Spencer: Underwear bomber disproves conventional wisdom about terrorism

In a piece in Human Events this morning I discuss the lessons that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab should have taught the learned analysts:

Bravo for life’s little ironies. Last Monday, Bill Clinton attributed the recent jihad violence in Nigeria to poverty. Referring obliquely to the attacks that the jihadist group Boko Haram (A group that preaches that Western education is sin) had carried out, Clinton ascribed them to the large disparity between the rich and the poor in Nigeria: “You can’t just have this level of inequality persist. That’s what’s fueling all this stuff.” Then on Thursday, the son of one of Nigeria’s richest men was sentenced to life in prison for an attempt to commit jihad mass murder in a jetliner.

The idea that poverty causes terrorism is a familiar assumption on both the Left and the Right; it is, ultimately, the guiding assumption behind the U.S. Military’s making itself busy in Afghanistan building roads, schools and hospitals. The fond belief is that a sufficient amount of money will transform Kabul into Kansas City, and then all shall be well. Ten years of American blood and treasure squandered in Afghanistan should have paid for this fantasy long ago, but of course it hasn’t.

Besides integrity, the scarcest commodity in Washington is accountability, and so none of the learned analysts who so confidently predicted that all this infrastructure would raise the Afghan standard of living and win Afghan hearts and minds, thereby destroying the impetus for terrorism, are ever called to account for the obvious howling failure of everything they attempted, and the falsehood of all they predicted. Nor are the reputations rehabilitated of those whose predictions proved true that none of this would work, and that the Afghans would continue waging jihad against all outsiders and against each other, as they have done from time immemorial. They are, as ever, “Islamophobes,” “extremists,” not to be trusted. Washington doesn’t operate according to the canons of reasoned discourse. It operates by the rule of clubs and clans; if you’re in with the group in power, your ideas will be accepted and implemented. Failure is not an impediment to continuing to exercise power.

So it is that Bill Clinton, laden with honors, lauded, respected and adulated everywhere, almost certainly didn’t think that he was saying anything remotely controversial when he said that “inequality” was “fueling” the Nigerian jihad. He probably has no idea that the Nigerian jihadist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for trying to light a bomb hidden in his underwear and blow up a jetliner over Detroit on Christmas Day 2009, was one of the nation’s wealthiest young men. Abdulmutallab’s father is Dr. Alhaji Umaru Abdul Mutallab, a former government minister and former head of Nigeria’s largest bank.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab did not know hunger. He did not turn to jihad to redress social inequalities. Like other fantastically rich men such as Osama bin Laden and Aymen al-Zawahiri, as well as the jihadist physicians in Glasgow, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab turned to jihad because he believed that it was his responsibility before Allah to wage war against Infidels, and that Allah would reward his killing large numbers of them. When he pled guilty in October, Abdulmutallab said to the court: “In late 2009, in fulfillment of a religious obligation, I decided to participate in jihad against the United States. The Koran obliges every able Muslim to participate in jihad and fight in the way of Allah, those who fight you, and kill them wherever you find them, some parts of the Koran say, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”

Would a redress of “inequalities” have dissuaded Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab from waging jihad against the United States? Not likely. For even though he couches his actions as a matter of fighting those who fight you, in Islam there is also an imperative to fight against those who “believe not in God and the Last Day and do not forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden,” including, specifically, Jews and Christians (Koran 9:29). No amount of American largesse will ever dissuade a believing Muslim from considering that a divine responsibility.

This is a lesson that official Washington should have learned again and again, since every jihadist speaks the way Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab does, belying the non-Islamic explanations for jihad that pour endlessly out of Washington’s think tanks. But it won’t be learned this time, either.

It often seems the US has never had the thought that enriching and thus making more powerful those who hate you is generally a bad idea.

I have no notion how the idea came to dominate that enriching and thus making more powerful those who hate you will make them stop hating you.

And don't even get me started on enriching people who don't right now hate you but are very apt to once they are rich enough and powerful enough to harm you, particularly since you concede they have every right to and even should hate you.

How much of the ruling class of the entire Occident today has a guilty conscience about our ordinary folk being so much better off than the desperate ordinary folk of, say, Africa, and most of Asia?

Not about our ruling class being richer than God.

Oh, no.

Nobody feels guilty for that.

And, besides.

The same policies that impoverish our ordinary folks while - in some measure - benefiting theirs also make their ruling classes as rich as ours.

So that's all right, then.

Consider US policy towards China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and so many other places.

Will it be a better or even just safer world when China is, per capita, as rich as we are?

Or, just as you say, Afghanistan?

You wrote, "The fond belief is that a sufficient amount of money will transform Kabul into Kansas City, and then all shall be well. Ten years of American blood and treasure squandered in Afghanistan should have paid for this fantasy long ago, but of course it hasn’t."

To admit that was nuts is to admit our policy was absurd from the beginning.

Nothing we can do will change Kabul into Kansas City.

We should have settled for punitive raids on the al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan in 2001 and let it go at that.

You are perfectly right that enriching out enemies does not make them friends but only richer and more powerful enemies.

For that matter, enriching some who are not now our enemies will make them that as soon as they are rich enough and powerful enough to try it out.

The leaders of the Occident have a guilty conscience about the relative wealth of our ordinary people compared to those of China, India, the Arab world, etc.

When China, India, and the Arab world are as rich, per capita, as the Occident will the world be better or safer, do you think?

Fat chance, if you ask me.

But, of course, nobody asks me.

