Biden: "Look, the Taliban per se is not our enemy"

Biden continues here the Obama Administration's narrow focus on al-Qaeda as the enemy. Not even the Taliban are included anymore, despite their obvious involvement in 9/11 plotting and more. And the ideology that al-Qaeda and the Taliban, as well as many other jihad groups around the globe? Off the table. Cannot and must not be examined.

"Joe Biden On Iraq, Iran, China and the Taliban," by Leslie H. Gelb for Newsweek via The Daily Beast, December 19 (thanks to Wimpy):

On Thursday, Dec. 15, Vice President Joe Biden sat down in his sunlit White House office adjoining the Rose Garden to do what he loves best—talk about foreign policy—with Leslie H. Gelb of Newsweek/The Daily Beast. What follows are excerpts of their exclusive review of the year’s hotspots....

NEWSWEEK: What are our vital interests in continuing to fight a major war in Afghanistan?

BIDEN: We were in Afghanistan for two reasons. One is to deal with, curtail, begin to dismantle, and eventually eliminate al Qaeda. Not only from being able to come back into Afghanistan and control Afghanistan but from the region—to decimate al Qaeda.

NEWSWEEK: Almost an impossible goal to achieve.

BIDEN: No—to fundamentally alter their capacity to do damage to American allies and vital U.S. interests, to fundamentally alter that. We have done that. It doesn’t mean they’re not capable.

NEWSWEEK: It means we’ve done it for the time being, but depending upon who comes to power in Afghanistan in the future, they can come back. I know you don’t favor staying there ad infinitum to prevent that.

BIDEN: I would argue they are not able to come back. I would argue that there has been serious damage done to their infrastructure in a way that the coherence of this thing called al Qaeda and their ability to metastasize has been severely damaged.

NEWSWEEK: So we no longer have to stay in Afghanistan to fight for it?

BIDEN: No, let me finish. That is not fully achieved, it is close. The second reason for us to be in Afghanistan was to make sure that a country with tens of millions of people and nuclear weapons called Pakistan did not somehow begin to disintegrate or fall apart. That is a hell of a lot tougher job....

Great job on that score, Joe. Pakistan is a paragon of anti-jihad Islamic moderation, now, ain't it?

NEWSWEEK: I know you don’t believe we can reshape Afghanistan and make it into a caramelized democracy.

BIDEN: Look, look, Les, let’s posit that your statement is that it’s clear that Pakistan could live with an Afghanistan controlled by the Taliban.

NEWSWEEK: They did.

BIDEN: We could not. We could not because they harbored, sheltered, and supported an outfit that created a real threat to the United States.

NEWSWEEK: And we told them if you stop harboring al Qaeda, we’ll live with you too.

BIDEN: Yes, but they didn’t.

NEWSWEEK: And we can make that deal now.

BIDEN: We didn’t. That is part of what the reconciliation process is about right now. We are not just deciding that all we are doing is supporting a government and building up their military capability. We’re engaged in a reconciliation process. Whether it will work or not is another question. But we are in a position where if Afghanistan ceased and desisted from being a haven for people who do damage and have as a target the United States of America and their allies, that’s good enough. That’s good enough. We’re not there yet.

Look, the Taliban per se is not our enemy. That’s critical. There is not a single statement that the president has ever made in any of our policy assertions that the Taliban is our enemy because it threatens U.S. interests. If, in fact, the Taliban is able to collapse the existing government, which is cooperating with us in keeping the bad guys from being able to do damage to us, then that becomes a problem for us. So there’s a dual track here:

One, continue to keep the pressure on al Qaeda and continue to diminish them. Two, put the government in a position where they can be strong enough that they can negotiate with and not be overthrown by the Taliban. And at the same time try to get the Taliban to move in the direction to see to it that they, through reconciliation, commit not to be engaged with al Qaeda or any other organization that they would harbor to do damage to us and our allies....

