The protests sparked clashes with Afghan security forces that left at least five demonstrators dead. A Norwegian soldier was wounded by a hand grenade hurled into a coalition compound.

White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One that Obama's apology to Karzai was "appropriate given the sensitivity" of the issue. He said the apology was part of a three-page letter to the Afghan leader. Presidential apologies are rare, but he noted that former White House press secretary Dana Perino apologized on behalf of President George W. Bush in 2008 after a U.S. serviceman shot a Quran.
Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the National Security Council at the White House, said Obama's letter, which addressed issues being negotiated in the partnership document, was delivered by Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan. In the letter, Obama expressed "regret and apologies over the incident in which religious materials were unintentionally mishandled." Vietor said
Karzai met Thursday with parliamentarians — many of whom had been particularly vitriolic Wednesday in calling for Afghans to wage a holy war against international forces. The Afghan president told the lawmakers they were right to raise their voices against the desecration of Islam's holy book, but said a government investigation was the appropriate way to handle the case, according to a statement issued by his office.
The statement said Karzai told the lawmakers that a U.S. officer responsible for the burning "didn't understand" what he was doing and that the United States had "accepted the mistake of its officer."
The coalition said the investigation is still under way.
The unrest started Tuesday when Afghan workers at the sprawling American base north of Kabul noticed that Qurans and other Islamic texts were in the trash that coalition troops dumped into a pit where garbage is burned. Some Afghan workers burned their fingers as they tried to salvage some of the books. Afghan government officials said initial reports indicated four Qurans were burned.
The materials had been taken from a library at Parwan Detention Facility, which adjoins the base, because they contained extremist messages or inscriptions. Writing inside a Quran is forbidden in the Islamic faith, and it is unclear whether the handwritten messages were found in the holy book or other reading materials.
But the Muslim rioters don't seem to be upset about that.
Obama should be apologizing to the Pastor Yocef or the blogger Mr. Hamza Kashgari.
Obama is the true apostate from Islam, not either of these men. Obama should be on trial for apostasy in Saudi Arabia or Iran and not these men.

Often, it seems to be the case. The only way to gain respect from totalitarian or thug rulers is by means of physical or violent protest. Heredi in Jerusalem understand this concept. Their sometimes violent protests over 'immodesty' in dress, gay pride days, Sabbath violation, etc., no matter how odious some think them, earn them respect from the government. Law-abiding residents of Gush Katif went peaceably from Gaza, August 2005 and have been treated miserably by the government ever since. Many of these people remain virtually homeless, abandoned and betrayed by their government. Jews living in Judea and Samaria internalized these harsh lessons.

Agreed, wildjew. But more important than the Catholic Church supporting the general taxpayer at large, (whether Catholic or not), for footing the bill for healthcare for the poor, a job traditionally embraced by charities like the Catholic Church itself, is the Church's unilateral support for amnesty and unchecked immigration, most specifically from the southern U.S. border.
The obvious impetus for their position, to fill the church pews and by extension, stuff their coffers through the collection trays, is short-sighted and nothing less than insidious. This is a compelling argument as to why the Catholic Church is wholly wrong on this issue. Given the current PC climate of the West, and the U.S. in particular, this is a by-product to opening Pandora's Box in my estimation.
While encouraging mass unchecked immigration, no established institution based on a purported moral foundation can encourage favor of one group over another, for that would be perceived as discriminatory, regardless of the mountains of empirical evidence, supported by the doctrinal texts of one particular group over all others.
Catholic empathy is a main component which is aiding and abetting Muslim immigration and expansion to the West and the U.S., hence the growing problem documented here at this site on a daily basis.

I agree 100% about the hypocrisy of the Roman Church hierarchy wanting the American taxpayer to foot the bill for their charities when it should be churches themselves doing the job. What was the institution of the diaconate all about back in Acts 6? I'm not alone among Protestants who support small government and urge churches to take back charitable work.
As for immigration, though, being a teacher of ESOL, I note that a lot of Latin American immigrants (whether legal or illegal) are Evangelical, Pentecostal, or Adventist. The last-named makes a point of seeing the Pope as anti-Christ.
But, to return to the topic, the contrast between the Obama administration's attempts to short-circuit Christian conscience at home and its obsequiousness towards Islam abroad, it's loud condemnations of the obscure Terry Jones, it's failure to take a "teaching moment" to speak about the First Amendment, all underscore how we Americans had a fit of collective idiocy during the 2008 election cycle.
