Saudis used Interpol's "red notice" system to track down columnist who insulted Muhammad

This is the international equivalent of calling 911 because your pizza delivery is late.

It is bad enough if the Saudis are persecuting alleged "blasphemers" on their own dime, but to hijack an international system designed to assist law enforcement in tracking down the perpetrators of actual crimes for their own ridiculously disordered priorities is a presumptuous, arrogant abuse of resources that must not be allowed to pass without comment. Nor should the fact that Interpol let its resources be expropriated for that purpose.

Hamza Kashgari may wind up dead for it. An update on this story. "Interpol accused after journalist arrested over Muhammad tweet," by Owen Bowcott for the Guardian, February 11:

Interpol has been accused of abusing its powers after Saudi Arabia used the organisation's red notice system to get a journalist arrested in Malaysia for insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

Whose prophet?

Police in Kuala Lumpur said Hamza Kashgari, 23, was detained at the airport "following a request made to us by Interpol" the international police cooperation agency, on behalf of the Saudi authorities.

Kashgari, a newspaper columnist, fled Saudi Arabia after posting a tweet on the prophet's birthday that sparked more than 30,000 responses and several death threats. The posting, which was later deleted, read: "I have loved things about you and I have hated things about you and there is a lot I don't understand about you … I will not pray for you."

More than 13,000 people joined a Facebook page titled "The Saudi People Demand the Execution of Hamza Kashgari".

Clerics in Saudi Arabia called for him to be charged with apostasy, a religious offence punishable by death. Reports suggest that the Malaysian authorities intend to return him to his native country.

Kashgari's detention has triggered criticism by human rights groups of Malaysia's decision to arrest the journalist and of Interpol's cooperation in the process.

Jago Russell, the chief executive of the British charity Fair Trials International, which has campaigned against the blanket enforcement of Interpol red notices, said: "Interpol should be playing no part in Saudi Arabia's pursuit of Hamza Kashgari, however unwise his comments on Twitter.

"If an Interpol red notice is the reason for his arrest and detention it would be a serious abuse of this powerful international body that is supposed to respect basic human rights (including to peaceful free speech) and to be barred from any involvement in religious or political cases."

He called on Interpol to stand by its obligations to fundamental human rights and "to comply with its obligation not to play any part in this case, which is clearly of a religious nature".

Interpol, which has 190 member countries, has a series of coloured notice systems that police forces around the world use to pass on requests for help. Contacted at its headquarters in Lyon, France, the organisation did not immediately reply to requests for comment on the Kashgari case.

In response to past criticisms of the red notice system, it has said: "There are safeguards in place. The subject of a red notice can challenge it through an independent body, the commission for the control of Interpol's files (CCF)."

Last year Interpol was accused by Fair Trials International of allowing the system to be abused for political purposes when it issued a red notice for the arrest of the Oxford-based leader of an Asian separatist movement, Benny Wenda, who has been granted asylum and has lived in the UK since 2003.

Ah!

Those who insult Muhammad can be tracked down by the International Police Agency? Isn't that reassuring?

I wonder who would say Muhammad is a mass murderer, psychopath, terrorist, pedophile that is venerated in a strikingly similar manner as Christians venerate Jesus, after this little occurrence...

I wonder...

You appeal the decision of the bureaucracy through another bureaucracy? It sounds like the movie Brazil.

This is meant to be applied in a fuller context.

The spirit of the West*: I would not keep rubbed in a cage a wing that would be free.

The spirit of the East**: I will rub you out if you would be free.

*Poet Edna St Vincent Millay
** Especially muslims, but hindus and sikhs as well.

INTERPOL Notices are international alerts allowing police in member countries to share CRITICAL CRIME RELATED information.

The RED NOTICE system applies to crimes notably genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

And here is a journalist captured by a compliant INTERPOL involved itself in a CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY and the hypocritical western nations remain silent!

Shame on you Obama, shame on you Hilary Clinton shame on every western head of state for not speaking out.

INTERPOL helps in the execution of a 23 year old Saudi journalist for tweeting that he would not pray for Muhammad!

Muhammad required Muslims to pray for him because he suspected he knew where he was going after death.

If I believed in heaven and hell I would also be sure where he was headed.

I can picture it now. 3am and you wake up to thunderous knocking on your front door in sleepy suburbia, you rub the sleep from your eyes, grab your dressing gown, go downstairs and open the door to be greeted by a dozen armed policemen and a man in a suit clutching an arrest warrant, "Mr-------," He says, "I would like you to accompany me to Jedda in view of the fact that on the 1st of this month you did say in the red lion during happy hour that muhammad married a six year old girl and didn't have full sex with her until she was nine years old. Of course I must caution you that just because it is mentioned in the koran and the hadiths doesn't give you the right to mention the fact in a public place where you might upset undercover muslims who are the best of people.

