Iran threatens to deploy warships near U.S. waters

The threatened deployment would be an expensive spectacle to attempt to make a point. Whether they go through with it is another matter altogether: talk, after all, is cheap. "Iran says could deploy navy near U.S. coast: report," by Hashem Kalantari for Reuters, September 27:

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran raised the prospect on Tuesday of sending military ships close to the United States' Atlantic coast, in what would be a major escalation of tensions between the long-standing adversaries.
"Like the arrogant powers that are present near our marine borders, we will also have a powerful presence close to American marine borders," the head of the Navy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said, according to the official IRNA news agency.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 31st anniversary of the start of the 1980-1988 war with Iraq, Sayyari gave no details of when such a deployment could happen or the number or type of vessels to be used.
The declaration comes just weeks after Turkey said it would host a NATO early warning radar system which will help spot missile threats from outside Europe, including potentially from Iran. The decision has angered Tehran which had enjoyed close relations with Ankara.
And it comes a few months after Iran sent warships through the Suez canal, after the fall of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the first time the Islamic Republic had deployed navy vessels in the Mediterranean.
The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to stop it getting nuclear weapons. Tehran denies it is developing nuclear arms saying its atomic program is for purely peaceful purposes.

Wink-wink.

Iran has dismissed the threats, warning that it will respond by hitting U.S. interests in the Gulf and Israel if any such attack happened.
Analysts say Tehran could retaliate by launching hit-and-run strikes in the Gulf and by closing the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway where about 40 percent of all traded oil passes.
The Islamic state often launches military drills in the country to display its military capabilities amid persistent speculation about a possible U.S. or Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Iran is threatening to put war ships off the U.S. coast? Iran's position in the global jihad is that of instigator. Iran's little President has many times declared Iran to be a martyr nation. He is willing to sacrifice the Iranian Muslim population in suicidal jihad. After all, in Islam the ummah (Muslim world) belongs to Mohammad's Allah and can be used for jihad. And, what better way to officially unite the Muslim Brotherhood's global jihad than to provoke a nuclear attack by the U.S.?

A nuclear missile could be sent up into the air from one of the Iranian ships next to the U.S. which could create an EMP explosion. Why don't our analysts state the obvious or are they afraid of causing panic and disturbing our "peaceful" relationship with Iran like they are with Pakistan? Retired Major General George Vallely has stated that Iran has nuclear weapons. An EMP explosion could be the end of the U.S..

http://biblesearchers.typepad.com/destination-yisrael/2010/05/retired-major-general-paul-e-vallely-admits-iran-has-nuclear-weapons-nuclear-iran-part-one.html

that is a shame Iran had such a nice navy you can see the headlines The entire Iranian fleet sunk by US Coast Guard. - oh the joys of free speech!

Last year Iran did threaten to send their own peace flotilla to Gaza to break Israel's blockade. But they punked out. It would have been a humiliation they could ill afford.

We let ourselves be distracted in Iraq and Afghanistan for ten years while the global jihad took control of Africa, killed off almost whole populations of non-Muslims (and Black Muslims), and plundered Africa's natural resources. (The world needed another defensive crusade against Islamic conquest, but we were not morally fit enough to do it.) Now, they don't have to bother with conquering the U.S. first, they can just darken the U.S. with an EMP.

thats no laughing matter treats like that could end up with Global Thermo Nuclear War if the Americans let a couple off then the rest will follow as long as one is aimed at Mecca all the better

It is time for the US to stop playing nice. With our satellite tech. we would see the Iranian navy moving in our direction long before they got here. Since Iran let its intentions be known, as soon as they got into position they should be sunk. Iran needs to be reassured that the US has a reason to be in the Med.sea, (Iran's rattling her sword) but Iran has no reason to be off the US's Atlantic coast. Force should be overwhelmingly applied, Iran should lose her entire navy in one fell swoop.

Iran is the trouble maker, but is US the troubleshooter, with no political will to fight Islamic forces??

