Saudi Arabia: Eritrean Christian facing death penalty for sharing his faith with Muslims

Islam forbids Christian proselytizing, and mandates death for those who leave Islam. Yet in an astoundingly biased article about our successful freedom of speech court case against Detroit's SMART transit authority for refusing to run our religious liberty bus ads, Victor Begg of Hamas-linked CAIR made this claim:

The "Quran states 'there is no compulsion in religion' so those who want to leave Islam can freely do so," Begg, the senior adviser for the Council of Islamic Organizations of Michigan, added.

So why are the Saudis holding Mussie Eyob, and why is he facing death? Will Victor Begg denounce the Saudis' behavior and demand his release, and explain how the Saudis are misunderstanding Islam?

"Christian evangelist faces death penalty in Saudi Arabia," from Barnabas Aid, April 4 (thanks to Weasel Zippers):

An Eritrean Christian is facing the death penalty in Saudi Arabia after being arrested for sharing his faith with Muslims.

Mussie Eyob was detained by the authorities at a mosque in Saudi's second largest city, Jeddah, on 12 February. He had gone there to meet and talk with local Muslims after speaking about Christianity at the Eritrean Embassy for three days. Eyob was arrested for preaching to Muslims, an offence that carries the death penalty in Saudi Arabia.

Eyob, who was initially assumed to have mental health problems, was examined by doctors, who confirmed that he is fit for trial and sentencing. He was then transferred to the notorious high-security Briman Prison. His family are very concerned for his welfare there.

They visited Eyob on 20 March and found that he had lost weight, though he was in relatively good spirits. He said that he is ready to die for his faith in Christ.

Eyob, who committed to follow Christ just over two years ago, felt compelled to share his faith with local Muslims, despite the danger....

" He said that he is ready to die for his faith in Christ."

And Muslims are ready to accomodate him by killing him..

this is the religion of peace for you.

Don't expect any word of empathy or solidarity for such persecuted Christians by that suspected Islamic Trojan horse and Muslim Brotherhood, Hussein Obama! Who was bowing literally to the Saudi king and trying to arm 6 billion of weapon to this evil Islamic-ruled nation!

"So why are the Saudis holding Mussie Eyob, and why is he facing death?"

Let me try with a good apologist answer:

Because the Saudi Wahabiists are a bunch of crazy extremists who have hijacked Islam and taken its peaceful Kumbaya tenets wildly out of context. Uh, and the Saudies are engaging in cultural practices that have nothing to do with Islam. Uh, and it's just an example of evil tyranny and dictatorship, like any evil tyranny and dictatorship around the world, and has nothing to do with Islam.

Pious Muslims are terrified their co-religionists might discover the truth about Islam by listening to practitioners of other religions...

Muslims have to be so much afraid of other religions because of vileness of their own religion that they can't allow their followers even to hear anything from other religions. They are sure in their minds that if their followers find out good moral teachings of other religions they will definitely abandon Islam in droves. And that is why they don't allow anybody to talk about any other religion in allah lands. That is why they threaten and kill anybody who leaves Islam thus intimidating others who might be thinking about leaving Islam. Islam has survived only by intimidation, threats, violence of their own followers. Let the truth about Islam be known to it's followers which may go a long way to destroy Islam.

"The "Quran states 'there is no compulsion in religion' so those who want to leave Islam can freely do so," Begg [...] added."

I continue to be amazed, after several years of seeing that propaganda line (from 2:256) used over and over by Western Muslim apologists, at how far it departs from the reality of how most Muslims interpret and implement Islam. Not only is there compulsion in Islam, but the strength and endurance of Islam as a system over the centuries is mostly, due to the strong coercive elements.

Death penalty for criticizing Islam or Muhammad,
death penalty for leaving Islam,
death penalty for heresy,
death penalty for trying to persuade Muslims to change to other beliefs,
warfare against whole populations of people who refuse to accept Islam or Islamic rule,
enslavement and forced impregnation of non-Muslim female captives,
forcing children to embrace Islam by the age of puberty under the threat of death...
...these are some of the coercive elements that have aided Islam historically.

Add to these the Islamic requirement that those who are able to do so should marry and have many children to make Muslims more numerous than any other people, and that pretty much explains the dubious "success" of Islam.

---------------

I read somewhere recently another line of argument against the "no compulsion" apologetic. The claim is that the verse itself is merely descriptive; it doesn't actually instruct Muslims to do anything.

The main Islamic interpretation is that no one should be forced to convert to Islam, though mainstream Islamic interpretation also supports jihad policy, the dhimma, and the various death penalty items I mentioned above which all clearly involve coercion in religion. Specifically, the mainstream interpretation in Islam maintains that the "no compulsion" line does not apply to apostates, blasphemers, those non-Muslims preaching to Muslims, jihad policy, etc.

Ban Ki-moon where is your condemnation?

Still waiting......

The Beast is Dying, and they know it.
There are as many as 50 thousand baptizers in Saudi Arabia, the game is over Islam. A muslim sheikh on a muslim TV channel: "We are living a tragedy sir, by Allah, we are living a tragedy!"

