What could the charge possibly be? Whoever did it didn't break any law except Sharia, which NATO has not (yet) adopted. And that's what this whole controversy is really all about: it's another Islamic supremacist attempt to force non-Muslims to abide by Sharia provisions.
"Afghanistan demands NATO put Koran-burners on trial," by Mirwais Harooni and Amie Ferris-Rotman for Reuters, February 23:
KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan wants NATO to put on public trial those who burned copies of the Koran at a NATO base, President Hamid Karzai's office said on Thursday, after a third day of bloody protests over the incident. It said NATO had agreed to a trial, but that could not be immediately confirmed.
Karzai had earlier accused a U.S. officer of "ignorantly" burning copies of the Koran, in an incident that has deepened anti-Western sentiment in a country NATO is trying to stabilize before foreign combat troops leave by the end of 2014.
Demonstrations have drawn thousands of angry Afghans to the streets, chanting "Death to America!" amid violence that has killed 11 people including two U.S. service personnel.
"NATO officials, in response to a request for the trial and punishment of the perpetrators ... promised this crime will brought to court as soon as possible," Karzai's office said in a statement.
President Barack Obama sent a letter to Karzai apologizing for the burning of the Korans, after Afghan laborers found charred copies while collecting rubbish at the sprawling Bagram air base.
Obama told Karzai the incident was not intentional.
The letter, which the White House said was a follow-up to a phone call earlier this week between the two leaders to discuss a "long-term partnership" between Washington and Kabul, was delivered to Karzai by U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker.
Karzai's office said in a statement Obama had promised to investigate those involved in the incident.
Karzai said the American officer had acted "out of ignorance and with poor understanding" of the Koran's importance, a presidential statement said....
Some recent entries here at 'Jihadwatch' about Muslims burning Bibles, persecuting Christians, etc, which Western 'leaders' have not opposed.

The sooner we move our troops out of that rat hole, the better.
For the sake of Non-Muslims, Freedom Of Speech, Freedom Of Conscience & Liberty,
the West demands NATO to stand up and protect Freedom! The West demands NATO to be un-islamic standing up for Liberty.
@Thomas
I remember when muslims burned bibles in Malawi last year, nobody said anything. And lets not even talk about rapes, imprisonment, killings, mass murder... etc against non-muslims.
Shame on Obama and his adminstration, what are they thinking? do they think no one is watching thier disgraceful, humiliating behaviour? Obama has to be a moslem for all this madness to make some sense

