I sit here and read such words and am just stunned.

How I wish an old online friend was still around. I remember years ago I was making the point about how liberal feminists (especially the celebrity ones!) are silent when it comes to Islam's treatment of women. Right away she chimed in and mentioned this woman - whom I had never heard of, nor of any of her work.

This is what she calls standing up for women against Islam? Laughable.

A "Women's Activist," - more likely, Mavis Leno, a useful "dhimi" - Hollywood, the land of liberal leftist idiots.

Given her long awareness and involvement with the plight of women in Afghanistan, this is truly shocking. Islam's ability to infect the minds and basic objectivity of almost anyone is amazing...

Let's not be to quick to demonize Mavis Leno. If you read Ahmed Rashid's Taliban, you'll learn that Mavis Leno was one of the first and only Americans of any prominence who spoke up against and raise awareness about what the evil of what the Taliban was doing in Afghanistan in the 1990s.

I wish she understood the dangers of Islam for women, but I have to give her far more credit than the average liberal or conservative for recognizing what the Taliban were up to early on.

And remember that their marriage was pre-Islamic -- they were married in or about 595, and he didn't begin his career as a "prophet" until 612. How many "wealthy and powerful" women were there after Islam was established?

Mohammad married his first wife when he was 25 ... 15 years before he received his first revelation at age 40. He started preaching some years after that. And it still would have been some time before one could say that Islam was established as a religion.

So attributing his marriage to a "wealthy and powerful woman" to Islam is an obvious exaggeration and anachronism, as Islam did not exist when he entered marriage. The marriage was more likely for personal profit and ambition, and certainly not for empowerment of women.

Once he did start receiving his "revelations" (or demonic possessions, depending on your perspective), and Islam was established, his pronouncements turned women into sex objects and chattel available for use, misuse and abuse.

One has to be purposely blind and ignorant not to see this.

As expected of the wife of a comedian, she is a bit of comedic herself. Take for example the obligation under the Shari'ah to divorce ones wife, when the wife can't divorce the male. That's one example quite notable. The "beating" is apparently a remediation for divorce, and a prevention of it. Although Christians do the same thing, the Bible certainly doesn't, so she would be wrong if that's what she was meaning by "the Qur'an is more liberal than the Bible".

To keep it simple I suggest Mavis Leno pick up the book "Islam and the Bible--why two faiths collide" By David Goldmann from Moody publishers of Chicago.

In chapter 3,starting on page 80 the book deals with the "status of women" in Islam and its comparisons to the teachings in the Bible's New Testament are laid out side by side so one can easily see the differences. The alas from the various surahs are also noted as are the versus in the Bible.

Mavis's interpretation or statement rings completely hollow when one reads and compares the stark differences between how women are to be treated. I find myself at a complete loss as to how she can possibly make such a statement.

I can only conclude that she drew this ill gotten idea from comments made by Muslim women or men who constantly misrepresent what is clearly written and practiced in the Koran in the practice of taquiya and kitman.

Mavis needs to understand when she is being used, and the only way to possibly do that is to read the Koran,Syrah, and hadiths along with an understanding of sharia as it relates to the treatment and status of women in Islam.

Mavis you were a strong advocate against the vicious Taliban, please don't allow yourself to be a useful idiot of Islamic dawa that was considered the most noble of acts by Mohammed as an alternative to jihad.

Maybe Mrs. Leno should stick to handing her husband the socket wrenches and cans of WD40 whenever he works on his car collection.

I've taught mucho numbers of liberal students and have had numerous conversations with liberal faculty members over the years and when things like facts and common sense and general intelligence come up against leftist ideology, nine times out of ten leftist ideology will win hands down. When I was among Muslim people in the Sudan, they told me many fanciful things about Islam which I felt were suspect. Before going there a second time, I took the trouble to read the Koran. So when they again said strange, deluded things about the kindness of Mohammed, his abolition of slavery or whatever, I could refer them to their "holy book"; with some misgivings, as I didn't want to set them on the path to jihad! And yes, some people there would excuse certain Islamic practices by saying they were not Islamic but "cultural".
So if you don't take the trouble to study, it wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility to assume that people of a certain religion would actually know something about its basic tenets.
In my experience with Muslims,they have either been deluded or they have lied.

I can't think of anything in the Bible that discredits a woman's testimony or impinges upon her rights of inheritance.

