Egyptian convert from Islam to Christianity flees Syria, seeks asylum in France

How odd. Islamic scholars such as Salam al-Marayati, M. Cherif Bassiouni, and Ali Eteraz assure us that Islam has no death penalty for apostasy, despite Muhammad's words, "Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him." Misunderstanders of this Islamic tolerance of apostasy appear to be so numerous that Maher El-Gohary is seeking asylum in France, as he is not safe in Egypt or Syria.

"Egyptian Convert Flees Potential Dangers in Syria," from Compass Direct News, April 21:

ISTANBUL, April 21 (CDN) — A father and daughter who fled Egypt to Syria after spending two and a half years in hiding for becoming Christians have arrived in France and yesterday applied for asylum there, human rights advocates said.

Maher Ahmad El-Mo’otahssem Bellah El-Gohary, 58, had become the target of Islamic ill will in Egypt after he tried to change the religious affiliation on his national identification card from Muslim to Christian. He and his daughter, 17-year-old Dina Mo’otahssem, arrived in Paris from Syria on March 30 after having fled to Damascus on Feb. 22 in the wake of the revolution in Egypt that deposed then-President Hosni Mubarak.

The Jan. 25-Feb. 11 protests in Egypt also weakened the Ministry of the Interior, an agency that had harassed El-Gohary and prevented him from leaving the country.

El-Gohary had fled to Syria because it was both the fastest and the easiest way to get out of Egypt, but he said he also feared Islamic opposition to converts in Syria and growing political unrest in Damascus.

“When we got to the French embassy in Syria, we were so scared because of what was happening in Syria at the time,” he said....

Unfortunately, with the politico/religious climate in France, they probably won't have such an easy time of it there, either. May God Bless them on their journey and help them through their travails.

How long before he's no longer safe in France?

Sorry CGW, I see you beat me to the punch.

Is there any place that is safe? Even if they came to the US they would run the risk of deportation because religous persicution by Muslims is politicaly incorrect and not seen as a real risk by this administration. But at least if they are granted asylum in the EU they will have more opptions the next time they have to flee for their lives.

"Islamic scholars such as Salam al-Marayati, M. Cherif Bassiouni, and Ali Eteraz" --Robert

None of these guys has even an undergraduate degree in Islamic studies. Of course, Islamic scholars in the West are as likely to engage in apologetics as these three, but these three guys are connected to Islam more through activism and propaganda efforts, not through scholarly research on Islam. In other words, despite their presuming to comment on all matters Islamic, such as engaging in various denials about the punishments for apostasy in Islam, none of these guys is more qualified to comment on Islam than the average regular JihadWatch reader. I find each of them to be slippery and deceptive in their statements to naive infidels about Islam.

p.s. While Bassiouni has no formal education in Islamic studies, he has written some scholarly material on Islam, though it is not his specialty.

p.p.s. ...though at least one of Bassiouni's books appears to be da'wa, not scholarship.

He writes "The purpose of this book is to convey to a non-Muslim audience an understanding of Islam, its history, culture, and contribution to civilization."

And then what follows are the usual apologetics and propaganda.

From Bassiouni's book (see link in my previous comment) [my emphasis]:

"In its most glorious period, from the seventh to the thirteenth centuries, Islam produced a legal system founded on scientific knowledge and nurtured by a faith that has endured the test of time. But during that period it was ijtihad (progressive reasoning by analogy) which produced the most far-reaching developments. Reformers like ibn Taymiyah (late 1200's) was one of many great jurist-philosophers who opened new horizons in the knowledge and understanding of Islam's application to the needs of society. But in the twelfth century, ijtihad was pronounced ended by some theologians of the time. They argued that all was to be known was known. Consequently, Islamic jurisprudence became somewhat stagnant until its contemporary resurgence under the aegis of Al-Azhar scholars and other modern reformers of the last two centuries, such as al-Ghazali, al-Afghani, and Muhammad Abdu. Contemporary jurisprudential developments continue the work begun in past ages, meeting individual requirements and collective demands for resolving the problems and conflicts of modern life, while remaining compatible with Islam."

