U.K.: 3500 girls in London at risk for female genital mutilation each year

The elephant in the room here is the role of Islamic jurisprudence in perpetuating the practice:

“Hanbalis hold that circumcision of women is not obligatory but sunna [commendable according to the word or example of Muhammad, but not obligatory], while Hanafis consider it a mere courtesy to the husband.” – Umdat al-Salik e4.3.

The Shafi’i school of jurisprudence, which is present or dominant in many of the countries mentioned below, holds it to be obligatory.

As this report notes, the girls’ risk is heightened by the fear of addressing the subject over the possibility of being branded a “racist,” but the cruelly ironic result is a racist double standard: if there were not cultural “sensitivities” clouding the issue, the practice would be eradicated “yesterday,” as it ought to be.

More than three thousand London girls are at risk of genital mutilation every year, experts warned today.

The report by black and ethnic minority women’s organisation Imkaan found that in the city 3,500 baby girls are born every year to mothers who have suffered female genital mutilation, and therefore are at risk themselves. This is an increase of 65 per cent in 10 years.

Imkaan is calling for all school teachers to be trained to help girls who are facing violence and is calling on David Cameron to tackle the issue.

Marai Larasi, director of Imkaan, said: “It is not acceptable that in 2011 many girls and women living in Britain face extreme, violent threats to their safety and even to their lives. These issues are neglected because of fears of being labelled at best culturally insensitive and at worst racist.

Tragically true:

“There would be outrage and a national scandal if this were happening to little white girls. Every girl should be protected, no matter her background.”

The report’s authors said girls from African families, as well as Afghan, Turkish, South Asian, Kurdish, Arab and Irish traveller families are among those who could be at risk, and stressed that education for health professionals is needed to tackle “a dangerous postcode lottery of support services for girls and women should they try to find help”.

The report also noted that hundreds of women could fall victim to forced marriage every year. The Forced Marriage Unit dealt with 330 cases of women and girls at risk of forced marriage in London last year.

    Any British child who suffers FGM in Britain or out the parents should be put in prison and then deported id applicable. Oh, wait a minute, I forgot, all cultures are equal. Never mind.

    As a father of two daughters I would call any father who allows his daughter to undergo this “procedure” a coward and an abuser. I thought they believed in God? How could they allow God’s creation to be “improved” by them? Looks to me like they might not be as close to God as they claim.

    A couple of posters have already addressed this, but this is the sort of thing that *drives me nuts*.

    Even a report as clear-eyed and honest as this one has to throw in the reference to “Irish Traveller families”. Hey, there may be one or two African Christians or animists at risk in this group as well.

    Girls from other groups may have some risk of not receiving a proper education or of forced marriage”I had an adult literacy student who was a young Gypsy woman who had not regularly attended school much after the age of twelve.

    But let’s face it”the main thing that unites “Afghan, Turkish, South Asian, Kurdish, [and] Arab” families *is Islam*.

    Irish Travellers are not subjecting their daughters to FGM. This is just another conflation”even in this report”to avoid the ever-present accusations of “racism”.

    Hard to believe this is true. Any person who is afraid to try to stop, if he can, or at least speak out against this stupid Islamic outrage against girls simply because he is afraid of being called culturally insensitive or racist deserves spit and a hard kick in the @$$.
    Fear of being called a racist for standing against religious or cultural insanity is an extremely shameful fear. IMO being called a racist for doing the right thing is essentially a badge of honor. I would have nothing but respect for any individual who suffers this meaningless slur in the service of justice.

    I live in a major metropolitan area in the northern Great Plains of the USA.

    They are being warned by their superiors, at the risk of losing their jobs and pensions. (This is an uber-liberal BLUE state, rife with multiculturalistic ethics, PC policies and practices.) I found out two ways, 1.) through an IT professional consultant who has worked on the systems of municipal governments and has been told mutitudinous anecdotal examples through employees “confiding” in him *off the record* and 2.) from local Somalis themselves, in an informal setting.

