U.S. gov't official finds it "puzzling" that bin Laden would support "Arab Spring" uprisings

It is puzzling, if one is operating on the assumption that those uprisings, given a moniker that alludes to the Prague Spring, will lead to modern, pluralistic, tolerant democracies. Indeed, from the Balkan wars onward, U.S. foreign policy toward the Islamic world has been damaged by the tendency to see every popular uprising, and every separatist movement through the lens of the struggle for freedom from behind the Iron Curtain and the eventual liberation of now-former components of the Soviet Union and neighboring subject states.

Bringing down a dictator anywhere is now hoped and somewhat expected to bring the same results. And the resulting policy based on wishful thinking continues to be disastrous.

Meanwhile, bin Laden recognized that the uprisings in the Arab world have presented a golden opportunity to launch a wave of renewed Islamic states governing by Sharia, and that groups like the Muslim Brotherhood are poised and ready to seize upon the chance. It is only natural that he would be in favor of the uprisings, because whatever rivalries may exist with the Ikhwan and other groups, Sharia states will ultimately be friendlier to al-Qaeda, its members, and its agenda, and more openly hostile to the United States, Israel, and the rest of the West. "Unreleased bin Laden audio message called 'puzzling'," from CNN, May 13:

Washington (CNN) -- An unreleased audio message from Osama bin Laden, produced in late April, days before his death, in which he talks in support of the so-called "Arab Spring," was seized at the compound during the U.S. raid, according to a U.S. official.
The message refers to the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia but doesn't mention the uprisings in Libya, Yemen, Syria or elsewhere.
The official spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the classified nature of the information.
The official said it is "puzzling" that bin Laden would "suddenly join the bandwagon on the uprisings," months after they started and not mention all of the Arab nations in turmoil. For instance, the official said it was a "head scratcher" why bin Laden would not indicate his support for the uprising against Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, a man bin Laden detested.
"Why not try to inspire AQIM," said the official, referring to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, a regional affiliate.

The popular uprisings carry an air of legitimacy internationally that AQIM most certainly does not. And they have a better chance at the moment of successfully instituting more Islamic governments. They have great potential, in that regard, to do al-Qaeda's job for it, because the aim of all jihad is to impose Islamic law.

Since protests began across the Middle East, U.S. officials have said the movement undermined al Qaeda and offered an alternative to dissatisfied youth.
"The revolutions in Tunisia and in Egypt and the protests elsewhere that are leading to reforms in a number of governments I think are an extraordinary setback for al Qaeda," Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said on March 1. "It basically gives the lie to al Qaeda's claim that the only way to get rid of authoritarian governments is through extremist violence."
The U.S. official also said that among the seized materials were written communications from bin Laden expressing his desire to see U.S. President Barack Obama assassinated.
The United States expects to have further interrogations of the three wives of bin Laden who were taken into custody by Pakistani authorities after the U.S. raid on the compound. The U.S. official concurred with a description of the meeting on Friday with all three wives as hostile.

The Osama Bin Laden news has brought out this new propaganda phenomenon on the Osama youtube videos, Muslims or Muslim groups, I'm guessing MAS and CAIR are spamming the Osama is dead videos with Anti-America vitriol. At first I was thinking that they were just trolls and lots of them are but there seems to be a lot of these pro Islam guys posing as conspiracy theorists claiming that the US is using the bogeyman of Al-Qaeda to go to Islamic countries and steal their oil.

After thousands of pages released from wikileaks not one of them showed any US contracter getting any oil contracts in Iraq. Most conspiracy theorists usually just question the facts of 9/11 and don't supply direct answers where as these guys say that uranium tipped government planes hit the buildings. I wouldn't have even found that strange but when they all seem to share a extreme hatred of Israel and Jews (not just zionists) I begin to wonder, I mean you have to be either a Nazi or Muslim for that outlook.

Looking at the profiles they are usually made within the last couple of days and have countries of origin like Canada, United States, Britain, Ireland, of the most popular and strange to be so anti-jewish the jews are to blame kind of people. Odd as well is the way they attack you if you do not agree with them then you are an idiot American that needs to wake up you're a sheep. When you suggest they are muslim quite often you will get the same private message surprisingly that they are as white as snow, because of course all non muslims are white don't you know.

A couple of them are claiming to be gay, one even battled me on Sharia Law rights, because we know the Gays for Sharia Law movement is picking up so much steam. If you suggest Al-Qaeda is real and terrorism is a real threat look out bigot. Is this the new propaganda machine to hide behind the crazy truther movement and bash the USA from that angle?

If you are interested in checking it out for yourselves go to youtube and search Osama and the first few videos are loaded with these guys, take a close look and engage some of them and you will see that they are definitely an odd bunch, quite different than your average truther, here's one link I find a lot of them on.

Give the girls some roses and say it is for mothers day.
Send them some easter eggs and remember their birthdays. What a shocker that would be to their systems. Play Kenny G for them that will eventurally subdue their hostility.

