Camp David Accords on the brink: Egypt withdraws envoy to Israel

I tried to tell you. "Egypt to withdraw Israel envoy over Sinai shootings," from the BBC, August 20 (thanks to all who sent this in):

Egypt says it will withdraw its ambassador to Israel in protest at the deaths of five policemen, reportedly shot by Israeli forces on Thursday.

Cairo said it held Israel politically and legally responsible, and demanded an investigation and an apology.

Israel has promised to investigate the deaths, amid claims that Israeli forces killed the officers while chasing suspected Palestinian militants.

It is the first time in a decade that Egypt has withdrawn its ambassador.

The BBC's Yolande Knell in Jerusalem says it marks a sharp escalation in tensions between Israel and Egypt.

The 30-year-old peace treaty was already being tested after the long-time Egyptian leader, Hosni Mubarak, was forced from office earlier this year, our correspondent says.
'Erosion of order'

The latest violence began on Thursday when gunmen attacked buses near the Israeli Red Sea resort of Eilat, killing eight people.

Egyptian officials say Israeli forces chased the suspected militants across the border, and a number of people were killed - including the policemen.

Hundreds of Egyptians protested outside the Israeli embassy in Cairo overnight, burning the Israeli flag and demanding that the Israeli ambassador be expelled from the country. Protests were reportedly continuing on Saturday morning.

As the numbers of protesters grew outside the Israeli embassy in Cairo, the chants grew louder.

Protesters called for the embassy to be closed and the ambassador expelled. They burned the Israeli flag and tore down the metal barriers at the entrance of the embassy.

Some protesters carried pictures of the late Egyptian President, Gamal Abdel Nasser, known for his open anti-Israeli stance.

Such scenes were unheard-of during the Mubarak era.

Security is tight around the embassy, two military vehicles could be seen in front of the building, and armoured emergency vehicles were also at the scene.

"We don't want any ties with Israel," one protester, Ahmed Aggoura, told the BBC.

"Israel is only interested in a subservient Egypt, not a free Egypt. By protesting outside the embassy we're sending them a clear message. This is not Mubarak's Egypt anymore. If you kill our soldiers, there will be consequences."

On Friday, in Egypt's second city, Alexandria, a protester managed to take down the Israeli flag from the consulate there and replaced it with Egyptian and Palestinian flags.

After the initial Eilat attack, Israel expressed concern about security in the Sinai Peninsula and said Palestinian attackers had reached Eilat after entering Egypt from Gaza and travelling through the Sinai desert.

But the Egyptian cabinet issued a statement on Saturday denying it had lost control of the Sinai and demanding an apology from the Israeli leadership over "the sad and hasty remarks about Egypt".

"The Egyptian ambassador to Israel will be withdrawn until we are notified about the results of an investigation by the Israeli authorities," said the statement.

Cairo said it regarded the attack as a breach of the 1979 peace treaty between the two nations, and blamed Israel for lax border controls.

Under Mr Mubarak, ties between the two nations had been stable after a history of conflict.

But Mr Mubarak's ousting in a popular uprising has sparked fears among Israeli officials that a less amenable government could take charge in Cairo.

And correspondents say the Sinai desert region of Egypt has become increasingly lawless since Mr Mubarak was ousted, with a rise in militant activity inspired by al-Qaeda....

So much for internationally-brokered peace. We Spencerdanian devotees always knew you were a prophet, if not the Prophet.

Perhaps another fire storm in the Sinai is exactly what the Egyptians need to be put in their place. And this time, keep the Sinai for good. There can be no peace with these Muslim aggressors. The sooner Israel realizes this, the better.

As per the attacked bus (392) driver:" I saw Egyptian military's and, suddenly they start to shoot on us."

May be it is up to Egypt to apologize to Israel ????

Who knows if the Egyptian soldiers killed were not part of the ambush???

Hugh Fitzgerald and many others wrote here for years that the "cold peace" with Mubarak wasn't worth the paper it was written on and frequently advocated its repudiation. Now that the Egyptian strong-man is gone, we're all lamenting it...and watching the repercussions spiral out of control.

Chances are the Egyptian police let the terrorists through in the first place. Now they want an apology. At least the islamists are consistent with their unmitigated gall!!!!

Israel clearly needs to refortify its Sinai border with Egypt, and to prepare for another war, particularly if the Muslim Brotherhood gains sway in both Syria and Egypt. In that case, it should clean house, regardless the cost and not repeat the Lebanon fiasco.