Dilly dalling with Iran will prove very expensive at the end. Its time, take the bull by its horns.

If the superpower can not tackle a third word country like Iran, what else it can acheive?

During WWII germany deployed several u-boats along our east coast and caused enormous damage. From a tactical standpoint the U-boat attacks were far worse than pearl Harbor. For a period, the u-boats practically owned the eastern seaboard. Now that was a threat. Iran threatening to deploy one of their puny, dinky little gunboats is fodder for a hilarious Saturday Night Live skit.

l think if anything is going to happen it will be before the next president takes over the US.. knowing that obumbler is paper tiger they will use it to their advantage. maybe Israel will save us!

The completely nutty thing about this so-called threat is that the Iranian navy has absolutely no lines of logistics that could support such a tiny, detached flotilla thousands of kilometers from home.

Anyway, once the the crews of such ships saw the bright lights of New Yawk glittering in the distance, they would probably attempt to claim asylum in the US! End of 'threat'.

Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari is a clown!

'The mouse that roared', was a rat...

Blinker: puny, dinky little gunboats aren't so puny if they have nuclear weapons.

Everyone the world over needs to remember that Iran and the U.S. are still, ever since 1979, in a state of war. Whatever is to come should not be a surprise.

elcid1907:

We cannot be sure of the efficacy of an EMP attack.

First, uncertainy demands prudence. We have to prudently assume that an Iranian EMP attack on the U.S. would largely succeed, and we have to assume that an U.S. EMP attack on Iran would fail.

Why? Because the U.S. is much more dependent on electronics than Iran, and because no one has experience with a deliberate EMP attack. The 1950-era nuclear tests give only an idication of what could happen, they cannot prove it will work.

Second, prudence dictates that we must accept the possibility that the Iranian leadership is composed of apocalyptic nutjobs. We cannot dismiss the possibility just because we wish it were not true.

"The completely nutty thing about this so-called threat is that the Iranian navy has absolutely no lines of logistics that could support such a tiny, detached flotilla thousands of kilometers from home."

True, but lines of logistics can be improvised. And what if the Iranian flotilla does not plan on returning?

"Anyway, once the the crews of such ships saw the bright lights of New Yawk glittering in the distance, they would probably attempt to claim asylum in the US! End of 'threat'."

Also true, if the ships are crewed by ordinary iranians. Ships crewed by Revolutionary Guards are another matter.

Please remember, some clowns are dangerous.

"We have a strategy drawn up for the destruction of Anglo-Saxon civilization... we must make use of everything we have at hand to strike at this front by means of our suicide operations or by means of our missiles. There are 29 sensitive sites in the U.S. and in the West. We have already spied on these sites and we know how we are going to attack them." - Iranian Army Chief http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=fc7_1178306585&comments=1

Exactly.

Sean, someday somone will write a book and include that quote to show how stipid the U.S. government is. The book will ask "Why didn't they see it coming?"

My answer would be, some in the government did see it coming, but they were hamstrung by politics. Politics in a democracy ultimately is an expression of the will of the people. My answer would be "Why didn't the people and the U.S. news media see it coming?"

But then, we already know the answer to that question.

An exercise in unbiased decision-making is to take one party and replace it with another - if you take a statement such as "an asian man that robbed 15 liquor stores last month has been released on parole." then change it to "a white woman that robbed 15 liquor stores last month has been released on parole." You then must temper your judgement based on the distilled portion.

Let's say that it was our (U.S.) near neighbours Brazil or Mexico that put WARSHIPS in our waters, would you be feeling the same fear?

I would. You should, too.

WARSHIPS, ladies and gentlemen. Islamic, Catholic, or Pastafarian - those are people with big guns pointing at our heads.

"Let's say that it was our (U.S.) near neighbours Brazil or Mexico that put WARSHIPS in our waters, would you be feeling the same fear?"

But the article is about Iranian ships NEAR U.S. waters.

Of course, any foreign warships IN U.S. waters without U.S. approval would be a concern. In truth foreign warships enter U.S. waters with approval all the time under the rubric of "alliance building".