Yes sir...and there was a companion article on Drudge about US and Taliban negotiators getting closer to a potential agreement. Well, Lord knows it's time to leave Afghanistan, but we'd be incredibly naive if we don't anticipate an outcome similar to the Paris Peace Accords in 1973. Remember? America declared "peace with honor," pulled its troops out of Vietnam, and two years later the Commies took over the country.

The Taliban will sign on the dotted line, wave by-by to our last troops, and then pick up right where they left off. Karzai won't last a year.

Well Joe, you got that right. It's Islam as a whole and the reason your nose is brown !

Look, the Taliban per se is not our enemy. That’s critical.

What's critical is that we understand that the Taliban and Al Qaeda are only transient manifestations of something thousands of times larger, to total somewhere around 1.2 billion, if ya wanna quantify.

The only solution to Moslemism is to hold Moslem nation states directly responsible for terror training and staging operations run on their soil. It's their responsibility to know about it and put a stop to it, otherwise the U.S. Navy will come by and mete out punishment in the form of downed bridges, emptied reservoirs, poisoned crops, bombed highways, destroyed commercial airports... that kinda stuff. The only thing a Moslem can understand.

Well Joe, you got that right. It's Islam as a whole and the reason your nose has a brownish tinge to it !

Taliban isn't our enemy!? Neither is Usama bin Laden... Yes it sounds ridiculous when you hear it from anybody but yourself.

We should really pull our troops from Middle East and stop getting our young ones killed anyhow. This administration has no idea what is going on in the Muslim countries so what is the use of keeping forces in the region. Let Afganistan, Pakistan and Iran and the other "Muslim Brothers" handle their own affairs in a "civilized" manner as they always do. We need to send our troops when we have an administration with a clear mission to fight the religion (cult) of ISLAM. Also, in Middle East they have a lot of people part of the MUSLIM world who do not want to be part of the this crazy IDEALOGY. Let them fight a bit for their own freedom (with our help as much as possible). So yes pull the troops and help ISRAEL 100% NOW.

So, Joe, kindly tell us who the people were that gave safe haven to Osama Bin Laden to allow him to plot the 9/11 attacks? Who were the people against whom all seven Afghan feminists whined and pouted on campuses across America in the months followin 09/11/01, when the USA was as united as it has ever been during my lifetime? Who were the people our people shot at and who shot at us when we went into Afghanistan? Or, kindly tell me, has the definition of "enemy" changed?

Joe, do you honestly believe that there are no people out there who may actually hate us for what we are, rather than for what we've done?

Besides pulling our troops, we need to cut the money flow, and IMPEACH Obama; plus kick every liberal leftist and useless religious group out of Washington. Then start kicking "arse" all the way down the governmental chain.

Then tell the whmpering, whinning muslims either go to a place where you "feel" respected and the laws of the land are to your liking or shut-up; plus make sure they know they can and will be sent there if they either dont listen or start up again.

IMPEACH OBAMA, NOW!!

If Joe Biden doesn't know that the *Taliban* is our enemy, he is not fit to be dog catcher, let alone *Vice-President of the United States*.

He should take it as a bad sign that the correspondent *for Newsweek*—that politically-correct rag—seems to consider him to be a bit on the naïve side...

Joe makes no sense whatsoever.

Liberals/Democrats seem to always want to get to root causes of events for someone to blame. True, always conservatives/Republicans.

What is the root cause(s) behind AlQueda, Taliban, Arab Spring, or Muslim Brotherhood? Oh yeah, democracy!

Amazing! Neither Joe or the Newsweek tool even once used the word: ISLAM?

What fools!

WE ARE AT WAR!

Per se, Graven, Vice Prez Joe was careful to say per se.

Don't forget that Joe graduated at the top of his class at Harvard. Well, ok, that wuz a lie, but it was still Harvard, for goodness sake. That counts for a lot, in DC, a town that has seen a steady parade of Ivy League dumbasses going back decades now. This is our ruling elite, and Vice Prez Joe is one of the elite's leading foreign policy experts. Proof of this is that he's been exactly wrong on every foreign policy question that has confronted him since he came to town.

