KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) - Clashes between a violent Islamist sect and security forces in Nigeria's northeastern city of Damaturu have killed at least 24 people in the past day, police said on Friday.
A sustained gun battle broke out between Nigerian security forces and suspected Islamist militants in Damaturu on Thursday, and several explosions were heard.
Then on Friday suspected sect members opened fire on a group of policemen shortly after Friday prayers in the city, killing four, local police officials said. [...]
Confrontations between security forces and the Boko Haram sect have become increasingly frequent in the past couple of weeks, as the north's simmering conflict escalates, though the insurgency remains low level and sporadic.
Boko Haram, whose name roughly translates as "Western learning is forbidden" has been blamed for scores of shootings and bombings in the north, including a spate of attacks in the past few weeks across the region.
Despite many crackdowns, Nigerian security forces have so far been unable to contain Boko Haram violence. This year the group struck in the capital Abuja twice, including a suicide car bomb attack against the U.N. headquarters that killed 26 people.
Obviously the 'Western learning forbiddeners' aren't aware of the current 'curriculum.'
In terms of a tipping point, it looks like Nigeria is there already. With Islam now over 51% of the population, it's only a matter of two generations before Nigeria looks like Egypt. Like the Copts, the Christians of Nigeria will also begin to emigrate, and eventually this sort of matter-of-fact violence will become so frequent that 48% will become 33%, then 25%. Lebanon is another good example.
Maybe the Nigerian Christians will have another go at establishing an independent state. The Moslems are concentrated overwhelmingly in the northern part of Nigeria, and Christians overwhelmingly in the south, so splitting the country seems like a good idea. Let the north become a boko haram cesspit like so many other Moslem countries, while the south makes itself into a civilized country.
Of course, the Christian Ibos tried this in the '60's and it didn't work, largely because the West feared bad publicity if it interfered in the "internal affairs" of a newly-independent country and so stood aside. This time, with the Sudan and Bosnia as precedents, it might work.
In any event the Christians should be arming themselves to the teeth, and be willing to return bullet for bullet.

Having played numerous gigs in Nigeria during the 80s/early 90s, I can speak to this first hand. Last Christmas, I did a videochat Christmas with my friend Fidelio and his family in Lagos. After the kids left the room he and his wife told me of the harassment they experienced daily from Boko Haram and others. They sisappeared from the web last spring.
That tells us that if you're a Christian in Nigeria, you need guns and plenty of ammo, if you want to live, or at least die hitting back.
It is better to die standing on your own two feet than to die kneeling...

You were one of the first here to really take note of this vicious phenomenon, Dumbledore's Army. It is notable just how much Muslim violence takes place after those vicious Friday Kutbahs ("sermons").
As always, I say compare that to Sundays in the Christian (and "post-Christian") West, where the Sabbath tends to be a peaceful, low-key day—both for those who attend church, and even for those who do not.