For a book that claims to be the infallible direct word of God, the Koran has an amazing number of contradictions. These can be categorized as...

- External errors: Verses contradicting the facts of history or science.

- Verses contradicting the earlier 'Abrahamic' scriptures of the Jews and Christians.

- Internal contradictions: Verses contradicting each other or the laws of logic.

The most systematic and glaring of the third category are those in which later violent verses of the Koran contradict and 'abrogate' (cancel and annul) earlier peaceful verses. The peaceful cancelled verses are left in the Koran, but their only purpose is for Taqiyya (holy deception) whereby Muslims quote them to gullible non-Muslims to lull them into a false sense of security. The Muslims themselves know that such early verses as 'There is no compulsion in religion' and 'If you kill one person it is as if you killed the whole of humanity' are null, void and abrogated by the later 'Kill the unbelievers wherever you find them'.... http://crombouke.blogspot.com/2010/01/abrogation-of-koran-koranic.html

And Keith "Krocodile Tears" Ellison, when are you going to burst into tears about all the savagery done to kuffars by these islamic regimes?

You people are fuckin dirty ass white trash; THHEY HAD A NAME FOR YOU BACK THEN: dixiecrats YOU WERE THE BASTARDS WHO FAVORED SEPARATION AND SEGREGATION. all you conservative radical christions should go drink some cool aid and rid the world of your hyporcrizy. You talk and favor the BIBLE BUT WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU HELLPING THE POOR??? THE ONLY THING THE BIBLE IS GOOD FOR IS WIPING MY ASS OR AS TERRY JONES SAID USING IN A BARBEQUE

It sounds as thought the pious Saudis have two reasons to want to murder Mussie Eyob—he is preaching to Muslims, and—while it is not entirely clear—appears to be an apostate from Islam himself.

It is unlikely that Muslim-majority Eritrea will stand up for this poor man. Will anyone with influence try to save his life?

Kinana, a useful and instructive post.

In core Islamic texts, Muhammad says your "lives and property" are not safe from him unless you become a Muslim

In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the two most canonical hadith collections:

Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 25:

Narrated Ibn 'Umar:
Allah's Apostle said: "I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle, and offer the prayers perfectly and give the obligatory charity, so if they perform all that, then they save their lives and property from me except for Islamic laws and then their reckoning (accounts) will be done by Allah."

Sahih Muslim, Book 031, Number 5917:

...Ali went a bit and then halted and did not look about and then said in a loud voice: Allah's Messenger, on what issue should I fight with the people? Thereupon he (the Prophet) said: Fight with them until they bear testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his Messenger, and when they do that then their blood and their riches are inviolable from your hands but what is justified by law and their reckoning is with Allah.

Hey Aglagatooie--We have all enjoyed your intelligent and insightful post. In case you han't noticed we ARE trying to help the poor by keeping them from becoming useful slaves of Islam.

I know that it's a fuzzy line b/w brave & stupid when it comes to missionaries, but I'd rather that this man had stayed on in Eritrea and dedicated himself to sharing his faith w/ local Eritrean Muslims, w/ all it entailed. At least, if Eritrea can be somewhat de-Islamized, it would also make things easier in next door Ethiopia.

I used to think @ one time that Eritrea sessession from Ethiopia was like Pakistan from India, but I was wrong - Eritrea is 60% Muslim & 40% Christian. Hope those Muslims either convert, or move to N Sudan or Somalia.

I'm curious- are the Saudi authorities so appallingly insecure about their faith that they think that if given a chance, Muslims will abandon theirs just because somebody talks to them about an alternative creed?

Terry

PS Death penalty for preaching? Not even in Stalin's Soviet Union was this a capital crime!

I am blogging from Riyadh, and just read this. My Christian Eritrean maid is cleaning my apt. right now and I just asked her about this, and she hasn't heard anything about it yet.

But she just told me about a Christian Eritrean teenager who was starved to death when she was imprisoned in Eritrea one month ago when it was discovered that she had taken her Bible to a boarding school with her. Eritrea is now 2/3 Muslim and 1/3 Christian, so we can see what happens when the majority rules and the government there is dominated by Muslims.

"Aglagtitootega" has been spamming a number of threads with this vile garbage. One odd aspect of his posting this here is that he is accusing JW readers of being racist-even though this is an article describing the plight of a black man from sub-Saharan Africa.

Why would "racists" care about such a story?

The assertion that everyone here is white, Christian, and conservative would certainly come as a surprise to the many posters of color; the independents, the liberals, and the libertarians; and the Hindus, Jews, agnostics, atheists and others who regularly post here.

I wonder how "Aglagtitootega" believes that failing to stand against Jihad and Shari'ah would help—or "HELLP"—the poor?

Mussie Eyob certainly came from a poor country, and is likely a poor man himself—certainly, most of his countrymen who go to Saudi Arabia for employment are very poor.

And now he is facing the death penalty. But "Aglagtitootega" believes that our concern for this poor man—somehow—proves that we are intolerant racists.