Meanwhile in the Islamic Crescent from Morocco to the Himalayas, all the way to Java, there is a web wide call to "avenge" bin Laden's death. CNN: Jihadists eager to avenge Osama

Along with the condolences have come threats, both vague and specific. In a message posted on the Shumukh al-Islam forum and translated by the SITE Institute (a U.S.-based group which monitors jihadist sites), one contributor wrote: "We declare that all American interests, wherever they may be, are legitimate targets for the mujahideen, and the interests of the NATO countries as well..." ...Whatever the future brings, it is likely al Qaeda's plans will be more difficult to track. In the past 10 years it has spawned cells active from Casablanca to Java -- thriving wherever the authority of the state is absent and the territory remote. Al Qaeda ideologue Abu Musab al-Suri once said: "Al Qaeda is not an organization, nor do we want it to be. It is a call, a reference."
Not at all "puzzling" that common Arabs in Tunisia, Egypt, and all of the Islamostans would answer to bin Laden's call to world Jihad, raise money for Islamic 'charities' to finance Jihad, use modern info technology to spread the word of Jihad, in its "call" of reference to world Islamic Jihad. "All American interests" also means all Western tourists, hotels where they stay, restaurants frequented, for the world wide grass-roots web of mujahideen "Arab Spring" warriors. The whole Crescent region 'referenced' from northern Nigeria and Mauritaunia to Egypt, the whole Middle East, to Pakistan, to Indonesian Bali should be on the State Department's 'Travel Advisory' warning list. Why the surprise? They all call for Sharia. Don't go there. Cut off their funding.

Yeah, well it would be puzzling to the idiots at CNN and the rest of the mains stream media. Being a brain dead moron is a job requirement.

Hmmm, why OBL would approve of the Arab Spring is a real head scratcher, isn't it?

Our leaders seem not to have made much progress since 2005 in learning how to connect the dots http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rd8cRvZZv44

Marisol is right, but on top of her points, one more is worth remembering. Given that Osama was highly popular throughout dar ul islam, it's hardly surprising that he'd support Muslims in their desires to bring all their countries under democracy, which in Islamic instances imply mob rule by Muslims. In such a scenario, he'd probably have been annointed Caliph, had he found a country powerful enough to take on the US and keep him safe.

The wives were hostile? Subject them to some more beatings - in addition to the ones Osama must have subjected them.

The official said it is "puzzling" that bin Laden would "suddenly join the bandwagon on the uprisings," ...

What's puzzling here is the puzzled U.S. official. What is his basis for assuming that Moslems agitating against their Moslem dictators will naturally lead to Jeffersonian democracy?

For all the media we have, 24/7 news entertainers ceaselessly reporting and opining, somehow ignorance has emerged as the order of the day. First in the papers and on the TV, and now even on our personal computers and in our hands in the form of cell phones and tablets.

The more pipe we have, the the thinner the trickle of truth.

One must wonder where the filter is located, and how it works. Why is it so arduous to recognize apparent reality and make plain statements about it?

It was mistakenly reported by an historian about ten years ago that history had ended. But he got it wrong: factual reality has ended, which has unloosed history, bad history, on all of us.

As a former employee of the US State Department, I am not surprised at this sort of comment. There is a very long-standing (and foolish) tradition of initially identifying any movement against a dictator in power as "democratic". We saw it in our official interest in a "Third Force" in China between the Communists and Guomindang back in the late 1940's and frequent criticism of many of our anti-Communist allies during the Cold War. We see it now in the dubious identification of the rebels in eastern Libya as "democratic" simply because they are opposing the odious Moammar Qaddafi, whom even the possibility of being Harpo Marx's illegitimate son (take a good look at both men) cannot clear from the charge of being a thorough-going thug (apologies to the shade of the late great Marx Brother).

The uprisings in the Arab world are a golden opportunity for the jihadis. The Muslim Brotherhood is at the forefront of protests against the Assads, pere et fils, as they were against Mubarak. The Islamic bigotry of these movements is evident in assaults against the remaining Jews of Tunisia (and I wonder how the small community of Bahraini Jews is faring) and the Copts of Egypt. Support for Libyan rebels who only a few scant years ago were screaming supporters and volunteers for the Taleban and Qaeda is absolutely disgraceful.

We need not stand with either side in these uprisings. The dictators under siege are about as immortal as their opponents, and must sooner or later go, anyway. That they set up their states in such a manner that only violence can dislodge them is further reason why the USA has no dog in this fight.

"The U.S. official also said that among the seized materials were written communications from bin Laden expressing his desire to see U.S. President Barack Obama assassinated."

What? doesnt he know that Obama is a sekrit muslim who is stealthily imposing shariah law in the US? This must be some kind of super taqqiya to throw off the FBI/CIA.

Obama, Osama, Oh Mama. Could the killing of Osma bin Laden be the catalyst the unites the Sunni and Shite Muslims and bring Islam one step closer to the return of The Caliphate?

Can secular governments using modern warfare and powerful propaganda tools defeat a religious movement such as Islam? Can these same governments that have been so anxious to remove all traces of God defeat a religious movement of true believers? The Romans Couldn't-The Catholic Church defeated them!