At present we should not worry about Brasilian or Mexican naval ships. If we saw friends of a liquor store owner going into a store with guns and the owner is waving them in with a smile we would not be concerned.

The likelihood that the US would allow any state to park warships carrying nuclear weapons off their coast is straight out of Alice in Wonderland. It just ain't gonna happen! Believe me.

"The likelihood that the US would allow any state to park warships carrying nuclear weapons off their coast is straight out of Alice in Wonderland."

We did with the Soviet Navy.

And, in the present Alice in Wonderland climate, it would be a reasonable bet that we would let the Iranians do so, fools that we are. I agree with you, we should not. We are at war with Iran, whether we admit it or not, in a way that we were not with the Soviets. The Iranians know it too.

A combination of a vacuum in brain-power, eyesight, geopgraphy and imagination has brought us here.
Egypt allowed Iranian ships to pass through Suez. (they were just convenintly standing by after a visiting ports routine to Yemen, Suadia Arabia.
Then Syraia agrees to an Iranian naval base at Latakia; how helpful to assist those Gallaway runs to Gaza from Turkey.
Oh, not to put a damper on things has anyone noticed a massive Israeli-Cyprus natural gas field in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Now, think - in terms of Geopgraphy. Draw lines to the sites mentioned. Then THINK again.
Then try to tell me that this intentional hegemony is only a religious thing.

A nuclear EMP has a short and long pulse. The long pulse will create excessive currents in both above and below ground wires which will burn out power transformers and power lines. This unintentionally happened in Russia in the early 60’s near Kazakhstan after a 300 kiloton nuke was exploded at high altitude. Power stations and power lines were set ablaze by the Russian EMP. At that time there were very few semiconductors in commercial use and certainly non near Kazakhstan. The short pulse that comes shortly before the long pulse has been thoroughly tested in simulators and will induce tens of thousands of volts on wires with lengths of a few feet or more. This means that any semiconductor device that has a wire with a length of over a few feet that is attached to semiconductor circuitry will be disabled. The worst part is that this disables power station automatic shut down systems just before the long pulse hits the system so that the grid system is destroyed. Couple this with the fact that our entire transportation, financial, and other life essential systems are semiconductor computer based and would be immediately disabled in a cascading order. The repair job would be too big to handle for service personnel with special power transformers not available for possibly years. Add to this the fact that the high altitude nuclear burst will spread radioactive waste in orbit which will disable most of our satellites for a prolonged period.

Would Iran do this? Would they not suffer the same fate if we retaliate? Would we not retaliate by leveling Iran? Those are the questions and we have no answers. The Russians and Chinese both have EMP nukes but they are both rational trading societies. Iran has demonstrated irrationality by their devotion to the Mahdi and their way to bring the Mahdi back from the well. Personally, I doubt that Iran would use their identifiable military warships for such an attack when they could use unidentified trawlers manned by terrorists to attack us anonymously. However, their warships could be a forward reconnaissance effort for the terrorist trawlers that they may send in the future. What better way for them to bring the Mahdi back then to destroy the USA anonymously and watch us devolve into chaos and death. Iran is a primitive society and could continue to live without modern conveniences but we cannot.

Spot on, you are spot on!

Day dreamers! Quite like Pakistan where bloggers believe that the Indian economy is no match to theirs. Funny enough, quite a number of Iranians are dreaming in the same clouds.. They believe their country to be the second emerging Asian economy after China and that they would be a superpower pretty soon! I guess the Mullah brigade and their harem is playing a fatalist card here.. 'Inshallah', and there goes Iran, off the world map! Oops!

If they stay in International waters then I say it's perfectly fine, they are within their rights.

The US does it all the time. Don't like it when someone does it back, of course.

If it's really a threat then extend the territorial waters.
Until then sorry, but one rule for us and another rule for them is an insult to anyone's intelligence.

And in fact, if it shows how logistically incompetent they are and once again writing checks that Iran can't cash.... then all the better.

