Unfortunately, her dramatic protest will likely be in vain. The Qur'an says: "Good women are obedient....As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them" (4:34). Her protest will not change the respect accorded to that directive.

KABUL, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- "I have knocked any door to get rid of violence but all of my complaints have fallen to deaf ears. Instead, the prosecutor accused me of lying and warned me of dire consequence," a woman named Sadat revealed her ordeal in a weak voice while receiving treatment in Herat hospital.The bandaged wrapped image of the young woman showed by the private Tolo television on Wednesday tells of the nightmare she had faced in her in-laws home.
Sadat, 15, is a native of Herat province 640 km west of Afghan capital Kabul. She married a man five months ago, hoping to start a happy new life.
"I got married to a man in Sawa village of Anjil district five months ago. My husband and my father-in-law had beaten me without any reason several times. The repeated mistreatment had forced me to complain, but all in vain as the prosecutor in Herat city overlooked my petition and warned me to either withdraw the complaint or face imprisonment," the badly injured bride told Xinhua from her bed in hospital.
"The last time I sought justice on Monday, the prosecutor again warned me of dire consequence if I refuse to withdraw my complaints.
"Such behavior left me with no choice but self-immolation because it was the only way to get rid of violence and insult," the severely burned lady murmured in her bed.
The doctor treating her in Herat hospital was skeptical of her recovery.
"She is in critical condition as 80 percent of her skin is burned. she has only 20 percent chance to survive," a doctor in the hospital told Xinhua....

15 years old makes her a woman? In most places, this is not adulthood. It's childhood, and any sexual relations with her constitute statutory rape. Been doing a bit of reading recently about what our forefathers said about freedom of religion. They were adamant about freedom of religion, even freedom of non-Christian groups. However, they didn't throw open wide the door w/o making some requirements. They were to live in peace and they were to obey the Constitution of the US. Beating your wife and supporting Sharia law violate that trust. Once that happened, they were no longer guaranteed freedom of religion. This story and the one before it demonstrates exactly what the forefather's were talking about. Not everything goes and Muslim groups forfeit their rights when they support terrorist groups and when they deny American freedoms to their wives. Since Islam is a religion that has both a theological side and a government side, they violate freedom of speech, freedom of conscience and the pursuit of happiness. Therefore they do not have freedom of religion. Our forefathers did not approve of Islam.

Domestic violence is rampant in muslim households.
The more religious a family is, more is the abuse against women.
There is also always the threat of getting another wife if the current one complains.
And the husband doesn't even need to pay alimony.
Here, in India, one old, ailing, and abused muslim woman filed a suit on her husband for maintenance after he divorced her. She kept winning in all the courts, from the lowest courts to the highest court of the land and it came to a stage where the husband had no choice but to pay alimony.
At which point, the pro-muslim congress government, because of pressure from muslim groups, changed the laws ............. actually changed the laws (all decent people felt justifiably outraged) to make sure the muslim husband need not pay maintenance to his wife.
I cannot understand how muslim women willingly remain a part of a religion which sanctions abuse against them.

And in her desperation to be heard she burned herself, but why she didn't burn her husband instead; not that I would wish that any person be deliberately burned, but I do find it rather odd that she set herself on fire rather than her abuser. Seems backwards to me ...

As tragic as this is for the girl's future, which doesn't exist in this world, she made an extremely powerful statement which was, "Hey dad-in-law, hubby, EFF YOU! Try and hurt me or have sex with me now." This girl saw her future and gladly sacrificed it, as well as her life, to stop the abuse. The abuse must have been incredible for her to have made this choice.
This reminds me of that line in Braveheart where William Wallace is rallying the troops before the Battle of Stirling:

You know what strikes me most? This young girl is burned over 80% of her body, is almost certainly dying, and must be in unimaginable pain—and yet she *still believes this was her only way out*.
And she is not a "lady"—although bless Xinhua for showing her this respect and courtesy—but she is, at fifteen years old, *still just a girl*.
And the authorities—after ten years of US and other Western influence—not only refuses to help this poor abused child, but *threatens her with "dire consequence" if she does not withdraw her complaint.
The only reason Afghan Muslims are not stoning women in the streets is the US presence—and that will soon be gone.
Poor little thing. I hate Islam and its barbarities with a white-hot passion.
