DUSHANBE. – An outrageous incident occurred in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, where a group of religious fanatics killed Santa Claus.Parvis Davlatbekov wore [sic] as Santa Claus to congratulate his friends for the New Year. However, a group of fanatics attacked and stabbed him by crying ‘infidel’ in the street.
The young man died on Monday without coming into consciousness. The unprecedented tragic incident is widely discussed in Facebook, ITARR-TASS reports.
Tajikistani MFA acknowledged officially the incident. However, it rejected that the brutal killing occurred on religious grounds but claims it was a regular violence.
Meantime, local media calls to pay attention to the discussions whether it is right to celebrate the New Year in a state where 98 % of population is Muslims.

Santa Claus reminiscent of Christianity, but in fact the poor guy intended to play a similar Soviet secular character of "Grampa Frost", associated with New Year day, not with Christmas.
Though the populations is traditionally quite moderate (civil war in 90s was more a split of clans, not really "religious vs. secular" fight), Tajikistan is poor and unstable, and "opaque" border with Afghanistan makes it good place for revolutionary Islamist propaganda.
Apparently so. In fact, however, since the end of the Soviet Union, there has been a migration b/w the republics, and Russians previously living outside the Russian federation have returned there, while Uzbeks, Tajiks, Kazakhs, Ukrainians, et al have returned to their respective countries. For instance, Kazakhstan was something like 47% Russian in 1991, but that number is now in the ~20%, since most of those Russians have returned to Russia, while most Kazakhs have returned to Kazakhstan from Russia & elsewhere.
Anyway, Tajikistan is a country that traces its origins to the first Islamic rulers of Iran - the Saminids. So since independence, they've looked to Iran for guidance, in the same way that other republics like Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, et al have looked towards Turkey, or like Estonia has looked towards Finland. Radio Teheran broadcasts in Tajikistan, whose language is pretty similar to Farsi. So guess what - Iran's Islamization gets promoted in Tajikistan (despite Iran being Shia and Tajikistan being Sunni) and hence, incidents like this.
Given that Tajikistan is far isolated from Russia and under Iranian influence, I doubt that the Russians would oppose it islamizing in the way they would in the case of Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan.

Well, PMK—it is not so much acknowledging the existence of the new year itself as it is whether Muslims are permitted to engage in New Year celebrations—even of the teetotaler variety.