    What prevents the secondary witness from going forward is a refusal to betray the trust of the people who have confided in him, and a fear of the loss of business that would result. He can’t “name names” without a whole lot of people out for blood – namely, his. And this can be a dangerous place.

    I don’t know the exact penalty because nobody has ever been prosecuted. But, yes, FGM is very much against the law and attracts very severe penalties. A poster I once saw in a Muslim-area police station stated that a parent could be jailed for seven years for “planning to take your female child to another country for the purpose of FGM”.

    The issue is not what the law permits or the severity of the penalty. The issue is that so far no culprit has ever been caught. The experts confess that they would love to catch a cutter and make an example of her. But so far, they never have.

    I imagine that this is because the guilty communities close ranks and refuse to betray the perpetrators. The girls are intimidated into silence. The police, the social workers and the medical profession are stumped over how to collect the evidence. I hope “training schoolteachers” will work, but I suspect it will prove inadequate.

    Counterjihad2012, I’m afraid it’s a little more serious than that.

    Four of Mohammed’s thirteen wives (Rayhana, Juwairiya, Safiya and Mariya) began as his slaves. They only “chose” to marry him in the sense that the alternative would have been death. Before anyone protests my arithmetic… Yes, Rayhana and Mariya were technically only “concubines”… but how does this reduction in conjugal rights make the situation better?

    A fifth wife (Ayesha) was too young to give informed consent. She did not even know she was married until the minute she was left alone with Mohammed in the nuptial chamber.

    A sixth wife (Hind) was not exactly forced to marry Mohammed, but she gave a string of excuses to refuse him. He pressured her relentlessly, and in the end she consented because she knew that one didn’t argue with Mohammed. On their wedding day she was still pregnant with her beloved first husband’s child!

    A seventh wife (Zeynab) married Mohammed freely and proudly after Mohammed’s son Zayd considerately divorced her. What is less well known is that Zeynab had never wanted to marry Zayd and said so quite bluntly. Mohammed produced a revelation from Allah to advise her that she had no choice because when Allah and his prophet arranged a marriage, it wasn’t the bride’s business to protest.

    An eighth wife (Hafsa) was happy enough to marry Mohammed, but he was really sneaky about the courtship. He actively warned off her two alternative suitors, one of whom was very willing, before moving in so fast that Hafsa, who was newly widowed and only 19, had no time to look around for a young bridegroom who might have made her his only wife. So much for Mohammed’s spouses all being desperate, impoverished widows!

    As an aside, did you know that Kinana ibn al-Rabi was Safiya’s second husband? We know that she married him voluntarily because the wedding was after Mohammed had slaughtered all her male relatives at Khandak, so she had no guardian left alive to force her into anything. Safiya’s divorced first husband was Sallam ibn Mishkam, the commander of the resistance at Khaybar. Having valiantly placed himself in the frontline of the battle alongside the peasants, Sallam was one of the 93 casualties. So the Islamo-apologists who try to tell you that “Safiya’s first husband died in the battle” are technically correct.

    But here’s the sting, the solitary poetic justice in this nightmare of blood and slavery. Sallam ibn Mishkam’s second wife was none other than Zeynab bint al-Harith, the Jewish cook who served Mohammed the famous poisoned lamb. Zeynab was not the old crone of popular imagination, for her father had been young enough to die in battle beside her husband. She was probably the same age as Safiya – an idealistic teenager who was just trying to do the world a favour.

    I’m not entirely sure about this one, though.

    I’ve heard Muslims respond to this case in some instances with utter hysteria, including the unfounded claim that Zeynab was desperate for “the Prophet” to save her because Zayd was a wife beater.

    Perhaps she hadn’t wanted to marry Zayd; perhaps she was attracted to old Mo due to his power.

    Or perhaps she was ordered to divorce her husband and marry Muhammed”certainly, Zayd was compelled to divorce Zeynab.

