Pakistan: Christian girl beaten by teacher and expelled from school over "blasphemous" spelling error on paper

This kind of abuse is not a crisis for Islamabad. Pakistani authorities have demonstrated that they do not care for Christian victims, or Ahmadis, Shi'ites, Afghans, or Indians, but the same Islamic supremacists who commit violence against those groups will ultimately come calling at Islamabad's gates as well. "Girl accused of blasphemy for a spelling error," by Muhammad Sadaqat for the Express Tribune, September 25:

ABBOTTABAD: It may have been a mere misplaced dot that led to accusations of blasphemy against a Christian eighth-grader, whose miniscule error led to her expulsion from school and uproar amongst local religious leaders.
Faryal Bhatti, a student at the Sir Syed Girls High School in Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) colony Havelian, erroneously misspelt a word in an Urdu exam while answering a question on a poem written in praise of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The word in question was ‘laanat’ instead of ‘naat’ – an easy error for a child to make, as the written versions of the words are similar.
According to the school administration and religious leaders who took great exception to the hapless student’s mistake, the error is ‘serious’ enough to fall within the realm of blasphemy, Saturday.
Spelling out her punishment
On Thursday, Faryal’s Urdu teacher was collecting the answer sheets from her students when she noticed the apparently offensive word on her pupil’s sheet. The teacher, Fareeda Bibi, reportedly summoned the Christian girl, scolded her and beat her. Her punishment, however, did not end here. When Faryal’s class fellows learnt of the alleged blasphemy, the teacher brought the principal’s notice to the matter, who further informed the school management.
In the meanwhile, the news spread throughout the colony. The next day, male students of the POF colony school as well as certain religious elements took out a rally, demanding the registration of a criminal case against the eighth-grader and her expulsion from the area.

All this, for a spelling error.

Prayer leaders within the community also condemned the incident in their Friday sermons, asking the colony’s administration to not only take action against Faryal but her entire family. In the wake of the increasing tensions, Managing Director POF Colony Havelian Asif Siddiki called a meeting of colony-based ulemas and school teachers to discuss the situation. The girl and her mother were asked to appear before the meeting, where they explained that it was a mere error, caused by a resemblance between the two words. The two immediately apologised, adding that Faryal had no malicious intentions.

Was this a spelling error, or a deliberate misinterpretation of handwriting?

In a move that was apparently meant to pacify the religious elements clamouring for action against the teenage ‘blasphemer’, the POF administration expelled her from the school on Saturday. Faryal was not the only one who got in trouble for her spelling error, however, as her mother, Sarafeen Bhatti, who was a staff nurse at the POF Hospital Havelian for several years, was immediately transferred to POF Wah Cantonment Hospital.
Decision applauded
While talking to The Express Tribune, Maulana Alla Dita Khateeb of Gol Masjid praised the decision of the POF colony administration, claiming that he had personally seen the answer sheet in question. He further went on to say that he had met the girl himself, who had apologised for the word used in error. Asked whether the incident still fell within the realm of blasphemy and whether Faryal deserved expulsion when she had misspelt the word unintentionally, Khateeb said that although he was unclear about the intentions of the girl, the word she had used was sacrilegious.
The managing director of POF Colony was not available for comment.

Does anyone know what "laanat" and "naat" mean in Urdu? And what was the context. I assume if the girl really was trying to be a smart-alec the details would have been published. So can we see how trivial the mistake was that got all those nut-jobs upset?

No online translators can translate either word. With such significant words one would think they would be known enough to be translated.

Though translators don't work for those two words for some odd reason, Lanat and Naat are explained in other places.

Dunno if Laanat is Lanat but Lanat means ban or curse while Naat means praise.

From an islamic education site:

Lanat or La3an, the word العن literally means in English 'anathematize' (.ie: a ban or curse solemnly pronounced by ecclesiastical authority and accompanied by excommunication; this is the closest meaning in English) or more commonly 'curse'. When someone makes the du3aa of La3an upon a person, they are essentially asking Allah (swt) to withdraw His mercy from that person/people and give them punishment for their evil actions.

Whereas Naat means praise in Urdu (it's hamd in arabic) and is found in sentances about Muhammad.

Naat-e-Rasool-e-Maqbool
praise and extolling of Prophet Muhammad

نعت naat praise
العن Lanat curse

So the girl probably wrote Laanat-e-Rasool-e-Maqbool instead of Naat-e-Rasool-e-Maqbool - or the teacher mistook the urdu N equivalent in girls handwriting for the urdu L equivalent. As the girl wrote Laanat instead of Lanat she obviously intended the meaning of Naat. Her misspelling still had the double "a" in it of the intended word.