Joe makes complete sense when you understand that he is a willing dhimmi.
I nominate him for "All-American Dhimmi" of the year award.
And here is what he is going to say next:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/863/frontcoverprintready.jpg/

It suddenly occured to me why no one has started impeachment proceedings against Obama.

God bless America!

Leaving the question of the Taliban aside, it's pretty clear that Joe Biden is an enemy of the U.S.

Alarmed Pig Farmer wrote:

.......................

I agree—that pretty much sums it up.

By the way, I've been enjoying your efforts as a "poetaster". Bravo! Of course, now that you've declared yourself a "prophet", you may not have any critics at all...

(The above entirely tongue-in-cheek, APF)

Although the Taliban are defined by their savagery, they are not our enemies, per-say. Say what?

Man, this was a stupid thing for VPOTUS to say.

Must agree with Alarmed Pig Farmer. We all know that actual nations give support to the Taliban, so let's just blow up stuff in those supporting nations from a great distance. Start with anything that produces potable water and go from there.

Biden is an amoral three-quarter-wit who doesn't even bat an eye when he advocates "reconciliation" with murderous theo-totalitarian thugs. I second Bingo's advice: stand far off shore and lob stuff that goes boom at them until they get the point.

Notice how they just can't connect the dots Taliban, Muslim Brotherhood, Pakistan, Jihad, Islam, murdering of Christians and Jews through out the world including all infidels. American Jihadist are really always acting alone. The Department of Justice has all of the political correct analysis down to the construct that Islam has nothing to do with any of this. It is fine to accept the Taliban as a friendly ally now because forcing women back to the stone age is fine, indoctrinating children in Madrassas is fine, treating all non-Muslims with contempt is fine. Nothing wrong here lets get on with our job of making peace at all cost.

Al Qaida and the Taliban are so ideologically fused together that Mullah Omar sacrificed his rulership of Afghanistan out of loyalty to fellow jihadist bin Laden. George Bush gave Omar the choice: either give up bin Laden and the other Al Qaida leaders or face the wrath of the United States. He chose the latter because not to do so would be a betrayal of Allah and Islam, and the suffering of greater wrath in the world to come.

I wonder if Biden has ever read the BBC interview with Mullah Omar from 2001:

"This is not a matter of weapons. We are hopeful for God's help. The real matter is the extinction of America. And, God willing, it [America] will fall to the ground."

So the Taliban are not America's enemy per se, but the Emir of the Taliban rubs his hands in glee at the thought of America's extinction. Just what would it take for them to become an absolute enemy? how can you get more extreme than being diametrically opposed to your existence?

thread winner

It is hard to read without seeing red. It is an admission that we threw our soldiers to the wolves for ten years to please (i.e., entertain) Pakistan so Obama can now negotiate with the Taliban to prevent them from making Obama look bad? And, Obama has a talking head deliver the message to the media so as to blur the image and give Obama denial-ability. I can see Obama's smirk once again.

I initially felt inspired to take apart Uncle Joe's incoherent ramblings, but I'll just leave it at:
______________________________________________

He's incoherent.

This is the same ignoramus who wanted to split Iraq in three before U.S. forces even had a chance to stem the sectarian strife. If the president had half his wits about him, he wouldn't have this half-wit around him.

"One, continue to keep the pressure on al Qaeda and continue to diminish them. Two, put the government in a position where they can be strong enough that they can negotiate with and not be overthrown by the Taliban." - Joe Biden

Why does this sound like the stellar strategy we pursued in Vietnam? … We know how that ended. Sick! Except this time the enemy is much more embedded and grimly determined, with 1400 years of brutal Jihad slaughter-and-slaver history backing them up. Communism was child's play by comp. Fool.

The Serb Christians are Biden's enemies. On CNN, he demanded that every Serb man, woman or child be "put in German-type camps.
The unspeakable evil the US, England and other Western democracies did unto the Serb people. The evil.
