In a great day for alliterations, Belgian burqa ban begins

To participate in society, one must be recognizable. To be recognizable, one must show one's face.

It is one thing to be unidentifiable in a society where one is always under the control of a male guardian and a perpetual minor, and therefore not a full participant in society. But the Carnita Matthews case in Australia demonstrated how the surreal masquerade ball of face veils in an open society becomes a vehicle for gaming the system. It becomes a means of selective participation in society at the whim of the wearer (or in other cases, those who make her wear it), and presumes a right to pick and choose her responsibilities in society. That is not equality under the law, either for men and women or Muslims and non-Muslims. "Belgian ban on full veils comes into force," from BBC News, July 23:

A law has come into force in Belgium banning women from wearing the full Islamic veil in public.
The country is the second European Union nation after France to enforce such a ban. Offenders face a fine of 137.5 euros (£121; $197) and up to seven days in jail.
Two women who wear full veils launched an immediate court challenge, saying the law is discriminatory.
France, home to Europe's biggest Muslim population, enforced its ban in April.
Belgium's law bans any clothing that obscures the identity of the wearer in places like parks and on the street.
It was passed almost unanimously by the lower house of parliament in April 2010.
MPs voted with only two abstentions to back the legislation on the grounds of security, to allow police to identify people.
Other MPs said that full face veils such as the burka or the niqab were a symbol of the oppression of women.
But critics of the law say it could end up excluding women, leaving those who do wear the full veil trapped in their homes.
And they say the measures are over the top - estimates suggest only a few dozen women wear this kind of veil in Belgium, out of a Muslim population of about half a million.

What matters is that the practice has grown -- there used to be none. One could just as well find a situation some time from now where the argument would be they can't be banned because so many women wear them. For something that is wrong in principle, why would one have to try to wait until the number is "just right" -- and according to whom?

"We consider the law a disproportionate intrusion into fundamental rights such as the freedom of religion and expression," Ines Wouters, the lawyer representing the two women challenging the ban, told the newspaper La Libre.
She has taken their case to Belgium's constitutional court, where she will request a suspension of the law, AFP news agency reported.

Bravo, Belgium.

Bravo Belgium
yep! good old bbc,
do you think they would support it :-)

excellent news, now in France "apparently" the relative lack of political correctness is a refreshing change from UK. & the veil ban is seen gentle re-assertion of French equality & values.
Bravo France

Another day for common sense. No!! to the repressive practice of full face coverings. More countries should follow suit.
But lets not forget while we're getting the veil banned we,re still eating halal food, and giving other special privilages to Islam and its repressed followers.
Lets stop all implimentations of Sharia law across europe. lets not give the intruders an inch/mm untill they agree to follow our laws, sign the human rights declaration and leave israel to exist in peace.

Bravo Belgium from the grave?

It still astonishes that so many of the so called developed Countries – United Kingdom inclusive, up till today are still to pull up their pants from the deep dive in the sea of human naivety.

Europeans colonized, invented, created and developed human race. Special thanks to people like American Neil Armstrong is the man to walk on the moon. And, Maria Zaddy Haddad, who in 1979, became one of the first women in the Western Hemisphere to become a commercial jet airline pilot
My question is: Why is it that these paragons of improvement are just today - whole fully boarding last in the simple knowledge of clandestine tenets of Islam and its ring worm method of infectivity.

Today, what we are seeing is a tsunami of primitive civilization.

I sincerely cry for the West. Of course, like Mongo Park in his grave; who discovered the River Niger. And the River Niger has travelled and arrived to drown his posterity.

When tsunami occurs, not everyone at the reach of its roaring rage get either swept away or swallowed. Therefore, some of us - Observers, hope that in spite of the present day Islamic take-over, someone or some people will at the end remain as free people

To participate in society, one must be recognizable. To be recognizable, one must show one's face.

Or two of them. Never forget the two-faced thing when dealing with your Moslem neighbors.

"...launched an immediate court challenge, saying the law is discriminatory."

Well, of course it's discriminatory!; it discriminates against people concealing their identity in public.

Morons. These Muslim nitwits behave as if Islam itself does not discriminate as to what is halal or haram.

Peter DeDecker from the Flemish separatist party, NVA...

