Egyptian sheikh forbids purchasing Chevrolets because logo looks like a cross

Ford just got a big boost in the Salafist market. "Egyptian Sheikh: Driving a Chevy is Haram," by Angie Nasser for Now Lebanon, January 24:

"And I think to myself, what a wonderful world..."

A Salafi sheikh in Egypt has reportedly issued a fatwa that buying [or driving] a Chevrolet vehicle is haram because the American brand’s logo looks like the Christian cross.

In the video below, prominent Egyptian TV presenter Amr Adeeb takes the sheikh’s joke-of-a-fatwa to task, saying, “We’ve reached a really strange place with this.”

“The car’s been around [for a century] and only now did you notice there’s a cross on the car?”

Adeeb also notes that the car is not used or presented as a form of religious iconography: “Do we hold mass for it? Do we pray for it?” And his guest chimes in with a comment about the self-centered nature of the fatwa itself: “As if the people who came up with the logo were thinking that we want to put this special logo on the car just to piss us [Muslims] off?”

The TV presenter concludes, “With all of the problems in Egypt, you’re concerned about the cross?... We’re calling for unity [in the country] and then you come up with [fatwas] like this?”

By the way, there’s actually a few theories going around about the symbolism behind the Chevrolet logo. One common story is that General Motors co-founder William C. Durant copied the design off some wallpaper he saw in a Parisian Hotel. But historian Ken Kaufmann says the logo is actually based on iconography used by the Southern Compressed Coal Company ad for its “Coalettes” logo....

Years of observation of footage suggest Toyota pickups still have the jihadist market cornered. The duplicitous Muslim Brotherhood, for its part, might prefer "Dodge."

No doubt, the Chevy logo will be shortly changed.

"No doubt, the Chevy logo will be shortly changed."

By Executive Order from the president. ;>)

You just can't make this stuff up!

Would substituting the star and crescent for the "bow tie" (AKA Kuffar Cross) mollify the sheikh?

Funny - I never saw the Chevy logo as anything but the "bow tie" of hot-rodder lingo...

"She's real fine, my '409..." by the Beach Boys is still one of my favorites...

Why would Chevy care? Most Arabs are too status conscious, and I wouldn't be surprised if their cabs were Mercs, BMWs or even Porsches. Of course, BMW is problematic, since the quadrant division looks like a cross, although I guess Merc may be fine.

Ford could easily create a brand in the Arab league whose symbol is 'allah' scrawled in Arabic, and have it sell like hotcakes in dar ul Islam. They may have to boycott Israel, but frankly, Israel would be better off w/o any Fords. In fact, if Ford makes some real good gas guzzlers - which ain't a problem in OPEC, they can turn their corporate fortunes on Islamic sales alone, even while they dwindle in America & Europe.

Like the country of Egypt could actually make a car by themselves.....

As was pointed out above, the Chevy logo is a bow tie. I figure since Nation of Islam issues a bow tie to it's male adherents then Chevy should be halal.

The duplicitous Muslim Brotherhood, for its part, might prefer "Dodge."

Made me laugh out really loud... :D

I odn't see the video bu what a douch.

Crosses on cars are in the eye of the one-brain-celled beholder! :)

Five-star clown!

...bloodsucking vampires are also afraid of crosses, hmm.

Chevy itself has long called its logo a "bowtie."

Good to know that muslim scholars (cough*) know better than GM itself. These scholars (coughing again) are on the case and have finally determined that Chevy's registered trademark, despite the testimony of Mrs. Durant,

http://home.earthlink.net/~scrippsbooth/chevbowtiehistory.html

is a Christian cross.

Who knew?

Well, now we know.

*I always find myself coughing at certain phrases, like muslim scholar or islamic thinking society,

They hate the Cross because they hate the One who died on the Cross. They hate Him because, according to their own books, He is Holy while Muhammad was a disgusting and filthy sinner.

And not only that: Dinah Shore, who used to plug Chevy's on her show back in the '50's, was Jewish! Coincidence or Vatican/Zionist conspiracy? You be the judge, jihadi.

Nope. It's the Slav cars, all the way baby.

"Here, take this bomb vest. You've got to get all those children jumping around looking for candy from that kufr soldier."

"No way. Yugo."