They look and sound extremely similar though they have opposite meanings. As you can see it's a very easy mistake for anyone to make.

Any muslim student would have been instructed of their mistake or given an (obscenely) normal islamic pedogogical slaping.

Considering the obvious ease of the error to make it is clear this was intentionally ginned up to create anger against a minority.

What is this girl doing in school anyway? We all know that a girl is only half as smart as a boy. Islam a religion of peace and tolerance? Anyone who intentionally wants to become a Muslim and live under a Muslim system is a fool. Far worse, to be a female Christian living under a Muslim system. Her father needs to look out, if things run normally this young girl is probably targeted for rape, not to mention his wife and any other girls in the family. Isn't it fun living under a Muslim system? And here we find the US and UK going willing down that path. As a father of 2 girls and grandfather of 2 more I aim certainly glad I live in the US

Poor lamb! A Pakistani Christian lady I met recently also declared that although she could speak and understand Urdu, she would never learn to write it properly. Very difficult apparently.

Muslims are hypersensitive about any 'disrespect' for their conman false prophet because they know that the character of Mohammed is the foundation of sand on which the whole stinking slum of Islam is built: http://crombouke.blogspot.com/2010/01/exorcising-mohammed-conman-from-minds.html

Just more violence and terror generated by Islam's malevolent work's righteous theology.

I'm not entirely sure العن sounds like 'lanat'.

It's more like "Al-a'an". "lanat" I imagined (from the English) to sounds like "lan-nut".

"na'at" is ok, that's the right word for it.

I just happen to know the Urdu script, it's not 'very difficult'. It's almost identical to the Arabic script.

So, following the logic of these idiots, Defender of Islam ought to be "expelled' from Islam for his many, many egregious spelling errors...

After all, couldn't he be suspected of "obfuscation" of the "eternal truth of Mohammed and Islam".

More on this later...

Well, hey, then!

You should have no problem answering my question from the Irvine 11 thread, right?

I ask again: When was the last time you stepped into a University classroom in California or Riyadh?

quite correct, I too can undertstand enough urdu as it is similiar to hindi, however writing is a task. If not impossible. It is written in arabic looking chicken scratch instead of either english or the hindi script.

Where the savagery of Islam is on display in a "country" such as Pakistan, No non-Moslem's life is safe.

note the peer pressure affect of "moral" tolerance for brutality: stay in the mosque. be safe.

Could any libtarded lurkers from loonwatch please explain to me WHY such over the top, short tempered, manic "cultures" are a GOOD thing for the West?

Do you really believe such "cultural" behaviours will stop when they are in the West?

What will you do if it's YOUR child that's been accused of blasphemy for a spelling mistake?

This is a CHILD and this pack of raving islamic lunatics is out for her blood and her family's blood for a spelling error. How can you justify defending such madness?

Sounds to me like this was a beating looking for a reason.

Pakiland - the country of lunatics. It is unthinkable that this moronic nation posses 100s of Weapons of mass destruction.

I been following that 'faster than speed of light neutrino' debate, not yet settled, and Islamic sites are already claiming it is all described in Kuran.

These people are really very very sick.

Just think what would have happened if she had refused a "date" with the prophet.

Isabella the Crusader wrote:

............................

I agree. A chance to humiliate and terrify an Infidel child, her family, and her entire community. For Muslims, what's not to like?

God, I hate Islam.

Had this happened in Christian Sunday School in the West, the error probably would have would up in a "Kids Say the Darndest Things!" column in the next newsletter, rather than as cause for *a beating*.

"would up" should, of course, have been "wound up". Good thing that typo won't get me a beating, or expulsion...

If only Muslims could be simply "expelled" from Islam for little spelling mistakes...we would soon be free of the whole problem!

Muslims are lunatics; malevolent, violent psychopaths. And they wonder why they and their abominable death cult are widely reviled.

I did reply back there. I'm regrettably not that frequent updating myself on JW. And I don't see why I should answer that question.

And Istanbul_chick :

It's easy to ignore these things (which is what the civilized world is basically doing) because it's not happening to you or because of the mistaken assumption that it won't come knocking on your door.

What the civilized world doesn't realize is there is nothing to stop this from happening right in its midst. This ideology is spreading across the globe with more and more welcoming it. This false sense of security is causing the complacency that is going to be the doom of the West unless they act now and recognize the problem. For that to happen religion should be stripped of the immunity granted to it from the State and scrutinized. And then only can any action really happen.

No one is going to even acknowledge that Islam is the enemy unless the US revokes the immunity that religion enjoys. The biggest assumption that causes the biggest loophole in both idea and law - 'all religions are peaceful'.