Over the long run, the Islamization of Europe (and resultant Muslim Mediterranean) could make Israel's geostrategic position untenable and viability as a state uncertain.

In the short-run, one would expect a toppling of the Alawite Assad regime in Syria to undermine Iran's position in Lebanon and, possibly that of Hezbollah as well.

Any treaty with the infidel may be broken at any time.

A slam-dunk in a long line of slam-dunks for Spencer in the ongoing so-called 'Arab Spring' (smirk).

To switch sports for a second, Robert, just swing for the fences every time the ball comes near you. You could do it blindfold to make it more interesting for yourself...

dear block,

"Perhaps another fire storm in the Sinai is exactly what the Egyptians need to be put in their place."
i would go further, (much much further) and say to put ANY and ALL musloid believers and *countries* in their place...
yes of course, you've got to start somewhere so egypt is the obvious place...

"And this time, keep the Sinai for good."
this goes without saying. it applies equally and **especially** to judea and samaria!
the golan heights should follow as well.

"There can be no peace with these Muslim aggressors."
with respect block, the use of the word 'aggressors' after 'Muslim' is redundant...
they are musloid, therefore it is in their inbred genetic code that they are aggressive (and this is the mildest of adjectives)

" The sooner Israel realizes this, the better."
i am afraid that the virulent suicidal ideology of retarded liberalism, entwined with mc-pc is very deeply rooted in israel's fabric.
bibi who is being viewed as 'a hawk' i come to see more and more as a disappointment, and perhaps due to the numerous factions that must be kept happy for his coalition government to exist. nonetheless, he becomes more and more like the war hero that arik sharon was, saved the country in the '73 war...only to give away gaza to these miserable worthless pos fraudulent pathetic excuses for a human being... and so a whole chunk of israelis were forcefully evicted from homes and gardens they have built, and given to these terrorists....
FOR WHAT??
to appease the world???? ef the world!

so now bibi seems to be ready to 'make painful concessions'
question is WHY???
what mandate has he to make these 'painful concessions?

i am a totally nonobservant/ not religious jew.
nonetheless, i think with every fiber in my body that the ONLY group to truly represent jewish and israeli interests without pandering to the rest of the world, is
http://jewishisrael.org/

like in the u.s. , so in israel there seem to be two totally different socoieties:
the 'liberal elitists' of n-y and california that sip their lattes and sympathize with each and every garbage group and organization to show their enlightenment and broad views
mirrored by their tel-aviv / herzlyia israeli counterparts.

Psalms 83:2-5
See how your enemies are astir, how your foes rear their heads. With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish. "Come," they say, "let us destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel be remembered no more." With one mind they plot together; they form an alliance against you... Speaking of Israel's Arab neighbors.

This is the beginning of the next war against Israel. The major problem this time is: The Egyptian armee is equiped with the latest American tanks and planes. This time, it's going to be a close call.

"But Mr Mubarak's ousting in a popular uprising has sparked fears among Israeli officials that a less amenable government could take charge in Cairo."

Of course there is going to be a less "amenable" (i.e., more openly Islamic) government established. The global jihad is establishing their Islamic democracy kingdoms around the world with the blood of the West and in preparation for their loose uniting of the Muslim world.

And, of course, it's all Israel's fault for doing something "aggressive" and messing up the "peace process". Legions believe this.

Israel never loses a war, they just let themselves get talked into a false truce.

If Israel wins the war, she should permanently take hold of the Sinai peninsula. Although it is basically a huge desert, it does give Israel a strategic asset. Land for peace is no solution, because the muslim promises are basically lies. They loose land for war.

I hope Europe and the USA have the resources and will to help Israel this time.

Are you suggesting that Hugh Fitzgerald was wrong about the Israel-Egypt treaty? If so, there is one rather important detail you are omitting: before the treaty the Sinai was under Israeli control. What may be happening right now is just what the critics of the treaty have been predicting from before it had even been negotiated: the peace, which can be annulled at will by one side, is of necessity temporary, while the transfer of the Sinai is a done deal as soon as the treaty is signed, and practically irreversible. So it is precisely the opponents of the treaty who have been vindicated by the "Arab Spring" and the subsequent deterioration in the Sinai.

My humble opinion is that there are more deaf and dumb people in the US, than in any other country in the World.

"Egypt withdraws envoy to Israel"

This could be part of a larger strategy being pursued in support of Palestine's application for UN membership next month. My colleagues in Israeli tell me they are girding for this confrontation.

