Spencer: Obama: Jimmy Carter's second term

In Human Events this morning I discuss the latest disastrous turn of Obama's disastrous presidency:

Last week the Egyptian Government announced that it intends to put 19 Americans on trial for fomenting anti-government protests – a charge they deny. Protests from the Obama administration have so far been futile, met with sneers of contempt.

If you’re of a certain age, this should sound familiar. On Nov. 4, 1979, Iranian thugs stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took 52 Americans hostage. Jimmy Carter’s government wrung its hands in futility for the next 14 months, until finally the Islamic Republic released the hostages Jan. 20, 1981, the day Ronald Reagan took office as President of the United States.

The bitter irony in all that was that Carter had betrayed the Shah of Iran, a longtime U.S. ally, and thereby paved the way for the ascent to power of the Ayatollah Khomeini and the Iranian mullahcracy that has ruled Iran ever since. Rather than feel gratitude toward Carter, however, Khomeini viewed his abandonment of the Shah as a sign of weakness, and pressed forward with his jihad against the Great Satan.

Iran has been hostile toward the United States since then, including gleeful predictions of our nation’s imminent demise. Just days ago, Iran’s Supreme Leader, the Ayatollah Khamenei, declared to an enthusiastic Tehran crowd that “in light of the realization of the divine promise by almighty God, the Zionists and the Great Satan (America) will soon be defeated….Allah’s promises will be delivered and Islam will be victorious.”

As the Iranian regime inches ever closer toward constructing nuclear weapons, as even Hillary Clinton has acknowledged, these words become more than just empty braggadocio and saber-rattling. The U.S. and Israel have one man to thank for the advent of a genocide-minded regime that considers them both the most implacable of enemies, is not deterred by the prospect of millions of its own people dead, and is racing toward completion of a nuclear weapon.

That man, of course, is Jimmy Carter. And he’s back.

In June 2009, when Barack Obama made his appeal to the Muslim world from Cairo, he stipulated that leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood be allowed to attend – despite the fact that at that time the Brotherhood was still an outlawed group. As the regime fell, Obama exulted: “We’ve borne witness to the beginning of new chapter in the history of a great country and a longtime partner of the United States.” Obama signaled his willingness to open talks with the Muslim Brotherhood, and gave every indication that he would not oppose the establishment of an Islamic state in Egypt. Now, Egypt rushes headlong toward becoming a Sharia state and adopts a posture of increasing hostility toward the United States.

The parallels are so close, they’re eerie. The Shah of Iran was no champion of human rights, and neither was Mubarak. That gave the opposition groups to both an opportunity to appeal to the world’s conscience as the great hope of their people to live at last in dignity – an opportunity that both exploited with great aplomb. Both the Shah and Mubarak were relatively secular rulers who for decades held at bay the pro-Sharia Islamic supremacist forces that despised and longed to topple them. Both had imperfect but workable relationships with the U.S. and helped foster stability in troubled regions.

Both the Shah and Mubarak ran afoul of Leftist Democrat presidents who positioned their betrayal of these allies as a responsibility necessitated by their commitment to human rights. These presidents appeared naïve to many, but may not have been wrongfooted by events: Jimmy Carter praised the Ayatollah Khomeini as a fellow “man of faith,” and Barack Obama’s Muslim upbringing (aside from the rumors about his actual religious affiliation) appear to have given him a warmly positive view of Islam and Sharia. Both may have viewed the demise of the regimes that the U.S. had supported as a positive development, an expression of the self-determination of the people of each country, and the installation of the rule of a religion that was – they believed – truly moderate, peaceful and tolerant at its core.

Carter and Obama got the regimes they wanted. They got the expression of “democracy” that they assured the American people would usher in a new era of peace and freedom. They made their decisions based on politically correct falsehoods. And in both cases, as is increasingly clear in Egypt, innocent Americans have had to pay for their myopia.

Carter is back. And there is no Reagan in the offing.

"The Shah of Iran was no champion of human rights .... That gave the opposition groups ... an opportunity to appeal to the world’s conscience."

Yes, I well remember the graffiti in the Paris (where the Ayatollah was in exile) metro in the '70's: "A bas la Shah!"
Well, the Shah went down; and within five or ten years there were demonstrations and petitions in Paris against the Ayatollah's regime.
The moral? Be careful what you wish for.

For me obama stopped being a US president when he refused to support the dissidents in iran when they tried to topple the regime. It was as if obama declared then that the US will only help topple a regime where such toppling will lead to more islam and less secularism.

I remember when Reagan was running for President back in 1980 and, while he was packing a small bag to fly to yet another political gathering, was asked what he thought of the new Iranian rulers. His reply was terse and accurate. He said, "They're barbarians."