Oh, how I hated it when I was trying to explain Islam's role in the treatment of women and then some well-intentioned but ignorant Muslim-defending secular Westerner, in concert with a Muslim present, and with a few other people around, first came up with this "blame the culture, or anything-but-Islam".

Where I live, so many people will defend this lie. But perhaps what Winoceros wrote puts us on a good track of responding; If situations and behavior of self-confessed Muslims who themselves motivate their actions as motivated by Islam, are acknowledged to be anti-women's rights, anti-democratic, and abhorrent, then .....

Is not Islam terribly contaminated by "cultural influences"? Is Islam not therefore terribly and massively misunderstood? Is Islam not therefore terribly or even invalidatingly or even criminally unclear?

Since Islam clearly has a big political component, since it clearly intends to rule states and keep it's laws in states, I like us to compare Islam not to Christianity (and so the Quran to the Bible) but to our Democratic Constitutions. Who must be clear, and when massively-terribly misunderstood, must be augmented, amended, improved.

Muslims and Muslim-defenders who are also Islam-defenders in my experience resist that strongly. I think because they prefer to compare Islam with Christianity because it get's Islam off the hook. And so the Muslim-defenders can excuse Islam and stay friends with the Muslims.

At this point of reasoning to my mind then comes the question: Is there only one true Islam? Or can there be a few diverse legitimate versions of Islam? The Muslims then say that there is only one true Islam and they are prepared to explain it saying; Islam means this, orders this, prohibits that as if there is only one true Islam.

But the whole time Muslim-defenders refer to Islam as if it is mysterious, multi-interpretable, and indeed interpreted in different ways, and indeed by many Muslims as peaceful, no problem for democracy. But it is also tacitly understood and acknowledged by them that there are many "wrong", "culture-contaminated" interpretations of Islam.

I really want to get it out into the open now; If the implication always is that Islam is multi-interpretable and indeed in multiple ways interpreted, why can't we have much more clarity and accountability, Muslims clearly choosing sides?

I hope we evolve towards telling Muslims and Muslim-defenders that in this way increasingly ordinary Muslims simply forfeit all trust and credibility when just saying they are Muslim and believe in Islam. Because "Islam-just-like-that", that is simply far too culture-contaminated, vaque, ambiguous, usable by all sorts of criminals and lunatics.

Let Muslims and Muslim-defenders be forced by logic to specify; how they interpret Islam, what is their version of Islam if possible, and what does it say on all disputed issues, pertaining to democratic principles, like equal rights for women?

I can picture Jay Leno coming on stage with his spiel:

If her argument is based ob the fact that mohammad married a rich & powerful lady then she must be educated that when they got married neither of them were a muslim. The first revelation (allegedly) came to him after their marriage.

Mohammad was a camel driver who got a job with Khadijah, a rich widow businesswoman, after her husband died and left her wealth to manage. Mohammad's job was to drive caravans with goods. He was 15 years younger than Khadija and eventually she decided to marry him when he was 25 and she was 40. When this powerful wife died in 619 at the age of 64, Mohamed was 49. Soon after he married 12 women, the youngest of them, Aisha was 6 years old and he was 53. He "consummated" marriage with her when she was 9 y old and until his death at the age of 63, she remained his favorite wife.

Nowadays a guy who had sex with a girl 9 years old would be imprisoned as that Mormon guy in USA. So would a guy who has 12 wives, which is a privilege of rich Muslims in many Muslims countries. Osama bin Ladin had only 4-5 wives while his father had many more. The women in many Muslim countries are obligated to wear burkha or ate least a hijab and their rights are severely curbed. In Saudi Arabia women can be arrested if they drive!

Perhaps this pretty Jay Leno's wife should go to Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan villages to see how Islam treats women. Yes, there are sometimes exceptional women (like former Pakistani Bhutto who was educated in the West and was killed by the Jihadists), but an average women in sharia-ruled country is lucky to be considered half as much worth as man. In Gaza they recently had a mass marriage of adult men with 6-7 year old girl orchestrated by Hamas. Can such young girls give consent and can one talk about their rights under Islam?

Ignorance is not a bliss but a clear danger when promoted by mass media, which in the US are often whitewashing Islam, which needs serious reform if it wants to be considered as other religions in USA. It is incompatible with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and therefore many Muslim countries that are members of UN refused to sign this declaration.