Ha ha, and these naive Americans think that they will bring democracy and freedom to this hell hole good luck. Pack up your bags and leave them alone and let them kill each other.
We want a President who is proud of being an American and who has a clear uderstanding of why our American values are much better than the rest of World's. A President who understands that the Islamic culture is barbaric from the 7th century and can not even be compared to ours which values individual liberty, freedom of speech and pursuit of happiness. SHAME on OBAMA and his lefties for apologizing to JIHADISTS instead of standing by and for the American People. What is wrong AMERICA? Get rid of this OBAMA, THE TRAITOR (A MUSLIM SPY?)
Is there any chance that the so-called "friendly", who brutally murdered 2 of our soldiers and wounded 4 more, might be tried for murder in a U.S. court or, better, to summarily face a firing squad? I think not because that would be rational in and irrational dhimmī world.
Amen to your sentiments. America should withdraw from all these Muslim Hell Holes and let them eliminate themselves. World peace will ensue, problem solved.
Take all the negative aspects of humanity and that is what Muslims and Islam represent.
What a putrid religion Islam truly is.
It should be axiomatic that we should strive to punish terrorist sponsoring states as much as possible while doing as little damage as possible to ourselves.
That's why I oppose sanctions against Iran: they do too much damage to us and our allies. The least painful solution is a quick military strike - the fallout would be containable through resolve.
In the Afghan and Iraq wars, only 10 percent of the costs were incurred to overthrow the existing regimes. The rest has been a total waste. And now we are beating ourselves up after having gotten WAY over-involved with these gavones.
But Sharia is the law of the land. The U.S. and NATO saw to that when they accepted the Afghan Constitution which stipulates, that all laws must be in accordance with Islam and the Islamic tradition.
The Constitution describes Islam as its sacred and state religion. A system of civil law is described, but no law may contradict the beliefs and provisions of Islam. It was widely reported that Sharia law is not specifically mentioned, but Hanafi jurisprudence is one of the six branches of Sharia law. Moreover, concessions are made to Shia jurisprudence in cases arising strictly between Shi'ites.
Followers of other religions are "free to exercise their faith and perform their religious rites" within the limits of the law. There is no mention of freedom of thought, and apostasy from Islam is punishable by death.
So of course the foreign troops are guests and must follow that law of the land, get special dispensation, or leave. The problem is that our troops did not leave Afghanistan when the Constitution was approved by the consensus in January 2004 after the 2003 loya jirga. It evolved out of the Afghan Constitution Commission mandated by the Bonn Agreement.
Because the Afghan Constitution is incompatible with democracy and Human Rights the U.S. should have declared "Mission accomplished" already in 2003 and left for good.
Now our troops are once more paying the price or held hostage because of our leaders complete ignorance of Islam and Islamic law creating a "mission impossible" we can only lose on all counts.
This situation is similar to if the Allied after the defeat of Nazism had allowed the Germans to make a Nazy Constitution, and once more outlaw the Jews from society.
It's becoming obvious that there's not that much difference between the Taliban and average Afghans -- it's the Americans who are way out of place.
The narrative that American aid/ financial would improve the lives of Afghans and thus reduce the tendency towards violent extremist is also obviously wrong and would do nothing to change the culture. Even if we were able to bring Afghanistan into the modern era it would still be a conservative Muslim/Sharia nation without any of our cultural values of freedom of speech, freedom of religion, separation of church and state, equal rights, protection of minorities.
I smell a lawsuit, after all Obama has already plead guilty on behalf of the US. Not only are we paying to defend Karzai against the Taliban, which appears to be some kind of factional despite between warlords, now we are going to pay for the right to enrich Karzai. Karzai cashing in big time.
Time to freeze his financial accounts.
What I don't understand is why they had any Afghans or non-US individuals at the place where they were burning material to begin with. In my view this is a serious mistake on part of the military not realizing how dangerous or sensitive the issue can be if it gets into the wrong hands....which it did.
Also, I do not understand what the military is thinking in terms of being there, since obviously the Afghans don't appreciate any of the western powers being there to try and help stabilize the region.
Now I am watching the news and 2 US soldiers have been killed. Just horrible. The US military needs to be more careful and realize that most of the Afghans working for them have their loyalties elsewhere.
sorry about the typos

factional dispute between warlords.
This is embarrassing.
As usual Andrew Bostom has some interesting facts to add to the discussion. Check out his blog. It appears our own military chaplaincy and Muslim doctrine detail the correct manner of destroying all 'holy' books when they are old or damaged. We should should be asking the Afgan government why they are not explaining to their people that destroying books in this manner is the accepted practice when disposing of damaged books, including the Koran.
Pray tell us what will be this so called relationship? Let me guess, we, that’s you and me, will send Afghanistan billions of dollars every year in return for keeping the rabid Taliban at bay and prevent them from taking over the government. While Afghanistan sends to the west their own citizens to sponge off us while spreading stealth jihad.
And if we ever withhold the Jiyza/aid they will say hey, the Taliban are at the doors of the government and about to take over. This will make us not only release the jiyza but increase it. Porkiestan is the model for this.
to make my previous comment clear this referances the following line from the article.

