Pakistan paying U.S. lobbyists to deny it helped bin Laden

Here, a lobbyist pleads that, while some allege Pakistan "must have known" about bin Laden's presence, "Must have known doesn't mean knew." It's the return of the Clinton Qualifier: the tactic of insisting a claim depends on your definition of this or that word in order to deflect scrutiny into a debate over semantics.

So, it all depends on your definition of "know." Now you know. Or must have known, y'know. "Pakistan pays U.S. lobbyists to deny it helped bin Laden," by Tim Reid for Reuters, May 5:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Pakistan's Washington lobbyists have launched an intense campaign on Capitol Hill to counter accusations that Islamabad was complicit in giving refuge to Osama bin Laden.
Alarmed by lawmakers' demands to cut off billions of dollars of U.S. aid after bin Laden was found living in a Pakistani safe house for six years, President Asif Ali Zardari has ordered a full-court press to quell mounting accusations that it helped the al Qaeda leader avoid capture.
Mark Siegel, a partner in the Washington lobbying firm of Locke Lord Strategies -- which is paid $75,000 a month by the Pakistani government -- told Reuters on Thursday he had spoken twice to Zardari since U.S. special forces killed bin Laden on Sunday, and "countless" times to the Pakistani ambassador in Washington.
"They are certainly concerned," Siegel said, adding that suggestions the Pakistani government knew about bin Laden's whereabouts was nothing more than speculation.
Referring to a statement by President Barack Obama's counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, that there must have been a support system for bin Laden inside Pakistan, Siegel said: "There is no proof that a support system was government-based."
There is much at stake for Pakistan as many lawmakers question how bin Laden could have lived in a large fortified compound close to a Pakistani military base for so long.
Some members of Congress are now demanding that nearly $3 billion in annual aid for Pakistan, included in Obama's 2012 budget, be blocked until the Zardari administration explains how bin Laden lived untouched just 30 miles outside Islamabad, the Pakistani capital. Pakistan has received over $20 billion in U.S. aid since the September 11, 2001, attacks.
Patrick Leahy, the Democratic chairman of the Senate subcommittee that allocates foreign aid, said on Thursday he wants a complete review of U.S. aid to Pakistan.
Leahy said he was certain that some Pakistani military and intelligence officials knew that bin Laden was hiding so close to Islamabad.
"It's impossible for them not to have some idea he was there," Leahy told Vermont Public Radio.
But Siegel, referring to claims by the Afghan government that Pakistan must have known bin Laden's whereabouts, said: "Must have known doesn't mean knew."
Siegel's firm was retained by the Zardari government in 2008 and has earned nearly $2 million in fees since then, according to Justice Department records. Siegel said his firm is paid $900,000 a year by Pakistan.
Since bin Laden's death, Siegel says he has been on Capitol Hill every day to promote Pakistan's position on the bin Laden killing, talking to congressmen, senators and their aides.

ok we'll keep the aid if Pakistan delivers Al-Zawahiri within 30 days. Otherwise we'll keep the dough. Oh well, i can dream.

"There is much at stake for Pakistan as many lawmakers question how bin Laden could have lived in a large fortified compound close to a Pakistani military base for so long."

I question how some of our lawmakers didn't know this either.

Pakistan is still "baffled" as to how the Predator drones can find importantant targets and they "cannot". The top Taliban demand for "negotiations" is the stopping of the Predator drone overflights...If Pakistan was really serious about seeking out the Taliban, then the Taliban would have something else to worry about...as things stand now, the Pakistan military is the least of the Taliban concerns..The Pakistan military and the Taliban are brothers in arms...they support each other...and we should stop supporting them...time to stop all payments to Pakistan.

There is a certain inevitability that hangs over politics. Only rarely does it come to a snapping point, whereupon history lurches forward.

The forthcoming review of Pak's behavior and the country's true nature -- in connection with OBL and Jihad in general -- will be based on false assumptions, half-assed logic, convenience, dissembling, and a fair dose of reality denial (aka willful ignorance manifested as lies in the gubmint's stated conclusions).

This will be so. Which makes one wonder, why go through this Kabuki in the first place? I can think of a few reasons.

Wouldn't it be better to openly and honestly define Islam and discuss Pak's duplicity and all other matters Moslem based on honest reality?

How much of this lobbying bribes comes from the billions in US aid to Pakistan. Only silver lining here - some of that money is coming back to the US - now if only the IRS could get to audit these lobbyists

The leaders of both parties should tell their members not to talk to anyone from Siegal's firm. His firm will scream about it and the focus will turn from defending Pakistan to whether it is proper to blackball a lobbyist. It would also send another small message to Pakistan that America is displeased.

Too right pulsar182. I'd bet even the guy who owns my local cornershop knew OBL was there. way back. Word travels and people do like to brag. It's almost inconceivable that knowledge of his whereabouts were only witheld from kufur ears.

