17 times a day, devout Muslims in their prayers say that Jews have earned God's anger, and Christians have gone astray

So say many mainstream Islamic scholars, including Ibn Abbas, a companion of Muhammad, and Ibn Kathir, the Muslim world's most widely respected Quran expositor.

First I'll give you the prayer, next Ibn Kathir's and others' explanation of the lines he says refer to Jews and Christians.

Qur'an Chapter One:

"In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds,
the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Master of the Day of Judgment,
Thee (alone) we worship; Thee (alone) we ask for help.
Show us the straight path,
The path of those whom Thou hast favoured;
Not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger [Jews]
nor of those who go astray [Christians]."

Here is Ibn Kathir's explanation (if you click this link, scroll about 2/3 of the way down the page when you get there):

"(Not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray) meaning guide us to the straight path [Islam]...help us to avoid the path of those whom Allah is angry with, whose intentions are corrupt, who know the truth, yet deviate from it. Also, help us avoid the path of those who were led astray, who lost the true knowledge and, as a result, are wandering in misguidance, unable to find the correct path...These two paths are the paths of the Christians and Jews, a fact that the believer should beware of so that he avoids them...the Jews abandoned practicing the religion, while the Christians lost the true knowledge. This is why `anger' descended upon the Jews, while being described as `led astray' is more appropriate of the Christian...We should also mention that both the Christians and the Jews have earned the anger and are led astray, but the anger is one of the attributes more particular of the Jews..."

Here is a companion of Muhammad, namely Ibn Abbas, expatiating on the same two lines:

"...(Not of those who earn Thine anger), not the religion of the Jews who earned Your anger, whom You forsook and whose hearts You did not protect until they became complaisant. (Nor of those who go astray), nor the religion of the Christians who erred from Islam..."

And here is what the Tafsir al-Jalalayn, another widely used interpretation of the Qur'an, says about the two lines:

"...not [the path] of those against whom there is wrath, namely, the Jews, and nor of those who are astray, namely, the Christians. The subtle meaning implied by this substitution is that the guided ones are neither the Jews nor the Christians...

If this woman wishes to retain her anonymity as she has indicated, she obviously has a need to alter a story such as this. Otherwise, she could be recognized by those she's writing about. For example, we might assume her colleague wasn't "Egyptian".....and that perhaps it was a boat and not a train in which this encounter took place.

I know you vetted her, Fearless Leader, but please be careful that you don't find yourself becoming a conduit for stories that may be so factually altered that they're borderline fiction.

That story is really creepy.

Liberated gives us the story told her by her Egyptian Mohammedan colleague, when he discovers that the nice people he'd been talking to on the train in Europe were *Jewish* (and note: presumably he was a fairly lax Mohammedan, for he was allowing his family to interact in a friendly fashion with a *non-Muslim* family; but when he found out these particular non-Muslims were Jews, then...this urge to 'push them off the train' rushed up inside him).

I am reminded of other Mohammedans who, unlike Liberated's colleague - who instead of shoving the Jewish family off the train, as was his first impulse, instead simply removed himself and his family to another carriage - gave way to the impulse to attack.

Here is something that happened in Canada, in 2006 (on a Friday evening, btw: I looked up my diary for 2006, when I first encountered this story, and Nov 3 2006 was a Friday) at a railway station.

'[Mustapha] Taj, 21, was convicted in May of attacking four teenagers the night of Nov. 3, 2006, while they waited for a C-Train at the Sunnyside LRT station.

'Taj approached the group around 10:45 p.m. and asked "who's Jewish." Nichola Cordato, then 16, stated "me" and Taj grabbed her and said, "I'm Muslim and hate Jews."

'He then slapped her in the face and pulled her hair before her friends, Jessica Motta, Kayla Hungle and Daniel Ball attempted to intervene.

'Hungle attempted to prevent Taj from further attacking Cordato and was punched in the face by him.

'Motta then intervened and was punched in the face, pulled to the ground by her hair and kicked in the stomach and ribs.

'When Ball tried to stop the assaults, he was thrown onto the C-Train tracks where he fell onto his back and was spat upon by Taj.

'During the melee, Taj called Cordato a "Jewish piece of (crap)."'