Here's my letter to Obama:
To whom it may concern, you are a limp-wristed faggot. Yours inimically, London Jim.
If they are put on trial and named, that will be a death sentence anyway, because whether found guilty or not, every low-life inbred psychopathic pedo-worshipper in America will be out kill them in order to get his 72 virgins.
Here is the account of the afghan fanatic Sayed Jamil who spread the word on the burning. Central statements, also showing Karzai's treacherous nature:
"I was ready to shed my blood and kill them or be killed."
"The boys gathered and started shouting 'Allah u Akbar', clutching fragments of burning text to their chests."
Eventually freed with the material, the men ran out into the streets, waking people up and shouting about the transgression
Their material was handed to Afghan government officials for evidence, while their actions were praised by Karzai.
"The Americans always do such blasphemy to test how strong our Muslim faith is."

Thomas, our socialist leaders on both sides of the Atlantic have been waging war against Christianity for almost two centuries. They'd love to see the last of it; even when, like Obama, they claim to be "Christian". When they invoke "Christ" or "Jesus", it's simply an empty banner into which anyone can pour whatever meaning he wants.
Now, back to the topic of the posting, the Afghans are such a depraved people that the discarding of Qur'ans admittedly defaced by prisoners (re Islam's strictures against marking the book) is a bigger issue than the violence that plagues their society on every level.
Sharia Law has no place in the civilized world.
Sharia Law has no place in the civilized world.
Sharia Law has no place in the civilized world.
Civil culture has laws that protect and support equal rights for all its citizens. Especially the women, all religions, minority groups, and the suppressed.
There is no room for 7th century barbaric crulity and non-sense in todays society.
Islam should judge themselves prior to judging others. If then you say you have no sin, you are a liar.
JewDog wrote: “It should be axiomatic that we should strive to punish terrorist sponsoring states as much as possible while doing as little damage as possible to ourselves.”
I’m in complete agreement with his statement and everything else he wrote. But this ought to have been done at least immediately after 9/11, if not years before. Take out Iran and Saudi Arabia, both of which have been waging war by stealth jihad and violent jihad against us – and especially Saudi Arabia, which funds so much subversive phenomena in the U.S., such as school textbooks that whitewash Islam.
We’ve adopted a policy of fighting Nazi soldiers without condemning the Nazi ideology, of fighting kamikaze soldiers without condemning Shintoism. But our “leaders” are afraid to condemn Islam or Shintoism because it’s a “peaceful religion.” No, it’s an ideology of conquest and totalitarianism. We should emasculate Iran before it can assemble and use a nuclear weapon, and reclaim all the oil fields seized by the Saudis with Western dhimmi compliance, as well as all the other assets seized by the various fiefdoms in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea. In Iran’s case, if that means using tactical nukes, so be it. The Saudis should be evicted from their palaces and their assets frozen. Let the fat parasites starve. No one should give a flying f—k what happens to that pack of moochers.
The U.S.’s presence in Afghanistan has been a disgrace from the beginning, because we went there as altruists wanting to convert barbarians to “democracy.” We went there bearing presents and gifts and all kinds of social programs – not to just find and extinguish bin Laden and his gang. And it’s Iran we should have invaded and toppled, not Iraq, which was a sideline player in terrorism.
But everything that’s happened since 9/11 has been the result of a policy that’s a combination of altruism and pragmatism. We’re under no obligation to bring “democracy” to any backwater country, only to defend ourselves from the killers and gangsters who live there. But, what do we have? We have a wussified military ready to submit to Sharia, a president who hates this country and enjoys humiliating it, and a growing police state here in this country.
"Afghanistan demands NATO adopt sharia".
Oh my, what the world has come to now. Can beggars be choosers. Yeah, only if the donors are PC MC numbed non-Muslims like us!!! Our Prez even sends them a written apology - can't even imagine if this happened!
Screw them an come home. Let them rot in their own filthy sharia, that is their fate .
On the news this morning there was a report about how many Afghans have been "displaced" by the war - some 400 every day.
I expect Western nations will be falling all over themselves offering refugees new homes in our already muslim-infested countries.
Put US soldiers on trial, find them guilty, and then what?
Public execution? Long sentences in an Afghan prison? Turn them over to the mob?...You want to make Americans mad and 'cause' them to vote for Ron Paul, just try something like this trial...
Second try...Put the US soldiers on trial, find them guilty, and then what? Public execution, long Afghan prison sentences? Turn them over to the mob? If you want to make Americans mad and 'cause' them to vote for Ron Paul, just try and have such a trial...
I hope the two U.S. service personnel died after expending all their ammunition. Say, whatever happened to that mohammadan village where the people were using pages of the koran as toilet paper, leaving those excrement smeared pages floating in their ditches? What was their punishment?
Doc, I agree fully. We won't change the mohammadans in ANY country, no more than we changed the Vietnamese, no matter how much we spend.
We want a President who does not bow, literally, to ANYONE, especially not to a filthy arab. Filthy, because they cleanse their anuses with their fingers, then wipe the fingers on a wall until the stink goes away, as the prophet commanded. They won't eat with that hand, but they do use it to shake hands with infidels. Vote AGAINST obama and all he stands for.
Here is the official US-Forces Information Paper on how to properly dispose of religious texts (surprise: Korans can be burned). Islam ist the last topic, so scroll down:
http://humancond.org/_media/analysis/handling_and_disposal_of_religious_items.pdf
And here is imam Jihad Turk, director of religious affairs at the Islamic Center of Southern California, explaining on 9/16/2011 that you properly dispose of a koran by - burning it:
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/episodes/september-16-2011/quran-disposal/9519/
Just as the Vietnamese working for us certainly had their loyalties elsewhere.
Did it occur to Obama to ask for an apology from Karzai when two American soldiers were shot dead by an Afghan "soldier" in a reported reaction to the Koran burnings? Or was Barry too busy grovelling?

