French magazine that was firebombed over Muhammad cartoon hits back

Hebdo.jpg

Our readers won't bomb us for posting an offensive image.

Offensive, ain't it? But freedom of speech is hollow without the possibility of offending. "Offense" is in the eye of the beholder: one day, it's a cartoon of Muhammad. The next day, it might be denying Muhammad's standing as a prophet as a matter of Christian, Hindu, Jewish, or atheist belief.

Attempting to eradicate "offensive" material because it could hurt people's feelings results in an increasingly sensitized and fearful society, where being "offended" is suddenly a much bigger deal. It ultimately serves to shield those who are calling for the censorship from criticism -- after all, they've been the victims of something "offensive." That is the idea, under the pretext of achieving a "nicer" society (if only "for me, but not for thee"), though the ironic side effect is that ever more severe consequences accompany the possibility of causing offense. That's not very nice. (See also: Richard Landes' essay on "politeness" versus civility, posted here in August.)

Those who sought to silence Charlie Hebdo have committed a major "own goal." The magazine's staff has nothing to lose but its principles, and backing down would hand the thugs a victory, and invite more firebombings to intimidate members of the media into self-censorship.

"Charlie Hebdo front cover depicts Muslim man kissing cartoonist," by Kim Willsher for the Guardian, November 8:

Its offices have been firebombed, its website hacked, its Facebook page suspended for 24 hours and its staff targeted with death threats, so you might have thought the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo would have tried – just for a while – to avoid upsetting anyone.
Mais non! After provoking all the above with last week's special edition "guest edited" by the prophet Muhammad, entitled Charia Hebdo, which took pot-shots at radical Islam, the publication is set to raise a few more hackles with this week's edition, published on Wednesday.
On the front page of the latest edition is a drawing of a male Charlie Hebdo cartoonist passionately kissing a bearded Muslim man, under the headline: L'Amour plus fort que la haine (love is stronger than hate).
In the background of the cartoon, signed Luz, are the ashes of the magazine's offices, completely destroyed in the Molotov cocktail attack last week.
Unlike the previous edition, which featured a front page carton of the prophet and a speech bubble reading "100 lashes if you don't die of laughter", there is no suggestion that the character on the magazine cover is Muhammad.
After the firebombing, French Muslim groups who had been highly critical of Charlie Hebdo, condemned the destruction of its offices. Dalil Boubakeur head of the Paris Mosque, told journalists: "I am extremely attached to the freedom of the press, even if the press is not always tender with Muslims, Islam or the Paris Mosque".
The editor of Charlie Hebdo, Stéphane Charbonnier, said at the time: "We thought the lines had moved and maybe there would be more respect for our satirical work, our right to mock. Freedom to have a good laugh is as important as freedom of speech."
Since then, the magazine's staff have been given a temporary home in the offices of France's leading leftwing daily newspaper Libération, which has also been subject to threats from the Turkish hackers who are said to have pirated Charlie Hebdo's site.
Luz, the cartoonist, refused to condemn extremists for the attack.
"Let's be cautious. There's every reason to believe it's the work of fundamentalists, but it could just as well be the work of two drunks," he wrote afterwards.

Ah, humorists! They tend to be the most sensible people on the planet while their teeth are the sharpest.

French magazine that was firebombed over Muhammad cartoon hits back
..................................

Oh my God! I coughed coffee all over my computer screen!

The caption reads, "Love is Much Stronger than Hate"—which might be considered a fairly standard response to being firebombed, except that the accompanying illustration shows Charlie Hebdo cartoonist Luz in the midst of a very sloppy tongue kiss with a traditional Muslim.

By the way, here is Luz, standing defiantly in the bombed-out wreckage of the Charlie Hebdo offices:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZuaWrViJwts/TrEWj7Bte-I/AAAAAAAABnA/GKOrr9fbB6M/s400/Luz.jpg

Now, some anti-Jihadists might find the idea of frenching (pun intended) a Jihadist offensive (although most of us, I imagine, get the joke). Still, will Charlie Hebdo get threats from anti-Jihadists? I very much doubt it.

But Muslims will probably "go postal" over this.

I have the greatest admiration for everyone connected to Charlie Hebdo. The rock of Western freedom of speech and freedom of the press—disgusting spit-swap and all!

'Luz' means 'light', as in the kind that shines.

I hope this really chaps some mahoundian a$$.

good for them. they are brave!! keep up the good work!!!!
M

But Muslims will probably "go postal" over this.

Don't be so sure, Graven. I say this cuz Moslems are sexy people, with the fire burning in their crotch every bit as hot as in their pious assertive ain't gonna take no bullcrap no more minds.

*** 56:13 ***

Looking at the holy Ko-Ran and authoritative Hah-Deaths, we see a belief system infused with sex. Rapes, sex slaves, little boys hidden like pearls soaking in the steamy showers near Joe Paterno's office, 6-yr old wives, 9-yr old hottie lovers, goat sex fatwas, grown men sucking the Holy Prophet's nipples in public.

