Raymond Ibrahim: Islam’s Predictability - Apostasy, Execution, and Lies

As one ponders the fate of Yousef Nadarkhani, the Iranian pastor on death row for refusing to renounce Christianity, it is well to reflect that, for all the talk that Islam is perpetually “misunderstood,” it is actually immensely predictable and consistent; not only do its patterns cross time and space, but their manifestations are often identical.

Consider: Muslims have no qualms proudly declaring the particulars of their religion for all and sundry to hear—no matter how absurd or how it reflects on them or Islam. Thus talk about the legitimacy of adult “breast feeding,” pedophilia as marriage, insistence that the earth is flat, commands not to yawn (lest Satan flies down one’s throat), the salutary effects of drinking prophet urine, the need to execute the “infidel” Mickey Mouse, and any number of other oddities and perversities are regularly evoked by Islam’s sheikhs and clerics throughout the Muslim world.

There is, of course, one caveat: whenever Islam is vulnerable vis-à-vis the international infidel, as it is today, caution is called for regarding the declaration of those things that might backfire, things that might make Islam look like a threat—things that might incline other civilizations to go on a preemptive offensive, while they have the advantage.

Jihad is a perfect example. Despite the fact that “holy war” to conquer infidel territories and spread Islamic hegemony is an ironclad aspect of the religion—an integral part of its history, its doctrines, its very being—Muslims are careful not to evoke it around infidels.

Even Islamist organizations, including al-Qaeda, while regularly pontificating to fellow Muslims about how Islam demands the subjugation of non-Muslims—simply because they are infidels—always back-peddle when communicating with the West, opting instead to use language and paradigms that comport with Western sensibilities.

It is in this manner that many in the West have come to believe Islam’s nonstop aggression around the globe is a byproduct of “grievances,” of “Zionism,” of U.S. “foreign policy,” of anything and everything, not Islam.

Now consider how this identical pattern—Muslims proudly displaying Islam’s particulars, only to deny them once they become counterproductive—has played out in the Iranian Christian pastor saga:

First, Iran’s Supreme Court made it unequivocally clear that apostasy is punishable by death. Why shouldn’t it? All legitimate schools of Islamic law—including Shia—mandate death for the apostate, in accordance with their prophet’s command: “Whoever changed his Islamic religion, kill him.”

Then, to the chagrin of Iran’s government, which likely expected to get away with its barbarities unnoticed, the Western mainstream media actually picked up the story, resulting in widespread condemnation from Western politicians, many highlighting Iran’s hypocrisy, thereby undermining its constant calls for “justice” and “humanitarianism” in its attempt to demonize Israel.

So what did the taqiyya masters of Shia Iran do? In the face of all the documented evidence otherwise, they decided to change the whole story, to use language intelligible to West: now the pastor is supposedly being executed because he is a “Zionist traitor,” a “rapist” and “extortionist,” a “brothel owner,” etc.—all epithets Iran knows will resonate with the West.

Of course, none of these charges exist in Iran’s Supreme Court ruling, which clearly and unequivocally asserts that pastor Yousef Nadarkhani

is convicted of turning his back on Islam, the greatest religion the prophesy of Mohammad at the age of 19. He has often participated in Christian worship and organized home church services, evangelizing and has been baptized and baptized others, converting Muslims to Christianity. He has been accused of breaking Islamic Law that from puberty (15 years according to Islamic law) until the age of 19 the year 1996, he was raised a Muslim in a Muslim home. During court trials, he denied the prophecy of Mohammad and the authority of Islam. He has stated that he is a Christian and no longer Muslim.

Thus, just like all the other Muslims who boldly and proudly declare the things of Islam, except when they are counterproductive to Islam’s wellbeing—apostasy like jihad is equally codified in Sharia, and equally detested in the West—those who unashamedly sought to execute an apostate in Iran cringed and dissembled, as usual.

For anyone following the patterns of Islamic behavior, this is all too predictable—almost as predictable as the fact that many wishful thinkers in the West will happily accept Iran’s lies, simply to validate their own worldview, despite all the evidence otherwise.

An excellent article! And, of course, transparency concerning info about Islam's abuses and the fact that people should be made aware of Islam's agenda through education are combined in JW's presence on the Internet.

Thanks!

Islamic culture is based around a twisted sense of honor. Muslims consider themselves to be naturally better than the rest of humanity and will tolerate no one who challenges that belief. I wrote an article at http://thenewknighthood.blogspot.com regarding this issue several months ago, and as events continue to unfold I see further confirmation that this warped honor is at once a dangerous instigator and a severe limitation on the Muslim world. The fact that anyone would have the free will (which, remember, doesn't exist in Islam) to resist the siren song of Mohammed is utterly alien to them, and that is why conspiracy theories are so popular in the Muslim world. Muslims consider themselves as perpetual victims and also believe that no one would honestly choose to not become a Muslim or convert from Islam without bribery or threats from an external force hostile to Islam.

Well put, Jedishafyern.

. .your name is is a freaking tongue-twister though. .you must be Welsh. Nothing wrong with that, but you folks banjax the alphabet with riddlefilled nouns.

Islam has only survived and propagated lies, deceit, taqiyya, force, thuggery, intimidation, threats, superstition,... all criminal behaviors. force the followers of Islam to abandon this criminal behavior and Islam disappears from the face of this earth!!!