Ain't ever gonna' get this from Mr. Hope and Change unless he's talking about Republicans. Obama not only has bad ideas. He can't even figure out who America's real enemies are.

True, there is no Reagan in sight. I just hope and pray that one emerges before the muslim in chief gets in again.

However, in Deo confidimus ...

I agree completely. Obama's decision was a moral failure.

Robert: I have to totally disagree with you on this subject. the Shah and his policies are the reasons that mullahs are runnung the show. he was a tyrant to the core who did not do jack for our country in contrast to the popular belief. he was a thief. there was nothing carter or any other president could do to stop the 1979 revolution. nothing. everyone in Iran was behind it including myself. middle easterns out side of Israel have no expirirence with democracy as you well know democracy is a work in progress. we had no idea that this regim. I was glad then and I glad now that the shah is gone. he was vile to say the least.
the out come is also not so bad. this regim too will be gone. much sooner than later and you will then see the hatred of our people in Iran with Islam. this then would be the demise of Islam in Iran. this one you can take to the bank.
M

The problem with the Shah in Iran and Mubarak in Egypt was not that they were dictators but that they were leaders in countries with largely ISLAMIC POPULATIONS.
A secular dictator is ABOUT THE BEST that you can hope for in an islamic country.
A secular dictator who is dedicated to eradicating islam within that country and educating the population in Western Civilizatioin would be ABSOLUTELY THE BEST the you could hope for.
Think of MacArthur in Japan after WWII.

A democratically elected islamic leader who subscribes to the islamic concept of democracy ( one man, one vote, one time ) or ( riding the democratic trolley to the islamic-sharia destination ) is a prescription for a "Thousand Years of Darkness".
It's time for Western people to stand up for the superiority of Western Civilization.

Failure to understand the above applies even to Bush's misguided attempt to bring democracy to Iraq - can't be done with a largely islamic population.
And the same applies even to removing Kadafi in Libya.
Ataturk tried and failed in Turkey.

This really is a case of "the perfect is the enemy of the good".
Leftists fool people into thinking that if we get rid of the undemocratic, brutal dictator then what follows will automatically be perfect.
And so many people fall for this illogic.
Of course the real intention of people who push this line, if they are not just plain delusional, is to hasten the world wide islamic caliphate.
Or, in the case of Leftists, they are using islam as a tool to destroy free democratic countries, or West leaning autocracies, so they can build their Socialist / Communist Utopia on the rubble of Western Civilization.

This brings up the whole question of the PREREQUISITES of DEMOCRACY.
Democracy does not stand on it's own.
John Adams said “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
And that's only one of the "prerequisites of democracy".
Google it, someone should write a book, openlibrary.org shows 2 hits.

Carter put "human rights" for communists above national security, and the Soviets followed with their infamous winning-streak.

Reagan? Yah, he undid some of Carterism, but he also ordered a mission to Lebanon which resulted in US trained troops fighting US troops. And he pulled out after almost 300 Americans were murdered in a suicide bombing supported by Iran, a country from which he bought arms for Central American allies. But did he "fix the economy"? During his administration, his accumulated deficits exceeded the total deficits incurred during the entire existence of the US. And the economy didn't turn until his second term, which he won on a "stay the course" slogan. The Soviet Union didn't collapse until Bush senior became President. And the Chernobyl nuclear incident had more to do with the collapse than did Reagan policy. Reagan never understood the folly of jihad subsidy. His "Somalia" and "Kosovo" was: the Lebanon Marine Barracks (Note - Reagan administration officials forced Marines to guard the Barracks gates with unloaded guns.)

Totally agree Vladtepes.

Miriam,

I am pleased by your optimism that islam's days in Iran are numbered, but you say this again and again with providing any details.

I would love to learn just how they will accomplish this. You say you talk with your family daily, and hear all the latest scuttlebut, so tell us: What is going on over there amongst the "average" Iranian.

I would love nothing more for the Persians to drop that phoney arab cult and return to their true roots, but at what cost?

Have a great evening there in NYC.

Jimmy Barack o'carter. It rhymes. Well Barry is fond of changing his name maybe that would help his re-election.

If those 'prisoners' go on trial in the new democratic Egypt, what can obi'one do about it. He personally endorsed the revolution, so he'll have to trust their system.

If he makes to much fuss and they refuse to let them go it will make the Prez look a bit daft. But i suspect that just before the election they'll be miraculously released and hay-presto the approval ratings of the incumbant shoot up.

The prez may have to pay the jizya for this outcome, but i'm sure he's prepared to pay the going price for continued leadership of a country.

Well, I have been referring to him as Rasulullah or Rasool for short, for a long time... Now, he is proving me right...We swami's have a way of staying ahead of the curve...You don't have to thank me, just throw money...if you can't throw it this far, toss it over to Robert...He needs it far more than I do...