What would DeDecker have Flanders separate from, the nation state of Belgium?! That doesn't exist anymore, even the Walloon know that. What must be separated from is globo-socialism. And globo-socialists dig the Moslem thing, they like it like that.

Good news. Just say no to the burqa and to Islam

Bravo to the brave and benign Belgians. May they benefit bountifully from their brilliance. And may they break the backbone of the bellicose barbarians.

Booyah!

I think I need another bottle of beer.

No, critics, the "ban" is not the thing which will leave women trapped in their homes. If they stay in their homes rather than show their faces it is their choice. I doubt anyone will miss them out in the active, busy, free streets where they live.

As for their "husbands", if they insist on the impossibility of their "wives" without niqab outside, they can learn some new skills such as shopping and doing the family washing at the laundromat. And buying their "wives"' underwear and sanitary pads should be fun for them.

While she keeps her precious, dangerously sexy face at home, sulking and waiting for the groceries to arrive.

"And they say the measures are over the top - estimates suggest only a few dozen women wear this kind of veil in Belgium, out of a Muslim population of about half a million."

Then they shouldn't have any problem adjusting to the law of the country they reside in.

Does Belgium have a plan for how to enforce the ban?

France discovered that offenders could not be fined because they refused to bare their faces in court, and it's against the law for officials to undress people.

Australia recently introduced a new law that gives officials the right to rip off veils (or helmets). I wonder how long before that law is challenged on the grounds that it's "assault"?

"We consider the law a disproportionate intrusion into fundamental rights such as the freedom of religion and expression,"
And THIS is MY freedom of expression!!!

...........................

Very, very true. The same argument has been used with Shari'ah in general—that it is needless to ban it, since it supposedly s not only not used, but that no one is considering using it (never mind that this is hardly the case).

If it becomes more widespread, of course, the argument will run that it cannot be removed, since so many have come to expect it.

More:

"We consider the law a disproportionate intrusion into fundamental rights such as the freedom of religion and expression," Ines Wouters, the lawyer representing the two women challenging the ban, told the newspaper La Libre.
...........................

Really? Would the women of Afghanistan be so sanguine about the situation, as they were forced into Burquas under the Taliban? Would Aqsa Parvez be so insouciant, as she was murdered by her family in Canada for not wearing the Hijab?

As some posters have mentioned, I also hope that Belgium—like Australia—has legal mechanisms for enforcing the ban.

The West needs a generation of judges with your Frankness Locomotivebreath. I'd love to see these two complainers and their legal-aid lawyer Mr Wouters argue their non-case in front of the likes of a Judge Judy. .The cat fur would be blazing!

Truly, this is good news!

Another step toward islam becoming waslam.

Let's hope it's vigourously-enforced.

A few dozen women? This is obviously nonsense.

More importantly, it's in the message and example being set.

Germany next?

I've often toyed with the idea that any real change in the dreaded-ideology may come from within. The more the women of islam are oppressed, the more they're likely to resist. Unfortunate, and outrageous but sadly-true. Many of these women are educated individuals: intelligent and resourceful. Sometime in the future, might we see examples of Suffrage against their oppression by muslim men?

I won't be holding my breath, but i will be holding-on to the hope. I'm aghast at the roaring-silence of western-feminists. The fabled "Womens-Movement" appear to be, well, are not appearing to be! When i was growing-up, the bra-burning was front-page news, as were regularly-reported accounts and examples of institutional-chauvinism. This made people think 'out-of-the-box' and was part of the reason for change....

One can only hope....

In the last program of the BBC series 'The Life of Muhammad'
screened tonight, the concensus was that Muslim women should dress modestly but the hijab and burqa were not necessary.

The series presented a highly sanitized version of Muhammad and Islam. Apparently Muhammad was a mixture of Jesus, Ghandi, the Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa, Buddha and Confucius. Aisha was 16 or 17 when she married Muhammad and of course Jihad is the peaceful struggle of individuals to comply with Allah's wishes not aggressive holy warfare.

I am sure these programs have done much to advance the cause of Islam in the United Kingdom. There was no mention of him having killed all who spoke out against him or of his plotting, lying, killing, robbing, ransoming and raping his way to power. It appears we have all got it wrong. Muhammad was a nice, peaceful, friendly guy...... Must go now I have to write a letter of protest to the Director General of the BBC.

Stuart, do add my name as a signatory-in-absentia to your letter please. Thanks if you do mate.