I think the thing that is striking about this story is, first of all, this: that I find it hard to believe that Cordato would have answered yes to the Muslim's question 'Who's Jewish?' if it had been asked in a threatening manner.

And secondly, this: that the moment his suspicion is confirmed - the moment he *knows* this vulnerable 16 year old is Jewish - this Muslim man simply goes berserk. He goes apesh*t. He attacks her in a frenzy, verbally and physically; and he also attacks her friends when they try to help her...throwing one of them onto train tracks, which could well have resulted in the boy's death, had a train come along at the wrong moment.

Then there is the story of the Jew Sebastian Selam, in Paris, who was murdered by a Muslim whom he had thought was his friend and colleague (they both worked in a nightclub).

As related in the Jerusalem Post story, 'two sons of France' , on January 21 2010:

'After yet another frenzied night spinning R & B and house tunes in a top Paris nightclub, Sebastien Selam went home to his mother just off Place Colonel Fabien in the 10th district, not far from the hilly Buttes Chaumont Park. It's a typical five-story Paris apartment building owned by the huge AGF insurance company, with small balconies lined with flowerpots, but surrounded by city-owned housing projects in a bustling neighborhood with the tough sons of immigrant families hanging out on the streets.

'After thrilling dancers with his spinning style, the 23-year-old DJ Lam.C, as he was known in the club scene, wanted nothing more than to sleep, but he ran into his longtime neighbor and former buddy, Adel Amastaibou, who said, Let's check out the garage a second."...

'BACK IN the garage at 5 Rue Louis Blanc, Adel Amastaibou took out a long knife and stabbed Sebastien Salem repeatedly in the chest, killing him. He went upstairs to his mother's apartment and told her and then the police when they arrived, "I killed a Jew, I will go to paradise. Allah made me do it."'

Even were this story to be "untrue" in some of its particulars, I know its truth because I have experienced its reality.

If there is a God who loves us, I hope his children reciprocate this love and learn to overcome our differences.

he spoke for two hours with a German man while travelling. Unitl then they were just talking. Once they exchanged personal details and he told the German guy he was Jewish, the German moved to another seat.

Qur'an 3:71 and 2:146 both claim Jews and Christians knew Islam was true but intentionally concealed their knowledge. Jordanian soap opera dramatizes that and demonizes the Jews

Qur'an 3:71:

"Ye People of the Book! [Jews and Christians] Why do ye clothe Truth with falsehood, and conceal the Truth, while ye have knowledge?"

As for Qur'an 2:146, Ibn Kathir, probably the Muslim world's most authoritative Qur'an commentator, explains it thus:

"(2:146. Those to whom We gave the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognise him (Muhammad or the Ka`bah at Makkah) as they recognize their sons. But verily, a party of them conceal the truth while they know it﴿ i.e., the qualities of Muhammad which are written in the Tawrah [Torah, a.k.a. the first five books of the Bible] and the Injil [the Gospels] )."

Because of the profoundly evil qualities of the antagonists in those soap opera episodes, they are quite fun to watch -- until you realize that the episodes are based on the Qur'an, are not meant as fictional, and demonize an actual people, the Jews.

Many years ago, when I was about 25 years old, and working in a health food store in Manhattan, a middle-aged Middle Eastern man asked me a few questions, and after a short while, with a look of profound disgust in his face, he asked if I was Jewish. Being imperturbable and all-forgiving at the time, I gently and kindly told him I consider myself half-Jewish (from my father's side), half Christian (my mother's side).

At the time, I didn't know that Islam demonizes the Jews.

The Head of the Fatwa Committee at Al-Azhar University, the chief center of Islamic and Arabic learning in the world, explains the main qualities of the Jews according to the Qur'an

Sheikh 'Atiyyah Saqr, who died in 2006, wrote,

“The Qur’an has specified a considerable deal of its verses to talking about Jews, their personal qualities and characteristics. The Qur’anic description of Jews is quite impartial; praising them in some occasions where they deserve praise and condemning them in other occasions where they practice blameworthy acts. Yet, the latter occasions outnumbered the former, due to their bad qualities and the heinous acts they used to commit.