Wow. That is what the American Militia Movement was concerned about, that the U.N. would supersede our Constitution and take over the U.S. They were being armed by jihadists, so apparently that is what they gleaned from them (macho groups using each other, each thinking they had the upper hand). Now, the American Militia Movement supports the U.S. Military (and may probably class with Obama's A.C.O.R.N. army). The jihadists also wanted to start a civil war in the U.S. so we would destroy ourselves and then they could step in. That is starting to happen also.
I am surprised that no one has raised what seems to me an obvious question: Could it not be that the men who "found" the offending materials actually put them there in order to find them and incite outraged rioting?
Our Military, with all of its prowess, is not a social service or nation-building organization equipped to have long run success in that barbaric alien arena.
Islam is simply not receptive to Western thinking...and, we're fooling ourselves if we don't accept that Islam is simply not wired the same as we are in the West.
We cannot co-exist. We Americans must assume we're in a Cold War.....with ad hoc outbursts of terrorism at a moment's whim the expected norm for the near future, perhaps indefinitely. We Americans must prepare ourselves for long term hostilities in the manner of the Soviet era.
They, in that arena, simply aren't worth the expenditure of further American lives ....there......for our own defense.
And, they (Islamists) as a whole, are not worth defending....each against the other.
These Islamists are simply itching to seek perceived grievous grudges against us....the accidental burning of their religious manual is only the most recent cultivated, feeding upon itself, self perpetuating example of Islamic intransigence.
Exactly.
Why don't we retain these very, very bloody lessons?
Let's write to Congress (www.congress.org):
Dear Representative:
Qur'ans were used in Afghanistan as a means of communications by the enemy combatants. Those ciphers/communiques were intercepted, confiscated, and destroyed so the enemy combatants could never have access to them. But, because Sharia law forbids the burning of Qur'ans, our President is apologizing and promising to follow Sharia law instead of U.S. law. The same tactic is used when enemy combatants hold up in mosques, and are assured of a safe place from which to shoot at U.S. troops. The same tactic is used when human shields are used and killed, and the responsibility is placed on U.S. troops instead of those who use human shields and the U.S. pays blood money (prescribed by Sharia law) to the families of human shields, accomplices, and jihadists themselves. Our troops were used like this for ten years with their hands tied and the enemy combatants protected by Sharia law. This weakening and killing off of our troops was only used to procure Islamic democracies with Islamic Constitutions enforced by Sharia law. Now, President Obama has sent our troops to Africa to fight against the only opposition force to the genocidal jihad conquering the oil-rich countries of Africa. This outrageous and seditious waste of the lives and health of U.S. troops must stop.
As a member of the United States Congress, I am asking and expecting you to put an end to enforcement of Sharia law by U.S. troops, to redefine the parameters when fighting against Islamic enemy combatants, to place the responsibility for using human shields, mosques, and Qur'ans squarely on the shoulders of those who use them, and to prohibit and forbid U.S. troops from being subjected to Sharia law, officially or unofficially. Let U.S. troops only be used to support the U.S. Constitution, let them only answerable to U.S. law, and only deployed when the safety of U.S. citizens is in eminent jeopardy. Station U.S. troops at U.S. borders and stop them from being used as pawns in the Muslim Brotherhood's global jihad.