Bassiouni [my emphasis]:

"Reform ideas which derive from revival movements are not new to the history of Islam, nor do they advocate resorting to violence in order to achieve such a goal except where rebellion against unjust rule is legally justified. Examples of peaceful reform ideas are found in the learned teachings of the 13th century philosopher-scholar Ibn Taymiyya in Syria. In the 18th century the Wahabi reform movement developed in Saudi Arabia and its orthodox teachings continue to the present. Also in the 19th century the ideal of the "true path to justice" or al-salaf al-salih was eloquently propounded by Sheik Muhammad Abduh in Egypt, and his views continue to be studied by religious and secular scholars all over the world. These and other reform ideas have in common the search for Islamic truth and justice and their applicability to the solutions to Muslim societies' problems."

Egyptian convert from Islam to Christianity flees Syria, seeks asylum in France
.................................

Even though this is an appalling story, I am glad to hear it. I had wondered what had happened to threatened apostate and Christian convert Maher El-Gohary and his daughter Dina.

I always feared that they would eventually be murdered. While the chaos in Egypt mostly seems to giving Jihadists greater power and influence there, if that same chaos gave the El-Gohary's a chance to escape Egypt, then I am glad of it.

I hope France steps up and gives these two asylum.

So many of their vicious former coreligionists have flooded into France, though, that even there they may have to change their names and keep a low profile. Still, they'd be many times safer there than anywhere in Dar-al-Islam.

I am so glad to hear that Mr El-Gohary and Dina have been able to escape from Islamic Egypt. It appears that it is an ill wind that blows nobody no good.

I find that Monsieur Hector Berlioz has adequately expressed my response to this small piece of Holy Week good news:

Hell is screaming with rage...
Dar al Islam just lost its grip on two people.

Dar al Harb just gained two (and maybe, one day, in the grace of God, more, should Dina in due course of time find herself - as Hannah Shah, another ex-Muslim, did - a nice, sweet Christian boy to marry).

May they find a little village and church in France where they can freely join in the Easter celebrations.

May beautiful Dina be able to finish her education in a good French school.

I would advise them to contact either the 'Barnabas Fund' or Italian ex-Muslim, now Christian, Magdi Cristiano Allam, who is an MEP and author of the book 'Europa Libera Cristiana' (a paean to Western Christian civilisation).

One more thought:
given that 'Horse', our current Mohammedan dementor, is always rhapsodising about how wonderful Syria is for Christians, I think Mr El-Gohary's perception of Syria as dangerous for Christians - and especially for Christians who are apostates from Islam - sufficiently explodes that particular bit of nonsense and lies.

I just clicked on the link and read the whole story.

I advise everyone else here - especially the Americans, Italians and British - to do the same.

This poor man originally applied to the *Americans* in Syria for help, **and got the cold shoulder.** It appears that Obama's America has no particular interest in saving those who are trying to flee from the Ummah.

It was the Vatican who advised Mr El-Gohary to try the French.

From the article:

"El-Gohary called his escape from Egypt a “miracle from God,” but when he arrived in Syria he was quickly faced with the reality that he was alone in a country in which he had no support network and felt almost as unsafe as he did in Egypt.

"**Also, his expectation that he would be able to quickly obtain a visa to the United States proved false.** {my emphasis - dda}

"Frustrated by what he described as a cold reception at the U.S. Embassy in Damascus, he began to look for any country in Europe that would give him an entry visa.

'On advice of the Vatican Embassy in Syria, El-Gohary went to the French Embassy in Damascus, which issued a short-term visa the same day."

God bless France.

“I really appreciate what the French ambassador did for us,” El-Gohary said. “The French saved us.”

'El-Gohary was able to get to France with the support of Egyptian Christians and advocacy groups, **most notably the United Copts of Great Britain** {my emphasis - dda}.

'Dr. Ibrahim Habib, a Copt and the chairman of the group, said his organization arranged accommodation for El-Gohary and Dina with an Egyptian Christian in France.