I'm suggesting that a "cold peace" under Mubarak was preferable to what is currently transpiring. For 33 years, the Egyptian-Israeli border has been quiet. No more.

"But the Egyptian cabinet issued a statement on Saturday denying it had lost control of the Sinai and demanding an apology from the Israeli leadership over "the sad and hasty remarks about Egypt"."

and just to prove their point Egypt is dispatching large military forces to regain control of the Sinai from the al-Qaeda forces who have owned it for a while..

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-14587101 :

"BBC Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen, in Jerusalem, says the desert region [Sinai] has become increasingly lawless since the Egyptian revolution that ousted President Hosni Mubarak, with a rise in al-Qaeda-inspired militant activity"

Wow

"Egyptian officials say Israeli forces chased the suspected militants across the border, and a number of people were killed - INCLUDING THE POLICEMEN."

I SMELL A RAT! There are several ways in which those police may very well not have been the collateral damage the Egyptians are claiming.

1. The terrorists could have been dressed as police.

2. The terrorists could have BEEN police.

3. The terrorists could have been meeting the police amicably.

4. These police could NEVER HAVE ACTULLY EXISTED.

5. The police could have been tryig to aid the escape of the terrorists by fireing on the persuing Israeli soldiers.

As far as the very real possiblility that those police were really terrorists-

Remember that there have been attacks against police stations in Sanai. Aside from weapons, police uniforms can also be found in police stations. Considering how many terrorists commit atrocities while dressed as police it is obvious that police uniforms were looted as well.

If the altercation did occur, then what weapons the people dressed as police held will indicate weather they were really police or not.

oops I should have said

If the altercation did occur, then what weapons the people dressed as police held MIGHT indicate weather they were really police or not.

They did loot weapons along with uniforms.

"Israel is only interested in a subservient Egypt, not a free Egypt. By protesting outside the embassy we're sending them a clear message. This is not Mubarak's Egypt anymore. If you kill our soldiers, there will be consequences."

It's amazing that these pinheads cry about others attempting to make them submit. Considering the name of their religion translates to submission, and the entire middle eastern culture is reliant on a strongman running things, I don't see how they feel that they have a reason to make such ridiculous statements.

Also, given that islam also has a built in component on enslaving others, it makes such statements by muslims all the more preposterous as they don't even see the contradictions.

The spectacle of Muslim blatant hypocrisy, projection, turnspeak, reversal of reality and general absolute refusal to entertain the principle of reciprocity, is disgusting to any fair-minded human being.

What underlies all this hoo-ha is the simple assumption that Muslims have carte blanche to do unto any non-Muslim WHATEVER they want, up to and including mass murder, torture, rape, robbery, etc; and that the non-Muslims have NO RIGHT WHATEVER to do anything at all in response. The very last clause added to the 'Pact of Omar', the archetype of all the rules imposed on non-Muslims in Muslim lands, the dhimma, is the rule that the dhimmi must NEVER strike a Muslim. Period. A blanket ban. No exception made for hitting in self-defence. (And many non-Muslim foreign visitors to Muslim lands in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries were horrified by the way in which Muslims, even young children, habitually cursed, slapped, kicked, punched, spat upon, beat or hit, or threw stones or refuse at, random non-Muslims, whether Jew or Christian, whom they encountered in the streets; and the victims never resisted, but would try to flee, or to dodge the blow, or beg and plead for a mercy that was seldom accorded; one observer saw a Muslim in Constantinople knock to the ground a pregnant Jewish woman). The very idea of a non-Muslim hitting back at their Muslim attacker is anathema to Muslims. It's like a burglar or rapist or mugger who sues for 'assault!' after his intended victim has successfully fought back.

In this case, Arab Muslims take for granted their right to kill Jews at will - e.g. four middle-aged couples driving in a car on a highway deep inside Israel, minding their own business; but O the screams of hysterical Muslim rage when the IDF in hot pursuit of the Muslim murderers crosses into Egyptian Muslim territory and, in the course of the firefight, accidentally kills some Egyptian Muslim police (who, for all we know, since the jihad raiders appear to have crossed into Israel *right under the nose* of an Egyptian border guard-post, may have been actively or passively complicit in the attack).

As G K Chesterton put it in his 1915 essay "The Barbarism of Berlin" (where he identified this same pernicious rejection of reciprocity that was taking hold among some philosophers in Germany) - the definition of the true savage is that he laughs when he hurts you, but howls when you hurt *him*.

And THAT sums up Islam in a nutshell.