Heretics- It has been written that Islam is another heresy like Nestorism and Protestantism-However it is different in the the founder of Islam was a unbeliever who came to believe- While the others were believers who chose not to believe any longer

Race to Heaven-The devout Muslim prays five to seven times a day, everyday, goes to the mosque often, if not everyday and lives by a strict moral code-while the devout christian prays only when needing something, goes to Church infrequently, most one a year and has abandoned most moral codes.

Hey--Get a grip on reality!

@john vondra

Could the killing of Osma bin Laden be the catalyst the unites the Sunni and Shite Muslims and bring Islam one step closer to the return of The Caliphate?

No, Muslims are to racist and sectarian to ever unite and stop blowing each other up yet alone bring about a Caliphate they would ever agree on. Islam is a failure.

"Arab Spring" is wishful thinking by the Western pundits who sincerely think there is possibility of bringing democratic freedoms and constitutional rule of law to lands that had been dominated by tyrannical, corrupt, brutal, dictatorial strong-men governments, in some cases since the days of Muhammad's Islamic expansion campaigns. These are all conquered peoples who have absorbed their conquest and been beaten into submission to mind-numbing Islamic dominance in every aspect of their lives. Their lives are so totally controlled by fear and submission that for each individual to think differently than the mass populace on any issue of freedom, personal freedoms, democratic freedoms immediately marks that person as a threat to the tribal mentality of the Islamic mass. Democratic, Western styled freedoms cannot exist in the Arab world, which is the tragedy of that god-forsaken world mired in their primitiveness, economic stagnation and insecurity. Osama bin Laden knows this to heart, and as a skillful theo-political leader, murderous that he was, he nevertheless understood where the peoples' hearts would be in times of stress, that they would turn to Islam, and more Islam, rather than towards the kind of freedoms enjoyed in the West. Of course he could predict support for his Sharia-Islamism in Egypt, Tunisia, and anywhere the Arab masses rise in protest, because in time the ball rolls into the Islamists' court, where it will be brutally played out. In the end, the common people capitulate to their fears, try to appease the powers, and submit in silent obedience to their theo-political overlords. That is Islam, and it should be of no surprise to anyone knowledgeable in government, academe, media, or the person on the street what is written in the Koran. Arab protesters are not really calling for democratic reforms, they are protesting first and foremost against economic hardship, exacerbated by corrupt dictatorial government, not their god forsaken Koran. What will they get in the end?

This is a kind of game of 'brinkmanship' played out by our democratic governments of the West, the kind played out if you still had hold of Empire, to bring into their countries so many Mohammedans as to bring their own governments to the brink of failure. Why would they get in the end? One wonders if perhaps some, especially the socialist Left leaning politicians and pundits (both in America and Europe), and their sympathizers, would not find greater comfort in dissolving our many individual freedoms, such as Freedom of Speech, of assembly, of conscience, separation of 'religion and state', etc. and replace them with collectivity of the kind posited by Marx and Engels; but even more durably posited by Muhammad, where the individual becomes lost in a sea of tribal, economic, theo-political collectivism. No one can stand out in such a world, there is no room for individual thoughts, but only the compliant beliefs of the masses all held together by the common bond of collective ideology, oppressive government, and fear of disobedience. The Left imagines itself as having 'evolved' beyond the tribalism of Muhammad's Islam, and thinks it can somehow elevate the Muslim masses to become more modern in their economic-political collectivist outlook. If so, they are due for disappointment, since the tribalism so finely honed by Muhammad (for his personal glory, booty, and slaves for 'Alla', especially female slaves) is pure 7th century, and does not fit into the 21st. There is no 'modern' Islam possible without abrogating Muhammad, so there is no progressive version the Left could ever develop, it is ontologically impossible. Instead, their importing this primitive ideology and all its mental baggage (including fast breeding multiple wives) will turn on them and drown in a collective sea devoid of any personal freedoms, of their own making. What will they get in the end? Collectivism devoid of humanity, of course: Welcome to Allah Hell™.

Muhammad had Marx beat by 1300 years, and he's still in control. Collectivism in the end is all the same.

Muhammad had Marx beat by 1300 years, and he's still in control. Collectivism in the end is all the same.
Yup, had Marx been born in the 7th century and instead of his 'religion is the opium of the masses' started a religion of his own, and made Das Kapital & Kommunist Manifesto its bibles, Communism would be a protected religion today, alongside Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, et al.

And if only Mohammed had been born in 19th century Germany - he'd have gone to jail for trying to bed a 9 year old.

Sometimes it's a "head scratcher" that our own officials can be so deeply clueless.

What rot. Osama bin Laden was *never* about the "haves and have nots"—he was always all about Islam. The idea that Islam represents some sort of "social justice" is just ludicrous. Many of the most poverty-stricken and unjust societies are Muslim. In fact, there is no way to impose Islam ad Shari'ah *without* grotesque injustice—to women, to non-Muslims, to the poor.

And North Africa is *not* intrinsically poor. It was the "bread basket" of Rome. It is no more lacking in natural resources than is Israel, a semi-arid country that is nonetheless blooming under good stewardship. It is the "inshallah fatalism" and suspicion of "Bi'da"—innovation—that keeps Muslim countries poor and backward.
