The problem with Islam is the damage that it does to minds. We are all products of our upbringing and although Omar may no longer be a Muslim, or he is a 'moderate' Muslim or whatever he calls himself these days, he was still brought up in a Muslim society and still has Mohammed's influences rolling around in his psyche.
The slap he gave was a restrained slap, either because he knew that the cameras were on him, or because his civilised Western brain was conflicting with his barbaric Muslim brain!

You'll notice in the article that the onlookers in Qatar were "shocked to see him slap a woman in public". They were not shocked to have seen him simply slap a woman. Slapping women is obviously done behind closed doors in Qatar and it was in bad form to slap her in public.

This incident clearly reminded me of a shocking incident, I was having a friendly lunch and chat with an acquaintance in the summer of 1988 along with some other friends who also stopped to visit him. He had a very attractive live in girlfriend who appeared to be of Arabic or Middle Eastern decent. Suddenly the phone rang and she was in the way of him reaching for it, so he shoved her out of the way and then slapped her across the face, her reaction was the same as this girl to Omar Sharif's left of what appeared to be an embarrassed smile. It was clear that all of us in attendance were quite shocked and quickly chose to excuse ourselves for the lunch without any comment. I never saw him again, and never wanted to for obvious reasons. I found it shocking, his abrupt, explosive violence and her apologetic acceptance accompanied by what sounded like a lecture in arabic.

I don't know what Omar is, a Christian or a muslim, but to me the whole episode looks like a repeat telecast! I met Omar Shariff at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel years ago when I lived in Beverly Hills. Having cocktails together, Shariff insulted a young man at the table and tried to intimidate me. Since his early success in film, Shariff has suffered from narcissistic delusions. He is an egomaniac and arrogant to the core. Inevitably, this sort of character meets up with someone who pops him one. I don't know about now, but at the time Shariff was an active alcoholic and played tournament bridge.

I always liked Sharif despite his origins(yes i am totally prejudiced now and regard Islam with hatred & Muslims with a mixture of contempt & pity) but I had heard some rumours of his real attitude towards women when travelling overseas.
I could not believe the rumour but they were backed up when he attended some film festival byt a direct witness(an amazed male).

Yet I love the book: Dr Zhivago and had one of the first english copes after it was smuggled out of the USSR and yes i have both versions on DVD but it is amazing how less sympathetic I feel for the Sharif version and I now feel that Julie Christie was lucky in the end.