'Habib said El-Gohary, motivated by fear, left for France unprepared."

So: for these two desperate people it was the French ambassador in Syria, the Vatican Embassy in Syria, and Coptic emigre human rights groups - including one based in Britain - who proved their salvation.

Mr El-Gohary, however, undeterred by the cold shoulder he got from America in Syria, is still having a go at applying for asylum in the USA (which, of course, has a much smaller percentage of Mohammedans than does France, so would be a somewhat safer place for a known apostate).

"On Monday (April 18), El-Gohary went to the Embassy of the United States in Paris to apply for U.S. asylum as well.

"According to a Coptic activist who requested anonymity, the embassy advised El-Gohary that his best option was for his wife, who lives in the United States, to apply for a visa to allow him to enter the country.

:El-Gohary is also applying for a tourist visa to the United States. Human rights activists have advised El-Gohary to stay in France while he applies for asylum rather than go to the United States on a tourist visa, which may leave him financially exposed and hinder his immigration efforts."

I would advise all American jihadwatchers to get ready to apply massive, loud, public pressure in the appropriate quarters on El-Gohary's behalf, should he pursue the idea of seeking ultimate refuge in the USA. Because Obama's Islamophile administration is horribly likely to reject such an application, and it will take a HUGE amount of noise to challenge that.

CORRECTION- I hope dina finds a nice, sweet arab christian to marry. Stop projecting your Freudist imperial complexes on women from third world countries, i notice you do this quite alot, hoping a muslim women gets bagged by a western guy.

Pai Hsien-yung aka Bai Xianyong, who is Hui, was sent by his father, the Chairman of the Chinese Muslim Association, General Bai Chongxi, to Catholic schools during World War 2, in Hong Kong.

http://www.independent.com/news/2006/sep/28/peony-dreams/

and for the record, as i said before, Pai is currently no longer a muslim, and he is a homosexual. He was not threatened by the Chinese muslim association, and received no death threats from any hui.

There is a community of Han families (who like to call themselves hui), the Guo and Ding families in China and Taiwan, who are descended from muslims, but they are not longer muslim, they are mostly buddhist, daoist, and only a few members are christian, they have many family branches. (they apostasized hundreds of years ago, the christians in their families are converts from buddhism/daoism not islam, they only know they are descended from hui through family records, artifacts like a quran or family practicies)

They proudly call themselves Hui, its not us who force them to.

English language reports on these families-

http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2008/08/31/2003421916
http://www.saudiaramcoworld.com/issue/197004/islam.in.taiwan.htm

They have received no death threats or intimidation for not being muslim.

Alot of muslims, who stay muslim and don't convert, go to Catholic schools to get education, not only in China but in other places as well. in China or Taiwan, its acceptable for Hui to send their children to catholic or christian schools or universities, as long as they don't convert, we are interested in education, not terrorism.

I myself was educated partly at a Catholic School.

correction to myself-

i notice you do this quite alot, hoping a non western woman gets bagged by a western guy

There you go again, with your brains in the gutter, only able to ascribe to people the ugliest and lowest of motives. You're accusing me of imperialism? PIFFLE!

I am a woman and a mother of daughters.

I wish for girls like Dina El Gohary, and other young female apostates from Islam, exactly the same thing that I wish for my own daughters: that they may live long and happy lives, pursue an education, find work that they enjoy, and - if they decide they wish to marry - a husband, a life partner, who will be loving and trustworthy and **not a Muslim** and with whom they may have children, should they so choose. My Christian husband is loving, gentle, considerate and faithful; so I would wish for Dina, and for my daughters, to find a man like that, should they wish to marry.

**That** is all that my remarks were intended to imply - that Dina might, if one day she decides to marry, find a man - black, white, brown, red or golden - who shared her Christian faith and would treat her well and be faithful to her alone. His skin colour and language are irrelevant to me. Maybe she *will* find a handsome Coptic emigre - like Mr Spencer's friend, Dr Raymond Ibrahim. Or maybe she will find a beautiful Persian ex-Muslim who is now a fervent Christian - there are plenty of those about, in America and Australia. who knows? Plenty of possibilities.

