Saudi Arabia and Turkey tried unsuccessfully to persuade Pakistan to hand over bin Laden to U.S.

So the Pakistanis must have known he was there. "Malik gives Zardari’s message to Saudi king," by Syed Rashid Husain for Dawn, May 8 (thanks to Ashish):

RIYADH: Interior Minister Rehman Malik handed over a message from President Asif Zardari to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

The unscheduled visit and presence of the cream of Saudi leadership at the meeting between Mr Malik and King Abdullah set off a wave of speculations in Riyadh. Some observers saw the occasion as an aftermath of Osama bin Laden’s killing while some others linked it to, what they said, was an effort by Washington to reset its ties with Islamabad and Riyadh in the wake of the Arab uprising. [...]

The interior minister’s visit came at a time when fingers are increasingly being pointed in Washington towards Islamabad and its security apparatus over the presence of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad. Some press reports over the past few days have indicated that Saudi Arabia and Turkey had tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to persuade Pakistan to hand over Osama bin Laden to the United States.

So the Pakistanis must have known he was there.

And so must the Saudis and the Turks, both also supposed US "allies"... how come they too didn't tip off the CIA???

My guess is that Turkish and Saudi officials were quiet about their cooperation with the US vis-a-vis getting Pakistan to hand OBL over to the USA because they didn't want to tip off al-Qaida. Getting OBL was a very sensitive and tricky matter.
My guess is also that countries like Turkey and Saudi Arabia also have their intelligence operatives whose cover they do not wish to "blow".

And, as far as I know, there may well have been some sharing of intelligence between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the US. It's just that people tend not to talk to loudly about it, and those engaged in it don't like to tell the media. Perhaps some of the information the CIA gave to the US military to locate and kill Bin Laden may well have come from Turkish or Saudi sources. If so, those countries have my thanks, not my scorn for failure to speak up loudly.

Worth noting when reflecting on Pakistan’s harboring of OBL (or whether S.A. or Turkey encouraged them to give him up) is that in the Islamic law manual ‘Umdat al-Salik’ ( or ‘ Reliance of the Traveler’) under the section r8.2, headed “Permissible Lying,” it says this (bolding mine):

The best analysis of it I have seen is by Imam Abu Hamid Ghazali, who says: “Speaking is a means to achieve objectives. If a praiseworthy aim is attainable through both telling the truth and lying, it is unlawful to accomplish through lying because there is no need for it. When it is possible to achieve such an aim by lying but not telling the truth, it is permissible to lie if attaining the goal is permissible (N: i.e. when the purpose of lying is to circumvent someone who is preventing one from doing something permissible), and obligatory to lie if the goal is obligatory. When, for example, one is concealing a Muslim from and oppressor who asks where he is, it is obligatory to lie about his being hidden.

In fact, think about that in the context of ANY terror investigation.

Everyone knows that the Pakistan government tries as hard as it can...

I feel a wikileak coming on. :))

"If any member of the Pakistani government, the Pakistani military or the Pakistani intelligence service knew where Osama bin Laden was, we would have taken action," Haqqani told Amanpour. "Osama bin Laden's presence in Pakistan was not to Pakistan's advantage."

Osama was a major advantage to Pakistan - billions of US dollars and world aid was flowing into the Paki accounts in the search for BinLaden.

Here we have Amanpour and Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States, Haqqani snake oil sales persons, trying to give another spin to that is now too obvious, Osama was found right under the nose of the ISI and Military.

Turkey and Saudies are back tracking on something that is probably found in the Bin Laden's treasure. There are perhaps direct links to Turkey and Saudies. I guess more than 90% of his contacts will be known after docs/emails/hard-drives are all searched and analyzed.

I suppose the Saudis helped us because of their own interests, as Bin Laden is an enemy of the royal family. As for the turks, their military establishment has always had close relations with Israel(since the time of Ben Gurion) and the United States, even when diplomatic relations sour. Al-Qaeda did bomb Istanbul, and Bin Laden referred to the Turks as 'infidels'.

I find it hard to believe that after more than ten years of effort that the US would tip it's hand to anyone. I'm not eager to swarm to this conspiracy theory. Alot of buzz around a big pile of human waste. It serves no purpose to kick the pile in this instance.

Did this visit happen before or after Osama's death?

If after, I think that Riyadh is trying to salvage some clout in Washington (particularly Congress) by showing itself as pressing Pakistan to turn over Zawahiri and/or Mullah Omar to the US.

Do not make the mistake of trusting Turkey or Saudi Arabia - they are part of the islamic conspiracy against us!