Update on the Chevrolet song Dinah sang:

See the UAE in your Chevrolet
Mohammadans are asking you to call

OK, maybe not...

I noticed this several years ago surmised Muslims would have a problem with GM. I quickly Wikied that the logo is and always has been a bow tie. Just goes to show not only will Muslim radicals sink low as whale crap to hate anything, but they are very dimwitted at realizing the obvious.

You have got to be kidding?
Would that be considered incitement to violence?

George, I was going to cite the old Chevrolet jingle myself. I'm just old enough to remember it from my early childhood.

BMW's logo features a cross of sorts, as well. Let's see if Muslims are willing to give up their Beamers.

The fact is that a lot of old car logos originally derived from heraldry. And you know what the means—"Crusaders".

In acknowledgment of such, I believe all pious Muslims should be reduced to driving Yugos.

Graven, Dinah sang that Chevy jingle every--was it Saturday or Sunday?--night when I was just old enough that I can recall it (because my parents watched the show). Was it Dinah's own variety show? I'm thinking that it was.
Viewed on our Zenith black & white TV!

Thinking back on those times, it's hard to believe this is even (technically, at least) the same country. I can only imagine how my late dad, a classic Midwestern Conservative,
would have reacted to islam in our midst...

Bad news for Alfa Romeo, actually having a cross in the logo. But there is also a serpent in the Alfa Romeo logo.
The serpent should have a great appeal to muslims.

Let the clowns drive camels, then!

And brand 'em with a Crescent and Star on their forehead.

That ought to make the idiots happy.

Me? I drive an old Dodge Ram, affectionately known to friends, colleagues and students as the "Taliban Truck".

Actually, I've been dumping so much money into it lately, I'm thinking of hiring them to blow it up for me.

In a perhaps not so curious coincidence we see a parallel here between various sorts of idiots.

The common elements are:
-- thinking by association
-- holding others responsible for one's own mind

So f'rinstance:

-- This sheikh is associates the Chevy logo with the cross, and associates the cross with all sorts of bad things, and holds Chevrolet and their customers responsible for the uncomfortable state of mind he experiences when he sees a Chevy.

-- We've seen something similar in our elementary schools with the anti-gun hysteria.

Teachers associate toy guns, and even drawings of guns with real weapons, and they associate weapons with all sorts of bad things. They then hold CHILDREN responsible for the uncomfortable state of mind they experience when they see toy guns or drawings of guns.

====

These are all matters of being reminded of one thing by another, associative thinking. Also of wanting to control the outside world, in order to avoid the discomforts inspired in the mind by those associations.

Association is the primary mode of thought available to small children and the higher animals.

And apparently also of the Mohammedan clergy -- and the western left.

====

The mohammedan clergy is this respect also offers an interesting contrast to the Buddhist clergy.

The Buddhists are very big on emphasizing to their congregation that events in the outside world -- to the extent that they are correctly perceived or even real at all -- are far less important that what the mind makes of them. And the pursuit of mental peace requires that one take responsibility for one's own internal life.

To admit to being upset by seeing symbols of foreign religions, much less things that remind one of such symbols, would undoubtedly earn one at least a gentle rebuke by any Buddhist clergyman.

This is a very stark contrast with the Mohammedan attitudes which emphasize the helplessness of the observer and the need to control what might be observed. I.e. since men are helplessly driven by lust, women must cover themselves in shapeless opaque sheets.

In the case above that the Mohammedan mind is helplessly driven toward forbidden Christian things, by something that reminds one (or could) of a cross.

The outlook of children is similar in this area, being very much at the mercy of their emotions and without much practice at working with their internal state.

The Crime Syndicate of Islam and Satan, and Satan's minions, hate the Cross of Christianity. Authentic Muslims hate Jesus Christ.

Lets see, how does this work: Chevrolet is owned by General Motors, General Motors is owned by the U.S. Government, the U.S. Government is owned by Barack Hussein Obama, Barack Hussein Obama is owned by the King of Saudi Arabia. So to maintain peace in the Islamic world, Chevy will have to replace its logo or even worse, General Motors will abolish the brand like it did with Oldsmobile.

Guess what! Any human being looks like a cross. Just stretch your arms out and viola! So what does the ignorant group of people called muslims have to say about that? I guess, "Off with their heads!" ??
