There would be no crisis for Islamabad if Fazlullah's attacks were not coming back over the border, but staying on the other side. Pakistan is again attempting to avoid international pressure over its double game by trying to create the impression that, hey, everybody's doing it. "Pakistan wants Afghan action on Taliban cleric," by Qasim Nauman for Reuters, October 17:
ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan said Monday that Afghan and U.S-led forces had failed to hunt down a Taliban cleric responsible for a spate of cross-border raids despite repeated requests from Islamabad, a complaint likely to deepen tension between the neighbors.
The attacks in which militants loyal to Maulvi Fazlullah took part killed about 100 members of Pakistan's security forces, angering the army which faces threats from multiple militant groups.
"We have given locations and information about these groups to the Afghanistan government and ISAF (International Security Assistance Force), but apparently there has been no action," Pakistani army spokesman, Major-General Athar Abbas, told Reuters.
"The problem refuses to go away."
Fazlullah was the Pakistani Taliban leader in Swat Valley, about 100 miles northwest of Islamabad, before a 2009 army offensive forced him to flee.
Also known as FM Mullah for his fiery radio broadcasts, he regrouped in Afghanistan and established strongholds, and poses a threat to Pakistan once again, said Abbas.
Fazlullah, a leading figure in the Pakistani Taliban insurgency, is based in Kunar and Nuristan provinces in Afghanistan, said Abbas. [...]
The Taliban capitalized on a widely criticized government peace deal with the Taliban to take control of Swat, home to more than a million people. In April 2009, the United States termed the agreement an abdication to the Taliban.
Why doesn't Pakistan arrest him when he comes over the border to visit his Taliban brothers in the paki training camps?
?Filial piety, as Hugh Fitzgerald puts it?
If Pakistan gives the US drone-handlers Fuzzyloola's co-ordinates, he can be turned into a DNA sample in double-quick time. Whatya waitin for, muttheads??
Clowns! (Honestly, if Adam and Eve had been Pakistani, we'd still be drawing pictures on cave walls!) :))
I really don't get why the US takes this stuff from Pakistan.
They pay billions in aid, while Pakistan admonishes the US and burns US flags and supports and sponsors terrorism.
India has been insisting since forever that Pakistan is a terror state. The Pakistan Army and the ISI are the core from which terrorism emanates.
Unfortunately for Pakistan the facade has fallen. The rabid beast in their backyard is turning on them. Pakistan tries to convince US it's trying to take on terror, while trying to convince the terrorists it doesn't really support the US. The problem is, none of these sides believe the story given to them.
Which is why Pakistan is effectively doomed. It's a matter of time before another Musharraf appears and seizes power by force.
I cannot understand US policymakers. India is a natural ally to take on terrorism, as opposed to Pakistan who clearly has the poorest record. Although what is irritating is India's refusal to take an active and un-ambiguous stand against terror. India always tries to take a morally high or idealistic ground in its foreign policy.
The US should use India as a partner in the war on terror. India is, after all, unfinished business. Only when the free world is united can terrorism be defeated and civilization prevail.
You observed "what is irritating is India's refusal to take an active and un-ambiguous stand against terror." 'Terror' being, of course, 'the Jihad'.
India is currently hamstrung/ crippled/ handicapped by a very large and aggressive Mohammedan Fifth Column - something like 127 million people, at least, comprising at least 13 percent of the population - which votes en bloc; this enables said Fifth Column to blackmail and/ or bribe Indian politicians - as they are already doing, also, in Australia and very blatantly and openly in the UK.
I would also guess that mafia-style tactics of behind-the-scenes intimidation and/ or blackmail are used on Indian politicians to make them do what Muslims want; not to mention the fact that Muslims would, I suspect, be as deeply infiltrated into the institutions - particularly law enforcement, judiciary, civil service and politics - as they have already managed to achieve in the USA and other western countries. Muslims are programmed to seek out the centres of power, the gatekeeping and chokepoint positions.