The latest violence began on Thursday when gunmen attacked buses near the Israeli Red Sea resort of Eilat, killing eight people.
...

Hundreds of Egyptians protested outside the Israeli embassy in Cairo overnight, burning the Israeli flag and demanding that the Israeli ambassador be expelled from the country.
.....................

I don't suppose there will be any Egyptian protests over the murder of these innocent and unarmed Israeli resort-goers? Of course not...

I don't suppose that if the peace between Israel and Egypt is completely violated by the latter, that Israel gets the Sinai back?

Really, I have to stop asking these silly questions...

robert, friends:

war is inevitable.

it will be waged by israel against hamas, hezbollah, syria, egypt and jordan, and if waged against these parties alone will largely be a repeat of past wars except perhaps more costly for israel.

iran will not partake directly in the war, simply because she cannot get there, and will have to be content to do via its proxies.

the critical unknown factor is turkey. no war is frivolous. but, turkish intervention in a pan-arabic/islamic war could have very serious consequences, indeed.

the turks are not incompetents, and they will not flee from any battlefield, and they will join the fight, and it will be a "close combat" situation with the turks, quite likely involving infantry.

this is pivotal.--

one of the difficulty with israeli strategic/military thinking is the reluctance of the israelis to develop any capacity for committing infantry to battle, ... , they will not do so, because they will not suffer the casualties associated with infantry combat. in my opinion, this is why israel fights the same war over and over again, which involves the infliction of harm upon her arab adversaries sufficient to take their strategic arms from the battlefield. in short, israel fights until she destroys arab fighter planes and tanks, and then refuses to join in closer battle because she will not accept the casualties, and refrains from strategic punishment of arab civilian populations and infrastructure because she fears the criticism of "disproportionate damage" hurled at her by the left.

in short, israel will not, in practicable terms, kill anyone when she fights them, she just destroys their ability to attempt to "project strategic power."

if turkey gets involved, it will be telling, because i do not believe the turks will allow that option, or strategic approach, if you will, to the israelis.

if turkey gets involved, israel is going to have to kill infantry to keep infantry from penetrating her borders.

turkis involvement makes this a very serious set of warfare contingencies. if turkey steps in, israel is going to have to kill a lot of people to maintain her existence.

i do not know if she is willing to, and this frightens me, considerably.

john jay
milton freewater, oregon usa

p.s. i say that war is "inevitable."

by that, i mean precisely this.--

the arabs are too stupid not to start it by attacking israel, and too impatient to accomplish their aims any other way, and too incompetent to be able to see how to accomplish their aims any other way.

in short, their blood is up. they think victory "inevitable."

i think they have another think coming, as we say out n.e. oregon way.

JJ, good thinking except I doubt if Turkey has the necessary projection capacity to get enough infantry into the fight. However, their longtime involvment with NATO will add a new wrinkle to the next war Israel will have to fight. Meanwhile, by that time, one will have to keep a wary eye on Pakistan's nukes. A couple of nukes shipped from Pak. to Turkey with Turkey's better trained pilots could be ugly. Then there's Iran........

Months ago JW warned of this. Egypt will become more and more dangerous. Israel must take steps to protect itself without the United States help.

The U.S. has become a group of cowards and ignorant people whom are so full of themselves they can't see past their nose. Israel can no longer count on the U.S. for help or protection.

Because of this Israel shouldn't consider the U.S. an allie. Because the U.S. will say and do anything Islam asks of them out of fear I suspect.

Citizens of the U.S. are also on their own from this day forward. The U.S. legislators are pro political correctness first and formost and not its citizens.

Washington D.C. is already influanced by Islam, that will only grow worse as time passes. So be forwarned Islam is powerful in the entire world and is 100 times more dangerous than A. Hitler was.

Our nation is in serious denile to the facts. Some things never change.

You're right, Mr. Jay. I recall the sudden escalation fed by popular fervor that sparked the '67 Six-Day War. Events are spiraling toward conflict with no exit in sight--BHO's Nobel Peace Prize and our Pax Obamaia being of no value. I thought--then and now--that B. H. Obama, Jr.'s election would bring about war. We see it for ourselves.

You all are talking Armageddon here, a concept well established in the Judeo /Christian scriptures. So if you are an unbeliever still it's your own responsibility. The evidence is as clear as the nose on your face. Here's only one of many prophecies.

Zechariah 12:2-5
"I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves. On that day I will strike every horse with panic and its rider with madness," declares the LORD. "I will keep a watchful eye over the house of Judah, but I will blind all the horses of the nations.
