These stats show that more than 80% of all convictions tied to international terrorist groups and homegrown terrorism since 9/11 involve defendants driven by a radical Islamist agenda. Though Muslims represent less than 1% of the American population, they constitute defendants in 186 of the 228 cases the Justice Department lists.

The figures confirm that there is a disproportionate problem of Islamic militancy and terrorism among the American Muslim population.

This is not to say that, on a percentage basis, American Muslims tend to be violent or extremist. To the contrary. Those involved in terrorism are a tiny sliver of the overall Muslim American population.

But one ought to be able to focus on a very real problem – homegrown terrorism fueled by Muslim extremism – without being accused of painting the entire U.S. Muslim population with a broad brush.

The real underlying story here is how the self-anointed leadership of the Muslim community – groups like the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Islamic Society of North America and the Muslim American Society – are the ones responsible for instilling panic into the Muslim community by suggesting that these hearings will lead to “hate crimes” against Muslims.

That canard has been used by these groups for years in their attempts to intimidate the media, commentators and critics of radical Islam from truly analyzing the role of these groups and others in radicalizing their constituents in the American Muslim community. The documents showing the creation of these groups with the assistance of the Muslim Brotherhood were introduced into evidence in the trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development several years ago. At the trial, the Council on American-Islamic Relations was described by an FBI expert as a front for Hamas, and was also listed, together with the Islamic Society of North America, as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation indictments.

Groups such as these routinely play the “Islamophobia” card, and get attention for doing so in the mainstream media, in order to silence criticism of Islamic radicalism. In fact, these very same groups, just like the Obama administration, categorically refuse to even use the term “radical Islam” in order to excise the term from the American vernacular.

Critics have taken issue with King’s focus on one religious minority. But, in fact, in previous years, Congress has held numerous hearings into various ethnic subcultures that have spawned illegalities – including the Italian mob, Hispanic drug cartels, black and white prison gangs, white racists and neo-Nazis.

Headlines about King producing “panic” in the rank-and-file Muslim community are nonsense. The only panic is that being strategically fomented by groups with an interest in spreading fear. They, together with their mainstream media friends, have falsely alleged that: one, there is a war against Islam by the United States, and two, the FBI is secretly instigating Islamic terrorism by use of informants.

These are dangerous fictions.

If you observe Arab Muslim communities, you will find that controversy and hysteria seem to be the order of the day. It appears that’s how they function: One row and/or crisis after another. The psychopathology here is thick – and highly depressing. As Ellison’s “Crybaby Jihad” demonstrates, Muslim fanatics are the biggest drama queens on the planet – that’s what Islam does to you!

I am glad somebody is speaking out about the MANIPULATION.Only a dummy would fall for it.I can’t blieve the media doesn’t say anything about CAIR’s terrorist ties. They make me puke,I am sure there is money involved.

The best way to combat their manipulation is to spread information about what Islamic history really is.The media wont do it,the wont talk of the 500,000 or even 1 milion children stolen for 300 years by the Muslims in the Ottoman Empire to force them to become Muslims and soldiers, called janissaries.

I think it’s important to tally the number of Americans killed and injured by jihad attacks in US territory since 1990. Plus add the potential number of casualities had the jihadists NOT been stopped ie shoe bomber, underwear bomber, Seattle new years eve bomber, New york times square bomber etc! I’m sure the number could be close to 10000! Plus the threats of dirty nuclear devices smuggled into the US across the Canadian or Mexican borders.

I was able to catch some of the hearings on Fox. Interesting. Dr. Zuhdi Jasser was the most eloquent spokesman but by means no more interesting than Abdirizak Bihi and Melvin Bledsoe, who both had personal and compelling stories to tell. Jasser makes a fundamental error in my view when he tries to separate “political Islam” from what he considers authentic (non-political) Islam. Jasser acknowledges that (like Moses / unlike Jesus) “Muhammad was a head of state.” Like the Jewish faith (based on the law of Moses) Islam IS indeed politicalfrom its inception. It cannot be anything but political.

A friend of mine was a cop in the Rochester Police Dept (NY), where I lived at the time of the 9/11 attacks. He told me in confidence that when NYC locked down the city for weeks after the attacks, they had stopped a number of followup attacks. There were several Muslims who attempted to drive vans into the city packed with explosives to do followup attacks. These are the same Muslims that CAIR and other civil rights groups claim had their rights violated. Most are part of the 1,000’s detained shortly after 9/11.