With all this established in the record and acknowledged by them, my guess is that millions of Moslem Men may now actually be masturbating to this magazine cover. These guys always did wanna piece of the Infidel to teach 'em a lesson.

Maybe they're thinking a tough love lesson. Rough sex, I think they call it.

Vive le Charlee 'Ebdo!!

Vive le Resistance!

in addition to having guts the Charlie Hebdo guys definitely have panache. Logically, they also should have gotten more clearheaded in the process.

"Offense" is in the eye of the beholder...

In Islam's case: "Offense" is in the eye of the beheader...

This site is going from PG to R rated. Then again, it's in the eye of the beholder. Mohammed could be getting artificial respiration.

Love it,love it,love it! Charlie Hebdo guys are AWESOME!!!
You rock!!! KUDOS to you!!! Keep it up! I'm behind you, I used to dislike the French, but Islam has given me a taste for the French! YEAH!

I am the work of two drunks. Bombing the magazine was a deliberate effort of two crazy people. Oh, wait.... But at least mine weren't Muslims. So what excuse do they have?

Hey! That note above? It was written by my evil twin. It's not about me. We had different parents.

muslims long have learned a lesson that when they intimidate we back up. this is exactly is when we should stand up to them.
N

Hope we'll have more and more of these fighters against the evil in Europe. Excellent Job!!!!!!!

II wonder where you are IMF? For me the site seems to be up. I see the site, I don't get a 404 or anything like that. I can navigate within the site. I'm in the USA; perhaps it is different in different geographical areas.

This site is going from PG to R rated.

So, now it's that stating the truth, in the form of acknowledged facts, is porno?

Geller said The truth is the new hate speech. I guess certain truths get an X-rating, too.

Viva la résistance!

Mohammed and Charlie sitting in a tree...

then comes.... beheading.

Gives a different meaning to falling head over heels.

Well done. I guess, not all the french are ankle grabbers for izzelame.

A piece of advice to Charlie Hebdo:
Don't you ever draw prophet Muhammad without reading the quran and the hadith. Then, and only then, will you be able to get the right... picture!
http://crossmuslims.blogspot.com/2010/05/drawing-muhammad-dessiner-mahomet.html

Oh dear!!! You really want any (infidel) cartoonist kissing any Mohammedan? How disgusting! A better cartoon would have been the Muslim in the picture kissing Mr allah's rasool, Mohammed. That would have shown them.

I hope the US Congress will consider listing "Charlie Hebdo Fries" on their cafeteria menu

"the magazine's staff have been given a temporary home in the offices of France's leading leftwing daily newspaper Libération,"
Sheltered by a leftwing daily newspaper?
Encouraging.

"Turkish Hacker Group Threatens to Attack Libération if it Continues to Publish Charlie Hebdo Cartoons"
..........................

I knew it was only a matter of time before Muslims started threatening Libération, as well.

Luckily, Libération seems to be standing tough with Charlie Hebdo. Kudos to both publications!

The French special forces and police should 'stake out' the homes of the leading lights in 'Charlie Hebdo' and 'Liberation', and the offices of 'Liberation', and a few of the major newsagencies selling the magazine.

Wait and see how many would-be jihadists come sneaking and lurking and loitering around...

And if I were the editors of 'Charlie Hebdo' and of 'Liberation', I would ask the police to basically treat *me* as a 'goat':, to see if we couldn't draw allah's fanatical Enforcers out into the open.

The satirical gentlemen should don flak jackets/ bullet-proof vests, pop a screamer alarm into the pants pocket, and take a few lessons in unarmed combat; or even quietly arrange with the cops to be allowed to carry a concealed weapon (plus taking a crash course in basic use of same).

Shoutout to 'Undaunted' - why don't you email the address of your blog to these two French gentlemen, the editors of Charlie Hebdo and of 'Liberation'...and ask it to be passed to 'Luz' as well? ?

Ironically, if the two newspaper editors and their artists and the police and special forces are clever enough about it, the passivity with which, on the whole, the French have greeted Mohammedan shenanigans thus far, will work in their favour; the Muslims - not expecting the French to do anything real in response to Mohammedan violence and threats - will go too far, try to take the bait...and then BANG! the trap will snap shut.

Ideally, all such Mohammedans drawn to the 'bait' would be simply stripped of French citizenship (if they had it; mere 'residents' and illegals wouldn't even require this), and deported (why feed them in jail? just sentence them to Life in the miserable open-air jail that is Dar Al Islam...with no prospect of ever being allowed back in to the lands of the non-Muslims).

OT. Hello Robert. I have tried to send a message to you a few times, but there seems to beca problem getting through.
Cheers,
fightback

Have you tried using the "Contact" box on Jihad Watch's homepage, Fight Back? If you scroll down on the left hand side you will find it.

Of course, you may or may not hear back. I've sent messages several times over the past few years—sometimes I get a response, sometimes not.

I'm OK with that—Robert Spencer is one very busy guy.
