Kabul (CNN) -- At least two American officers were killed inside the interior ministry in Kabul, a senior Afghan police official said Saturday.According to the International Security Assistance Force, initial reports indicated that "an individual" turned his weapon against NATO service members.
The agency did not provide the nationalities of the victims, but the Afghan police official confirmed they were American.
The Americans killed were a colonel and a major, the official said.
"They were part of the advisory mission there," the official said. "At this stage we can't say why they were killed."...
The police official said it also was uncertain whether the attack was connected to the recent violence across the country over the burning of Qurans at a U.S. base.

What do you bet that neither of these American military officers was armed --- doubtless in deference to the sensitivities of the "host country"? All Americans serving in that country of rabid dogs should be armed all of the time -- and they should be issued something big enough to stop an attacker, like a .45 or a .44. The Army learned what works on Muslim fanatics more than a century ago in the Philippines; apparently that hard-got wisdom was dispensed with.

While the American tactics in Afghanistan are based on a softly softly approach, we realists at JW seem to favour a more hardline way of doing things.
The idea that the former way is best seems to me to be based on an attempt to buy favour with them. This might work in anything but an islamic country.
The Obama administration needs to understand the Muslim mindset in this situation. That they will never be loyal allies of infidels, no matter how much we spend trying to buy their goodwill.
The bill is already way more than we can afford, and there will never be any return on that investment, no matter how much higher it goes.
The longer we go on this way the harder it's going to be to win the endgame. Our goals and theirs are too incompatible. They want honour on their terms, which means defeat and dishonour in our language.
The British learned these things in the 19th C, and should have remembered well.

It is time for all NATO forces to leave Trashkanistan, including the 900 or so trainers from my country, Canada. We agreed to keep soldiers in-country to train the Afghan army after our combat mission in Kandahar ended last summer.
I supported NATO's combat mission but after a decade spent trying to give the Afghans a shot at a decent life, it is clear they are incapable of seizing this rare opportunity. Screw 'em. Let them stew in their backwardness, barbarism and Islamism. That place is not worth another single western life.
The key to solving the problem of Afghanistan is to de-program the Islamobots with a form of electroshock therapy. Pull ISAF and all Westerners out and give them an electromagnetic pulse from on high; it's the humane thing to do.

This is another tragic result of western intervention in a muslim majority area. Islam is death and darkness to the local population and these people love death and darkness more than life and light. Any attempt to draw them out into the light is rebuffed with violence. It's a human tragedy. Think of the countless lives of women and children that will be sucked back into the moral sewer of Islamic sharia law. Nothing but beatings rape,terror awaits them when the Americans leave, not to mention the waste of brave Nato soldiers killed and maimed for life in this futlie attept to bring democracy and peace to a population that prefers to live under the the prepetual war of Islamic society.

Perhaps the only time I have even slightly disagreed with you is, as StephenA55 said when he 'stole my thunder, when you used the word 'arguably'. I'm just kidding of course as I'm sure there is not doubt in your mind as well that islam is doubtlessly the greatest tragedy to befall mankind. Unless, of course, one were to say that the dark forces of the evil evil spirit is the greatest tragedy to befall mankind, however, I would say that the two are inseparable, as the spirit moving through islam is that same evil spirit that must consume life in order for it to live.

I'm fully sympathetic to your point, Rob, and to StephenA55's. It's just the lawyer coming out in me when I use such a word as "arguably" and so I hope no one will hold this against me, though I couldn't mind, wouldn't mind, if one did. In any case, it's a quite an indictment of Islam to aver that it's the worst thing that has ever happened to man, considering other terrible things like the Black Death, Marxism and Nazism, competitors to be sure for this infamous top position, but I would argue (here I go again) that Islam should be placed on top here. My best to you and to those you hold most dearly.

I was just poking a little fun at you with the 'arguably' thing but, at the same time, I do believe that islam IS doubtlessly the 'greatest tragedy' to befall human kind (soon to be called human unkind). Here are some of my reasons why I think it exceeds Nazism and Communism combined. First the number 'it' has killed is more than the other two combined (270+ million and counting). Even more importantly, 'it' consumes and annihilates every culture it takes over or seeps into. Gone, never to return (Spain is one aberration and perhaps to a degree, India). And think about how many people have converted to islam in all of these areas, almost entirely out of fear of the sword. And what does it do to them? It turns them into slaves of allah and often monsters of death and destruction. Otherwise good souls who are indoctrinated into the most unenlightened beliefs known to mankind, with an inability to use our god given abilities to reason, and who are ultimately loyal only to the ummah of islam. Nazism and Communism have 'had their day in the sun' so to speak, while islam just keeps on chugging along, gaining in both strength and numbers (1/3 of the worlds population?). And what staying power...1400 years!! Nazism and Communism are little babes in comparison-and Nazism is essentially dead after only 25 years or so. And lastly, that god is used for all manner of benefit to propagating itself, and for all manner of hell to all others, is simply sickening. If it weren't soo evil, I would admire it for it's brilliance!!
