Democracy, true democracy, must be accompanied by freedom of expression and a myriad of other freedoms (such as the right to change one's religion without fear of harm or death), by common sense to insuure these freedoms are exercised responsibly and by the infusion of a sound moral or ethical system, otherwise one gets a bastardization of democracy, such as exists in Gaza or any Muslim country which plays at democracy. It is instructive how Muslims time and time again get democracy wrong, such as thinking that not permitting someone else to speak by shouting them down is constructive democracy in action.

No Muslim, be they a so-called moderate or a radical, i.e., devout Muslim, can claim to be a champion of democracy because Islam is antithetical to real democracy through and through. No exceptions here. Any Muslim asserting that they embrace democracy is actually spitting in democracy's face because the religious belief system they adhere to is a totalitarian ideology and totalitarianism and democracy are completely, utterly incompatible. This ain't rocket science, only an obvious truth for those who can recognize the obvious, which, of course, excludes all Muslims and, unfortunately, many, many non-Muslims.

It is obvious that the Muslim students do not understand what the First Amendment means and why it exists.

It exists to protect dissenting points of view, yes, but not at the expense of other points of view. Freedom of speech doesn't mean silencing people you disagree with.

Freedom of speech applies to everyone.

If I remember right they were to have a Q&A session after the forum. They could have made their statements then and it would have been no problem.

I think a fundamental lack of understanding of what free expressison represents is the problem. Once a person believes a "constructed truth" like religion it is already problematic. All religions hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainisn, Judaism, Christanity etc developed internal structures to deal with the issues of constructed truth. The result was that wherever these faiths are majority you end up with "reasonable" freedom of individual whilst at the same time that same individual can remain devout.

In other words these faiths with the exception of islam developed the concept of "freely given consent". This allowed flowering of "consent to govern = democracy", "consent to express = individual rights". However in Islam the consent is not free. The consent comes from submission thus the internal religious structure of Islam militates against free consent.

To explain the above concept in Islam:

Islam itself is a state like US, India etc. Thus as the US constitution constrains the nation of US and its people, Sharia constrains the state of Islam and its people. A muslim is foremost a residednt of the state of Islam and thus is forever constrained by Sharia. In this scenario any law applied from outside this state is seen as "anti islam". Therefore any application of US law against a muslim is seen as a direct attack on the state of Islam and from that point of view it (the application of US law)appears to a muslim that sharia has been violated and thus consent from god has been violated ipso facto destruction of islamic consent or islamic democracy.

Thus muslims can only live within a "open society" as a state within a state. Sooner the policy makers understand this the better it will be for all concerned as any expansion of sharia/islamic state will be at the expense of open society and never on basis of co existence (until Islam develops the concept of freely given consent).

Islam: where freedom ends and slavery begins.

Islam knows nothing about free speech or freedom to think for your self. Muslims in general are kept from thinking and are taught only to submit to the ideology of Islam and sharia law. That is not freedom.

Islam is not tolerent of freedom only surpression and submition. Muslims must submit to Islam 24-7, every minute of every day not because their God (Allah) has told them but because that's the way Muhammad did it. And we all know (because we've been told) Muhammad was the perfect example of man. If you don't agree you will suffer.

Please someone tell me where is the freedom of thought there? Those students didn't think this up, because Muslim students have never learned to think they are only taught to submit. And that is not what freedom is.
We (the people that were raised up under freedom have always been able (free) to speak and think for ourselves.