The Qur’an praises them on the verse that reads: “ And verily We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture and the Command and the Prophethood, and provided them with good things and favored them above (all) peoples.” i.e. the peoples of their time. (Qur'an 45:16)

Among the bad qualities they were characterized with are the following:

1. They used to fabricate things and falsely ascribe them to Allah. Allah Almighty says: “ That is because they say: We have no duty to the Gentiles. They speak a lie concerning Allah knowingly.” (Qur'an 3:75) Also: “The Jews say: Allah's hand is fettered. Their hands are fettered and they are accursed for saying so. Nay, but both His hands are spread out wide in bounty. He bestoweth as He will.” (Qur'an 5:64)

In another verse Almighty Allah says: “Verily Allah heard the saying of those who said, (when asked for contributions to the war): "Allah, forsooth, is poor, and we are rich! We shall record their saying with their slaying of the Prophets wrongfully and We shall say: Taste ye the punishment of burning!” (Qur'an 3:181)

2. They love to listen to lies. Concerning this Allah says: “and of the Jews: listeners for the sake of falsehood, listeners on behalf of other folk” (Qur'an 5:41)

3. Disobeying Almighty Allah and never observing His commands. Allah says: “And because of their breaking their covenant, We have cursed them and made hard their hearts.” (Qur'an 5:13)

4. Disputing and quarreling. This is clear in the verse that reads: “Their Prophet said unto them: Lo! Allah hath raised up Saul to be a king for you. They said: How can he have kingdom over us when we are more deserving of the kingdom than he is, since he hath not been given wealth enough?” (Qur'an 2:247)

5. Hiding the truth and standing for misleading. This can be understood from the verse that reads: “…distort the Scripture with their tongues, that ye may think that what they say is from the Scripture, when it is not from the Scripture.” (Qur'an 3:78)

6. Staging rebellion against the Prophets and rejecting their guidance. This is clear in the verse: “And when ye said: O Moses! We will not believe in thee till we see Allah plainly.” (Qur'an 2:55

7. Hypocrisy. In a verse, we read: “And when they fall in with those who believe, they say: We believe; but when they go apart to their devils they declare: Lo! we are with you; verily we did but mock.” (Qur'an 2:14) In another verse, we read: “Enjoin ye righteousness upon mankind while ye yourselves forget (to practice it)? And ye are readers of the Scripture! Have ye then no sense?” (Qur'an 2:44)

8. Giving preference to their own interests over the rulings of religion and the dictates of truth. Allah says: “…when there cometh unto you a messenger (from Allah) with that which ye yourselves desire not, ye grow arrogant, and some ye disbelieve and some ye slay?” (Qur'an 2:87)

9. Wishing evil for people and trying to mislead them. This is clear in the verse that reads: “Many of the People of the Scripture long to make you disbelievers after your belief, through envy on their own account, after the truth hath become manifest unto them.” (Qur'an 2:109)

10. They feel pain to see others in happiness and are gleeful when others are afflicted with a calamity. This is clear in the verse that reads: “If a lucky chance befall you, it is evil unto them, and if disaster strike you they rejoice thereat.” (Qur'an 3:120)

11. They are known of their arrogance and haughtiness. They claimed to be the sons and of Allah and His beloved ones. Allah tells us about this in the verse that reads: “The Jews and Christians say: We are sons of Allah and His loved ones.” (Qur'an 5:18

12. Utilitarianism and opportunism are among their innate traits. This is clear in the verse that reads: “And of their taking usury when they were forbidden it, and of their devouring people's wealth by false pretences.” (Qur'an 4:161)

13. Their impoliteness and indecent way of speech is beyond description. Referring to this, the Qur’anic verse reads: “Some of those who are Jews change words from their context and say: "We hear and disobey; hear thou as one who heareth not" and "Listen to us!" distorting with their tongues and slandering religion. If they had said: "We hear and we obey; hear thou, and look at us" it had been better for them, and more upright. But Allah hath cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not, save a few.” (Qur'an 4:46)

14. It is easy for them to slay people and kill innocents. Nothing in the world is dear to their hearts than shedding blood and murdering human beings. They never give up this trait even with the Messengers and the Prophets. Allah says: “…and slew the prophets wrongfully.” (Qur'an 2:61)