Some day I'll get this comment software.

But it wasn't today.

Sorry.

Clinton's reasoning would suggest then that there would be poverty-attributable terrorism throughout the world, including within the U.S. where inequitable income distribution and the number of people living below the poverty line are both high. Yet, that's not the case.

Clearly, Bill Clinton, Boy Wonder, doesn't have a clue. Nor does Barack Obama. Nor did the House of Bush. Take off your ideological blinders (or get sober of your relationships with Arabian royalty). Reality is there for those with open minds, and a willingness to dig behind the veneer of PC nonsense and Islamophile misinformation and deception.

Muslims themselves lie and promote this idea of jihad comes from poverty. And they know they are lying. The mantra is repeated almost as many times a day as their favorite catch all put down, Islamaphobe.

A couple of years ago I went to an interfaith evening where some Protestant church up near D.C. (I think it was Trinitarian) was showing the movie, "What a Billion Muslims Think" and we were invited to break into groups to talk about it afterwards. I sat in a circle, across from a Muslim man who had brought his wife in a bag (she was in long robes with a white decorative nigab, only eyes showing, and she sat perfectly still and silent the entire time. She might as well not have been there for what she contributed to the evening. Her husband later told me she was a dentist. Uh huh.) There were also the Muslim girl twenty-something-year-olds sitting to my left who came sans hijab, dressed very fashionably in their designer boots, colorful winter scarves and short leather jackets. Very GMU. One of them offered that jihad is caused by poverty, to which I looked up from writing the notes that the moderator had asked me to take and said that, no, that wasn't accurate because not too long ago a group of Muslim doctors had driven their jeep into the front of an airport in Scotland in an act of jihad. She glared at me after that because I had blown her narrative.

There was also the clean cut Muslim twenty something guy who asked very sincere questions, but come to find out later he was a member of the Muslim Student Association.

As we were leaving the man with the wife-in-a-bag came up to me smiling and offered me a hard cover copy of the Qu'ran that was in English on one side and Arabic on the other. Little did he know I probably knew more about the Qu'ran than he did. When I later opened it to certain passages I knew were inflammatory, they were all there, in living color.

It makes me wonder, are Muslims that ignorant? Or are they just lazy? Or are those phrases best reserved to describe Americans who refuse to find out what Islam is all about, preferring to have Muslims do their thinking for them?

There's only one solution for people such as Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, you insert it between and above the eyes. Need I say more?

Well, maybe Bill could give a few of his millions to Boko Haram and do his part to alleviate their poverty, thus stopping jihad in Nigeria...

Clinton must have a veneral diseae like syphilis destroying his brain to make such absurd commnents. Are the Nigerian Christians whom the muslims are slaughtering any richer than the muslims themselves? Of course not. How poor were the 9-11 muslim mass murders? Not, they wealthy Saudis by and large. And Osamm Bin Laden; was he despirately poor and trying to be like Robbin Hood of the east? Nope he was filthy rich because of daddy being a multimillionaire Saudi developer/engineer with his own company!
Time to confrnt such lies like Clinton's openly and in public!

Yes, and perhaps the FLOTUS could kick a few of the taxpayer millions she squanders on her luxury vacations, such as the ski weekend she and her whelps just enjoyed in Colorado (complete with extensive entourage, all transported thither on a fuel-gulping 747). This, not two months after her 17-day stay in Hawaii (ditto).

We should live so long.

MIchelle Obama is a typical Third World ruler's wife.

I hope this failed jihadi loser was so damaged in his perineal region he has to wear Depends in pain for the rest of his miserable accursed existence.

This poverty factor is about as valid as the "Religion of Peace" mythology. It applies no more to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab than to Major Hassan than to Osama bin Laden.
They never prosecuted an economic argument; they advocated for the religiously political extreme.
Very Clear! That's it!

OH yes, I almost forgot this time. Has the guy in the grey suit who facilitated his boarding in Europe ever been ID'd? They had him on camera at the Eurabian airport, speaking for "Li'l Umar". Big enough of an impression and influential enough for them to relax the rules. Not done for the impoverished immigrant - (Well, maybe in some cases it is.)

............................

I do. This idiotic concept stems from "Dialectic Materialism" and "The Class Struggle"—in other words, Communism.

The basic idea is that *all* conflict comes from class and income levels—in other words, that all conflict has a materialistic basis.

Anyone who has read any history at all will know that this is ridiculous.

But, positing this stupid concept leads to a range of conclusions—violent class struggle, the imposition of Communism, "Social Justice", or setting up a welfare state, innumerable social programs, and copious amounts of foreign aid to "third world" countries.

These latter are postures most often taken in the West—and often by people—like Bill Clinton—who are not full-fledged Communists at all.

The basic idea is that if you throw enough money at "poor people" that they will no longer be a threat—either as street criminals or as Jihad terrorists.

But it is a false premise—particularly re Jihad terror. But it is one that credulous Westerners have stubbornly stuck to, all evidence to the contrary.

There is no understanding that a group's philosophy or creed can lead to both their animosity and their general condition—in other words, Jihad frequently leads to poverty, but poverty does not lead to Jihad.

And there seems to be no acknowledgment that countries that change their approach can often *lift themselves out of poverty*—and far more efficiently than any amount of foreign aid do. In my lifetime, South Korea, Chile, Thailand, India, and Ireland have done a great deal to pull themselves out of poverty.

Oddly, those like Clinton do not seem to notice...

So—as you note—this foolish policy instead just strengthens our enemies. Madness.
