According to other media reports, her arms were also broken.
Reporters Without Borders said "there is no other solution" but to hold off on sending female journalists to Egypt.

I've said before that Egypt is a failed state, on the order of a Pakistan, and is on its way to becoming a Somalia. The seemingly endless reports of female demonstrators and journalists being raped, assaulted, and sexually assaulted only seems to support the impression that Egypt is descending completely into animalistic lawlessness and depravity. Unfortunately, there simply aren't enough secularists and non-Muslims in Egypt to counteract this trend. Islam's many-centuries-long demolition of Egypt is almost complete.

Perhaps Mona has 'sensitivity' issues towards men. But her Wiki page says she's on the board of Progressive Muslim Union of North America, though that board has 'sensitivity' issues with itself, got disbanded over a woman leading prayers at the mosque. Two years later, they're trying again. I don't hold much hope for them, as I've read the book. It leaves me cold, and deeply skeptical, unless something really big happens in Islam, like intense 'sensitivity' training for their men and imams towards women to stop treating them like 'raw meat', and hate 'non-believers' in their miserable creed... It is infinitely unlikely they can change, as "Allah/Mohammed" willed it.

Islamic Egypt - like every other Islamic country - is unsafe for ALL women and girls, full stop.
Unsafe for Coptic girls, who keep on being seized and raped and brutalised and 'converted' to Islam - and sometimes 'married' to their rapists, but sometimes sold into prostitution, and simply dumped.
Unsafe for the Muslim girls, since FGM is commanded by the Shafiite school of Islamic law, which obtains in Egypt: Shafiite law says that 'cutting out the clitoris' is **obligatory**.
'Honor' murders are routinely practised in Egypt, as in every other Islamic country and 'community' - Nonie Darwish discusses this in her book on sharia, 'Cruel and Usual Punishment'.
Islam programs men from an early age both to despise and to fear women.
It teaches men to treat them violently - to beat a woman who is even *suspected* of potential insubordination.
And contempt and fear are the motivators for murder; and if a man murders a woman, all he has to do is claim that she committed 'zina', or dishonored him, in order to get off scot free.
If he rapes a woman, all he has to do is swear that he didn't, and then ,since in cases involving sexual misconduct *her* testimony is not admissible in court, nor that of any other woman who might have witnessed the assault, he gets off scot free...while *she* will suffer the punishment for zina, which may mean flogging, or being locked up in prison (Afghanistan, Pakistan), or ...being stoned to death by an ecstatically howling turned-on male mob, or...being savagely 'honor' murdered by her own male kin (quite possibly with incestuous rape thrown in as part of the punishment).
Islam turns men into the human equivalent of 'killer roosters' who would rather kill a female, than mate with her; or who will kill, after mating.
The opening gambit of the Scheherazade story shows the 'logic' of the Islamic attitude towards women - the only way to be quite, quite sure of total control, is to take a virgin girl as wife and then, on the morning after the 'wedding' night, murder her.
