So why are U.S. soldiers being put to work delivering sheep for slaughter during Ramadan?
Obviously to win Muslim hearts and minds. But will it work? Is there any evidence of any kind that any of these gestures of good will have ever been reciprocated, or ever mitigated the ferocity of the jihad against us?

A slight flaw in your comparison:
US soldiers don't need to win the hearts and minds of Christians or Jews. They have spent the last ten years trying to win the hearts and minds of Muslims, to no avail.
One has to conclude our military and civilian leaders are insane. They do the same things over and over, expecting a different result from the Muslim community.

I look at the money aspect of this insane gesture. How much is it costing us to deliver this sheep? What’s the cost of the fuel for the truck that carries this sheep? $10/gallon? $20? $100? Remember all that fuel is trucked into Afghanistan via Porkiestan in truck convoys and you have to add in the costs of all those convoys there were bombed by our good friends Porkie supported Taliban. How much do we pay the soldiers per hour? That has to be taken into account. The time spent devising this scheme by the higher ups?

My unit was given dates, the fruit, the give out after Ramadan, I think, when we were in Iraq in 2005. Cases of the things showed up and we took them on patrol to hand out to people. Most of them ended up dumped on the side of the road. We didn't care must for the hearts and minds programs.

Individual Muslims may reciprocate kindness and help given by infidels even if they are under no obligation to do so. I know that from personal experience. Some years ago I was helping an Iraqi refugee to obtain family reunion with his 14-year old son who was stranded in Syria after his Mother and family were killed in the beginning of the 2003-war. I worked pro bono and when the official permission for family reunion was obtained the Muslim showed his gratitude with a bottle of whiskey and a large box of chocolate. I was surprised.
America's military had been turned into a giant peace corp. The counter insurgency strategy was been a dismal failure.
For the commanders of the military to state that killing the enemy is not as important to the army as winning the hearts and minds of the Afghan tribal people is a disgrace, has wasted billions of American tax payer money and worst of all has gotten many of our soldiers killed or wounded. We need to pull out of Afghanistan our military leaders have totally failed their men and our country.

I personally know that Muslims encourage their little children, especially boys, to witness the slaughtering of an animal and it seems they do this as if planning for a future 'marauding soldier' or an inevitable 'war'(Jihad?). Most of the Muslims I've known have showed unbelievable insensitivity towards either women, children, animals or anybody considered 'weak' and I believe this is a general trend in the Ummah.

The GIs nicknamed one of the dogs "Target". Long-time readers here will have no difficulty understanding why:

We never really 'won' the Iraq war. Our leaders were so busy with the business of democratization that we never finished the WAR. We have been put in the position of shaking hands with the right hand, while the left hand holds a gun to their heads. Needless to say they are somewhat apprehensive in any dealings with the US.
We should have finished the killing first. Then started building. Presently we bandage up someone, only to shoot them the next day. I was once told,"you can't make sense out of insanity."