15. They are merciless and heartless. In this meaning, the Qur’anic verse explains: “Then, even after that, your hearts were hardened and became as rocks, or worse than rocks, for hardness.” (Qur'an 2:74)

16. They never keep their promises or fulfill their words. Almighty Allah says: “Is it ever so that when ye make a covenant a party of you set it aside? The truth is, most of them believe not.” (Qur'an 2:100)

17. They rush hurriedly to sins and compete in transgression. Allah says: “They restrained not one another from the wickedness they did. Verily evil was that they used to do!” (Qur'an 5:79)

18. Cowardice and their love for this worldly life are their undisputable traits. To this, the Qur’an refers when saying: “Ye are more awful as a fear in their bosoms than Allah. That is because they are a folk who understand not. They will not fight against you in a body save in fortified villages or from behind walls. Their adversity among themselves is very great. Ye think of them as a whole whereas their hearts are divers.” (Qur'an 59:13-14). Allah Almighty also says: “And thou wilt find them greediest of mankind for life and (greedier) than the idolaters.” (Qur'an 2:96)

19. Miserliness runs deep in their hearts. Describing this, the Qur’an states: “Or have they even a share in the Sovereignty? Then in that case, they would not give mankind even the speck on a date stone.” (Qur'an 4:53)

20. Distorting Divine Revelation and Allah’s Sacred Books. Allah says in this regard: “Therefore woe be unto those who write the Scripture with their hands anthem say, "This is from Allah," that they may purchase a small gain therewith. Woe unto them for that their hands have written, and woe unto them for that they earn thereby.” (Qur'an 2:79)

After this clear explanation, we would like to note that these are but some of the most famous traits of the Jews as described in the Qur’an. They have revolted against the Divine ordinances, distorted what has been revealed to them and invented new teachings which, they claimed, were much more better than what has been recorded in the Torah. It was for these traits that they found no warm reception in all countries where they tried to reside. Rather, they would either be driven out or live in isolation. It was Almighty Allah who placed on them His Wrath and made them den of humiliation due to their transgression. Almighty Allah told us that He’d send to them people who’d pour on them rain of severe punishment that would last till the Day of Resurrection. All this gives us glad tidings of the coming victory of Muslims over them once Muslims stick to strong faith and belief in Allah and adopt the modern means of technology."

I had a similar experience in the Netherlands in 1999. It was before the current round of troubles blew up, and I was still a peacenik. I struck up an aquaintance with three Egyptian brothers who ran a shawarma stand where I ate lunch. They were happy to make friends with an American customer - until I told them I was a Jew. Then the atmosphere frosted right up, and they made it clear they no longer wanted my business.

Those three fellows taught me an important lesson about Arabs and Muslims, though it took me a while to comprehend the experience. Robert and other writers on this site have helped me to understand, and for that I thank them.

I think it is pretty clear that Allah hates Jews...Allah also hates Christians and other shirkers...he is not fond of Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists, Shinto's, Zoroastrians, Jehovah's Witnesses, Wiccans, Pygmy headhunters in the Congo...or any other kuffar...

I am not surprised to know that muslims traveling in the train along with the Jews felt like pushing them out of the train. Its the way their minds are shaped and crafted to think on a daily basis. I have witnessed birthdays being celebrated with prayers that everyone repeated after the head of the household said, Save us from the jews! This is a birthday celebration of a 6 year old and 6 other siblings repeated this. I have tracked the life history of these 6 children, they are all messed up muslims, in depression. I have traveled far and wide, studying this brand of tribe. I see them on the job, i see them as customers, I see them in therapy, I see them as neighbors. Everything in life is consciously messed up. Islam is anti life, it takes away your very presence from your own life. Your duty is first to the invisible and not to the visible. Everything visible is meaningless. Islam or Mohammad gets more attention than your real life relationship.

Is it very surprising that cultures which dedicate so much energy to bizarre irrationalities are sunk in poverty and productive impotence?

I think Jonah Goldberg at NRO observed in a column that "Are you Jewish?" isn't that uncommon of a question outside of the USA. And not just muslims ask it all the time.