Great expose of the Iranian Inquisition, Rabbi Ray.
I just finished reading a book that garnered five stars from 33 reviewers on Amazon, lent to me by a Christian colleague: "Engaging Islam" by Georges Houssney. It was excellent, though I skimmed the sections on missionary advice. There were some good insights into Western misconceptions of Islam that someone who grew up in an Islamic milieu can decipher best.

"..the salutary effects of drinking prophet urine,.."
Urine, sweat, snot, ablution water, sputum... you name it!
That's the Glory of Islam!

David,

Islam is an honor/shame culture. They are fine with executing an innocent person who only changed his religion, but they cannot stomach being abhorred by the West. So when the apostate's fate got attention from the West, they cringe because they are embarrassed. Killing apostates is no problem for them, embarrassment is a problem.

Raymond Ibrahim is correct; The Iranian regime is obfuscating about the punishment for apostasy in this case in order to persuade westerners that Islam is not a threat, not a bad thing. Their ruse here is along the lines of 'You ignorant westerners don't think we'd kill a guy just for apostasy do you?' We've seen these kinds of tactics from Iran before, and, indeed, they've previously, in not so many words but in essence, admitted that they are doing this to protect Islam in the larger scheme of things, in the international context.

I would add explicitly that this deceptive distraction technique on their part indicates, to those of us who've been following these kinds of tactics for many years now, a use of propaganda designed to facilitate the progression of Islam in the West. It would be difficult to believe that the Iranian regime actually genuinely cares about Western notions of freedom of belief and expression, and so forth. But they do care about Muslims in the West and the Islam project in the West. By fabricating and publishing these wild post hoc allegations of rape and so forth, they are attempting to ease the Islamic da'wa and propaganda projects in the West which are part of the larger demographic jihad. The polls show that Muslims worldwide want to keep western values out of Muslim countries. These same Muslims in Muslim countries see what is happening in the West, and they want the Islam project to succeed.

Think through the various scenarios by which this might have worked in this case. Here's one possibility: First, Iranian regime tries to execute an apostate for the same reason that apostates have always been executed, i.e., to protect and maintain Islam. Then international western media gets a hold of the story and publishes it, attracting some negative attention in the West. Muslim groups in the west, connected to the Iranian regime, contact the Iranian regime and explain how this story is playing in the west and how it is creating problems for da'wa and Islam's image in the west. Iranian regime takes this feedback and then adjusts the story to something that is more palatable to the west, fabricating a bunch of allegations in an attempt to overshadow the apostasy charge and basically confuse and complicate matters.

It is interesting to contrast this case with the Muhammad cartoon case. In the cartoon case, the issue was blasphemy, or, as some westerners would describe it, hate speech. In that case, the Muslims in Denmark took messages back to the Islamic regimes in the Muslim world, and then helped to work on a strategy in which the cartoon "crisis" would be used as an opening for the pushing of Islamic blasphemy laws in the West.

Note that in the cartoon case, there was no attempt to hide Islam's blasphemy laws, which most Muslims support in one form or another. There were some attempts by Muslims in the West to reframe the blasphemy laws as something else in western terms, e.g., hate speech, racism, etc., but there was no attempt to hide the Islamic notion that those who criticize or mock Islam and Muhammad must be criminally prosecuted and punished severely. This is one restriction that is simply too valuable, too critically important, for Muslims to pretend is something they reject or which does not exist in Islam. They need it. Islam will fall without it. And Muslims can make use of two major sources of sympathy for Islamic blasphemy laws in the west, namely from among (i) some religious moderates and non-religious secularists who believe there should be "hate speech" laws protecting Muslims' beliefs from criticism and ridicule, and (ii) some Christian hard-liners who think blasphemy laws still ought to be in place and either agree that these laws should be extended to protect Islamic religion or at least are willing to cooperate pragmatically with Muslims on this issue so that they can all be protected from the dreaded blasphemies directed against their respective religions. Strategically, then, Muslims are relatively safe to go ahead and push for Islamic blasphemy laws in the west, under whatever label, provided they don't try to do too much too soon. Islam ultimately stands or falls depending on whether or not, or the extent to which, it is protected from criticism and ridicule. It would be counterproductive for the Islamic standpoint to have this large and growing Muslims demographic in the west--this huge and most promising investment in the Islam project--only to see it compromised and defeated with the Muslims' beliefs shattered by unfettered non-Muslim questioning, criticism, mockery, and rejection of Islam.

Propaganda and image are so important to Islam that the Iranian regime recognizes, realistically, pragmatically, they have to at least pretend temporarily to distance themselves from sharia penalties such as for adultery, or apostasy, etc., in order to protect Islam's image.

Excellent article from Raymond Ibrahim.

It is just the same with Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani—the woman under sentence of death by stoning in Iran.

At first they were upfront that she was sentenced to be stoned to death for "adultery" (even though she is a widow).

Later, when that became something of an international embarrassment, they backpedaled and claimed that Ashtiani was somehow involved in her husband's killing—even though she has not only not been convicted of such, but not even so charged.

I do not understand. Allah is all powerful, merciful creator, why does he need humans creatures to enforce his laws? If someone disobeys Allah will he not be punished when he dies? I can understand people executing murderers as a measure to protect other people from the killer but if Allah is all powerful why does he need a human to execute a apostate? The offence is only against Allah not you or me. He will be punished in the next life. Or is Islam not the true religion of Allah and needs to be defended by humans? If Islam is true would not Allah send is his angels to administer his will or just wait and send the apostate to hell when he dies.
