Well, here's the difference:

In fact, a civilized society must have a measure of security. People in high-crime, high-unemployment areas complain about police harassment and the lack of job opportunities. They don't seem to connect the fact that high crime drives out businesses, and that their choice may be a very visible police presence or continued lack of opportunity...

But, I haven't forgotten your statement. Even worse than random violence is targeted violence. The Boko Haram losers have targeted anything that smacks of commerce, education, or individual freedom. This actually has a history in Islam, which preaches the violent enforcement of religious and philosophical orthodoxy. Boko Haram will absolutely stop any progress or individual freedom. They cannot coexist with a civil society. The choice is to eradicate the sect or suffer eternal oppression.

I favor civilized solutions where possible, but sometimes a civilized society must adopt barbaric methods, or suffer extinction. Are we really more civilized to pull our punches in cases where the alternative choice is submission to barbarians?

That's not true. Our news entertainers talk about murder all the time. Presidential campaigns have been partially based on the breakdown of order in our inner cities. But, like detritus dropping from a forest, you put humans in a place, a certain amount of murder is a natural byproduct. Rape and robbery, too.

But those are interpersonal crimes.

With our wise friends at Boko and so many other places, these are explicitly political murders, done for the express purpose of imposing a belief system, bringing a specified order to things, a form of cashless gubmint that can just afford a knife, a rifle and a fuse.

Ebonystone, according to Steven Pinker's 2011-book on the Decline of Violence and according to UN-statistics a clear picture emerges; in the whole West violence per capita is declining, especially the last 2 decades. Only 1 in 200 Americans will die murdered nowadays. Although many countries do not report crimes well, often because victims do not trust police, it seems sure that in the rest of the world, outside the West, violence still is a lot higher per capita, especially in Sub-saharan Africa.

And any way, reporting these crimes done by people inspired by Islam are important to report anyway, because the question before us should be; If we abhor violence, what then is the influence of Islam on it, is it beneficial (causing diminishing violence), neutral or detrimental (causing more violence then there would be without it).

And here again, by the admission of the perpetrators themselves, clear clues, evidence is presented of violence perpetrated by Muslims through the influence of Islam. So Islam does seem to stand in the way of peace and security.

demsci, 1 in 200 Americans? You leave out of account that the murder rate is far lower than that in most parts of America, and higher than that in neighborhoods with high concentrations of people who suffer from unfortunate social pathologies with complex historical roots.

There is no civilized solution with Boko Haram. They have to be wiped out to the very last person, and any cleric and imam who supports them has to be executed. That is the way to wipe out a hideous ideology, because if it isn't wiped out, it will go on killing in cold blood.

We know what is happening here in the West. Every new day that dawns means seeing more hijabs than on the previous day. France is 10% Muslim, Britain 4% Muslim, Holland 8% Muslim. And only in 1956, a mere 55 years ago when Elvis became big, the Muslim population of Western Europe was little over 1% of what it is now, and Lebanon was more than 60% Christian. We all know what became of that.

Boko Haram, which in August bombed the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria, is the gravest security threat to Africa's most populous nation and is gaining prominence despite efforts by the military and police to stamp it out. A security agency crackdown, which human rights activists say has left innocent civilians dead, could be winning the insurgency even more supporters.

Now, Nigeria has a typical third-world police force, and I have no doubt that they could do a better job of avoiding civilian casualties.

That being said, though, you hear *exactly* the same complaints when it comes to state-of-the-art police and military work, as with Israel, the United States, or NATO.

The fact is, the police are *not* targeting civilians, and the Jihadists are.

And yet—the Jihadists are gaining even more supporters. Might that be because all too many of Nigeria's Muslims *share the goals* of Boko Haram? Isn't this, indeed, the *exact same pattern* we see over so much of the Muslim world?

Ebonystone, I really respect your comments—but this is just silly.

This reminds me of people who claim that Fascism wasn't that much of a threat during WWII, then go on to quote road fatality statistics.

Boko Haram *is growing* in Nigeria. They and their fellow Jihadists have already seen Shari'ah imposed in the Muslim north, and are trying to force its spread in the Christian and animist south.

The Shari'ah is so bad that victims of rape and incest have been sentenced to *stoning*. If Boko Haram and its comrades have their way, those stonings will be carried out.

They will; not stop until Nigeria looks like Somalia or Afghanistan under the Taliben.

I am not minimizing the violence in some cities—how can I? I live in Oakland, California. But what Islam has in mind will dwarf even the most violent of gang- or street-crime.

Boko Haram has murdered police officers on numerous occasions; engineered a huge prison-break of over 700 inmates, as well as a smaller break that freed 14; have assassinated politicians and political candidates, ave killed journalists and "moderate" Islamic clerics; have bombed polling places and political party offices, and attempted to bomb election rallies; have bombed churches and universities; and have bombed the United Nations.

Somehow, I doubt even the most violent city in the West has statistics to match this...
