PANETTA JUST DOESN'T GET IT

He doesn't understand that Israel's sin (its intolerable, unpardonable, unforgivable sin) is that it's non-Islamic; that its existence is a refutation of basic Islamic truths; that it calls into question the Koran as divine revelation and Mohammed as the ultimate prophet of God. Panetta doesn't understand that nothing short of surrendering to Allah, and accepting Islam as the one true Abrahamic faith, will end Israel's isolation in the Middle East and Islam's war against Jews.

At least - maybe - this sort of idiocy will disabuse some Jews about voting for Obama.

The comments at the end about Iran are breath-taking. Last I looked, Iraq has been nuke-free for 30 years since the IAF took out their facility. Granted Iraq was not Islamic at the time and Iran will be a tougher customer, but all's well that ends in a heap of dust at the end of an IAF strike....

Among the examples of real madness are prediction after prediction that an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would only have a shelf life of a couple of years.

Seems to me that Israel's gestures have already been rebuked dozens (hundreds?) of times, and clods like Panetts still don't see them for what they are. What are all the rockets that the "Palestinans" fire into Israel but rebukes?

It would have been most profitable for George Bush to have considered unintended consequences before involving us in a decade of fruitless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I hope Panetta takes himself seriously.

Iran has been working on acquiring nuclear weapons for decades. There is no way that sanctions are going to stop Iran's determination for a nuclear bomb. If Panetta seriously believes what he says, the only alternative is an invasion of Iran to topple the present government and destroy any nuclear installations. The US would have to have its own determination to withdraw immediately after achieving its physical objectives. There would be no nation-building and no systematic dismantling of the Iranian government.

The best scenario would be for the US (and/or Israel) to bomb the nuclear facilities, and prepare an invasion. The Iranians, Ghaddafi-style, would renounce weapons of mass destruction and allow real inspections, making an invasion unnecessary.

I'm not thrilled about an invasion, but if the former head of the CIA believes a strike on Iran will not halt their nuclear capabilities, we have to consider stronger measures.

Panetta: "If the gestures are rebuked, the world will see those rebukes for what they are."

The world has seen Islam's rebukes of Israel and doesn't give a damn. Everyone knows this except the damn western socialists like Panetta.

This sound like a "one last chance" effort by a hamstrung White House tied up with its own self-made political correctness to never name the real problem. Now is absolutely not the time to "mend fences". Mending fences might have worked with the realpolitic dictators to a degree but this new crop of nasties really believes they are under a religious command to drive all non muslims out of the Middle East.

Nothing done in the effort to mend fences will ever be enough for them.

It is time to show strength and steadfastness while giving the predators as little propoganda amunition as possible. Responding to non lethal provocations will play into the hands of the radicals who want to whip up even more anti Israel frenzy.

And just who are they supposed to mend fences with? What exactly has Israel done to other countries in the reagion for which fence mending is needed? Syria? That government could be on the way out. Lebanon? No chance while Hizbollah exists. Egypt? Saudi Arabia? Turkey? The UAE? Kuwait? What has Israel actually done to ANY of those nations that has to be rectified by fence mending? What mending is Panetta talking about?

And Egypt is currently 1) in a state of flux and 2) now partially controlled by the same people who control Hamas so good luck with that.

Turkey? Turkey is using an aggresive stance toward Israel for its own regional ambitions. What Israel or the US would like is irrelevant to Turkey at this time.

Anyone Israel talks to would be labled a traitor by radical islamists which would inspire insurgencies or increase the sympathy for insurgencies already underway. Even if various ME governments want to establish better relations with Israel they would absolutely not want to be seen to be doing so right now.

The fact of the matter is that Israel is the only entitiy in the region that can stand up against Iranian nuclear aggression and all the ME countries know it. It is THEY who need to do the fence mending (i.e. full on crawling on hands and knees thru the mud groveling) if they want Israel to stand between them and a nuclear Iran.

They're lining up for the group groping of Israel: Panetta, Hillary and the Amba$$ador to Belgium.
And of course, the regiment of "outreach" personnel in the White House, State, Justice, Defense, Commerce, Education........

Leon Panetta hasn't held that office since July 2011, when he became Secretary of Defense.

I do think that your point should generally apply to anyone outside of the State Department. Unfortunately this kind of poaching has gone on since Robert McNamara was Secretary of Defense. If you want the freedom to opine on foreign policy, become a private citizen.