Muslims' use of the english language continues to be a hurdle that most westerners just don't recognise, even though it's punching them in the face like a giant fist. It's as much of a tool to them as the koran itself or the haddiths.

We see it in its most basic form when muslims claim that the koran can't be properly understood unless you can read arabic, and whatever claim one makes about this or that verse is "ah, see, yes, you're wrong, because you're not translating it right from the arabic. that doesn't mean 'behead them' it means 'invite them around for tea'"

and the gullible dhimmis swallow it.

Yeah, johnmatt, and that triggers me to recall Geller's contention that the real Ko-Ran has never been translated to English or any other Western tongue.

Tantalizing. Anybody got a link to the "Ko-Ran never really fully translated" topic?

Very true johnmatt. .a few swiped phrases, dancing eyes, head moving to-and-fro, throw in a pigeon-English quip and Hey Presto! the cobra strikes. Your wallet today, your neck tomorrow.

. .better to hang tough with the meerkat, mongoose and squirrel. They know how to deal with Reptilia.

Think of it. The CIA has had a nearby safe house for several months observing the very subject, and his habits, preparatory to the raid, just down the street from their intelligence training college!

There has been ground, to space based obs.(e based and physical), for months of the subject, costing millions, BTW. We've had 'im in our sites for months, and these stupid pakis can't put it together yet, who and the nature of, who they are dealing with. And they are supid enough to play us against the Chinese! And they are stupid enough to stay islam, to boot! What a bunch of losers and cowards. If they developed any brains or wisdom, they would return the tail piece with apologies, on their bended knees, post haste, and start nationally losing the islam BS thing! I know, I dream to much....

Oh yeah, abatabad also is where at least one other terrorist was taken down from. Seems likely abatabad has a bad rep along with its intel school, as being a place for terrorists to settle into, cozy like....hmmm....

'cause far too many of our "lawmakers" are not too bright, are duplicitous, and/or are untrustworthy for many reasons, including just plain dumb.

Only a few are good and bright patriots of America's heritage. And that situation needs correcting by America's populace, somehow, a populace badly in need of good education.

Is there any debate over this? It should be a "done deal", no more Pakistan aid. Certainly not in the billions of dollars. Maybe a little humanitarian aid to feed the hungry, or medicine, if we must. But no more US Aid to them, they failed to earn it, and deservedly must be cut off. Sink or swim on your own, treacherous Pakistan. They lie, they steal. We're done here.

at least some of the money we give them come back to the states!!!!

It should be illegal for any person or law firm to accept money from a foreign government, organization, corporation or company, or any group of any type, and then lobby US congressmen, congresswomen or anyone in the US Government.
Make it punishable by 20 years in federal prison.

I can't think of any good that can come from such lobbying efforts as they are only advertising firms that are paid to lie and make their clients look good regardless of how evil.

It makes me think about how much the Pakies may be paying to the trolls like 'horse' to gate-crash JW each day? He is obsessively Paki oriented.

PAKISTAN IS A FAILED NATION. ITS A NATION OF UNGRATEFUL PEOPLE. DOESNOT MATTER WHAT YOU DO FOR PAKISTAN THEY WOULD BITE THE VERY SAME HANDS THAT FEED THEM. THEY ARE ONLY COMMITTED TO THEIR MUHAMMAD AND THEIR SO CALLED ISLAMIC UMMAH. WHY FUND PAKISTAN? EXTERMINATE THEM. WARNING SHOULD BE MADE CLEAR TO THEIR WAHABI MASTER SAUDI ROYALS. PAKISTAN NEVER WANTED TO GIVE UP OSAMA, NOW THEY WILL TRY TO DO THE SAME THING PAKISTANI/AFGHANI TALIBAN IN PARTICULARY WITH HAQQANI GROUP. DAWOOD IBRAHIM THE TERRORIST IS HIDING IN PAKISTAN AND ISI'S MOST HONOURED GUEST. USA SHOULD ACT TO ELIMINATE THESE TERROR NETWORK.

Horse - there is nothing wrong when you honestly tell us that you are Pakistani. If your citizenship is other than a Paki, but your thinking is 100% pro-Pakistan, then you are not living under a happy environment. You are suffering, your family is suffering. Think a little about that. You should go to the Garden of Eden - Rawalpind. Thats a great place for you and the people like you. From there you can spread your toxic messages till the cows come home (I guess you hate cows - they remind you of Hindus). Here, your horse-scheiss is exposed for everyone to see.

This thread is about "Pakistan paying U.S. lobbyists to deny it helped bin Laden". You keep posting about India this or that.

PS - I've heard a large mansion is up for sale in Abbottabad which is only a stone throw away from Rawalpindi. I should grab that piece of the real-state before the Al-quada guys turn it into another Mecca - unfortunately. In Pakistan, Abbottabad will most likely to become the Islamic holy-place to visit in the future by every potential Jihadi - aka revenge!