I would be happiest if my daughters - should they marry - married Christians (of whatever colour or ethnic background); but if their soul mate turned out to be Jewish, or Hindu, or agnostic, or atheist, well, so be it, so long as the man was of good character.

**Anything** but a Muslim - for there was a British study of family violence in the early 1990s that discovered that women married to Muslims, in Britain, were eight times more likely to be murdered by their spouses, than any other married women in Britain; and all the evidence coming out of other parts of dar al Islam suggests that, generally speaking, Muslims make **dreadful** husbands, violent and abusive.

We don't have family violence studies that resemble britain's in Taiwan or Thailand, since most family violence is between non muslims, theres no point in taking any studies based on religion.

And British studies can't be applied to muslims in east asia. You are taking a bunch of savages in Britain (who are members of terror groups like hizb ut tahrir), and claim they represent all muslims.

Tibetan and Mongol women from northwest china are perfectly content with marry muslim salar and hui, and non muslim minority women in Yunnan province of China and in Burma also marry muslims, there hasn't been any reports of honor killing, raping, beating, or garbage of that sort coming from any muslim in China, taiwan, thailand, and burma.

Syrian christians also take extreme offence at insults to their country's honor and dignity. they don't like foreigners criticizing their regime, especially those high ranking Christian generals in syria's military.

This egyptian person must have been a protestant if he were really afraid of Syrians in general, since they are viewed as zionist agents.

Hopefully they will find the shelter in their Christian fellowship. If not, they might want to try Canada.

Once again, "Horse" is never able to explain why so many of his coreligionists from the traditional heart of the Muslim world are so vicious in the name of their savage creed, and why only the tiny minority of Muslims scattered throughout far east Asia supposedly seem to have gotten Islam right.

He also seems fine with violently targeting Protestants and Jews, while implying—quite implausibly—that it would be other Christians who would murder them.

Maher El-Gohary and his young daughter Dina are at risk—in Egypt, in Syria, and anywhere else in the Muslim world—because they are apostates from Islam, and the penalty for Muslims "changing their religion" is death.

Syrian Orthodox and Catholics don't like protestants, ask them yourself how they feel about protestant arabs. I'm not the one who is mind controlling them and making them think like this.

Quit your obscene gloating over the follies of some Syrian Orthodox dhimmis who dislike and criticise Evangelicals - I'll *bet* they mainly do it out of fear of the Muslims, because the evangelicals 'rock the boat' by defying the sharia rule that dhimmi Christians are **NOT PERMITTED** to evangelise Muslims...and the Syrian Christians know what the Muslim Mob does to those who are perceived as 'uppity dhimmis'.

In any case, you DO NOT KNOW which Christian tradition Mr El-Gohary has chosen to practise.

Given that in the article it is mentioned that he has been helped and advised by Coptic Christian emigres in Britain and elsewhere, it seems to me to be perfectly plausible that he - born and raised in Egypt - may have chosen to follow the form of Christianity professed and practised by the Copts.

Nope. Russian and greek orthodox don't like protestants either, I've met them before, they dislike it because A)they are mostly american B)they are pro zionist C)they are not a traditional sect unlike orthodoxy or catholocism (some orthodox do not even like catholics either)

These are the same reasons that Syrian Orthodox oppose them.

the Coptic church doesn't exist in Syria so it wouldn't have the proper churches or facilities for worshippers

"Horse" wrote:

.............................

We were not discussing differing points of view—real or imagined—between Christian sects. The issue was Christians being *threatened with death*.

It is Muslims who are threatening and killing Christians and apostates, not Orthodox Christians or Catholics.

By the way, the whole thing about alleged Christian hatred of Protestants is what carnys refer to as a "swerve"-a distraction—in any case. The El-Goharys are not Protestants, but Copts.

As I said- the Coptic church doesn't exist in Syria so it wouldn't have the proper churches or facilities for worshippers.

