Pakistan: Accuser of Asia Bibi, sentenced to death for blasphemy, "weighed down by guilt"; appeal may not be heard until 2015

Asia Bibi is already frail, and a reported beating at the hands of a prison guard did not help. Authorities seem to be half hoping she will die in prison so they will be spared the fallout on one hand of carrying out her sentence, or on the other, of releasing her.

Qari Salam let himself be used by fellow Muslims who promised to "chase her through hell," and as a result, an innocent woman has been sentenced to death and dumped in a Pakistani jail after a show trial with no attorney or a chance to make a statement. The judge feared the wrath of Islamic supremacists who wanted her dead.

Salam is not ready to retract his charges, however, still believing that "it will bring me a better place in heaven."

At the forefront of a popular, polarising case, Qari Salam ostensibly regrets filing a blasphemy charge against an impoverished Christian woman, Aasia Bibi.

The source of his guilt – realisation that the case was not based on facts but on hyped religious emotions and personal bias of some village women.

Aasia has been languishing in Sheikhupura jail since a sessions court awarded her death sentence for insulting Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Support from London

Qari, according to some of his close friends, was now thinking of not pursuing the case anymore and expressed his desire to some of his friends, only to find himself in a difficult situation when activists of a religious organisation ‘convinced’ him not to change his mind.

“We will chase her through hell … don’t worry about the money, hiring best lawyers,” Salam told The Express Tribune, quoting the son of Khatm-e-Nabuwat’s London chapter’s leader.

The leader’s son flew in to Nankana from London after hearing that Salam might not go to Lahore High Court (LHC) when the review petition against Aasia’s conviction is taken up.

Salam himself, however, denied he ever thought of backtracking from his stance.

“How can I change my mind,” he said. “I believe it will bring me a better place in heaven. It gives me pleasure, it is my pride,” Salam told The Express Tribune.

Salam said Khatm-e-Nabuwat had hired Mustafa Chaudhry as counsel to fight his case in the higher court, and were ready to go to an extent to seek death for Aasia.

Counsel seek bail

While bullets may have silenced Aasia’s lone supporter, former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer, they have faltered in the face of the silent resolve of her counsel.
Despite death threats from religious right [sic], Aasia’s lawyers are now planning to seek bail for her from LHC.

Lone supporter? Why no mention of Shahbaz Bhatti, who was also assassinated?

“Yes, we are ready to file a bail application and will be moving ahead with it in a couple of weeks,” said Rai Ajmal, one of the two lawyers who were Aasia’s counsel in Nankana court which sent her to gallows in 2010.
A review petition against the verdict filed by Rai, and a fellow lawyer Sardar Khan Chaudhry, is pending before the LHC and there are little chances that it can be taken up for at least another three years.

Rai said the LHC is still hearing review petitions filed in 2006-07, and judges are reluctant to use their discretionary powers to take up Aasia’s case on a priority basis due to its controversial nature.
Aasia’s review petition was filed in 2010 and, according to sources in the LHC, it will purportedly not be taken up before 2015, while Aasia languishes in jail.

An innocent woman is still in jail, and Pakistan calls itself a just nation? Let's pump more money into this hell hole. NO MORE DOLLARS FROM AMERICA. Islam should be ashamed. The whole world can see what they are doing. Where is the outcry from the women's groups. NOW, where are you. Here you have an innocent woman in prison, her accuser recants but charges are not dropped. She has suffered the loss of her freedom, her health, her dignity and her peace of mind. Sometimes I get so angry over the injustice of Islam. These big bad jailers, would you meet me in the alley? I warn you though, I'm not a frail woman that is intimidated by you. I will kick your butts.

Even if Obama knows about Aasia Bibi's plight,he will not be of any use. When he is keen on 'mending the broken hearts of Muslims",he and his accomplices will turn the other way about the growing Christian persecutions in Pakistan,Egypt and in Nigeria.Are there not a single man with balls in the Congress to get up and boldly shout this question at the reluctant Obama? When Suicide bombers are ready to sacrifice their own lives for their Islamic cause,can't an Amercian do so much for his co-religionists in trouble?

She's not as old as all that - unless you count 'late forties' as a 'little old lady'.

She may not even have passed 'change of life' yet. Her children are teenagers. I've seen recent photos of her, and her hair is black, not grey.

From the article, the words of her accuser, denying that he felt any such thing as remorse:

"How can I change my mind,” he said. “I believe it will bring me a better place in heaven. It gives me pleasure, it is my pride".

He is 'proud' of having told a malicious lie that he knew would most probably lead to a fellow human being, poor and vulnerable, being judicially murdered.

He thinks that telling a lie, to achieve a murder, will earn him 'a better place in [the Islamic] 'heaven'' and that it **gives him pleasure**.

To take *pleasure* in lies, and lies that may well bring about the killing of a defenceless human being, is psychopathic. It is more than that. It is purely diabolical. And it is absolutely disgusting.

(Got that, any Mohammedan lurkers from Pakistan, and anywhere else, reading this? This kind of thing - deliberate false accusation, to get an innocent non-Muslim KILLED - is **disgusting**. It is vile, horrible, ugly, revolting...there are not enough bad words in the English language to describe it. And THAT is your 'religion' - your 'religion' that teaches and encourages you to do things that stink in the sight of all decent non-Muslim human beings, of whatever background, all over planet earth.)

Of course, strictly speaking, this creature doesn't see Aasia Bibi as human, in the first place. Mohammedans are taught to view non-Muslims as things, not as people. And not just as things, but as dirty, nasty things, 'the vilest of creatures', rubbish, equivalent to human excrement. As nonpersons: to be used, abused, and thrown away like garbage.

At least, as a Christian, I can console myself with the fact that if this evil, demon-possessed Mohammedan does not repent of the gross evil he is committing, there will come a moment when he will be compelled to meet the shining eyes of the Holy One, who will cause him to know, terribly, inexorably, in the full publicity of all heaven and earth, that when he [the Mohammedan] told the vicious lie that murdered Aasia Bibi, those actions are counted as a direct personal injury to the Holy One himself. This tells you all you need to know about the savage creed of Islam—whatever humanity Qari Salam retains makes him feel guilty about the injustice he has done this poor woman; yet he still believes his vile actions will "bring [him] a better place in heaven".