This singular case needs to have the spotlights kept full-on it. . .it is very, very important, not only for the poor individual who has found himself suddenly thrust upon the global stage with the Sword of Damoclese swinging about over his head. . I feel that it is one of those catalytic instances in history where one man's plight can steer the future years. I pray for that man.

Appalling behavior from Interpol.

This is from Interpol's Wikipedia page.

" In order to maintain as politically neutral a role as possible, Interpol's constitution forbids it to undertake any interventions or activities of a political, military, religious, or racial nature. "

They've clearly violated their own policy. Someone needs to resign and leaders from the free world need to speak out.

The same Saudi ruler that Bush walked holding hands with like a couple of school girls. The same Islam that Bush released the most harmful meme of a generation, the Orwellian "religion of peace" lie.

No case as yet been registered against the journalist arrested; how could Interpol become an agent of Saudi fascism in a non-registered case? This is lawlessness and islamic fascism.

This case of Interpol's flagrant abuse of its police power is yet more evidence that the United States should never, under any circumstances whatsoever, subject itself to any type of foreign court, rules, or arbitration authority.

International organizations do not have the constraints of a government in a democratic, secular state, where the quality of justice is roughly related to voting results. In other words, it is easy for international organizations with enormous power and influence to be co-opted by dedicated ideologues.

It is far better to endure the inconvenience of having to negotiate bilateral agreements with multiple countries, rather than have a centralized organization with enormous power and discretion, not answerable to any particular group or country.

I always thought INTERPOL was a top flight organization, that was not in league with terrorist countries.

Note Well! It's the Saudis who used INTERPOL to track down "blasphemers" - as said in the commentary "on their dime" - or should we use - in their 'sublet'.
Easy to see how the extremes of a political philosophy can be employed, "Last year Interpol was accused by Fair Trials International of allowing the system to be abused for political purposes".
Whether we call it propaganda, catechism or lawfare; or the orchestration of all, as uniquely tied as Islam, this is a political action.
But, then again, Heydrich was the Reich's man on INTERPOL. Imagine the Knights of Columbus asking for help from the cabanieri, or DeMolay the French DSCE.
(I almost suggested the absurdity of the Black Panthers serving as Federal Marshalls - but caught myself. They've outdone that.)

You can leave a message on the Interpol site at http://www.interpol.int.... at the bottom right of the homepage is a CONTACT INTERPOL click on this and then on the next page in blue is E-Mail contact interpol. Click on this and you get a panel in which to type your message

There is always the possibility that the Saudis lied to Interpol and accused the hapless Tweeter of a criminal offense.

Islamic hellholes have their own human rights charter which guarantees human rights as stipulated by Sharia and only the ill-informed, ignorant, or useful idiot crowd believe that Sharia affords human rights as we understand them. This should be headline news but I haven't heard a word about anywhere but here and don't expect to. What a shame such a young, naive man has to die to appease the blood thirsty islamic demons. It appears that he was on the verge of rational, independent thought and if islam is to survive, that must be met with swift and severe punishment before it spreads.

Interpol was treating the accusation of apostasy as if it were a real (civil) crime and cooperated with an ally as if this was a legitimate criminal investigation. Is Interpol in the business of enforcing Sharia law as a legitimate and equal legal system? Sharia law should be seen as the enforcement of a cult on society and not given political recognition at all. If Muslims attempt to enforce Sharia law over and above the civil law, let them be tried for their crimes of sedition, as well as the theft, extortion, lying to authorities, abuse, rape, and murder that Sharia law condones.

Force the issue in the UN and see which countries cave to SA. Will our State Dept even issue a statement? Will our news media even cover it (hello Fox News!)? Will the DoJ agree or disagree with Interpol?

Update: Interpol is denying it was involved in this case:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/feb/10/interpol-journalist-arrested-muhammad-tweet
"But Interpol later denied that its notice system had been involved in
the arrest of Kashgari. A statement issued by the agency said: "The assertion that Saudi Arabia used Interpol's system in this case is wholly misleading and erroneous."
Interpol, the statement said, "has not been involved in the case involving a Saudi blogger arrested in Malaysia and deported to Saudi Arabia. No Interpol channels, its National Central Bureaus in Kuala Lumpur and Riyadh nor its General Secretariat headquarters in Lyon, France were involved at any time in this case.""

Ah yes. Terry Gilliam's masterpiece.

It also sounds like another masterpiece written by a guy named Franz, and it had something to do with castles, didn't it?

This is the international equivalent of calling 911 because your pizza delivery is late.
..................................

Actually—with all respect—it is *much, much worse than that*.

It is rather like calling 911 because your slave has escaped—and you want him back so you can publicly execute him as a warning to your other slaves...