    In any case, this seems at best an ugly case where “the Prophet” was consumed with lust upon seeing his daughter-in-law, and came up with a convenient “revelation” by which he could have her. Ugh.

The hadiths are quite blunt about Muslim wife-bashers – Omar, Abu Jahm, those damned Muslim women who complained about domestic violence – even Mohammed himself does not have a clean track-record. But I don’t recall one that accused Zayd. Since there are a lot of hadiths, you might have a case.

    However, it is definitely canonical that when Mohammed informed Zeynab that she was to marry Zayd, she replied: “I don’t like this for myself, as I am a Quraysh widow. My ancestry is better than his.” I think you’ll find it in al-Tabari, who has an embarrassing habit of including stories that ibn Hisham found too distasteful to repeat.

    Whatever you think of Zeynab’s personal morals in saying this, she should have been allowed to stay single if she wished it. However, Allah was having none of that. He sent down the forced marriage revelation. Sura 33:36: “It is not for any believer, man or woman, when God and His Messenger have decreed a matter, to have the choice in the affair.”

    A year later, when it became clear that Mohammed desired Zaynab, al-Tabari (39:180-182) unblushingly tells us that “Zeynab began to hate Zayd.” Zayd complained that she despised him, snubbed him verbally and made him feel unwelcome in the bedroom. Of course, this story might be fabricated to make it look as if Zayd didn’t mind divorcing Zeynab or to cover up the reality that she had hated him all along. But if it’s true, then it might have been Zeynab as much as Mohammed who was manipulating the situation, and Zayd was psychologically pressured (probably not strictly “forced”) to sacrifice his marriage.

    The revelation that Allah wished Mohammed to marry Zeynab did not appear until Zeynab had finished her three-month waiting period.

There are also musloid doctorsperforming FGM “under the table”.

    I suppose I wasn’t very clear, Diana. This *is not* a case I am making, nor do I claim that this story is made in the Hadiths.

    This is an assertion I have seen made several times by Muslim apologists appealing to Westerners”that this is not a story about a man marrying his own daughter-in-law so much as it is about the “Prophet” coming to the aid of a damsel-in-distress.

    I don’t believe a word of it. The examples I have seen never back it up with any Islamic texts.

    It seems fairly clear that Zeynab had to marry Zayd on the word of the “Prophet””and when the “Prophet” decided he wanted her for himself, he received a convenient “revelation” telling him it was Halal to compel his own adopted son to divorce his wife so that he could marry her.

    Most Muslims of Muhammed’s time”or our time, for that matter”don’t much care if some poor woman is being used as a punching bag by her husband.

    But apparently some contemporary Muslims believe the incident sounds a lot less skeevy on Muhammad’s part if he was being a “gentleman”, rather than a horny old creep”hence the Taqiyya.

    CGW, can you run that by me again? Is “your area” a Muslim country, a western democracy or “other”?

    A professional who sees an FGM victim “in danger of bleeding to death” is witnessing major child abuse. Who is “warning” the professionals not to do their job? What would happen if they did? And if they don’t mention it to anyone, how do you or anyone else know about it? And what prevents these secondary witnesses telling what they know?

    CGW and Diana, I believe I know what is going on here”but I *do not* condone it.

    While one aspect of this may be mindless multiculturalism and the desire to “speak no evil” of Islam, I believe the main idea is that if these butchers are regularly prosecuted *they will not call an ambulance if the poor girl starts to bleed to death*. They’ll just let her die and bury her in the back yard.

    Especially here on the “left coast”, you hear of cases all the time where EMTs and doctors will quietly ignore cases where patients are clearly illegals, where they are in sex slavery, all sorts of ugly situations”because they feel that if they keep quiet they at least get to treat the poor patients.

    Instead, I believe that Muslims should be put on notice: they will be severely prosecuted for practicing FGM”and if it is found that they didn’t get medical attention for a girl who dies, they should be charged with first degree murder, and face life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted.
