Mauritania: Prosecutor seeks prison for anti-slavery activists

Anti-slavery crusaders have great difficulty in some Muslim countries because slavery is rooted in the Qur’an and Muhammad’s example. Muhammad owned slaves, and the Qur’an takes the existence of slavery for granted, even as it enjoins the freeing of slaves under certain circumstances, such as the breaking of an oath: “Allah will not call you to account for what is futile in your oaths, but He will call you to account for your deliberate oaths: for expiation, feed ten indigent persons, on a scale of the average for the food of your families; or clothe them; or give a slave his freedom” (5:89).

But while the freeing of a slave or two here and there is encouraged, the institution itself is never questioned. The Qur’an even gives a man permission to have sexual relations with his slave girls as well as with his wives: “The believers must (eventually) win through, those who humble themselves in their prayers; who avoid vain talk; who are active in deeds of charity; who abstain from sex, except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess, for (in their case) they are free from blame…” (23:1-6). A Muslim is not to have sexual relations with a woman who is married to someone else – except a slave girl: “And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess. It is a decree of Allah for you” (4:24).

Slavery is still practiced more or less openly today in Sudan and Mauritania, and there is evidence that slavery still continues beneath the surface in some majority-Muslim countries as well -- notably Saudi Arabia, which only abolished slavery in 1962, Yemen and Oman, both of which ended legal slavery in 1970, and Niger, which didn’t abolish slavery until 2004. In Niger, the ban is widely ignored, and according to a Nigerian study, as many as one million people remain in bondage there.

"Mauritania prosecutor seeks prison for slavery activists," from Middle East Online, August 18 (thanks to Twostellas):

NOUAKCHOTT - The Nouakchott public prosecutor on Wednesday called for jail terms to be handed out to nine anti-slavery activists accused of "rebellion".

The nine members of an anti-slavery NGO appeared in court charged with "unauthorised gathering and rebellion", after they organised a sit-in protest against child enslavement.

The accused were arrested on August 4 during their protest in front of a Nouakchott police station against the enslavement of a 10-year-old girl.

They claimed the woman accused of keeping the child as a slave had been freed on the day of the protest, while the child was missing.

Mauritania abolished slavery in 1981 but it continued unabated and a law making enslavement punishable with up to 10 years in prison, introduced in 2007, has not been applied.

Human rights organisation Anti-Slavery International says on its website some 600,000 people are estimated to be enslaved in Mauritania.

In court the prosecutor demanded that eight of the defendants should be jailed for at least two years.

The ninth, accused of assaulting a police officer, deserves a three-year term, the prosecuting team added.

The defence lawyers called for their clients to be freed, saying they were only helping to apply the law by denouncing the enslavement of minors.

"Our clients should, on the contrary, be thanked for helping this crime to be uncovered," one of those lawyers, Mohamed Ould Bilal, said....

Yep.

WOW, I look forward to seeing this on MSNBC with commentary by Rachael Maddow.(sarc). Does the vast majority of muslims in the world really approve such vile Mohammedan behvior?

if they're following their errant prophet, every Mohammedan wants to own a US slave or two or three or more.

"Human rights organisation Anti-Slavery International says on its website some 600,000 people are estimated to be enslaved in Mauritania."

I guess someone should notify Louie, the lip, Farrakhan in order that he can immediately do a youtube video to put out the anti-Muslim slavery issue.

According to hadiths and sira, Muhammad (wether a historic or a fictitious/composite character) grew rich selling wifes and children of Banu Qurayza. Since he still is the perfect example there is nothing in the way of the muhammadan mumins to follow his example to maintain the institution of slavery.

A jihadwatcher commenting here, not long ago, related how, in conversation with a Kuwaiti Muslim of his acquaintance, said Muslim had declared that slavery was permitted by the Sharia and that therefore slavery should no longer be banned.

Here's the thread:

"I used to live in Saudi Arabia and I found it fascinating that many of my students still lived with their African slaves, who had been "liberated" several decades before yet had nowhere to go and no way to get there.
"This is technically not much different from the US in the 1880s... with the great exception being that the movement to abolish slavery did not develop naturally within Islamic Saudi Arabia, but rather was forced upon them by the post World War II international political order from without.
"I also used to find it sad, on some freakish level, to see all the African-American converts to Islam who had relocated to Saudi Arabia to live where they could wrap their wives up in burqas/abayas, and enjoy their unearned status of superiority over the Infidel without having done a thing to earn it,
"yet at the same time the local Arabs just looked down at them with total racist disdain and scoffed at their attempts to indigenize and become equal.
"It got so bad that in one of my classes I had to demand the Saudi students from ever referring again to the African student in my class as nigger **and slave** {my emphasis - dda} which I found repugnant. (Brilliantly, this African student was one of my best students!)
"And very technically, this anecdote could easily be recast and retold at various places across the United States, either in the past or even in the present day,
"but what really shocked me recently was a coffee I had with ** local, well educated late-20s Kuwaiti here in California** {nota bene, everyone: a Kuwaiti Muslim, a 'moderate' Muslim, living IN CALIFORNIA - dda}
"who stated to me point blank:
"Islam allows slavery, and therefore slavery should be legal and re-institutionalized.
"Its abolition is a violation of Islam and cannot be tolerated."
'Honestly, I was shocked.

'Certainly, relations between the various ethnic groups in the United States are not without their deep problems - even in the best of times -
'but never have I come across a multi-lingual, well traveled, university educated Westerner who stated or even insinuated that slavery should be reintroduced to our countries..".
Got that, everyone? A young man from Kuwait, educated, superficially westernised, living in California, and he said - IN AMERICA, ON AMERICAN SOIL -
"Islam allows slavery, and therefore slavery should be legal and re-institutionalized.
"Its abolition is a violation of Islam and cannot be tolerated." END POST

Got that, everyone? This 'educated' Kuwaiti Muslim, whose country was rescued from Saddam Hussein's attack by the United States, and he is sitting on American soil - on the soil of a country that fought a civil war over the issue of slavery - and he says coolly:

**"The abolition of slavery** is a violation of Islam and cannot be tolerated"**.

Why was someone who publicly called for the restoration of slavery tolerated for one more second on American soil?

Actually, our jihadwatch poster, the guy who heard him say it, should have handed in the Kuwaiti's name and details that very day to the police, the CIA and the FBI...and perhaps to the Anti-Slavery Society. The Kuwaiti should have been scrutinised very closely; because someone who was brazen enough to tell an American to their face, on American soil, that 'the abolition of slavery is a violation of Islam' 'and cannot be tolerated', is EXACTLY the kind of person who might turn out to be keeping a slave or two in his basement, or engaging in human trafficking of one kind of another.

Another Kuwaiti enthusiast for the wonderfulness of slavery (if you are the slave-taker and slavemaster). It was a waste of time 'liberating' them. They should have been left to the tender mercies of Saddam Hussein...A Muslim female in Kuwait was also rhapsodising about the benefits of re-instituting slavery...

Muslim Woman Seeks to Revive Institution of Sex-Slavery

In order to prevent 'immorality', forsooth. PUKE.

And here is an Egyptian imam fantasising about being able to go down to the slave market and buy a girl to take home for sexual purposes.

Note - these people are not from third-world African Muslim countries like Mauritania and Somali. They are not in Saudi Arabia or Iran or Afghanistan or Pakistan. They are from supposedly somewhat-secularised *Kuwait* and *Egypt*.

Americans are taught the history of slavery in the U.S. which distorts the reality of slavery and it's origins, history and popularity.

Helps put perspective on the history of muslim slavery and the origins of U.S. slavery.