'there is no Reagan in the offing.....'

Well we can at least be grateful for that I suppose.

This would be the same Reagan that armed and financed the so-called Mujahidin in Afghanistan?

That turned out well. They're probably still using some of the same guns.

Reagan gave Bin Laden his start.
Obama gave Bin Laden his end.

Whatever else is the case, that's a fact.

Miriam, thank you for saying this and although I want to avoid the liberal reaction of blaming everything on the west I think you are right about the Shah. Plus it goes way back beyond this. The western powers have been interfering in Iran/Persia for a long, long time. Before the US it was Britain and Russia.

I believe BP got its start as the 'Anglo-Persian Oil Company'.
That should tell you something.

I say all this without diminishing my loathing for the present regime in Iran and I am so sorry that they are there.

What never ceases to amaze me is how despite all this how many Iranians/Persians are friendly to the west despite this country having an anti-western government. In contrast to Saudi-Arabia which appears to be the opposite. A government that likes us and people who don't.

I can only put this down to the fact that when you have a 4000 year old culture you tend to take the long view, so to speak.

I'm not too sanguine about Islam leaving Iran anytime within my lifetime but I still wish everyone there my best and that's why I don't want war with this country.

Thanks for your wise comments.

You fight the enemy du jour. That's what Reagan did. In his time it was Communism. In FDR's time it was Nazism. Might as well blame FDR for financing and aligning with Stalin as blame Reagan for financing and aligining with the enemies of Marxist ideology. Would you have done differently? If so, please explain why? So tired of Monday-morning quarterbacks.

Have to agree with Wellington here, all of our leaders make mistakes, big and small. It is what humans do.

Obama to me is a daily dose of "oh-no" every time the news comes up on the T.V. And I mean every day.

This just in..

http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/obama-Nuclear-Weapons-reductions/2012/02/14/id/429403?s=al&promo_code=E2CE-1

Do you know what it will cost to rebuild this, if it would ever have to be replaced quickly? I know it is more than the money, but that's another part of the news for tomorrow.

Yesterday he gave loans to build a Nuclear plant, one that will take up to 15 Billion to complete. A plant that is not using updates learned from the failures on Japan's Nuclear disaster.

I think keeping the bombs, but tossing the reactor build is the ticket, but I did not go to his church.

No, no, the situation is infinitely worse.
Carter was just a fool.
Obama is a probable non-U.S. citizen (not at birth, but from Indonesian naturalization) and, with equal probability, has been a Comintern agent for all or most of his adult life to date. Moreover, American officials fear to investigate him because he has duped them into thinking his father was a black man. He could destroy America.

"Carter is back. And there is no Reagan in the offing."

This is the alarming thing.....we must keep this in mind this coming November, and we Americans must never, ever permit ourselves to be so snookered again by the likes of this charlatan Obama.

there is 0% middle class left in Iran. most of the wealth is in the hands on IRCG. there are significant division within the iranian government. huge. the people are fed up. remmber 75% of Iranians are under 30 years old. they don't or give a s.. about the shah and theu despise this regim. in Iran selling your kidney is legal so long as it is not for forgners. young men and womne are selling their kidneys for a mere $2000.00 so they can get by. average Iranian like my own brother who is a cab driver is making $400.00 a month while the prices of one Kilo (2lbs) is hovering around $20.00!!! you see what I mean? when I left Iran rial to $ was one to one. 70 rials to a $. it is now 20000 rials to a $. merchents are no longer accepting rials and they demand $$/or euros. it is a dire situtation. as for the arab cults, Iranian despise the arabs as much as jew despising the nazis. it has always been the case. I have a ten year old nephew living in Canada and I talk to him often and I tell him that muslims are terrorists! he genunly gets upset and says it is the arabs and we are persians.
at what cost? i would say it is going to bery bloody. as what we call a blood bath. what will make their faster and damn near for sure is the fall of syrian government.
Hope this is satisfactory.
M

you are correct that BP was started there. the Iranians hate them. as you know BP stands for British Petrolium, and in Farsi they nalled it Benzine Pars!!!! very deceptive. Iranian love Americans. among much older Iranians people in theri 70s and 80s. there is still a resenment toward americans for helping the Shah oust prime minister Mosedegh. but that is niether here no there. as for Islam leaving Iran: I should have been more clear: look people are going to belive in god. what I was trying to say is that if you remmber say the 13th century of the power that the catholic church exerted. but now it is reformed. so it will be like this in Iran.
hope this makes sense.
M

Miriam,

Thank you for the reply. You didn't quite answer my question, but I will take your assessments as "proof" that something will happen.

Have a good day!

Oh please, not that again about arming bin Laden's mujahideen. The primary threat to world peace at that time was the Soviet Union. America's policy was to render aid to any group that was resisting Soviet expansion. Radical Islam - at that time - was the lesser danger.