Everyone else.... the flag's a little too tightly wrapped around your gizzard. Give yourselves a break.

Iran is an evil country znd society evil plays, works, and fights evil. Iran is an Islamic state it must act accordingly. With those two things in mind Iran can not act on its own.

The good news is there are other Islamic states whom are paid billions of dollars weekly by the citizians of the United States for oil and gas products. If all hell breaks loose that market will end (fail) within 2 weeks.

Just as important is the fact that no Islamic nation or citizen would step outside of Muhammads mindset. Which simply means Muhammad was the perfect man in every way. All Muslums are to follow (submit) accordingly. Its important to know exactly how Muhammads army always used taqiyya to gain the enemies trust just before he would behead them and win the battle. Evil (Satan) is also a great trickster whom would first gain the trust of his victims prior to betraying them.

Iran will not announce its offensive prior to battle. Why? Because that is not the way of Muhammed or Satan did it. Tricking your future enemy into believing he is your friend is of great value prior to battle. Its like killing someone who is sleeping but it works really well.

Iran would be stepping out on its own if it did announce its battle plan without the approvel of Muhammad, Sharia Law, or the other Islamic nations. Something which may even anger Allah. Its just not like Islam to be honest with kuffars.

Nonetheless, never ever trust them and you'll never be sorry. Which all of Islam, like you would watch a poisonous snake and never ever trust them.

"...prudence dictates that we must accept the possibility that the Iranian leadership is composed of apocalyptic nutjobs. We cannot dismiss the possibility just because we wish it were not true."

Tom, Your comments are right on the mark. The problem is that most people think "inside the box". "Inside the box" thinkers believe that a fight-to-the-finish kind of war will not happen because is has not happened in almost 70 years. They also believe that no one would dare hurt us because we would retaliate with our massive nuclear arsenal. "Outside the box" thinkers relate to current events and believe it could happen at any time as dictated by current circumstances. Understanding Iran is difficult at best but I do believe that Iranians would celebrate en masse for months while anxiously awaiting the Mahdi's return if we were destroyed with nuke EMP(s). They are looking forward to armageddon. Any Iranian politician also knows this and their current politicians are devoted to the Mahdi. The only safe conclusion that I can come to is that if we give them the chance, they will destroy us.

I find your comments to be naive, mal-informed and, particulary, your last sentence, snotty.

While the USA does maintain a naval presence in international waters near countries all around the world, WE are not openly calling for the destruction of Israel.

And yes, we don't like it when hostile regimes park vessels close to us. So what? Nobody "likes it".

Too bad. The muslims attacked our USS Cole AT PORT in Yemen.

"If it's really a threat then extend the territorial waters."

First off, extending U.S. territorial waters by a hundred miles or even five will not help our security in this age of modern missiles. As Spot On pointed our, any suitable freighter could get close enough to launch IRMBs or SLCMs, both of which Iran has.

Second, territorial waters have to conform to common international law. The U.S. cannot push out it's limits unless it respects other countries doing the same.

Third, as we see below, we really don't have to extend them.

=========================================

"Until then sorry, but one rule for us and another rule for them is an insult to anyone's intelligence."

Ah, but it IS possible for there to be "one rule for us and another rule for them" that is NOT "an insult to anyone's intelligence." It is called a state of war. Outside of acts defined by treaty as war crimes any rule we need to win is allowed.

Here is an act of war:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_hostage_crisis

Here are other acts of war:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Samuel_B._Roberts_(FFG-58)#1988_deployment_and_mine_strike
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Praying_Mantis

The United States is at war with Iran, to this very day. Until Iran normalizes its relationship with the U.S. it deserves a double standard.

I can't reveal my sources, but the U. S. Navy is taking this seriously. So seriously that they have begun moves to requisition certain specialized civilian vessels. Yeah, they're the glass bottomed variety, which the navy is going to use to allow people to see what happens first hand when some ametuer jerks try and step up into the big league. Current bets are that irans " navy" should last about as long as a politicians promise ... ok, maybe not that long.