Get the troops out of Afghanistan and get Obama out of office.
During the Battle of the Bulge, the American forces with little ammunition and little hope of resupply because of fog were approached under the white flag by the Germans and were asked to surrender. The reply that came from the Americans was one word "NUTS." Isn't it time that the American leadership in Afghanistan start replying the same way. Stop apologizing, stop the boot licking at the foot of Islam and use a term that has a meaning that Muslims probably would not understand but carries a lot of political clout to Americans and the western world. "NUTS"
During the Battle of the Bulge in the second world war, the Americans with little or no ammunition and with little chance of resupply because of bad weather were approached by the Germans under a white flag of truce and were asked to surrender.
The American commander replied using one word,
"NUTS."
Isn't it time that the American leadership stand up to this depraved religion, quit the boot licking on the foot of Islam.
Burn the Koran. Apologize! No! just say "NUTS."
David
you wrote -" I am surprised that no one has raised what seems to me an obvious question: Could it not be that the men who "found" the offending materials actually put them there in order to find them and incite outraged rioting?"
You're not the only one.
I have been wondering exactly the same thing.
Because such convenient 'finds' - or *claimed* 'finds' - of 'desecrated korans' or 'pages of burnt korans', etc - have been known to happen in the past: quite often in Pakistan, when the Muslims need an excuse to carry out a pogrom against a Christian village.
Afghanistan demands NATO adopt Sharia, put Qur'an-burners on trial -- Karzai says NATO agrees

Well, that what the OIC wants to see.
More:

Well, this is written in the passive voice. Apparently the actor here is "demonstrations" and "violence". Crazed, homicidal Muslim had nothing to do with it...
More:
"NATO officials, in response to a request for the trial and punishment of the perpetrators ... promised this crime will brought to court as soon as possible," Karzai's office said in a statement.

Karzai is either uttering a bald-faced lie, or else NATO is even more dhimmified than I think...
Can you imagine? Perhaps the "noble people of Afghanistan"—General Allen's words during his cringing apology—would tear their victims limb from limb and then *eat them*. Certainly, pious Muslim mobs have done this with their victims before...
Iran is not afghanistan. A military strike may be necessary. I can see how that is 100% in Israels interest. It is not however necessarily in the interest of the United States. Many Iranians felt cheated out of their last presidential election. Iran is a sophisticated society any many respects. The ayatola didn't just wave the quran over them and make them go away. People were pissed off. Furthermore your average Iranian dude on the street does not have a seething hatred for the west- but he could. Pakistan is not exactly an ally anymore. Perhaps they represent a greater threat to the U.S. than Iran. One thing is clear about Israels desire to bomb Iran... The United States could actually have a better relationship with them- Israel never.
