Afghanistan takes a breather from its self-immolation in rage to issue a statement. Who in the U.S. military establishment will be the fall guys? The people who followed orders? The people who gave them? And who will conduct the trial, and what range of punishments are possible?
NATO must know full well that it is validating a process that, for many of its backers, can only rightly end through retribution in blood, and even that will not be the end; it will never be enough, because the response is not rational in the first place, and therefore has no rational end point. In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most CompassionateFollowing the insulting and shameful act of burning Quran in Bagram airbase that injured the religious sentiments of the Islamic world and particularly of the Afghan Muslim nation, two delegations comprising of representatives from government, the National Council of Ulemma and the National Assembly were assigned and dispatched to investigate the circumstances and causes that have led to the inhumane incident.
The delegations, while deeply touched by the religious sentiments shown by the Afghan Muslim and Mujahid nation, inform our citizens of the following:
1. In view of the particular security situation in the country, we call on all our Muslim citizens of Afghanistan to exercise self-restraint and extra vigilance in dealing with the issue and avoid resorting to protests and demonstrations that may provide ground for the enemy to take advantage of the situation.
2. After the shameful incident by the US soldiers stationed in Bagram, senior NATO and American officials expressed their deep apologies to the Muslim nation of Afghanistan and assured that such incidents will not happen again.

I'm also of the opinion that this probably won't happen, but knowing the Obama administration's history of pandering to Muslims in general and radical Islam in particular, nothing would surprise me.

Qur'ans were used in Afghanistan as a means of communications by the enemy combatants. Those ciphers/communiques were intercepted, confiscated, and destroyed so the enemy combatants could never have access to them. But, because Sharia law forbids the burning of Qur'ans, our President is apologizing and promising to follow Sharia law instead of U.S. law. The same tactic is used when enemy combatants hold up in mosques, and are assured of a safe place from which to shoot at U.S. troops. The same tactic is used when human shields are used and killed, and the responsibility is placed on U.S. troops instead of those who use human shields and the U.S. pays blood money (prescribed by Sharia law) to the families of human shields, accomplices, and jihadists themselves. Our troops were used like this for ten years with their hands tied and the enemy combatants protected by Sharia law. This weakening and killing off of our troops was only used to procure Islamic democracies with Islamic Constitutions enforced by Sharia law. The problem to stripping religion from a society of 1.5 billion people is the logistics. There is simply not enough manpower in the west to do so. If it were even possible it would require the armies of China, Russia, Europe, and others as well as the United States.
Hypothetically, we would need to, for starters:
1. Wait for a casus belli necessary to start the necessary ensuing brutality to bring an entire region of the world to it's knees by nuclear, or massive conventional means. A potential casus belli might be a cataclysmic nuclear war started by a Muslim nation. Sadly, this probably means Israel's destruction.
2. Demolish the Kabaa and shoot the black stone into space in a random and unknowable direction. This way no hajj can ever be made again and the direction to pray can never again be known.
3. Every single mosque, in the east and west would need to be razed to the ground. All Muslims in the west would need to be deported to middle east.
4. The religious leadership would need to be killed outright. All religious texts with few exceptions in the Middle East would need to be destroyed, including the Quran -- however reading of the Qur'an and Hadith would need to become mandatory to understand that Islam is irredeemably violent.
5. The public preaching of Islam would have to become a crime punishable by re-education or death. A secret police would need to be created to help enforce this. Look to former soviet countries for the model.
7. A comprehensive policy of re-education would need to be instituted. The Chinese have considerable experience with the necessary thought reform Milieus. Those who fail such programs should be killed, however these programs are generally very very effective and rarely involve violence. Read Robert J Lifton if you need and outline. Elements of the thought reform program, where possible, should be extended into society in general (confession groups, for example).
8. Western culture and all the sex, drugs, and rock and roll it entails would need to be state sponsored to help eradicate the culture of Islam. Among other things, Islamic sexual morality needs to be turned on it's head.
9. Secular education for kids would become mandatory. No religion should be taught. Islam should be taught only as much as to show it's inferiority to western belief systems, and how it helped to bring about the destruction of the middle east. Children should be indoctrinated to act as enforcers for the state's viewpoints. The would report on their parents and be rewarded for doing so.
10. Resistance would need to require group punishment akin to what the SS would do to French towns in response to resistance. The response to a bombing might be to line up 100 random people and mow them down. Next time, kill 250, then 500, then a thousand and so on. Letting bombings go unpunished would likely result in more. The 100 or so killed would, in the long run, be a lot less than the bodycount of successive bombings.
Only after at least a generation could these restraints be loosened a bit and the Middle east given some autonomy. In short, we would need to pull off something between a Chinese "cultural revolution" and a Christian "Great Persecution". If you want to strip Islam from middle east society, that's just about what it'll require, if it's even possible. Of course in all this, you end up becoming exactly what you hate -- just understand that if you're really advocating removing a religion from 1.5 billion people, this is what will be necessary.
I'd argue it's a lot easier, and far more human, to maintain a policy of seperation and containment -- deport the muslims -- seperate east from west -- establish energy independence -- and wait for their society to modernize and/or implode on it's own.
