Al-Qaeda says it has 70-year-old US aid expert Warren Weinstein, who was kidnapped by armed men in the Pakistani city of Lahore nearly four months ago.
In a video, al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri said he would be freed if the US stopped air strikes in Afghanistan and Pakistan, among other demands.
Mr Weinstein is a former USAID worker who has lived in Pakistan for five years.
US officials have not said publicly who they believed was holding him.
"Just as the Americans detain whomever they suspect may be connected to al-Qaeda or the Taliban even in the slightest of ways, we have detained this man who has been involved with US aid to Pakistan since the 1970s," Zawahiri said in the 31-minute video.
'Retaliation'
He also demanded that America stop air strikes on Somalia and Yemen, according to a US monitoring group, Site Intelligence.
And he called for the release of al-Qaeda and Taliban suspects around the world, including the 1993 World Trade Center bombers.
Zawahiri confirmed, too, an announcement by US officials in August that his Libyan deputy, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, had been killed in an air strike in Pakistan's north-western tribal region.
"The retaliation, with permission from Allah, will be taken against those crusader Westerners who killed him [Rahman] and his two sons, and killed hundreds of thousands of our brothers, sons, women, and sheikhs, and occupied our countries [and] looted our wealth," said Zawahiri. [...]
[Weinstein] was said to be the country director in Pakistan for JE Austin Associates, an American firm that advises a range of Pakistani business and government sectors.
Mr Weinstein reportedly lived mainly in Islamabad, but also travelled to Lahore. He was described on the firm's website as an "expert in international development with 25 years' experience".....

Some things never change. The behavior of Muslims is one thing. The distortion of history is another. It was the Muslims that started the Crusades. After capturing Jerusalem, they began to prey on Christian pilgrims heading into the Holy Land. They raped the women, killed the men, held both for ransom or sold into slavery. The Catholic church took exception to both. The Muslims were at war with the Bzy. empire and the ruler of that empire asked the West for help to stop the complete destruction of the Eastern Christian Church. So as far as the Crusades were concerned, they were a defensive movement, not an aggressive movement. It was the Muslims that were an offensive movement. The Crusaders set up safety zones, they also set up refuge cities but they did not set out the capture the whole of the Muslim lands, they simply were trying to secure that which had been Christian lands for hundreds of years. So when the Muslims use the term "Crusaders" as a negative term they are not being honest. They created the "Crusaders" because of their behavior. The current usage of the term "Crusader" by Muslims is a rewriting of history. Call them on it.

Yes, I know, I've said it before, but:
If Islam is above criticism, and it is, then Zawahiri is to be commended for this blackmail. After all, the Holy Prophet Mohammed made a practice of kidnapping for ransom. Given that he himself sez he's following in the Holy Prophet's footsteps, then it's incumbent on us to close the informational loop and congratulate him on his success with the capture of the old man. Say, isn't Weinstein a Jewish name? And, if he is a Jew, shouldn't Brian Williams and Bill O'Reilly make mention of the Holy Prophet's command to Just kill every Jew in the country? Mentions could also be made of Abu, Asma, Qurazay and so many other Jew murders.
The logic is this: if the world doesn't know what Mohammed did, and they don't, then it follows that condemning Zawahiri for his latest felony without condeming Islam, or least the Holy Prophet, the world's handling of Jihad crimes is factually deficient and incomplete, mistaken work.
This longstanding Infidel response to Moslems has always increased exposure to more trouble. Moslems always have more demands and, so long as Islam exists, they always will. Dealing with them unrealistically leaves a cycle whereby important lessons are not learned with each Moslem news event, which often end in violence and are always based on the constant threat of it.

It's unwise to travel almost anywhere in the Islamic world these days, but blaming the victim is unfair. The problem is with the Islamic zealotry afoot in Pakistan & elsewhere. If these nations cannot protect Western visitors, we should remove our visitors simultaneous to removing all our foreign aid.
A 70 year old man? not a big deal. They can do better! Muhammad, the coward prophet of islam, killed Abu Afak, a 120 year old man for writing poems criticizing his holiness. "Development" has never much interested Muslims. Why bother, when you can just kidnap well-meaning Kaffirs, instead?
And as APF notes, there is a good chance that a man with a name like "Weinstein" *is Jewish*.
Elderly, Infidel, and Jewish—that's three strikes. I agree that putting a person in this position at all was deeply foolish—but that doesn't make me any less angry at this act of barbarism.
I pray that Warren Weinstein survives.