And how exactly did helping Osama in the 80s serve to anger him and his followers against the USA? How does helping him at one time in the past somehow make America DESERVE his retribution? If anything the past aid should have softened his anger at American encroachment on "Muslim lands". Theoretically, having had NO aid in the past from the Americans would have given him MORE rhetorical ammunition against America.

Hi Wellie, so hard to keep a discussion going on JW as the posters are so prolific that when you log on there's another 20 new articles but as you asked a question here goes:

Sorry you think I'm a Monday Morning QB, actually I've always hated Reagan so I'm being consistent. I think this historical retrospective of him 'ending the cold war' is bullshit and MMQBing in of itself.

I thought he was a lying bastard who brutalised people in Central America tolerating right-wing death squads to 'save' them from Communism and even sold arms to the Iranians, the very ones who are still giving us trouble.

However the most interesting this you said was to mention the 'enemy du jour'. That is indeed telling because there are those who claim that that is what Islam is, a new foe cooked up to replace the Commies and thus keep the military-industrial complex going. Personally I don't really subscribe to that but it is interesting the way it shakes out.

Would I have done differently? Yes sir I would. I would have lifted the blockade on Cuba and it would have become democratic a long time again.

Best regards to you. I still enjoy your posts even if you are 'tired' of mine. :)

Hi CornHolio, I'm not sure it's about angering Bin Laden or otherwise. I think if anything one thing I have learnt here is that it really doesn't matter what we do, Islam will still hate us. We could give in to all their demands and they would cook up some more.

What we did was arm Bin Laden and give him strength.
Yeah, I understand, it seemed a good idea at the time.
The Soviets as a greater evil? Well that's debatable. For example Mutually Assured Destruction seemed to work as a strategy with them. How do you fancy it with Iran? Personally I'm not keen.

I guess what I'm really getting at is this whole idea that gee whiz Reagan was so great and if only we had someone like him now.
I just don't believe that. I think that one of the biggest obstacles we have to really confronting Islam is that the oil interests, which are so powerful in the US, are in bed with the House of Saud. And that's mainly a Conservative thing, not a Liberal thing.
Until that were to change it's unlikely we'll see much difference.
Reagan knew which way his bread was buttered and would have behaved no differently.

I understand you don't like Obama, that's your right, but if you really think a Republican is going to make a scrap of difference (as in 2000-2008),I invite you to dream on.

Thanks.

Well, amazonas, you may think the claim that Reagan ended the Cold War is BS but ex-Soviets don't. For instance, Alexander Bessmertnykh, Gorbachev's foreign minister, is on record saying, and I quote, "Ronald Reagan's defense spending and strategic defense initiative accelerated the demise of the Soviet Union." Reagan moved the containment policy, inaugurated under Truman and carried out by every President after him, to an outright win policy and he pulled it off. He also, more than any other modern President, made the world safer from a nuclear holocaust because he achieved the double zero option respecting short-range and medium range nuclear missiles.

Reagan also gave us the largest peace-time expansion of the economy in our history up to his time (this included almost doubling federal revenue from income taxes at a much lower tax rate, thus proving "Reaganomics" worked---but the damn Congress spent the money faster than Reagan brought it in and then uninformed people blamed Reagan for the increased debt). As for funding the Contras, I'd like to be there when you told the Mosquito Indians who were Contras that seeing their familes slaughtered by the Sandinistas (the Somoza regime just left these Indians alone) was something they shouldn't have taken up arms about. Reagan correctly perceived, as Eisenhower did with Guatemala in 1954, that a Soviet foothold on the North American continent was simply not an option. Really, it is so easy in retrospect to criticize Presidential administrations that fought the Cold War, but all should remember that we won that war and winning wars always comes at a price.

For the record, I would place Reagan among America's top ten Presidents. He was outstanding and I only mentioned a few of his achievements. There are more. BTW, if I came across as insulting to you in a previous post, my apologies for that. Sometimes in my rush to get a point across I can be less than diplomatic. Have to work on that.

Last week the Egyptian Government announced that it intends to put 19 Americans on trial for fomenting anti-government protests – a charge they deny. Protests from the Obama administration have so far been futile, met with sneers of contempt.
...............................

And the administration is talking about not only continuing our foreign aid to Egypt, but *increasing it*. Madness.

More:

Carter is back. And there is no Reagan in the offing.
...............................

That's what I'm afraid of.

No—Reagan was *not* perfect. But he knew evil when he saw it, and was not afraid to say so.

I don't believe he understood the severity of the threat of Islam thirty years ago—but then, how many of us did?

Were he still around today, I believe he would very much recognize the Jihad threat—and act accordingly.