Also there was evidence as you said that the lockdown of Airspace after the attacks were known to have prevented at least one or two other hijackings. I remember reading stories where the airplanes were inspected after the attacks and at least one they found box cutters on them. I don’t remember the details since that was 9 years ago.

I have the King hearings on TV rat now. They are off to a great start:

    – An Afro-American rep from NC cautioned we should speak carefully to avoid putting our tropps in Afghan and Iraq in danger.

    – He also pointed on the infamous Southern Poverty Law Center study documenting that there are over 1,000 right wing extremist groups active in America (read: white Christians) motivated by all the illegal aliens in the country, and that they present us a clear and present danger.

    – Rep Dingell of Michigan cautioned that the committee should be wary of insulting Arabs, Moslems, and other minority group. He said we shouldn’t incite or inflame based on race.

    – Rep Keith Ellison D-MN (the first Moslem on Capitol Hill) praised his efforts in assisting in studying Moslems and understanding them, and announced he plans to introduce legislation soon to foster a greater understanding of Moslems.

    *** 2:216 ***

Are they gonna dig into the Ko-Ran, Hah-Deaths and Sear-Rah? Is this where tough-minded Rep King is gonna take these hearings?

  13. says

I watched the entire 4Hours& 15Min. of the King hearings and I think Peter King and the Republicans bent over in a collective effort to not demonize the entire Muslim community as a whole.

Clearly the leftwing Democrats serving on King’s committee chose to demonize his hearings no matter how moving the powerful testimony was from a Somali Muslim who lost his son in Somali after being radicalized ironically at a mosque that the Minneapolis Somali community at first supported, and a man whose son was radicalized to the point were he murdered a military recruiter outside his office.

I understand sheriff’s Baca’s approach as a law enforcement officer of the biggest Sheriffs dept. in the country. I was however dismayed after all the knowledge that is out there that Baca stated he was unaware of CAIR being an unindicted co-conspirator with Hamas in the Holyland Foundation case in Texas.

For some reason the liberal left choir kept asking why the KKK,skin heads,or other radical groups in America were not included in this hearing. Again this was clearly an orchestrated political agenda. They knew for months what the focus was in Rep. King’s hearing without question.

Any of these Democrats certainly have the right to form their own hearings on those other radical groups if they choose to. So the question is why haven’t they? But instead they chose to demonize Rep. King’s efforts to have an open discussion on Islamic radicalism in America.

Dem. Rep. Jackie Speiers had the gall to ask what right the witnesses had to be there and what made them experts on Islam.
I believe it was Dr. Zuhdi Jasser who is a devout Sunni Muslim who practices Islam but fights to keep sharia out of it shot back and asked her what expertise she had in regards to Islam herself

The 4hour King hearings are being repeated again right now on C-Span 3

Muslims will rely on any columny in jihad in the cause of Allah, of that there can be no doubt.

For a Muslim, Western culture [e.g. digital watches, CT Scans, cell phones] are a calamity to the Ummah. Islamic leaders from the very first years of Islamic history [c. 36AH] were prone to violence against the unbelievers. For example, al-Tabari records a correspondence from Ali to the people of Egypt [History of al-Tabari XVII, 3394]in which he reminded Muslims that he was ‘harder on unbelievers than the burning of the fire’.

In the correspondence between Ali and Abu Bakr, Ali goes on to urge the Muslims to be ‘steadfast and get ready for warfare’ [op. cit. 3395]. Abu Bakr made it clear in his response that any manifestation of opposition against Islam would result in the Ummah withdrawing its security.

    But, Islam means peace.

  15. says

Rep Keith D-MN (first Moslem congressman) just broke into tears while relating a heart rending story about a young Moslem who sacrificed his life as a brave American.

He babbled about Cedar Rapids IA some, and then went on to note that Moslems have helped build America since its founding, and stated that “Moslems are us” and “… serve America as doctors, lawyers, cab drivers and even members of Congress.”

But his crying jab over the 9/11 hero Moslem, that made my Adam’s apple bounce a bit. Call me a cynic, but I think he was showing the fallen hero, and all American Moslems, to be misunderstood victims.

    Way to go, Pete.

  16. says

All the Muslim stories projected by the Democrats at the King Hearing simply obscured the main issue in the King hearings, which was radicalization of Muslims in America. No one was demonizing Muslims as a whole but that didn’t seem to stop the Democrats from continuously obfuscating the serious issue at hand.