Only Orthodox and Catholic church officials and patriarchs are in Syria, and only orthodox and catholic churches exists there.

There are the greek catholic churches, the assyrian orthodox, and the greek orthodox church.

there is no coptic church in syria, no officials, bishops, facilities, anything

But Syrian orthodox churches are treated perfectly well as are catholics.

according to one of your OWN WESTERN EVANGELICAL WEBSITES, converts to protestant christianity in Syria are not harassed by muslims, but by Syrian CHRISTIANS. (most likely orthodox or catholic)

"Syria is a secular state, but Islam is recognized as the religion of the majority. The constitution provides some religious
freedom. Thousands of Lebanese Christians sought refuge in Syria when war raged between Israel and Hezbollah terrorists in the summer of 2006, and many have stayed. Syria is also home to the largest number of Iraqi refugees — more than 1 million. Some refugees, including converts to Christianity, have experienced persecution in Syria.

Category: Restricted Nation
Religion: Muslim 90.32%, Christian 5.12%
Ideology: Islam
Head of State: President Bashar al-Asad

Traditional Christian minority groups experience relative freedom within the larger Islamic society. However, Christian evangelism is not welcome, and missionaries are not allowed in the country. The government closely monitors all activities deemed a threat to communal harmony, so most churches in Syria are hesitant to evangelize Muslims. The government is curious about those who convert from Islam to Christianity, but so far it has not tried to hinder conversions or harass converts. The biggest persecutors of converts from Islam are members of the traditional churches, who feel threatened by evangelism."
_________________________________________
The first bit about harrasment is talking about iraqi refugess only, and Not Syrians in General.

and then is says- "The government is curious about those who convert from Islam to Christianity, but so far it has not tried to hinder conversions or harass converts. The biggest persecutors of converts from Islam are members of the traditional churches, who feel threatened by evangelism"

It was on the demand of the Orthodox and Catholic churches in Syria that the government crack down on protestant evangelical "house churches", which led to their closure last year.

The Syrian orthodox and catholic churches are persecuting converts from islam to christianity, not muslims.

And I don't see what all the fuss Maher and Dina are all about with their identity cards.

In China, Han chinese descended from muslim arabs, persians, and central asians, like the Ding and Guo families in fujian and taiwan, because they were not muslim anymore, were forced to put "Han chinese" on their identity cards, but they DEMANDED that they be allowed to put "Hui" instead, even though they were either buddhist, daoist, or some branches of their families are former buddhists/daoists who converted to christianity.

Now they put Hui on their identity cards and papers.

In mainland China they receive extra benefits for minorities since they put hui in their papers, but they've been demanding it for a long time before that, when they were no extra benefits for Hui.

In taiwan there is no problem, they were counted as muslim in past by the Chinese Muslim Association, even though they are not muslim by religion.

"Horse" wrote:

And I don't see what all the fuss Maher and Dina are all about with their identity cards.
..........................

Without an identity card in Egypt one is essentially a "non-person". One cannot hold any but the most menial, "under-the-table" employment, and one cannot legally travel.

Identity cards in Egypt indicate the religion of the card-holder, and the El-Goharys could not get cards listing their faith as Christian because they are apostates from Islam. In fact, Dina has *always* been Christian, but is still regarded as an apostate because her father has never been able to change *his* id card.

Egypt, as a Muslim country, has deliberately failed to recognize converts *to* Christianity—converts to Islam have no such problems.

The El-Goharys were not able to leave the country until the current chaos, but were trapped in a land that denied them religious freedom, and where they were threatened with murder from Egyptian Muslims.

You might not understand "all the fuss" about peaceful people being forced to live as hunted animals, but anyone with a shred of decency does.

Sir gravy-

Identity cards are also part of Taiwan and China. Nowhere did I imply, except in your imagined ramblings and hallucinations, that identity cards are unneceasry in Egypt.

I noted that non muslim chinese who are descended from arabs and other muslims like to put muslim on their cards, regardless of their religion.