It is interesting to note that former Democrat Rep.Jane Harmon had a very similar hearing 4 years ago on jailed prisoners being radicalized by Muslim imans, but for some reason not a peep or a protest on that from either side of the aisle.

I think there is actually an upside to all the negative exposure given to the King hearing–more people watched it then normally would have because of all the negative media exposure.

Zuhdi Jasser — the new, more sophisto, more charming, Hoop — just called out for a more civilized disource between American Infidels and Moslems. He then talked a bit about the “beautiful religion of Islam.”

Dick Morris wrote: “The vast, vast, vast majority of Muslims are opposed to terror and happily and loyally enjoy the benefits of living in the greatest nation on Earth….”

This is a very foolish statement on Morris’ part, especially as a Jew. I think Morris is also Jewish. That the vast majority of Muslims are opposed to terror, how did Morris arrive at this conclusion? I think bin Laden had it right. “By nature (people) will like the strong horse.” Isn’t this why we saw spontaneous celebrations on 9/11/01 in the Middle East?

  20. says

Rep Laura Richardson D-CA got really worked up at a “very dangerous precedent” of a religious group being singled out for examination by Congress.

She was positively quivering with indignation at the fact that the good name of Moslems everywhere was besmirched by the hearings.

Then Rep Laura delivered the knockout punch: she revealed that she had recently interrogated the federal bureaucrat who heads the Center for Counterrorism and forced him to reveal that only a “very tiny minority” of the persons of interest his office is tracking are Moslems.

That’s comforting. Hey Prez Barack Hussein, over here! Here’s a federal program you can shut down right now to reduce the deficit.

  21. says

    Which is it to be?

CAIR’s accusation that this hearing will promote hysteria and hate crime against Muslims or Rauf’s previous assertions covered by JW, that questioning Islamic motivation drives Muslims into radicalisation?

    “Ellison’s “Crybaby Jihad””

Indeed. King was smart to put Ellison as first witness. I watched Ellison’s testimony and it was so pathetic that it is unlikely to be setting the tone of any later witnesses. His overall performance was immature, emotional and so laden with Islamoleftist rhetoric that it may be presumed that all but certifiably far Left viewers will be see it for what it was.

CNN has been cutting in and out of the hearings, with commentary by Suzanne Malveaux and Candy Crowley. It is clear they sympathize with the critics of the King Hearings, especially Malveaux. Crowley is better at hiding her bias. It will be interesting to see how the proceedings develop.

Is it possible witness, Melvin Bledsoe (whose son converted and attacked an Army recruiting center in Arkansas) had the right explanation? “Political fear.” It seems like most of these Democrats said they lived in communities with significant Muslim populations. Bledsoe said it was out of fear that they might not be re-elected.

  26. says

I did not see Mr. Ellison’s testimony. According to news reports he said, “Some people spread false rumors and speculated that he was in league with the attackers only because he was Muslim….”

Perhaps Ellison missed all the conspiracy theories pervasive in the Middle East that it was the Jews who were the perpetrators. According to left-leaning ADL:

‘A typical comment published in April 2004 by the Egyptian government daily Al-Gumhouriyya indicated that not only were Jews involved in the attack, they were also behind the government and media cover-up. The article stated:

Al-Gumhouriyya: “We also find a heavy blackout by America regarding the results of the investigations into the September 11 events. So far it has published no conclusions, and has not told us who the real perpetrator of these events is, as revealed by the investigations. Since America knows very well that the Jews and the Mossad are behind these events, it will never declare the results of the investigations…”

I did not see Mr. Ellison’s testimony.

Oh man, Wild, you gotta see Rep Keith Ellison’s D-MN (first Moslem congressman) crying jag. He was weeping, torn apart at how hyper-patriotic hero Moslem Americans dared to slander his fallen hero just after 9/11.

Rep Keith also stated that Moslems felt the same pain as Infidels after 9/11 cuz 29 Moslems were killed in the attack — not counting the 19 Moslems who attacked the Twin Towers.

Ever since my first state fair carnival, I’ve always had a taste for geeky sideshows. I give Rep Keith an Oscar for his teary performance.

I am just as cynical as you. in public. Men, especially conservative public officials, are often berated by the mainstream media when they cry in public. I think it was Bush Sr. who teared up over something and we did not hear the end of it until he was gone. Women are given more leeway, though not always. Ellison, like Obama, has been and is in bed with very bad / unsavory characters including Hamas jihadists. I don’t trust him or his motives in the least.
